Rylee Adamson #9

Rising Darkness

Rate this book
“My name is Rylee and I am a Tracker.

When children go missing, and the Humans have no leads, I’m the one they call. I am their last hope in bringing home the lost ones. I salvage what they cannot.

One last salvage and the final battle with Orion and the demon hordes will be upon me. I don't know the name of the person I'm Tracking, or what she looks like so finding her is going to be . . . impossible. But she is the key to defeating the demons.

The world has been swept with a plague that is killing not only the humans, but every supernatural it touches. While I’m out Tracking, my allies are being wiped out.

Worse than all of this? I am losing Pamela to the darkness with every second that passes.

I'm not sure even I can control any of these outcomes

But that doesn't mean I'm not going to try.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

Holy Shit on a Stick!!!

This book has been action packed from the beginning and rightly so.... on the flip side, I've shed tears on more than one occasion - these characters are attached to my very core!

Alex, Pam, Blaz are just amazing, Alex being my absolute favourite!

I'm not sure how I feel about Faris and Liam, this is still a little strange for me and obviously for our Rylee but we will see what happens in BLOOD OF THE LOST!

I can't wait to delve into the last book but at the same time I don't want it to end.

Absolutely amazing!

There’s an author note at the beginning of this book that strongly encourages readers to check-out the novella, STITCHED, prior to diving in, and after personally having done so I’d like to reinforce how important that 100 page tale is towards understanding RISING DARKNESS. Also, if you’ve been considering giving THE ELEMENTAL spin-off novels a whirl as I have, this installment will definitely convince you. So, you’ve been warned, by downloading this title you’re basically adding a minimum of one short and another series to your TBR pile.

WOUNDED was devastating on the Rylee / Liam front; however a ray of hope did peek through the clouds in #8.5 which was further explored in this volume. Mayer did manage to circumvent two of my Speculative Fiction deal breakers (i.e. dead peeps stay dead & no ghost HEAs), but the outcome was WEIRD to say the least, and with only one book left to go the romantic thread will either be a train wreck or a stroke of genius.

I mentioned in my previous review how much I enjoyed Pam’s POV, and that carried over to this novel; I thought that the author captured her internal struggle exquisitely, and in such a way that it wasn’t damaging to her character, unlike her approach to Milly. Also, the aftershocks that stemmed from Pam’s final side choice in the coming battle made for some interesting offshoots including Elemental correlations, and Alex. Oh. My. God. ALEX!

The plot line was another winner with Rylee’s search for the Great Wolf followed by that of the Destroyer. Again, Mayer blew my expectations out of the water by revealing surprising connections with some of this series cast as well as previously visited locations and past events. And, of course no RYLEE ADAMSON installment would be complete without the death of a secondary. Up until this point I’ve been unaffected by all except one, but I was saddened by this latest casualty.

My binge read has officially come to an end with RISING DARKNESS, and now I must wait for BLOOD OF THE LOST. Gah!

I'd recommend reading Stitched the novella; before diving into this one. Stitched sets up for this full novel.

It's another action-packed adventure and another emotional read. I've cried in each book in this series. Rylee continues to grow and realizes that she needs friends at her side to save the world.

4.5 (I need the next one!)

Each book brings us closer to the end and well, unfortunately, there's only one more book to go.
I have a feeling this is a series I'll seriously miss, it will take me a long time to find another one as good.
Anyway, this book left me maybe more curious than the last ones! As I began to expect form this author, there were a few surprises in this book as well.
And something that I really like in this series: Mayer isn't afraid of killing her characters, a fault that a lot of authors often have. 99% of the time someone saves them or there is a cure or they don't really die.
Well, I love being surprised, and this book, again, made my wish come true. Let's just hope the last book won't be a disappointment!

I LOVED THIS BOOK!! Hell I love this series! I am a bit sad to see that the next book will be the final book but can't wait to see how this story ends for Rylee, Liam, Faris, Doran, Alex, Pamela, Blaz, Eve, Berget and Lark. I can honestly say that every book in this series was awesome. Once I picked it up, I certainly couldn't put it down. Fast paced action, heartwrenching moments, awesome characters and all in all one hell of a story. BRAVO Shannon Mayer

There is a Graphic Audio production of the whole Rylee Adamson Series, which includes 10 books of the series and five short stories. All this was included in my audible subscription. That's how I decided to listen to all the books and short stories. Otherwise it would have been pretty costly to listen to this production.

The first two short stories and book 1 and two were 3.5 and 4 stars. The rest of the series was a solid three stars rating.

At some point the story felt to drawn out but since I had passed the point of no return, where I just wanted to know who the stories ends I finished 15 Graphicaudio books. I think the story could have been shortened without loosing anything. From the beginning two things were predictable: One (and even more) person was Demon possessed and this person will die. And also there will be an Elemental involved, whom we meet again in book 9.

