The Book Of Shade

Rate this book
Lily Coltrane’s to-do list for starting university life is pretty simple:
1. Make friends
2. Meet a cute guy
3. Survive her first year in Modern History
In the little English town of Piketon this seems more than achievable, so much so that Lily even joins The Illustrious Minds Literary Society, an extra-curricular club that promises a truly unique social experience. What Lily doesn’t bank on are the Society’s monthly visits to the mysterious Theatre Imaginique at the edge of town, a dark venue that houses the most obscure cavalcade of carnival performers she has ever laid eyes on.
Stranger still is the emergence of the theatre’s enigmatic proprietor Lemarick Novel, a stupendous showman with a frosty wit who never seems to smile, and who raises a plethora of questions in Lily’s fearful mind. How does he levitate with no sign of wires or mirrors? How do the lightning bolts that shoot from his hands look so real? And why, of all the people in the theatre, do his pale eyes keep locking on hers?
The answers to this and more lie buried in heritage and blood. The Book of Shade is opening, and Lily Coltrane will read it, whether she wants to or not.

This book was delightfully British with Gok Wan references and "cheeky git" thrown in. I enjoyed the lore aspect and all the supernatural elements and powers but I found the writing a bit dispassionate. Maybe it's just me but it felt stilted at points. We were getting major events impacting the main characters life and I didn't sympathise with her at all. I was a spectator and not invested emotionally throughout.

Our main character is Lily Coltrane and her journey into discovering what she is and what she can do. A typical student Lily is glad to be away from her cold mother and instantly strikes up a friendship with her new roommate Jazmine. They enroll together for The Illustrious Minds Literary Society, an extra-curricular club that promises a truly unique social experience. Basically a book club that has free tickets each month to Theater Imaginique. An old fashioned theater with a Victorian Gothic feel and unbelievable performers.

There she meets Lemarick Novel a magnificent showman and proprietor of the theater. His incredible acts and focused scrutiny of her makes Lily question everything she sees. When she finds out that Novel isn't just a magician performing tricks but actual magic her world is shaken but determined and scared to find out more of this new world that she should have been part of since birth.

The world building and all the new supernatural elements regarding the Shades and their Book was interesting, innovating and a pleasure to read. But like I said at the beginning at times especially in between the new information the writing, for me, just didn't feel vibrant. I didn't get that feeling you get with certain books where you are completely sucked in and feel what the characters feel.

I will nevertheless keep an eye out for the series and the author.

Initial review:
Yes! Oh, yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
What a ride.

I'm usually wary of books with so few reviews and such an amazing overall rating. So far, these books have hardly ever lived up to my expectations - quite the opposite, in fact, they tend to turn out a huge disappointment. Not this one, however. The Book of Shade deserves every single one of those four and five star ratings.
This story was absolutely unique in the Urban Fantasy genre. Here's why:

The concept. The book starts off like any other NA college novel, with Lily's arrival at campus, starting classes, building a social life. As soon as she sets foot into the Theatre Imaginique, though, it takes on a totally different direction. Aside from all the supernatural elements (this is Urban Fantasy, after all), the author keeps describing the most wondrous acrobatic and magical acts. The created atmosphere is very mystical and artsy, and extremely riveting.
Lemarick Novel. What a name, huh? As unusual and intriguing as its owner. I've never encountered a character like Novel before. Not only are his looks unlike any other hero's I've ever read about, with his white hair, icy eyes and almost androgynous stature, but also his personality. Novel is an enigma - closed off and serious as can be, quite eccentric in his fashion taste and manners, impatient but polite. An extremely complex and fascinating character I can't wait to get to know even better.
The supporting characters. Instead of giving us just the obligatory quirky best friend and maybe a well-developed antagonist, K.C. Finn created a wide array of amazing, interesting and well-elaborated secondary characters with a great variety of different personalities. Friends, villains, artist, each of them adds something special to the story.
Between every few chapters, the author added several cutouts from the monthly flyers showing the theater's playbills. Sometimes, they were quite funny (Salem Cross wields the buzzsaw - will the delightful Dharma be cleaved in half?; Biting the Bullet - The Slovak twins take aim at Monsieur Novel), and each month one of those cutouts would also show a little glimpse into the following chapter - and it would be our job to guess which one. I loved the idea. It was original and cute.

