Reverend Curtis Black #1

Casting the First Stone

Rate this book
Tanya Black has everything a woman could want: a fulfilling career, a beautiful daughter, an elegant home, and a handsome, charismatic husband who is pastor at a prominent Baptist church. And yet, none of it can hide the growing turbulence in her marriage, which suddenly has Tanya doubting what she once cherished.

Then Curtis goes too far, and Tanya's confronted with the worst betrayal a woman can face. Plunged into a bittersweet journey of discovery, she suddenly finds herself learning painful new lessons about love, loyalty, and sensual temptation. . ..and discovering the wisdom to celebrate the victories that are hers alone.

Casting The First Stone listens in on the heart of a woman torn between loving who her husband was and hating who he has become. Roby weaves a fast-paced story about faith's challenges in a world made up of material desires and other physical temptations. Taken right from the headlines, Roby's cautionary tale looks at the other side of church politics and the emotional toll it takes.

I read this book years ago. But I remember that I really liked it. I read it quickly because indeed it was a page turner. I liked it because it is the reality of many reverends and 1st lady's of the church. I was really young when I read it and it was my first time reading Christian fiction. But although I really liked it then, I imagine my rating may have been a bit lower if I would read it now.
Not because it wasnt an interestingly well-written novel, but because it was stereotypical and cliched. I quit reading Christian fiction because I feel if you've read one you've read them all. No creativity. Most Christian fiction books that I've read, the pastor cheats, the wife knows it, he's usually cheating with someone in the church, he's stealing money from the church; typical. Although I did enjoy this book, I wish that many Christian novelist wouldnt make the black church seem so.....unholy and focus on other levels of drama.

The first of Pastor Black series! This book was something else. When I read it I had to ask is this
based on the truth? Truely I believe so because I am commenting on this books years after I read the book.
This book got me hooked on this author and I can't wait for the next book each year.

This book kept my attention from beginning to end. These types of things really happen not just in the church but in the world period. Curtis could've caught these hands a couple times cause wtf was going on with him?? He had it good but messed it all up being foolish. Deceiving all the people in the church and being greedy. I'm going to read the next book in the series.

I enjoyed every minute of it although Tanya got on my everlasting nerves!!!!! Took her forever to finally get her lick back. And poor Curtis. I would've been beating his a** cause whaaaaaat? Sadly, that's how most Pastors are these days. I will be reading the series but not just yet.

Listened to the audiobook. Loved the narrator’s voice variation for the different characters. Whew, chile Pastor Curtis is ALOT. As much as I would love to see this as a TV show, I picture it as Greenleaf 2.0 and might be too much for TV! Can’t wait to see how the rest of the series is!

I’ve been trying to read this book for several years not months but years each time I get into it I got a little upset due to the subject matter. A pastor of a mega church being a total hypocrite didn’t sit well with me so I fell right now I was in a better place to read this book and finally I did it was good it is what I expected. I’m very happy that I read it and will be reading The other books in the series. Just one more word about Pastor black I have known secular men to stepped out on their wives. As well of The clergy’s who have done the same. This is a cautionary tale of when I man believe he is better than the word of God and he gets straight up caught up.

Y’all! The Rem and First Lady of Faith Missionary Baptist Chutch!! (I spelled all of that correctly. If you don’t speak Southern Baptist, you won’t get it, lol) They done stressed me OUT! This was a very entertaining, drama-filled read. It was a bit different than my deeply emotional reads-I read romance for crying out loud-but it was good. It was a sort of “pick me up coming off of my read before this one, and it didn’t disappoint! I’ve had my eye on this series for almost a year, and I’m glad that the first book has intrigued me enough to continue the rest of the series.

Soooo much when on, I have no earthly idea now the next books will go, but I pray that KLR can keep me entertained thought out. I don’t know WHAT the Rem gon do now! Lol!

Takeaways from this book: Don’t ever get too big for your own britches. (I’m like 127 year old. I’m not even joking. 😂) God will grant us increase, but we must always remain humble. Appreciate what God has given you; don’t be greedy! Temptations WILL arise, but God has equipped us to resist, IF we cling to Him. And I don’t care who you think you are, the world will snatch you up by the throat, and will eat you up and spit you out if you let it!

God bless ya, Rem. Curtis Black.

