This is my favorite genre and it’s been getting harder and harder to find time to catch up with all the authors and books.
Filled with a collection of great characters good and bad, yes of course maybe a little far fetched, but also filled with action, strong characters, gripping pace.
I'm a huge Jack Reacher fan so this book was right up my street. It did not disappoint and I loved this book what a fantastic way to kick off the series. The premise was strong and worked.
The cover has eye catching warm colours. It definitely gives the impression of the man on the cover walking through the stifling desert. It was a good job with the design.
The book is very well written and flowed perfectly. The descriptions are excellent. The author's knowledge and research of the named weapons is evident. Great job Joshua!
The characterisation is tremendous. Each character has their own part to play and they rise to the challenge! Frank Ranger is the MMC and he's very good. He's brave, loyal and very good at what he does. As former Sergeant in the US Marines he has a great set of skills, as does his friend Donny who was a sniper in the Marines too. It all works perfectly.
The book is written in third person. It has multiple points of view including Ranger's. This worked well. It was just the right amount of POVs.
I loved this book. If like me you enjoy Lee Child's you will love this. Move over Jack Reacher, we have a new contender for your crown!
Bullet Proof is an action thriller following the adventures of ex-Army sergeant Frank Ranger. The book begins with Ranger shackled in the back of a prison van in Montana setting off to serve a life sentence following his conviction for murder. There are two other prisoners in the van that unexpectedly is involved in a accident and we are left wondering what happened to the three prisoners and two guards. We never find out. The story then jumps twelve months with Ranger, a wanted man being pursued by the FBI and a US Marshall, walking along a back road in the Arizona desert planning to have a short visit with an ex-Army buddy. Taking a roadside break Ranger is offered a ride into the nearby town and a free meal in the local diner. He is minding his own business when a young woman and her son are harassed by a local loudmouth macho drug dealing jerk. Ranger intervenes dislocating the guy’s shoulder and disables his two sidekicks. And so begins local vigilante justice against Ranger and the young woman that is the heart of the story.
The book begins with a lot of promise but the author went off in a direction that I found confusing. I thought we would have a The Fugitive type story with a cat and mouse chase between Ranger and law enforcement. There is almost no reference to him being chased throughout the book. But the plot quickly pivoted to tough army veteran and buddy taking on a corrupt rancher, his spoiled corrupt son, and a Mexican drug cartel. There is action galore between the two factions that is well written.
The plot is age-old: a long-time family rancher has financial problems and will lose his ranch, turns to drug manufacturing, becomes drug kingpin in southern Arizona, controls his small town’s police and politicians, and has multiple thugs to distribute drugs and collect protection fees from the town’s businesses. The rancher and his son are truly bad guys and the author does a great job of describing their evil.
While I enjoyed the action scenes the personal interaction between Ranger and his friend, Donny, and Ranger and the young woman didn’t jell for me. Ranger’s involvement, regardless of his moral values, seemed weak and superficial. I didn’t find Ranger or the young woman he is protecting as particularly well defined characters. Donny turned sniper for pay was better drawn. The dialogue throughout seemed stilted to me—more like a movie script where you could anticipate the final sentence or two.
Would I recommend others to read the book? That’s a definite maybe. I had just finished new books by seasoned storytellers John Sandford and J.A. Jance and comparing Bullet Proof to their new titles is tough and challenging. As an ebook the price is reasonable and makes it an attractive read, but the story lacks edge of your seat can’t stop reading end of chapters, and there was not a single character I was rooting for other than the kidnapped boy. Ranger needs some more backstory and less mental anguish to serve as a serious protagonist. It will be interesting to see how the planned second book in the series builds on Bullet Proof.
Here is my review for Bullet Proof by Joshua Harkin
I found Bullet Proof to be a brilliant action thriller that was filled with a great story, action, suspense, fighting and tension. Frank Ranger is a great character who used to be a Sergeant in the Marines. When he got home from his last tour his wife was killed and he was shot in the head but it looked like he shot her with his gun, He was jailed for life but when he was being transported to prison, the prison van was ram raided and he managed to escaped so has been on the run ever since. He is looking for his friend Donny but helps Laura and things snowball from there relying on Frank’s skill as a Marine. I thought this book was extremely well written and superbly plotted as I enjoyed it immensely. Frank and Donny’s characters were excellently written along with the rest of the characters of the book. It reminded me of books with Jack Reacher in them which I used to enjoy as well. The storyline was superb and had me hooked from the start of the book as I couldn’t put it down as I wanted to know what happened next to the characters. The synopsis was spot on and drew me to read this book and I most certainly was not disappointed. I liked the author’s writing style and it was easy to read. I haven’t read this author before but I would like to read more books by him. This is book one in this series and I look forward to reading book two when it comes out.

