She founded the Totto Foundation, named for the eponymous and autobiographical protagonist of her book Totto-chan, The Little Girl at the Window. The Foundation professionally trains deaf actors, implementing Kuroyanagi's vision of bringing theater to the deaf.
In 1984, in recognition of her charitable works, Kuroyanagi was appointed to be a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, being the first person from Asia to hold this position. During the late 1980s and the 1990s, she visited many developing countries in Asia and Africa for charitable works and goodwill missions, helping children who had suffered from disasters and war as well as raising international awareness of the situations of children in poor countries. Kuroyanagi has raised more than $20 million for the UNICEF programmes that she has been involved in, through television fund-raising campaigns. She also used the royalties from her bestselling book, Totto-chan, to contribute to UNICEF.
In 1997, Kuroyanagi published the book Totto-chan's Children, which was based on her experience working for as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador from 1984 to 1996. Kuroyanagi is a director of the Japanese branch of the World Wildlife Fund.
Kuroyanagi has twice brought America's National Theater of the Deaf to Japan, acting with them in sign language.
For her involvement in media and television entertainment, Kuroyanagi won the Japanese Cultural Broadcasting Award, which is the highest television honour in Japan. Since then, she has been voted 14 times as Japan¡¯s favourite television personality, for the show Tetsuko¡¯s Room.[3]
In 2000, Kuroyanagi became the first recipient of the Global Leadership for Children Award, which was established by UNICEF in the 10th anniversary of the 1990 World Summit for Children. Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window is a children's book written by Japanese television personality and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. The book was published originally as "Madogiwa no Totto-chan" in 1981, and became an instant bestseller in Japan.
The book is about the values of the unconventional education that Kuroyanagi received at Tomoe Gakuen, a Tokyo elementary school founded by educator Sosaku Kobayashi during World War II, and it is considered her childhood memoir.
The book begins with Totto-chan's mother coming to know of her daughter's expulsion from public school.
Her mother realizes that what Totto-chan needs is a school where more freedom of expression is permitted. Thus, she takes Totto-chan to meet the headmaster of the new school, Mr. Kobayashi. From that moment a friendship is formed between master and pupil. ...

This book introduced me to the amazing world of memoirs. It deals with the story of Totto-Chan and her unconventional school called Tomoe Gakuen and its Headmaster, Sosaku Kobayashi. Rereading this book is just like reinventing my childhood. This little girl at the window brings a cartload of nostalgia with her. I was happy to hear that it was included in the curriculum in many countries as a textbook. I was also stunned to hear that it was banned in some school libraries as a television personality wrote it.
If you have children, please give them this book to read. I think that this should be one of the first books that every child should read.

Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window was written by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, a Japanese actress, who wrote this memoir based on her childhood experience at Tomoe Gakuen primary school, before World War II.
Totto-chan, who was labeled as a troublemaker by her teacher, was forced to leave school. Her anxious mother then took her to Tomoe Gakuen, a school ran by headmaster Mr. Kobayashi, who had utterly different views on schooling than the other educators of his time. He was an educator who believed respect, encouragement and freedom are keys to a child's better development than punishment and boxing the child according to adults' own liking.
I first read this book when I was a kid, probably about Totto-chan's age or a bit older. Reading this book/memoir as a kid is the same like reading a fairytale of a little girl stumbling into Wonderland. In a sense, Totto-chan's experience in Tomoe Gakuen really is nothing less than a fairytale comes true: Totto-chan and her friends studied in classrooms made of train-carriages (due to the lack of fund for real classrooms), their teachers taught them to dance, to express themselves freely and gave out nontraditional lessons, their headmaster spent time listening to what the children had to say and talked to them like equals...there're so much more to be explored as we follow Totto-chan making new discoveries about herself and the world around her. And through the writing, you can sense there's always love, so much love surrounding the children: love among parents and children, among Totto-chan and friends, among teachers and students.
But happiness always comes to an end, just like every childhood must. With the approaching of war and food shortage, Totto-chan slowly learnt the harsh truth of life through the death of her friends, etc. The small wonders and adventures of the children was I admit I had tear in my eyes whenever I recalled the events and the endearing characters in Totto-chan. It is a book which is both insightful, rich and moving at the same time. If you ever encountered someone who's like headmaster Mr. Kobayashi, then count yourself a lucky soul.