The mess, Chile. 😂

wow, what can I say about this book apart from it being awesome...but seriously though, I was captivated from beginning to end. As the pages I read increased, the more I did not want this book to end but on the other hand I wanted desperately to find out a lot of things. I loved the suspense she brought into this book as well as that sense of realness that was added.
I learned such things as no man has the right to judge another human being, everybody sins and fall short of the glory of God, God doesn't give us more than we can bear, and even when your child means everything to you, you cannot let yourself go unattended in a loveless, violent marriage. There are many more lessons and advice that readers can take with them to reality.
This is my first book by Kimberla Roby and I can't wait to read another.

I enjoyed this book. The plot kept me interested and the mess of Curtis Black! That being said, sometimes Tanya’s internal monologue was a little too long winded and made me want to speed through those parts. Some of the dialogue was also a bit too much but all in all I really enjoyed the book.

Reverend Curtis Black is the minister to a faithful congregation in Chicago. He and his wife Tonya are upstanding members of the church and community. But when rumors of Curtis start to spread around the church that he has been unfaithful to his wife with other church members, Tonya's not sure what to do. Whenever she questions Curtis, his first instinct is to lie to her and she knows it. How will Tonya find out what is really going on? And what lengths will she go through to do so?

I have read a few of Kimberla Lawson Roby's books in the past, even a few in this series, but I never knew how it all started. This book had me on edge. It's books like these that have people doubting the church, but it is also something that really goes on. I don't know what I would do if I suspected my husband of cheating, let alone if he was a minister who was teaching people right from wrong every day.

This book had me laughing out loud and dying to know what was going to happen next. If you have never read one of Kimberla Lawson Roby's books, this is a good one to start with.

This book was recommended to me and I'm glad I read it.
What I like most about the book is, although it's fiction it's definitely relatable! I can recall numerous preachers that have been caught up in sex scandals i.e.: Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, Pastor Eddie Long, Catholic Priests, and last but not least, all of the 4th District Missionary Baptist Association of Louisiana, PIMPS!
This book wasn't one that I couldn't put down but it did keep me more than interested in reading it to the end. I didn't have a favorite part or a least favorite part, but it is a story that I want to continue to read and see how things pan out for Pastor Black and all involved!, so with that being said I will be reading "Too Much of a Good Thing" which is the next book in the series.

This is the first book in the series of 10 on Reverend Curtis Black. A good read and a page-turner. Like Curtis Black said,"there is no reward in gaining the whole world just to lose your own soul". He learned this himself. I'm looking foward to reading the 2nd book in the series,"Too Much of a Good Thing and the 3rd book, "The Best-Kept Secret.(I already read series 4 through 10).

Kimberla changed the game with this drama in the church house and shedding light on these crooked pastors. This book was perfection, I read most of the series, but got tired about reading about the same characters. This book was excellent and wildly entertaining! You will not be disappointed.

I have hit a bit of a high-brow reading slump, which has been frustrating, but I am glad that it allowed me to discover the Curtis Black series! In Casting the First Stone, introduces us to Reverend Curtis Black, an all-too-familiar archetype of the adulterous, hypocritical preacher who is using his religious power to abuse many, and dupe the rest.

With Curtis, Roby has created an infuriating but fascinating semi-protagonist, who I'll be looking forward to reading more about in the coming months. His life and everything he touches is nothing short of a trainwreck, but it's a collision you want to watch until its very end—much like everyday gossip surrounding the "saints and ain'ts" in our churches. It's this strange magnetism of Curtis that makes Roby's work seem so very real, as we've all seen some clearly problematic "men of God" amass cult-like followings who overlook their wrong deeds, like many of the church-going characters in this book do for Curtis. I was deeply struck by Roby's suggestion here, that this blind faith says as much about the "flocks" willing to be led as it does about the corrupt leaders, because it's probably much more important to correct.

Despite Curtis' natural allure, the most captivating character in this book, is his wife, Tanya, whose struggle to stay true to her faith and morals in the midst of her husband's countless betrayals is more compelling and relatable than the pastor's story. I'm interested to see how these books will go once Curtis himself takes on the role of a humbled underdog struggling to rebuild his life, and not a villainous (and slightly pitiable) counterpart to the more enjoyable Tanya.

Like I mentioned earlier, Casting the First Stone is the first in a series of fifteen books about Curtis and his family (the final installment, , comes out in the end of July!) One of my new summer reading goals will be to knock out the other fourteen before the last one premieres, so I'm sure I'll have more thoughts as I go along.

So far, I'm enjoying how easy Roby's books are to get through, and trying to think about what more they might have to say about those of us under church leadership. My first take: powerful, charismatic men are often no good for/manipulative to the church, but boy, are they something to watch...