You had to feel for the female characters and the child in this, none of whom deserved the brutality and fright they witnessed and/or experienced. Some was off-page but the on-page stuff was shocking and saddening. And all too credibly, it felt like this really could exist in MAGA USA 2025.
Frank was a decent character who'd been betrayed too many times for it to quite seem credible but if you can move past that, he's an admirable and loyal guy. I suspect he'll end up working with the feds or other law enforcement to get to the bottom of the corruption and to prove his innocence, snd get the daughter he barely knows back. I was in 2 minds about his army buddy who both helps and betrays him, as well as the former's own principles that he sort of seemed to tap into at the end, but I think he'll likely go on to redeem himself in small ways. He had aspects of PTSD and was basically a gun for hire, but there was a little redemption for him at the end.
Frank's road to some kind of semblance of happiness and a future that doesn't involve him being a fugitive looks like it viuld carry on over several tales. I'm up for them.

You've heard the saying 'no good deed goes unpunished'? Well in this case, that good deed causes absolute and utter carnage, not just for himself, but the recipient of that deed! Frank Ranger is a retired marine Sgt who has been incorrectly charged for the murder of his wife. Before he can arrive at the prison, a twist in fate sees Frank on the run, wanting to get as far away so as not to get caught, but close enough to uncover the truth. While Ranger tops in a small town in Arizona, a scum bag and scummy friends entire the diner attempt to lay hands on the server. Franks natural instinct is to protect the young woman, taking all three down without killing them. On the run from the diner Frank learns that the main scumbag is the son of the man who runs the town. Not in any official capacity, but one which makes a lot of money and happens to have customers over the border in the cartel. These people will not rest until Frank is caught, but he will not rest until this woman and her young son are safe. Luckily, Frank has a friend nearby, a former soldier who happens to owe Frank a favour. All is not what it seems and this friend has a new employer, one which will leave him with, shall we say, a conflict of interest! This is high intensity and fast paced. Just when you think nothing else could possibly go wrong, it does. I really enjoyed reading this, and I love how this sets up for book 2!
I was pleased to give Joshua Harkin's new series a preview by picking up Bullet Proof. I usually enjoy these types of thrillers with the lone wolf, alpha male scarred by previous miltary experience, and unable to stop themselves from helping others in need.
The writing style used to present Frank Ranger, though, made it hard for me to feel sympathy for his plight with all the trouble he causes trying to lend a helping hand. His favorite word is "sorry," and about 1/3 way through I was ready to give this one up as I didn't really buy in to the plot, either. There were details about his military buddy and other plot elements that didn't add up, but I was willing to overlook those and I decided to stick with it nevertheless. The story did come to a satisfactory conclusion when all was said and done.
I hope Harkin can make his protagonist a bit more relatable and likeable in any further adventures. While Bullet Proof definitely isn't in the league of other similar books by Jason Kasper, Lee Child, or Logan Ryles, those writers have gotten better with each new book they come out with. Given that, I'll keep my eye out for the next Frank Ranger volume and hope Harkins improves with further writing experience.

