"This story was written specifically for the Mistborn Adventure Game, a tabletop RPG. Please keep in mind that the story was intended to help a GM bring his players up to speed on the world if they haven’t read the books. There are a few goodies for those who want to know more about Kelsier, but this story is not meant to stand wholly on its own."

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.

In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

I'm not sure how one is really supposed to rate a Novella, especially when it's this short and though of using 3-stars as a way to indicate it is okay, and does what it suppose to do. However, I will do a complete review of Arcanum Unbounded later on.

The Eleventh Metal is a very minor chapter from Kelsier's training period as a new Mistborn. Definitely not something that is compulsory to be read along with Mistborn, and even though this is #0.5 of mistborn, it is best read after Era 1 trilogy. Getting to meet Kelsier in The Final Empire was much better.

1.) The Final Empire ★★★★
2.) The Well of Ascension ★★
3.) The Hero of Ages ★★★★
3.5) Secret History ★★★★

This is a prequel story to the Mistborn series! It’s very short, but I absolutely loved the story. And, to be completely honest, I love seeing anything that stars Kelsier! This story centers around a man named Gemmel who is teaching Kelsier to use his Mistborn powers. And his powers are eventually put to the test when he is required to fight another Mistborn who is up to some no-good deeds. Again, this story obviously takes place before the events in The Final Empire, where Kelsier is already a confirmed badass with his powers. And just seeing Kelsier’s dynamic with his Allomantic teacher, who is obviously talking to someone who plays a much bigger part in this trilogy, brought such a smile to my face the entire time while reading.

(I read this in Brandon Sanderson's Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection!)

Mini review
(I read this in )

The Eleventh Metal is a short prequel to the original Mistborn trilogy which depicted the beloved character from the series, Kelsier, on his training to master his skills as a Mistborn with his mentor, Gemmel and it also shows the first spark of Kelsier’s idea for vengeance. Overall, this short story is a good short read for me, while it's enjoyable to read more of Kelsier, other than Gemmel’s appearance it provides nothing new to the original trilogy itself.

He couldn’t return to Luthadel until until he was himself again. Or at the very least a scarred version of himself, the wounds closed, the memories quieted.

This is a super short story about Kelsier's Mistborn training with his teacher Gemmel before the events of The Final Empire.

The things he suffered in the Pits of Hathsin are still fresh in his mind and he is broken.

How could he smile in a world without her?
Kelsier kept smiling. He’d do so until it felt natural. Until that numbness, tied in a knot within him, started to unravel and he began to feel again.

Though he starts out grieving it soon turns to rage. Thoughts of a plan to get revenge but at the same time- a change for his fellow Skaa start to blossom.

I wish this story was longer but that's probably because I missed Kelsier so much.

Whatever he had been, it wasn’t enough. He needed to become something more.

[note: this can be read before The Final Empire]

A quick introduction into the Mistborn world. A young man, Keltzer lost by grieve and a haggard old man taking up the job to become his teacher. Interesting world concept and very excited to see how this series plays out.

A story with Kelsier as the main character? I'm in! This one focused on his mistborn training with a character we never met before, Gemmel. Gemmel is a bit of a dick. The training took me down memory lane when Kelsier trained Vin. It was quite the exciting read especially when you consider how drawn out book 1 is. We get to see Kel in his unpolished, inexperienced, and hesitant way. Good to see even legends start out humble.

"I'm a man who has lived through things he shouldn't have."

This was a short story exploring the relation between Kelsier and Gemmel who teached him about allomancy. It was good to see Kelsier as someone fresh to the magic and still not the master we know from the original trilogy.

I think the story can work as an epilogue to the Mistborn world, where it very quickly gives an idea about the world-building and the magic system which are the two best things in this series. I think it is a good short story but for someone who is used to the incredible series, this did not add anything so it was just a good read for me. As someone who love love love the Mistborn world, I don't regret reading it!!

Kelsier broadened his smile. It took effort.
Gemmel glanced back at him. “You look creepy when you do that.

Finally someone says it. I have a headcannon that Kelsier and Marsh have creepy smiles. Marsh’s more creepy after the events of TFE.

Also, reading this after the trilogy is more appropriate because you understand all the foresahadowing done here.

I was happily surprised to find out that this was a Kelsier story. It was a short glimpse of him training as a Mistborn with his mentor. Gives us an idea of what changes he had to go through and how he decided on his plan to kill the Lord Ruler.

This gif basically sums this up:

...except Gemmel and Kelsier use allomancy instead of hands to climb up walls.

This 20 page short story takes up farthest back in the Mistborn timeline that we have seen so far. I always like returning to the original trilogy because of that unique atmosphere it gives you with the tone and the intensity of the Lord Ruler's world. Brandon Sanderson wrote this for a game. It was meant to serve as both a little bit of fun new content for long-time readers as well as a little appetiser for players of the game. In both cases I think that Sanderson completed his goal.

The Eleventh Metal actually serves a great role in quickly showcasing allowmancy, setting up the tone, and showing you a (surprisingly) vulnerable Kelsier who is just learning how to be Mistborn after escaping the Pits of Hathsin. Honestly, I regret not reading this earlier, for example after The Final Empire because I think it would keep what it needs to keep a mystery for the duration of The Final Empire, but upping the emotional crescendo after it. I think that this is also a very beautifully written short piece.

For familiar readers, like me, this was just fun to go back and see where Kelsier gets his plan do dethrone the Lord Ruler from. Is it a bit cheesy? Yeah, but it makes sense. The short story explains a vital detail's background so it was also a lot of fun to find out about that. I can't give The Eleventh Metal more stars because I think I just read it too late and the emotional impact of book 1 faded a bit.

Overall, very solid short story and intro to Mistborn.

Thank you all for joining in for Episode 6 of Quickie Review with Valliya!

Read as part of

I've been dying to get my hands on this piece of short fiction which took place pre-Mistborn: The Final Empire, simply because Kelsier is one of my favourite characters of all time!

As such, I was absolutely delighted when Arcanum Unbounded was announced to contain this snippet of a prequel story of the Mistborn series' most charismatic rogue/hero. It's a really short piece but provided some interesting insights leading to the larger story of the original trilogy.

Three months after his escape from the Pits of Hathsin, we get to see Kelsier be the student learning how to use his newfound Mistborn ability. In light of this and as this story can be read before Final Empire, the magic of allomancy is explained through Kelsier’s eyes. Though it does make sense as Kelsier is learning himself, those explanations seemed a bit redundant if you’re already familiar with allomancy.

As for the plot, the title pretty much says it all. Not much happens but do I care? I crave reading more about Kelsier, a character I have deeply missed. I only wish the story had been longer, maybe offered some more introspection on Kelsier‘s past.

“I’m here to teach you how to fight. Not how to talk. You already do that. ~ Gemmel
A very short story about Kelsier before the events of the Final Empire and when Kelsier was still trying to gain better control of his new found abilities and dealing with his losses still.

Frankly speaking, this story adds nothing to the Final Empire in any way and I don’t think it will add to the rest of the trilogy either. However, I think the value that this short story can offer is in terms of nostalgia. Its like meeting a beloved character again, if only for a couple of pages (and even if the character wasn't really himself yet). I found Gemmel was an interesting character, I daresay, and I wouldn’t have minded reading more about him!

Onwards to read more of Mistborn!! :D
