What's really worth fighting for, when one second is all you have left?

Norman Smithson is at the end of the line. His wife left him, women don't look at him, he was made redundant, and at forty, he could be just that little bit slimmer. He would be a has-been if he'd ever been a 'was' in the first place. He's not the Alpha male of the 21st century or of any century. He was the chubby oddball who used to sit silently at the back of the class so he wouldn't get picked on.

Rosa is a dreadlocked, tattooed and pierced twenty-something, who uses her image as armour to keep everyone away from every broken thing about her. But her past is about to catch up with her ... at the exact moment Norman finds himself in completely the wrong place, at the worst possible time.

One gunshot, one scramble for life, one unlikely couple, one very long night ... can one damaged woman and one ordinary man, find the extraordinary in the very last second they're given?

Broken Lights is a standalone story of what's really worth fighting for, when one second is all you have left.

NOTES: This is a novella at just under 40,000 words, packed with emotion and heat. Contains strong language. Written in British English.

Dianna Hardy

Dianna Hardy is an international bestselling author of (cross-genre) fantasy fiction, most notable for her dark paranormal fantasy and the raw, intense Eye of the Storm series. But her heart-warming Once Times Thrice series proves she thrives in the light as much as the dark. Whatever your poison, what she loves most is to bring you stories that are action-packed, fast-paced and not short of heat, with the focus on character development, relationship dynamics, and the plot. She writes full-length novels and short fiction.

Although quite active online, Dianna prefers the quiet company of nature and animals to the hustle and bustle of people. She loves anything paranormal (she doesn't really consider it "para"), organic food, walking barefoot, the smell of the woods after rain, and summer days.

However, she is also sustained by coffee, chocolate and the occasional vodka.

Having graduated from Richmond Drama School (London) in '98, she spent the next few years in a multitude of jobs (both acting and non-acting), studying anything that fascinated her, searching her soul, and finally found her passion where it had always been: at the end of a pen.

She currently lives in South Hampshire, England with her partner and their daughter, where she writes full time.

Broken Lights is a beautifully realistic and raw story about two individuals who have had very different lives, but are brought together in such an unexpected, and indeed, life changing moment.

I adored Norman from the first sentence. He is your average guy, and that is not a bad thing. I know we are all attracted to the alpha male; they are exciting, but - and Dianna Hardy has touched upon this subject in some of her guest posts for this book - not necessarily, well, in real life they don't always turn out to be as great as they are in fiction. Whereas you're everyday kind and funny male has to take the back-seat in romance stories. Well, I have to say despite the fact I love a good macho male, I fell for Norman straight away because of the way he thinks about what is going on around him, and of how he feels about what's going on, but most importantly the way he reacts to those around him and what life has thrown on him. He is the most realistic male I have ever read about. So relate-able, sweet, considerate, caring, and he has a really great sense of humour, which I personally love in a man.

I mean, Norman isn't having an easy time at this particular point in his life. Such circumstances could ruin a person, make them bitter, and though he does do what any of us would do when we hit rock bottom - indulge in a couple of drinks - he has a good heart, which unfortunately gets him injured in this collision meeting with Rose, but he is just your every day man with no particular power, but regardless of the danger facing him when he stumbles into a situation with Rose, he selflessly helps her.

And then there is Rose, you can't not like Rosa. She has had such a horrible life, but she has spunk. And she is such a strong character in a way that she doesn't even realize. Despite everything she keeps going, she keeps pushing forward, and, as with Norman, your heart does go out to her. You want her to find her way into the light. You want her to know she can have a better life, and for her to gain that, because even though it is so clear to see she doesn't believe there is hope, she still has it inside her, buried in the darkness.

I love Dianna Hardy's work, no matter what the genre. She is a very talented and wonderful writer, so there was no way I wasn't going to love this story. Dianna has a beautiful voice and has that wonderful ability to hook you within the first paragraph. What I loved most about this story is how the events that take place lead the characters to this life changing moment. I personally believe in fate and that everything in life happens for a reason - which is not a nice belief when horrible things happen, I know, and I apologize for how that sounds - that you never know what is round the corner, and that life can indeed change in an instant, or rather a second. So, that aspect of the story was a big pull for me, but I loved that the characters were everyday people thrown together in a moment of horrific madness, and were able to rediscover their strengths and themselves through meeting one another. They do say we meet people in our lives for a reason; that everyone will make an impact on us in one way of another, and is wonderful to see how a selfless act of kindness can make such a difference to someone's views; not to mention how having your life hanging in the balance can really make you stop and look at what you really want and what is actually important in life.

I love that this story is the turning point in two individual's lives; the next phase of discovering themselves, rather than the beginning or a new relationship, which it is, but it's a fresh start all around. You don't see that a lot in romances so it was a nice change of pace.
Broken Lights is a beautifully raw story story that not only proves that life really can change within a second, but that we all have hidden strengths and capabilities beyond our own beliefs. That we have the power to make a difference in other peoples life as well as our own.