I don’t want to regurgitate the blurb on this one, you need to go in blind and see where Frank Ranger takes you. You will be pleasantly surprised. What really stood out to me was how grounded the character of Frank Ranger feels. He’s not a superhero; he’s flawed, haunted, and deeply human. His determination to protect his daughter and clear his name lends real emotional weight to all the firefights and narrow escapes. You find yourself rooting for him not just because he’s skilled, but because he’s fighting for something that matters—justice, redemption, and family. Harkin’s writing is sharp and cinematic, with just enough detail to immerse you in the action without slowing things down. It’s clear he understands the rhythms of a good thriller—when to punch the gas and when to let the characters breathe. The antagonists are more than just faceless villains, too; they’re driven, complex, and often just as compelling as the hero. There’s also something refreshing about how Bullet Proof doesn’t try too hard to reinvent the genre—it embraces the conventions of military and fugitive thrillers but does them well. The result is a story that feels familiar in the best way, like a great action movie you can’t turn off once it starts.
While on the run after escaping from a prison transfer, Frank Ranger happens upon trouble in the small Arizona town where is buddy Donny lives. Frank steps in to help a women and her young son, opening up a whole mess of trouble. He learns that Donny isn’t exactly the same man he remembers and also learns new information regarding is Afghanistan team and four other members removed from his team prior to the last mission. We get a glimpse into what really happened to his wife. Together he and Donny end up taking down the corrupt rancher and his son. Now will he be able to find the man who really killed his wife? Only time will tell. I absolutely loved this story. So many reviewers didn’t care for the plot or the character, I found both to be quite believable given the state of things in the world today. I look forward to seeing how Frank’s search for justice plays out.

Frank Ranger didn’t ask for this mess—he just wanted to clear his name, hug his kid, and not get shot at daily. But toss him into a crime-infested desert town with a shady past and a vengeance-fueled brother-in-law, and suddenly we’ve got ourselves a full-throttle, bullet-spraying brawl with heart.
Joshua Harkin’s writing is fast, gritty, and loaded with cinematic punches. Ranger’s character hits the sweet spot between haunted hero and tactical badass, and the pacing? Breakneck. Like, blink and someone’s getting ambushed again.
This is the kind of book where the sand is hot, the villains are worse, and justice comes with a body count—and honestly, I devoured every page like it owed me money.
4.5 stars because it’s brutal, bold, and badass. Frank Ranger doesn’t miss.

This is an addition to the wandering ex-military white knight saviour genre. The twist from other books I have read in this category is that Frank Ranger is a wanted man for the supposed murder of his wife. Frank was a difficult man for me to appreciate. He was not an omnipotent saviour like MC’s in other books of this type. While he is the main character, it seemed he often became a pawn for other characters to use.
I also have questions about the first chapter of the book. Frank was shackled on a prison transport bus. There is a horrific accident. How does he escape? Where does he get street clothes? Why was the transport bus targeted?
Gun aficionados will appreciate all the different weapons that appear.

Frank Ranger is on the run after escaping from prison where he was incarcerated for the murder of his wife. He is innocent of this but finds himself in Namrena to get in touch with an old army buddy where he gets in the middle of a situation in the local diner. This sets off a chain of events which is about the most dramatic day in anyone's life.
We only see a small part of the character of Frank in this first book and I look forward to seeing more as the series progresses. His reunion with his army mate doesn't go exactly to plan and there were some shocking events throughout. The sense of justice pervails though and I thoroughly enjoyed the final scenes.

