All occult bookstore owner Allie McCarthy wants is to put the events of the previous month, when she helped the police catch a serial killer, behind her so that her life in the Bordertown of Ashwood can return to normal. But it's going to take more than some sage and four thieves vinegar to clear out the nasty energy that seems to be hanging around. Things may not be as neatly tied up as Allie, the police, and the Elven Guard think they are, even with the serial killer dead. A young woman has been reported missing and the Elven Guard ask Allie to help them investigate. She has her hands full with a mystery of her own, a love life that's a disaster on two fronts, and a business that needs resuscitation and the last thing she wants to do is get involved in another dangerous situation. Common sense says no, but dealing with elves is a tricky thing and before she knows it Allie is much further into the investigation than she ever intended, and in far more danger than anyone realizes.
My name is Morgan Daimler. I have had my poetry and prose published in different places including various anthologies, Circle magazine, Witches and Pagans magazine and Pagan Dawn magazine. I am the author of the urban fantasy series Between the Worlds and (through Cosmic Egg Books) the high fantasy novel Into Shadow. I've written more than a dozen non-fiction works through Moon Books including Fairy Witchcraft, Pagan Portals: the Morrigan, Fairies: A Guide to the Celtic Fair Folk, A New Dictionary of Fairies, and Pagan Portals Aos Sidhe
I am still loving this series. Things seemed sort of wrapped up at the end of the first book but it was fairly obvious that that wasn't the end of the story. This is an episodic series that manages not to seem contrived. The characters have truly progressed since the beginning of the first book. Allie is an extraordinarily well-developed character, as are some of her friends.
I had to read this book in some of the most difficult circumstances. I was on a trans-Atlantic flight with two preschool-age kids and I usually only got to read for less than five minutes at a time. Despite the constant interruptions and losing my place a lot, the book was always easy to come back to. I was never confused or out of touch with the characters. I would say that this experience says something about the excellent pacing and clarity of the story.
I'm definitely an adult but I do regularly read YA books f;or my own enjoyment. This isn't really YA because the themes are not teenage in any way but the writing is accessible enough for younger teens. This Between the Worlds series could be considered New Adult (for an age range from about 18 to 30) but it doesn't entirely follow the stereotypes of New Adult college romance. There is a romance with some of the regular twists - the girl must decide between two lovers - but it avoids making the protagonist look either manipulative or hopelessly naive. The emotional conflict is genuine and believable.
The best part of this book for me is the backdrop of a culture based on the mythology of the Land of Faerie. This book develops the Elven culture in detail. It feels even more real than it did in the first book. There are no rehashed fantasy standbys about Elves here. The Elves are different from humans, yet entirely believable, not super beings or silly in any way. I get the feeling that this story took a lot of research to develop, given its close ties to mythology. Even the parts that are not myth have been well-researched, including dialogue involved in police procedures for instance.
I love the atmosphere of these books, the accessible prose and the characters that keep me wanting to return to the book even when I'm being distracted by a very hectic life. I hope this author keeps it up with future books.
The follow up to Murder between the Worlds, Lost in Mist and Shadow starts just a few weeks after the events of the first book. While a person might be able to just start in on this title without having read the first book, I do not recommend it. I think one really needs to have read the first book in order to fully appreciate the second.
Fortunately for me, I have read the first book, and I loved it. I read this one with much anticipation to see what happened to Allie and friends after the horrific events of #1. I was not disappointed. Allie's life becomes amazingly complicated. I felt myself wanting to reach into the pages and slap her silly on a few occasions. That sounds like I was frustrated with the character. Indeed, no, I understood her reasoning for doing things, but Daimler has written the character is such as way that I really cared whether or not she could see the mistakes and miscues she was misreading. Of course as the reader in an omniscient book, I knew more that she did. THAT is why I wanted to slap her silly. I wanted to warn her! Folks, she is fictional....that I was that involved with her well-being is really saying something.
Let's be clear on one point. This is book #2 and the story is NOT over....thankfully....several loose ends need to be resolved, but the third book is soon to be releases, so fear not. The tale of Allie and Jess and the rest is still to be told.
I knew I was going to enjoy this book because I enjoyed the first, but I much more than enjoyed it, I loved it. The first installment of this series was filled with world building and we had to get to know the characters. In this installment we are already at home with the world portrayed, and the characters. Now it was time to see them grow, to see things that we didn't see coming happen and to get a little bit more on the story arc. By the time I finished reading I was sad because I KNEW it was supposed to be a trilogy and so I won't get the rest of the story until that third book comes out.
Great story, bad punctuation. I read the ebook version of book 1 and was hoping the missing or erroneous punctuation was some sort of ebook error, but it's not. Besides that, there were spelling errors that were obvious even to me as a Dutch person reading English. 'Her' where it should be 'here', 'its' which should be 'it's', 'viola' instead of 'voila' (granted, that French and not English, but I've never seen it written or pronounced as viola in English so I assume that's not normal), stuff like that. I am a huge fan of correct language, but I love these books nevertheless. The story is captivating and interesting. So carry on, even if the errors put you off!
I am enjoying the series. I book two we are getting to know all of the characters better, some of whom are hiding secrets but not the secrets you might think. Thankful I have the third book on my TBR shelf, so I can dive into it right away!
These books are amazing! The world(s) the author has built are solid and *feel* real. The blend of Fairy Lore, fantasy, and reality has me unable to put this series down.
I enjoyed this book, but not nearly as much as the first one; this one is more of a teen fantasy romance, which got quite tedious, I’d have preferred more focus on the murders. There was also a distressing shortage of commas, and the non-ending is irritating.
I love this series!! The first one was great. I loved the second one and now I'm anxiously waiting for the third. Well written and I loved the characters and the plot.