This is a fantastic, dark and gritty contemporary romance, which happens to be a short novel or novella. I absolutely loved it.

Norman Smithson is a fantastic character, although he doesn't see himself in that way. He sees himself as a nobody. However, I didn't see him in that light at all. He has something special in his character which I found charming and appealing. He is steady and dependable, and is genuinely a nice man, who has had a really bad run of luck - he's been made redundant and finds out that his wife has been cheating on him. But, one moment of danger will change his life forever.

Rosa is also a wonderful character. I liked her spunk and determination. She is a waitress in a bar and has not had an easy life; she has been trapped in an abusive situation. When a stranger rescues her from her abuser, will she find her "happily ever after"?

I downloaded a copy of this book as soon as it was released and started to read it as soon as I could. I didn't put it down until I had finished it; I was hooked from the first page!

The story is told from both Norman's and Rosa's points of view, although Norman seems to be the main character. The characters are very lifelike and the situations they find themselves in are quite realistic. The descriptions of the events and situations brought the story to life and I could picture them with ease.

I could relate somewhat to Norman's character; his feelings of inadequacy and impotent rage at the hand that life had dealt him struck a chord in me. However, I have never really been in the same situations as he, so I cannot say whether or not I would have reacted in the same way. I really enjoyed the first scene, where Norman is made redundant. I know that the scene where he was made redundant is not really meant to be comical, or even enjoyable, but it was the juxtaposition of the seriousness of the situation and Norman's thoughts which I found really entertaining. Don't get me wrong, I could feel my heart wrench when his life gets turned upside down, but the way it was written lightened the darkness of the moment wonderfully.

The danger Rosa faces in the alleyway is something that a lot of women who are abused are aware of - they live it every day. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a "Norman" rescue them though, and many end up dead or worse, hooked on drugs and still living in Hell. What surprised me about Rosa's character is that, although she has been living in her own Hell, she still manages to keep her independent and stubborn streak; she is a fighter and a strong survivor. I found myself in awe of her strength of character as she tries to survive one day at a time.

The two main characters both have broken lives, but when they come together and begin to get to know each other, they make each other whole. This story is about loss, hope, love, and finding that one special someone who is worth fighting for. What I love about this story is that these two characters actually rescue each other. It has been a privilege to journey with them as they try to fix their shattered lives.

Dianna Hardy has written a fantastic story that touched me deeply.I loved her fast paced writing style and the flow of the story was wonderful. I love reading this author's books, whether in the contemporary or paranormal genres; she has a way of weaving a story together which makes it not only believable, but extremely entertaining. She is one of my favourite authors and I can't wait to read more of her books in the future.

Due to scenes of physical abuse and a sensual scene which is a little on the explicit side, I do not recommend this book to younger readers or those of a nervous disposition. I do, however, highly recommend this book as a MUST READ if you love dark, gritty contemporary or new adult romances. - Lynn Worton

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Norman Smithson had a great life, a wife whom he loved very much and two very beautiful daughters that was his whole life. Norman also had a great job where he was making a comfortable living. It kept his family dressed, food on the table and a nice house. But then one day poor Norman had the worst day ever. He lost his job. The company where he worked didn't someone like him anymore with all of the new technology. Poor Norman is worried about how he is going to take care of his family now and if he will be able to find another job at his age. Losing his job is not the only thing that Norman has to worry about that day or feeling bad about either. His wife leaves him and takes his girls. With losing his wife and job both on the same day put Norman in a bad place. He starts hanging out at bar and trying to lose all of his problems in a bottle.

Rosa is a woman who is all broken up inside. She never had a childhood like most children with a loving mother and father. Her mother was always bringing men home with her and both of them would be flying high on one thing or another. It never really matter to her mother what it was as long as she was high. Rosa had to see and do things that no child should ever have to see or go through.

When Norman meets Rosa he just happens to be in the wrong place at the right time. He meets Rosa and her boyfriend in a dark alley one night on his way home from a bar where he had been trying to drown his troubles in the bottom of a bottle of booze. Rosa is being attacked so Norman hears her screaming and he can't just walk away and pretend he never heard anything. So he decides to step in and help Rosa. But he may have chewed off more than he can handle. He just may have caused him and Rosa their lives.

Norman and Rosa both have been through some hard times in their lives. They may not have been through the same thing but they are both broken people. Can they save each other from becoming someone they don't won't to be or will they become the people they have always wanted to be? Are they both strong enough to fix what is wrong in their lives and make it right so they can be happy and unbroken? Norman and Rosa both had to experience and go through what they did in their lives to be the people they are now so that they could be together and become the person they are today.

I have read both of Dianna's Series The Witching Pen and Eye of the Storm and loved them both. Even though Broken Lights was a different genre it did not matter in the least it was just as good as all of the others that I have read. Dianna knows how to tell each and every one of her character's story as if it was her own life that she is talking about and sometimes you feel as if she has been in your own head as if you are one of the characters.