When I am in the mood for a light read (especially as a palate reliever after an intense one), I tend to choose either romcoms or children's books. These aren't taxing on the brain and can be completed quickly. I expected my latest pick in this department to be exactly as such: complete quickly and forget quickly. What I never expected was this beautiful heart-touching tale!
Totto-chan is an old & supposedly popular children's book. However, to my utter embarrassment, I hadn't even heard of it till last year when someone here had posted about it. Now I regret not having read it earlier.
Totto-chan is an interesting compilation of a little girl's adventures and experiences during pre-war and wartime Japan. The short chapters cover in detail Totto-chan's years at the radical Tomoe Gakuen school in grades 1 & 2 and her personal life at the same time. (BTW, this book would make a great bedtime read-aloud companion for children: short chapters with lots of possible topics for discussion.)
Totto-chan shows how an acceptance of a little child's natural naughtiness can go on to create a positive change in the child. It also demonstrates the importance of having the right teachers and the right attitude towards children. Most importantly, it teaches the importance of listening attentively and of not labelling your children.
Some of the situations in the book made me instinctively feel that people would never behave like that in real life. So I was quite stunned to read in the epilogue that these were actual events that occurred in the author's childhood: that she was Totto-chan!
Though it is a children's story, I feel parents and teachers also have much to learn from this book. If all schools were like Tomoe Gakuen and all teachers like Mr. Kobayashi, the world would have much better and well-rounded citizens in its future. A must-read book, I say!

sebuah buku yang berasal dari kisah nyata penulisnya. menyentuh dan inspiratif tentang bagaimana memahami anak anak dan dunianya. anak anak dengan kepolosan dan rasa ingin tahunya, terkadang disalahartikan oleh orang dewasa. dan perlakuan yang salah dari orang dewasa inilah yang terkadang membuat anak-anak tak bisa berkembang bebas dan menemukan jati diri serta potensinya
adalah soseki kobayashi, seorang tokoh pendidik dan pemusik yang mendirikan tomoe gakuen tempat totto chan dan 49 orang anak lainnya bersekolah. tidak seperti sekolah konvensional, di tomoe, anak-anak diberi kebebasan, kepercayaan yang memungkinkan mereka untuk tumbuh optimal dan kreatif. sekolah dan para guru bukanlah musuh anak yang harus ditakuti. tetapi bisa menjadi sahabat yang memahami dunia mereka. sebuah buku yang seharusnya dibaca oleh mereka yang mengaku pendidik, pencinta anak dan para orang tua.

Gosh at last i finished this book, took me 2 days to finish. And here is my review
Splendid and awesome, highly recommended to those who are interested in childhood story and education.
Totto chan is a girl that full of passions and very active. With such personal traits it is not easy for a traditional school to educate her. She ended up being expelled from her first school because the teacher just couldn¡¯t manage her, she is such a nuisance to the others. Teachers eventually gave up on her and sadly she was expelled from her first school.
Her mother then sent her to Tomoe, and alternative school where the studying activities done in fun way, the pupils were given so much room to express their creativity, they were encouraged to go out and play, understand the nature, get the first hand experience from the real life practitioner (the farmer). There is no such thing as fixed seating arrangement in this school, children were free to chose in which chair they wanted to seat, and even they can even pick the subject they want to study, in short they were given such luxury of freedom which they wont get it in a conventional school, thanks to head master Mr Kobayashi the person she adored very much. He is children loving - teacher, who traveled and study the education in Europe and came back to Japan to set up the school of his dream.
Tobby Chan enjoyed school life very much, and this book is compilation of the experiences she went through during that school period, the setting was in Japanese world war 2 period.
There are some story that touched me and remind me how innocent we were as a children. When she found coin in the train and felt guilty but somehow she hid the money in the thicket hole only eventually found out later that the money mysteriously disappeared (I still thinking where the hell the money gone). The other time when she jumped onto the piece of paper that laying on the school ground only to find out that it was a temporary cover of a cesspool, and other time she ended up jumping into mixture of wall plaster and get suck in there until mother come to the rescue.
And as a child she had to deal with the feeling of loss. She lost her German shepherd (Rocky, the big one who is very loyal to her yet he once bitten her ear to bleed), lost his buddy Takahashi with whom she climbed her school tree together (this is very sad part). She went to hospital to visit the wounded soldiers, and console them by singing some children songs and yet since she didn¡¯t know the songs she only stood there silence and she eventually sang her heart out the very simple song the used to sing before having their lunch and miraculously brought the soldier to tears (very touching part)
The book is ended with American bombardment, the school was destroyed completely, and until Mr Kobayahi died he couldn¡¯t rebuild the school and it turned out that the very area where the school stood (it consisted of some used car trains) now converted into a shopping mall. Sad ending indeed. But all in all it is very good book to read and worth reading, highly recommended one !!!!