"Why don't you smile anymore?"
"Because it's not necessary," Novel said with a sigh. "I have seen and done everything worth smiling about already."

Elements that weren't exactly unique, but welcome all the same:
A great female lead. Lily is smart and curious, yet mature and sensible, with a very pleasant voice. There are no TSTL moments to speak of. All that made her very relatable and likable.
Beautiful, atmospheric writing that creates a mysterious, almost a little melancholy mood.
I loved the world building, too. We don't get overwhelmed with tons and tons of unnecessary information, but only bit by bit when the situation requires some explanation.

So, in case you haven't figured it out yet, I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it. 5 stars!

"Because you love her, Lemarick!" Salem pressed, "and love is freedom and fluidity and unpredictability and wild abandon and that's water . That's the spirit of the thing, and now you have it within you! Let yourself love her, and the elements will give you what you need!"

This is book one of the Shadeborn series, and it ends in a .

Lily Coltrane was just starting her first year at the university and looking to make new friends. After meeting her new roommate the pair decide to check out what clubs and activities are available. The Illustrious Minds Literary Society peaks the girls interest so they decide to check out the club to be involved and meet new people.

At the first meeting the girls find the club makes monthly visits to the Theatre Imaginique to see a performance of an obscure group of carnival performers. After meeting the proprietor Lemarick Novel, Lily finds that she herself has hidden abilities she didn't know existed and that she is a Shade and can do magic.

The Book of Shade turned into one of those reads that I wasn't sure what I should expect but am glad I picked it up to give it a try. A world of magic and paranormal was brought to life with the backdrop of this unique stage show at the theater. Our main character finds that she's part of this world all the while juggling her starting up college and classes.

Interesting characters and concepts all throughout the read kept me engaged in seeing where this would lead. Along with the world of the Shade comes those that hunt them and the mystery of how Lily is one herself. A bit of romance, paranormal, mystery and fantasy all combined into one intriguing read.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book. The magic system here is unique and different from any system i’ve ever read before.
The storyline went smoothly and there was not a single boring moment in there from start to end.
One my favourite reads of this year..

I wish there was more of world building. I know that it’s set in our daytime modern world, but there was practically no history for the families and pretty much no clear ranking for the different kinds of beings presented in the story. You only know that Shades are at the top of the list and vampires are at the bottom, whilst having no clue what so ever about what lies in between.

Other than Lily, Novel, and Jazzy; the absence of most of the characters background stories was frustrating. And I really wanted to know how the residents of the Imaginique came together in in the first place.

First, I absolutely LOVE the cover. It’s so different than any covers I’ve seen recently, which is perfect for such an unprecedented story. The cover reminds me of something I’ve seen before, though I’m not entirely sure what it is. Help me out here what does it remind you of?

As I said, The Book of Shade is a unique story; mysterious and full of wonderment. It’s nothing like any urban fantasy I’ve read before. It’s a blend of contemporary mixed with old world, a huge helping of supernatural and more than a dash of mystery rolled up in one brilliant package. I fancied the story after only a few pages, and it gained momentum at a rapid pace, completely enthralling me. The further in I went, the more difficult it was to set down. At one point I was loading the dishwasher and reading at the same time. My husband was like, “Uh.. good book? LOL.

The story is told from Lily’s POV, written in the third person. I normally prefer first person, but being able to read her inner thoughts made it feel much more personable. I really felt like I was inside of her head. Lily is cautious, but full of curiosity. She’s witty, but also serious. She’s brave regardless of her past and despite her frightening future. I totally love her! I was also happy that she and Jazzy, her freshman roommate, became fast friends. The characters from the theater made up quite an ensemble; ghastly and shocking. Lemarick Novel, the owner and headlining act of the Theatre Imaginique, is super creepy at first, but his character develops immensely throughout the story and he becomes more human, even though he isn’t. I absolutely love their relationship. Novel knows Lily’s secret even before she does, and he’s the one who has to break it to her. I was fully immersed in this dark, supernatural world right along with Lily. It wasn’t easy getting out, either. I want more!!!

