Some things are not always what they appear to be So Nick Fallon discovers when he is hired to investigate the death of a young man whose body is found buried in a wooded canyon area of Los Angeles. Not that he s surprised. After ten years in law enforcement, Nick is pretty much used to the unexpected. However, he soon becomes frustrated by the bizarre behavior of his client John Hammond, and the apparent indiscretion of his business partner, Jeff Stevens.
Nick s investigation leads him to a gay bar in LA, and from there to the still recovering city of New Orleans where he finds what appear to be the answers to the mystery. But what he has unraveled is only a small part of the truth. What remains is even more terrible a trap where the price of pleasure is death.
Along the way, Nick is reminded of the often-high cost of friendship, and that trust and honesty are essential elements in any relationship be it friend, or lover.
J.P. Bowie was born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland. He wrote his first (unpublished) novel a science fiction tale of brawny men and brawnier women that made him a little suspect in the eyes of his family for a while.
Leaving home at age eighteen for the bright lights of London, he found himself in the midst of a “diverse and creative crowd that eventually led him to the performing arts. For the next twelve years he sang, danced and acted his way around the theatres of London and the provinces, appearing in shows with many famous British singers, actors and comedians.
After immigrating to the US and living for many years in Las Vegas where he worked for that incomparable duo, Siegfried and Roy, J.P. found himself entranced by the fair city of San Diego where he currently lives with his partner, Phil.

Mystery wise, the second book in Nick Fallon Investigation series is better than the first book. At least, in this one, there's a dead body, and the readers are guessing who the perpetrator(s) are along with Nick. There's a slight twist regarding some of the characters that appear in the book; that they don't tell the truth upfront. But, it's still a light mystery to me compared to some m/m murder mysteries I have read.
Relationship wise, I enjoy the take to the established couple, Nick and Eric as well as Jeff and his artist/psychic partner, Peter. There is one incident here with Jeff, which results in a problem in his relationship with Peter -- and I like the way it handles. While Nick and Eric seem solid; and I feel that Eric is a good balance to Nick's more outburst character. It's always fun to read story where the couples have been together for years.
This book's more a mistery, than the first one and I really couldn't put it down till I finished! Good to know there's another sequel (which I'm planning to read right about now :D), coz the ending was quite frustrating - I hope the bad guys (and gals) would get what they deserve!
Loved Nick all the more here, loved Eric and wished there's been more of him! And I loved Jeff and Peter, so happy they managed to work things out betweem them and fast! And that's another thing I like about these series - MCs communicating!!! They're talking with each other about problems and there's no stupid misunderstanding cliches and such.
My review is in spoiler tags because it hasn't been edited yet and I do most of my note taking on my phone which makes for some creative wording due to the spellchecker. This review probable has too much negative stuff as that's what I tend to think to write down. If I'm enjoying myself, I don't want to stop reading!
There could be actual spoilers, though, so you've been warned.
This is the second in the Nick Fallon mysteries and an intense ride. Nick finds himself trying to locate how a client's date died and why. John Hammond is Nick's client reads in the paper that a body had been found buried and discovers that this is the same man who stood him up for a date 3 months earlier. John is the type of client Nick dislikes, he's a pathological liar, unstable, and violent. Nick finds that though he hates John, his natural curiosity makes him wonder what happen to Robert Landon ( the man found dead and buried) the man whom everyone seems to have liked. Also, friend and business partner, Jeff Stevens seems to be having problems with his lover Peter Brandon. Peter who is a talented and sought after artist, seems to be getting more and more popular, and he seems to be neglecting his lover Jeff. Jeff is frustrated and angry, will an encounter with a man at a bar cause Jeff to stray? What a wonderful and fun read! I love the relationship between Nick & Eric, they balance each other nicely. This series is even better then the Portrait series! So sit back and enjoy!***Just as good as the first time I read it.3/25/16
Warning: There isn't a cliffhanger per-se, but the mystery wasn't completely solved in this books. I was slightly put out about that. But at least it wasn't a relationship cliffhanger. Those I really loathe.
This is the second book in the series. I felt that this wasn't as intense as the first book, which started out with a tragedy and was more focused on Nick and as it got closer to the end, Eric, Nick's boyfriend.
Nick was trying to solve a case which seemed to be given to him to distract and turn him in circles. There were a lot of suspect characters to keep track of in this one, where the previous book there was only one.
There was a lot of funny/dry humor, a side story involving his working partner's love life, and lots of curious and mystery clues. And one really weird character, John Hammond. But it all worked together somehow, in spite of the open ending. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series. Thank goodness it's already out!

This second in the Nick Fallon Investigation series is worth the read for the twist and turns alone. I really enjoyed the first in the series because of the thriller aspect, so reading the second was a nice addition.
I also enjoy reading mystery novels where there are longterm coupled relationships. Hunky Nick Fallon and his partner Eric as well as private eye Jeff and his artist (sometimes psychic) partner, Peter make the backstory of this novel even more enjoyable, though not overwhelming the twisty-mystery. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves mysteries with solid twists and turns.
Book two in Mr. Bowie's series A Nick Fallon Investigation, A Deadly Deception, has dead bodies, plot twists, New Orleans Drag Queens, deceit, and enough mystery to satisfy even the most dedicated mystery fiend. I'm loving this series. Two books down, one to go. I give A Deadly Deception four stars.