Musim libur sekolah. Selesai ujian kelulusan atau kenaikan kelas, anak-anak menikmati liburan dengan suka-cita. Mereka bermain sepanjang hari tiada bosannya. Memang dunia mereka adalah dunia bermain-main yang tak akan pernah selesai.
Hanya mereka? Oh, tidak! Pada orang-orang dewasa juga bersemayam jiwa kanak-kanak yang ternyata suka bermain-main pula. Lihatlah pada komputer, telpon genggam atau perangkat orang dewasa lainnya, terselip di dalamnya media permainan yang secara sengaja menjadi ajang main-main bagi orang dewasa pada jam-jam kantor maupun di luar jam kantor. Lihat pula dalam bentuk yang lebih sederhana dan dilakukan oleh masyarakat luas, di pojok areal parkir, sudut kampung, atau ujung trotoar di depan pertokoan, para orang dewasa asyik bergerombol bermain catur atau gaple dalam durasi yang biasanya lebih dari separuh hari.
Jadi aktivitas kita sejak masa kanak-kanak hingga dewasa sesungguhnya hanyalah bermain-main. Bekerja sekalipun sesungguhnya bermain-main. Perhatikan, betapa asyiknya operator crane di pelabuhan yang dengan tuas dan tombol dapat memindahkan butiran jagung dari kapal curah ke hoper untuk kemudian dibawa ke pabrik pakan dengan truk atau kontainer. Betapa asyiknya anak kandang setiap kali memberi makan ayam-ayamnya. Begitu masuk kandang, ayam-ayam itu bergegas menjulurkan leher keluar menyambut kedatangannya. Dan lihatlah ketika pakan sudah tertaburkan merata, mereka serentak mematuk-matuk pakan bersama-sama.
Pekerjaan kantoran pun tak kalah mengasyikkan, tust kayboard, mesin faximile, telepon, dan alat-alat perkantoran yang lain, adalah media bermain-main yang mengasyikkan bagi karyawan. Betapa indah dan nikmatnya bila setiap pekerjaan dihayati seperti anak-anak yang sedang bermain-main.
Ketika kawan saya (Desianto B. Utomo, Vice President Feed Technology PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia) belajar di Inggris selama enam tahun, anak-anaknya masuk pendidikan dasar di sana. Pada pedidikan setingkat TK sampai tahun pertama SD mereka terus diajak bermain-main, membuat kue, bermain sandiwara, menanam biji-bijian, praktik mencampur warna, dan lain sebagainya. Betapa bangganya ketika di rumah ia mempraktikkan membuat kue lalu mempersilahkan seluruh keluarga mencicipi kue karya sendiri. Di lain waktu betapa imajinatifnya anaknya ketika memerankan Raja Arthur dan menjadikan bapak ¨C ibu nya di rumah sebagai punggawa yang dia atur ini-itu.
Tidak ada pekerjaan rumah, tidak ada menghafal abjad atau angka-angka. Kurikulum pendidikan dasar kita di mata mereka dinilai sangat hebat, selepas TK anak-anak di Indonesia sudah bisa membaca. Tapi ternyata tidak merangsang kreativitas dan kemandirian si anak, karena ya itu tadi, kurang bermain-main! Bermain-main bagi kurikulum pendidikan Inggris bukan main-main. Dan hasilnya bukan main!
Tahun ajaran baru kali ini, anak gadisnya yang dulu TK dan SD di Inggris, baru saja lulus SMA di sini. Untuk melanjutkan kuliah ia ingin kembali ke Inggris (lagi). Beberapa waktu lalu, ia menyampaikan rencana dan argumentasinya mengapa ia ingin belajar di sana -- termasuk disiplin ilmu yang dipilihnya sendiri. Setelah kami tanya ini-itu dan ia dengan percaya diri sanggup melaksanakan agendanya itu, kami merestui. Dan dirinya menitipkan kata Selamat belajar anakku, selamat bermain-main!
Dari apa yang diungkap di atas, ternyata saya temukan dalam buku Totto Chan. Anak-anak memiliki karakter yang natural. Jiwa mereka bebas penuh rasa ingin tahu. Dan dunia pendidikan kita sering menjadi pembatas. Membatasi ruang gerak dan kreativitas mereka. Pendidikan kita sering menanamkan program-program tanpa kompromi yang membuat mereka seperti robot.
Dunia sekolah terkadang menjadi tempat yang menakutkan. Saya melihat dan meperhatikan keponakan-keponakan saya -- maklum saya belum jadi ayah-- yang sering mengeluh saat sekolah. Berbagai macam buku dijejalkan ke dalam tas mereka. Dan sekolah berlangsung dari pagi hingga sore hari. Setelah pulang tak ada aktivitas yang bisa mereka lakukan selain duduk melepas lelah bersama televisi. Dan waktu malam yang santai dihabiskan dengan mengerjakan segudang PR yang aduhai banyaknya. Singkat kata, sekolah tidak menjadi komunitas yang menyenangkan. Semua dilakukan dengan tujuan hanya menjadi pintar menurut standar rapot. Kakak saya, sebagai orang tua mencoba berdiskusi mengenai masalah itu. Namun, sang guru juga berkilah dirinya juga dikejar target-target yang harus dilewati. Sedih, tapi itulah realita pada umumnya.