I highly recommend The Book of Shade to all Urban Fantasy and Paranormal fans. This book must be moved to the top of your TBR pile at once! This easily slides into my top ten reads of 2013.

I received this book for free from GrownUp Fangirl Blog Tours in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

My Initial Reaction...

Okay, so at first, Book of Shade was weird and I didn't know what to make of it. But by the end, I couldn't put it down. K C Finn has created a fascinating fantasy world, filled with people and creatures I can't wait to know better!

The Characters...

Lily, from whose point of view Book of Shade is told, is a girl after my own heart. When we meet Lily she's moving into the dorms at University and preparing for her first semester. She's studious and smart, and I loved that she was a history major (since I'm an Historian). I think what I liked most about Lily was the way she grew throughout the novel. She starts off a bit awkward and just trying to find her way in university life, but as she grows to know more about herself and who she really is, she changes into a much stronger, more self-aware person.

Right off the bat we meet Lilly's roommate, Jazzy, who happens to be my favorite character in Book of Shade. Jazzy is so incredibly selfless and sweet - it shows through in everything she does. Her parents are wealthy and support Jazzy so well - but rather than being snobbish, Jazzy uses the overflow to help out (and often feed) Lilly. I would have liked to see more of her and hope we do in future novels

And then there's Lemarick Novel. Like his name, this guy is weird. And I grew to love him. We first meet him when Lilly and Jazzy go to Theatre Imaginique with the club they've newly joined, the Illustrious Minds Literary Society. Novel is one of the stage performers and everything about that carnival-esque show is a bit off, in a really wonderfully imaginative way - including him. Like Lily, Novel changes and grows throughout the novel and I really enjoyed seeing (and hoping for) changes in him.

The supporting characters hit the perfect balance - you know just enough about them for their interactions to matter, but they don't overwhelm the story with side-plots. I really enjoyed the two sides of Lily's life - the University world and the Theatre Imaginique world - and how well K C Finn was able to craft them.

The Story...

If I'm 100% honest, Book of Shade took me a while to get into and in the first bit I worried that I wasn't going to get into it. And as an American reader, it took me a little bit to get comfortable with the English lingo. But, that aside, I'm so glad I gave it a real chance. The world that Finn created is so wonderfully weird you can't help but adore it. There's a lot of mystery and there's just enough clues for you to take a stab at figuring things out, but you're never quite sure until the big reveals, which is exactly what I love I also really enjoyed the many relationships in Book of Shade - I'm not talking just romantic relationships, but parent-child and friend relationships that really enriched the story.

Since Finn has created a magical world with creatures that I've never seen - and the ones I have seen wonderfully remade - I can't even begin to guess what's coming next. The last 25% was pretty non-stop intensity for me and I will it ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger. Not the kind that leaves you desperate for the next move, but the kind where just enough has been resolved that you are content for now, but definitely want a bit more.

Concluding Sentiments...

I'm thrilled I had the opportunity to read Book of Shade and can't wait to get to know these characters and the wonderfully weird world a bit better. Don't let the slow-start trip you up, this is worth every minute!

I read this book in just over a day. I couldn't put it down.

I'm honestly at a loss for words because I loved the book so much that it's rendered me a bit speechless. I'm just going to come out and say it- THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ IN A VERY LONG TIME in this genre.

The book is magical in itself, sucking the reader into Lily Coltrane's life and the people she meets as she enters her first year in college (American here- but I guess I should call this Uni, if I'm going to be loyal to this beautiful book)

The author has created a unique set of characters, something entirely new to hit this genre. Lily and her roommate Jazzy are two young girls, who use Facebook, have cell phones, study, join extra circulars, drink beer, and notice cute boys. But, there is nothing stereotypical about these characters. They just are themselves, to the core- there is never a paragraph when you read something and question the characters motives and say, "Hey- that doesn't seem like the Lily I've gotten to know!" She molds the scene to her characters, she does not mold the characters to fit her scene. She does this perfectly.