I got right into this book from the first chapter when the action starts! Frank Ranger is accused of murdering his wife but he is innocent and he saw who killed her. When Frank escapes from prison and goes on the run he comes to a small town to see his army buddy but finds himself in more strife when he comes to the rescue of a mother and young child. The thrilling action continues and never lets up until the very end. I enjoyed the character development and the plot has been set to continue the series. I hope Frank gets to be reunited with his daughter. The story is action thriller but a few things played with my emotions and made me feel like crying. It's a riveting start and I am all set to continue the bumpy ride with Frank Ranger!
Bullet Proof is the first in a new Frank Ranger Thriller series. I have to say it was an explosive start that sets up a good basis for the series. While I will say Frank is not the most likable at times I felt this added to the realism of the novel in a way. Harkin certainly doesn’t hold back when it comes to action and chaos as well. I won’t spoil the plot but I will say that if you are a lover of thrillers you will likely like this one. There were a few moments I found it harder to suspend my disbelief but overall it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the novel. If you are looking for a fast and punchy thriller this is the one for you. As always thank you to Zooloo’s Book Tours for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.
Good story with great suspense and action. Frank Ranger is making his way back across country to try to find evidence that will clear him in the murder of his wife. He is on the run / an escapee but when he stops in a small town that is run by a drug lord, living under cover as a local farm man and comes across a woman and her young child who are being threatened by this guy, Frank's protective instincts kick in and he pauses in his cross-country trek to help protect them. Really interesting story with great character development and good pace to the unfolding. Frank is a good character. Looking forward to more.
This story reads like a movie script, it’s SO good.
It reminds me a little of the tv shows 24, Reacher and The Punisher all rolled into one.
Frank Ranger is framed for a murder he didn’t commit, how could he murder his own wife?. He’s spent the last year or so on the run after his prison transport vehicle had an accident, so he took his chance and he escaped.
I couldn’t get enough of this book and I read it every moment that I could, it had so many twists and turns that I almost couldn’t keep up.
It will keep you on the edge of your seat and I hope we get another book to continue following Frank on his quest to clear his name and get revenge.
Innocent until proven guilty or setup and in for the fight of his life. Frank Ranger comes home ready to have a life with his wife and daughter only to have her killed in front of his eyes. He was charged and found guilty of her murder and no one would believe there were others there and he was set up. Now he has escaped and is drifting only to wind up in a small town with a lot of bad apples, a woman and child in distress and an old army buddy. The story is interesting and easy read.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. From the very first page, I was captivated by Frank Ranger's life. Being on the run from law enforcement when you're innocent must be incredibly difficult. Fortunately, he reconnects with a former Marine buddy, which adds to the story. I appreciated the action, the kidnapping plot, and the overall storyline. The book features excellent world-building, well-developed characters, and is truly a page-turner. I recommend it to all thriller fans.

"Bullet Proof: A Ranger Thriller Book 1" is a gripping book that captures the reader's attention from the very first page. Joshua Harkin presents an exceptional protagonist supported by a remarkable ensemble cast. The storyline is compelling, featuring a hero unjustly wronged and driven to seek justice. With a cause he cannot ignore the narrative unfolds in a fast-paced and absorbing manner. Although not for the faint-hearted, it is an undeniably enjoyable read.

Action packed, trilling and a really good read. A man out to prove his innocence who sees to be able to find trouble, or does it find him, wherever he goes. Wrongly accused of murder and being hunted, this book if full of suspense. I love a lone wolf action story so this was right up my street, will certainly be looking out to read more from Joshua Harkin.
Thank you @zooloosbooktours @inkubatorbooks for having me on the tour and for a copy of this ebook.
This is a Reacher meets The Fugitive, fast paced, action thriller. Although the characters were at times overly simplified and stereotypical, the pace of the action kept me engaged throughout and I read it straight through in one day. I will likely continue to read this series as new books become available. Strongly recommended for fans of action thrillers.
Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an advanced reader copy.
Frank Ranger escapes after the bus that was taking him to prison crashed and is now on the run determined to clear his name, but ends caught up in a different kind of trouble in a small town where corruption is spend through out. The action, intrigue, dangerous situations and slim chance of making it out a live kept me flipping pages as fast as I could read them.I was hooked from beginning to end.
Sorry but don’t waste your time. The author should have added some dragons or aliens. After about 25% done I did my best to speed read thru to the end to see if the super human hero who should have died at least ten times and company got the better of the bad guy or were going to drag it in to the next book to the next book. A disappointing read.
Bullet Proof by Joshua Harkin. Rangers thrillers book 1. This was a really good read. I did like Ranger. He was my favourite character. I didn't like Donny. I didn't trust him. This was a gripping read from page one. Non stop action. I liked the writing style and the story. I can't wait for the next book. I Recommend this book.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I must say I’m impressed. This is my favorite genre and it’s been getting harder and harder to find good books in it. Well written, great characters. Felt like I was reading an action movie. Great job.

First time reading this author and this is the first book in the series so it seemed like a good place to start. Former Marine Frank ranger is a man being hunted as he was framed for his wife's murder. He has a young daughter so he has to clear his name in order to take care of her.