If you haven't picked up your copy of Broken Lights then I highly recommend that you do. If you have read it or already have your own copy then I am sure that you know a book lover out there that would love receiving Broken Lights as a Christmas present with Christmas just right around the corner.

I received this book to give an honest review.

I have to say this was a totally different book than what I was expecting from this author. I have read her other works being as The Witching Pen series and The Eye of The Storm series those were paranormal so this was a different story. It was really really good. But beware there is sex scenes within here so this is a for sure 18 on up book.

We start off the story with Norman he is just your normal middle age working man. He has a wife and children and he provides for them all. But when his bad day at work ends up becoming a bad day all around he sees the unthinkable act in his own home. Which I am surprised he just was calm as I probably would have went crazy. His life does a turn around. He ends up drinking most of the time now a days. Which is what you would expect with what he has been having to deal with.

All of that changes when he meets Rosa in an unexpected way. One magical night for the both of them though it didn't start out that way and it sure didn't end that way. Puts two people who are from different worlds together. Norman believing he isn't worth anything or he isn't dynamic enough. Rosa having a childhood that no child should ever have. It was rough and difficult.

Enjoyable and quick read. It isn't very long but long enough to where you are not left without answers to what will happen to Norman and Rosa.

Broken Lights is such a moving story! A story of how everything can change in a split second. A story of what it is all really about! I was pulled in within the first few pages and could not put it down!

The main characters Norman and Rosa experience such strong emotions and the way Dianna writes has the reader feeling those emotions right along side them.

I couldn't help but feel heartache for both Norman and Rosa. For Norman for being so down on his luck and for Rosa for having lived such a hard life from such a young age.

From the moment their paths crossed I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next!

I would definitely recommend Broken Lights and I know I will read it again and again!

Disclosure: This ebook was provided by the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.

'Broken Lights' is an unconventional romance, which has a beautiful rawness and realism to it. Wonderfully written and developed, Dianna Hardy's 40k novella follows the characters Norman and Rosa and their chance meeting, a meeting which changes their lives.

What I loved especially about this read was not only its uniqueness in the genre creating a fresh and bold read, but the strength of the characters. Norman especially was a character who was easy to fall in love with. His brokenness was endearing and his road to discovery was lovely.

'Broken Lights' is a must-read standalone novella for fiction romance fans.

WOW what a beautiful read, dianna can write anything and I always find her books amazing.

I was given this as an arc in return for an honest review and here it is.

A tale about heartbreak, danger, love and a life changing experience. This maybe a short story but is packed with so much punch, Diana's amazing with her tales I never bore of anything she writes, I cried and laughed out loud with this and thoroughly enjoyed every moment, this book well deserves the 5 stars I have given and would score it more if I could , I strongly recommend this book if you are looking for a little romance with a little danger then this is for you. Well done dianna

Wow. I wish I could form words properly to write a review worthy of this book. Dianna isn't kidding when she describes all of her writing different every time.

I will admit, after seeing the cover I thought the story would be your typical love story that makes me roll my eyes and make disgusted noises that my unromantic self seems to do with other love themed books. That isn't the case at all. I was sucked in from the beginning.

Dianna did a fantastic job bringing alive two tortured souls who find themselves thrown together in a life and death situation that ultimately becomes something they both needed in their own way. Very beautifully written. I would recommend completely.

Dianna Hardy is a completely new author to me, I had an opportunity to buy one of her books and I chose this standalone as an introduction to her work.

The story was unexpected and basically happens in the space of one night. Two unlikely souls meeting, two very different backgrounds who have the potential to save each other. This book has drama, thrills and hope. The characters are relatable, the individual characters backgrounds are familiar stories and I wasn't sure how the two would connect. An unlikely pairing but it really worked well. Towards the end of the book I was rooting for them to work, and I found my heart in my mouth at one point, unsure where or how the story was going to end.

I really enjoyed the story and read it over the course of a few days. I would definitely read more from this author.

I didnt find this story to be very "dynamic" which may be the word that appears the most. The hero is just a lot of sad sackery. Though he mans up a little frankly he just wasn't appealing for all of the prior patheticness. If you're looking for a total change from alphas this guy is for you but if you want a hero with spine then you'll probably be just as disappointed as me. The heroine also had a pretty sad story but it was actually sad rather than pathetic. Either way no emotions came through for me on this. The plot was odd and not in a good way. It didn't draw me in it didn't make me care about the outcome. The writing was fine but overall I was just bored with this book because I couldn't get into either character separately and i definitely didn't buy their chemistry as a couple.

When you lose everything and the world turns against you, what do you have to live for?

Norman had nothing, but fate and an act of heroism leads him to Rosa, a victim of circumstance with a tortured soul. Forced together they must fight to save their lives, but also find themselves.

Dianna Hardy pushes stereotype to deliver a deeply powerful and beautiful story of betrayal and hurt but ultimately love.