Not very often do I find myself so drawn to a book that I can't put it down. However in the case of "Casting the First Stone," I was definitely drawn. Never before has a book written about the happenings behind closed doors in churches been discussed before. Not only that, but this is the first book which does not make the preacher totally innocent but rather,it shows that although he is a man of God, he is still a man.

Also, in this book, I found that a lot of what was happening in the book I see in my church at times as well as other people churches. You have preachers talking about one thing but yet doing sinful things behind closed doors. The author does a brilliant job in making her characters extremely real and keeping the words true to real life.

Therefore, for anyone who wants to know what really goes on after the church services have ended, this is the book for you.

If you like drama and I mean drama this is a perfect book to read. Tanya is married to Curtis Black a "wanna-be" all that preacher of an african-american baptist church. Girlfriend should have got a dog instead, at least they are loyal. She is in a bad marriage trying to work thru things and live a christian life. But sometimes you just can not turn the other cheek. I think the message had good intent but I just could not relate to the characters. Yes, women be strong, be true to yourself above all. Glad I wasn't writing for the character Curtis b/c Tanya would have killed him in the beginning of the book in a "christian" way. (smile)

After my book club read by , several members loved it so much they wanted us to go back to this book, the first in the Rev. Curtis Black series.

I liked that one; this one was OK; I hope we don't have to read another. I'm a good book club member. I don't mind reading things outside of my usual comfort zone. They have read several that I selected, even one that I wrote. I won't complain.

wow... definitely one of my favourites.
Curtis made me so fucking angry, the manipulation, arrogant behaviour and that embarrassing victim complex :/ I’m happy Deacon Johnson beat the shit out this guy, I was sitting there wanting to throw hands with a fictional character lol. My jaw was on the floor when Charlotte announced she was 3 months pregnant! OH and the fucking hypocrisy was repulsive, shaming his followers into funding his affairs and dirty secrets, publicly denouncing greedy, adulterous fake christians while actively participating in what he preached against... So happy Tanya and Alicia got their happy ending and Curtis can suck a fat one <3

The Reverend Curtis Black is a trip!! I will not spoil it for any of you that have not read this book. But I will say that this book is a snippet of what is really going on in a lot of churches amongst the various denominations. It is also a snippet of the reality that different women suffer from being with a man that doesn't respect them and women that don't know their worth because they stay with these men. I can't wait to begin the next book in this series.

All the Curtis Black books are full of DRAMA and this one gets it all started. I couldn't believe this man had the nerve to step foot in a church let alone call himself a pastor. He was too much. I read this book a long time ago. Long before my Kindle love affair began. Lol. Happy reading.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If I was judging by today’s standards, it would probably be about a 3.5 because the shock factor of the book is completely lost in 2024. Just for context, today is the day that Diddy was indicted for some heinous crimes that I won’t go into; however, thinking about it from the year 2000 set in the early 90s, this was a really great and relatable book.

I was raised in the Baptist Church and unfortunately the things that happened in this book happened and still do more frequently than I think anyone realizes or cares to admit. I’m specifically reminded of an incident where a classmate of mine in high school was pregnant by the pastor of one of the prominent churches in our small town. She was also the same age as his son and he was considered to be her godbrother. It was such a gross story and he actually ended up marrying this young girl. What a mess.

The book took me three days to read, and I was sick as a dog on one of those days so it’s not a complicated read. The author does a great job of character development and engaging the readers. I’m really looking forward to reading the entire series. Kimberla Lawson Roby is the kind of author that makes me want to follow my dream of writing a novel. She just does an amazing job of setting the scene and taking you back to a place that’s so familiar. I can’t wait to see what raggedy ole Curtis is up to going forward lol.

It really is so often the pastor,so generally not shocked .What is shocking was the expanse of his dalliances and atrocities. Wow...rather than serial cheater, he is with multiple woman concurrently and as he trumpets morality from the pulpit he exemplifies moral turpitude! Worse yet,I believe wife reconciles me him in later in the series! 😲I so hope I am wrong!!

I recently joined a book club and Casting the First Stone is our first book. At first I was very sad because I just read a different book by this author and I thought it was mostly awful. This book engaged me immediately and I really enjoyed the story. I thought Curtis Black was such a terrible husband and father and my first impression of his wife Tanya Black was that she might be a doormat type of personality. As the story progressed I was proved wrong as she most certainly was not. I have always said that I do not like series. Kimberla Lawson Roby just changed that. I'm looking forward to my new book club and the next book.