I liked Rylee and Mayer killed off some of the good guys. Two deaths were not really necessary and didn't feel right.

I would say this is a drawn out series, but okay, to listen for free in the graphic audio version. Stay away from the series if you tend to dnf series and hate it if the author kills beloved important side charcters.

Body Count is HIGH

Mayer’s is in competition with GRR Martin for highest body count in a series. I am tired of getting attached to characters in this series for Mayer’s to just whack them. I have become immune to it. Why should I invest in a character if I feel the author is killing them for shock value. I will give you an example of how a really stellar paranormal author deals with death. Make the death count and resonate with the reader. This is why for me Mayer is a good paranormal author, but not a great one. She writes fun books, but why should I invest in a character if the signs that they are going to die are written on the wall. Yes I know Orion is a big evil baddie, but you can’t keep killing off core characters and still expect me to care.

This book deals with the hunt for the Destroyer. I do suggest you read the Elemental series to better understand this subplot. Also Faris and Liam share a body which is very interesting. It does grow Faris as a character.

Berget is also more prominent in this book. Pamela is wounded by what she had to do to Liam and it has left her vulnerable to evil.

I borrowed this via kindle unlimited which won’t show as a verified purchase.

I purchased this novel back in April when it became available, but held off reading it until today so that I could read book ten, "Blood of the Lost," the last book in the series, immediately after. Trust me when I say that this was not an easy task as I absolutely love this series.

This has been one fantastic series, a series that will not be forgotten. It's amazing to see how far Rylee has come from when we first met her in book one, "Priceless." It's been a roller-coaster of a ride full of action, suspense, magic, and romance, that also included a plethora of paranormal characters, far too many to list. Knowing the end is here has me choked up full of love for the stories the author wielded with each novel, and more importantly, for the people I have come to love - Rylee, Liam, Faris, Doran, Pamela, Berget, Alex, Blaz, and Eve. I still remember Rylee's and Liam's intense dislike for each other in book one.

This is a series that I highly recommend, especially to those who love reading the paranormal genre. I'm ready for the finale (with a box of tissues by my side). Bring it on!

I need the final book like yesterday!
Spoilers ahead do not read, you've been warned.
Alex is freaking back baby!!! Holy balls, I knew it was going to happen but I can't express how happy it makes me.
Pamela was really annoying most of the time, but I knew she'd wise up somehow, the final battle needed her.
Frank, poor Frank.
Milly, poor Milly.
Liam. Omg I love him. It's super weird for him to be sharing Far is, and I hope by the grace of the Gods, he will get a new body. I don't want them to share. And I don't even care what happens to Faris.
Doran needs a new love interest. If Liam never existed, he and Rylee would be great together. But Liam is Liam and Rylee belongs with him alone.
Berget is a time bomb.
Blaz lost his faith, how will that effect him in the final battle.
The babies. I am so stressed out about them. I need them both to be safe. How did Orion find them? Ugh! Erik better keep them safe.

I probably would have gone to 4 stars with this one, but I feel like this is the point in the series where not having read the novellas and the Elemental series becomes a problem. I would recommend that someone who wanted to get the most out of this series stop reading it at book 8 and then go read the others before continuing.

I very much felt like I was missing huge chunks of the story because I hadn't read the other series and the shorts.
*
Actually listening to the audio (which isn't currently listed on GRs) and am finding that I feel like I missed a book. There is a novella in between this book and the prior book and I'm thinking it's probably pretty necessary for continuity sake although I haven't read it yet.

I just feel like I missed critical plot points.

HERE ARE THE FACTS ABOUT RISING DARKNESS, BOOK 9

Until now, I've always reviewed Shannon Mayer's Rylee series as if I were trying to "convince" someone who has never read one of her books, how much I like her writing style and how much I love Rylee...well, I can't figure out how to do that SOS this time. So here are the facts.
***SPOILER, SPOILER, AND MORE SPOILERS!!! THE WHOLE REVIEW IS ONE GIANT SPOILER!!**So this review is for those who have read the book, not for those who are not a total fan!

Okay, wow! I can't wait for the final book, Blood Of The Lost! I am so glad Pam has come to her senses and has stopped feeling guilty, and sorry for herself. I am NOT okay with Faris/Liam winning over Rylee's heart! No way! This is important: I KNEW THAT ELEMENTALLY CHALLENGED (an introduction to Larkspur) WOULD BE RELATIVE TO RYLEE'S FUTURE! And if you'll look at the review you'll see I was right! I hate that Milly is dead, but she died a good death and she died with a clean soul and not as Orions whore! I hate that Frank gets killed because he was a very decent young man. I hate it for Pamela. I am also totally freaked that Alex is and (hopefully) will retain the ability to fully transform...our little Alex is all grown up now, almost. I loved RECURVE and I enjoyed meeting Lark and I can't wait to see how much she will actually help Rylee kick Orion's ass! And I will be very pi$$£d if Liam does not come out of the newly opened veil at the end of this thing and he and Rylee DON'T fly off into the sunset on Blaz!! And most of all, I hope little Marcella and Zane follow in their mother's footsteps and start the loop all over again. And last but not least, I dread The Blood Of The Lost, because it will mean that I must part ways with Rylee, her world, and her friends! WOW THAT FELT GOOD! I may get negged right off the reviewers list for this, but I don't care...it felt great!

Your the freaking best Miss Mayer! Glory hallelujah, and where's the damned Tylenol!!

Pamela struggles in this book

Each supernatural has their own struggles, Pamela just might have more than others. Unfortunately she is so young and has doubts and that lets evil in. She just has to remember love for her family as that conquer all right?

The battle has come.... Who makes it?

3.5/5.0

The stories are still good, I’m just getting a bit tired of Rylee’s nasty personality, all the best character’s dying and nothing but negativity and darkness. Sheesh, even Shakespeare’s tragedies had comic relief and scenes that lighten them up a bit!

I love this series and have to admit it is one of my all time favorite urban fantasies. I was thrilled with the the novella in between this and the last book and I think it pushed my expectations through the roof for this one.

For spoiler free sake I'm going to be a little vague on this comment: I can truly say that I found almost everything about this book nearly perfect except for the situation with a single body holding two souls. That situation and the amount it was discussed just seemed to rub me the wrong way. Please don't get me wrong, this is still a marvelous read but I would of been happier without that circumstance.

I hear that there will only be one more book in this series and have to say that I'm extremely sad to see these characters go. I'm hoping that Mayer might consider a spin off of those other supporting characters we've come to love.

I knew from the first page I was going to love this series and it has become one of my favourites. I read it years ago and now I am leaving a review.
Rylee has the best and the worst job, to find those who are lost, the ones no one can find but it is not all sunshine and roses. Sometimes it will break your heart.
It is an intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious thriller filled with tension. The story includes alliances, threats, betrayal, riddles, and plots, all infused with a touch of humour to keep the pages turning.

An excellent beginning of the end

Rylee is once again faced with a lot. There is an illness that affects all human and supernatural and they want rylee's blood since it is the cure. Pamela goes a bit dark but redeems herself. Fairs is acting strange ever since the encounter with Liam and believe it or not, we get some Liam in this one too! I so want Liam back and I hope that happens in the last book. Rylee frees Lark, Orion is free and the stage is set for the final battle!

This one is awesome!
I started it tho and then had to go back and read the novella set before this one (8.5) for once it’s 100% needed or you’ll be like me and not under this book.

I really enjoyed this book once i understood the background. I’m starting to like the vampire.

It’s made me need to read the 0.5 prequel where Rylee meets lark the first time. Which I’ll enjoy after this. I very recently started larks books so this one definitely is interesting when those characters venture across into this series.

Rylees journey is almost over, cannot wait for the next book to see how it all ends/

Rising Darkness is the second to last book in this series. We’re so close to the end and the tension didn’t let up once in this book. Everything is being set up for the final battle and answers are finally coming through. I felt for Rylee during this book and all she had to go through, and that ending and what it might mean for her child nearly gave me a heart attack! I was frustrated with Pam and how stupid she was, but I kept reminding myself that she really is just a kid, and her actions aren’t out of character at all. I both can’t wait, and am dreading the final book. A must read for fans of this series!

I enjoyed this series, especially seeing how it intertwined with the Elemental Series. However, I'm not so sure my teenagers would enjoy it. There is a fair amount of language and gore that even I skipped through. In addition to that there are some sex scenes to skip over, and a few crude/lewd moments that I could have done without. I understood the language was a way of distinction with the Trackers in that world, and if it hadn't been for how well done the story was I don't think I would have finished the series.
I did appreciate the moral to the series, that love for family and friends really can help us conquer the darkness in our lives. I also liked how the chain of events that was her life was realized at the end in a way that led her to where she was, and how necessary those events were to building who Riley was and developing why she was loved so much by her"family ".

ARGH! This book just pissed me off. I just didn't think Rylee stayed true to her character in this book and after 8 previous books that really made me mad. . Will I read the last book yes, but I'm so disappointed in this book I could scream.

More Heartwrenching Trials

Book 9 of the Rylee Adamson books had us watch Pamela struggle with the darkness. Rylee and co. had to watch more of their loved ones get hurt. We had to say goodbye to a few characters. So much sadness and loss. I just know that it will all come to an exciting conclusion in Book 10!

This book has it all! Battles, struggles, friendship, love, family, death, a goal, and a great storyline. We even see a softer side of Rylee. The whole Faris/ Liam combo would be a little disturbing if I were Rylee. I'm still rooting for Doran.