I commend KC for her ability to embrace and not shy away from a lot of these modern things (like Facebook and Cell-Phones) that typically ruin a scene. (How can there be suspense when you can just pick up a cellphone and call someone? Right?) May authors tend to either of use technology in their stories or avoid it all together. But KC has used it with such ease and nonchalance that I have yet to see before.

Now, I have to comment on the illusionist, Novel. This character is by far my favorite from the story. From some of the first scenes (I really don't want to give any spoilers away becaues I want you to read this book!)- I was compelled to like him because of his dark humor and blunt personality. The more the reader gets to spend time with Novel, the more they too will love his complexity.

I cannot recommend this book to you anymore more. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. If you do not, you are doing yourself a serious disservice.

I cannot wait to read any sequels to get more of these characters This story, The Book of Shade- will remain a favorite of mine always.

The Book of Shade starts well as we get caught up on all that is Lily Coltrane. We meet her roomies and new social connections as well. It's one thing to survive first term but to survive the darkness surrounding the Theatre Imaginique will be another thing altogether.

It's a bit slow going in the beginning but I love the English vocab, I have read loads of books like that lately. It's worth all the explanation taken in the beginning.

I love Lily, very forward character made me feel like I knew her personally. The world created was well put together and each character was carefully constructed as well. The stories and warnings of the Theatre were alluring making me wonder what would happen next and how it would all play out. The intrigue alone would have drawn me to the theatre.

I always put alot on cast members in my reads and I like the cast in this book lots of variety.

Lily is ever evolving and her best friend Jazzy was uplifting. The Illustrious Minds were an interesting group of people and kept me interested.

The mystery and suspense elements are great. I like the uniqueness and the dark secretive elements as well. By the midpoint of the book I was reading as fast as I could, taking it all in bit by bit. I love the description of the theatre so much! I would love to someday see a place like that.

The hair raising moments were considerable here, I read in the dark and swore the shadows around me moved a time or two! LOL!

I don't think I had ever read a book that had an "illusionist" in it, that was great even if there was a dark secret behind it.

Getting to know Novel.

Well Novel is my favorite character in this book besides Lily. I like his quirky strange and weirdness and I love that he turns out to be more than I thought he would.

I really fell in love with this story and I wasn't sure if I would but K.C. Finn is a brilliant writer and I am looking forward to any upcoming installments and additions to The Book of Shade.

Mystery, intrigue and Paranormal activity all rolled up in an interesting package that you should not miss!

The Book of Shade is filled with elements common to most stories, the fight between good and evil, dark and light, humans and non humans and the romantic trope of soul mates, lovers destined by fate. It may sound like nothing new but the excellent storytelling gives it that wonderful twist that makes it engaging and captivating. Lily, a freshman at university in a small town of Piketon in England, may be far from her home but she aims to like it in her new school. Here she meets her roommate Jazzy whom she immediately gets along with. Determined to study hard, she never really expected to be joining the first club to recruit her. Not to mention to attend the Imaginique's monthly shows as part of it. Imaginique's old style big carnival tent show with seances, magic treats and feats that defy imaginations seems almost magical. Little did she know that this would be the start of her new life. This novel had great writing with good pacing and build up of tension. The gradual revelation regarding the Shades was done pretty well, it built the set up one block at a time so that it never tended to overwhelm the readers with too much detail all at once. The main characters of Lily Coltrane and Lemerick Novel appeared two dimensional initially but as the story progressed this served well for it was working up to revealing the mystery of their characters. The attraction between the two was obvious but wasn't pushed as immediate, for Lily's part anyway. There was growth there as well. Although the moments in the middle seemed to drag and the latter part of the story seemed anticlimactic overall this was a wonderful start to the series. There is no cliffhangers at the end but there were hints of further adventures for the rest of the characters.

"5-STAR MUST READ!!! LOVED IT & I'M HOOKED!!!!"

If you like urban fantasy or paranormal series (such as Jane True, Significance, Twilight, Darkfever, or Dead Witch Walking), you will LOVE the Book of Shade!!! Once I started reading, I was blown away! I could not put this book down!!!

The writing was excellent and the story kept me extremely captivated from the beginning thru the end. (And of course, the ending sets up the next book --- so I’m definitely left wanting and NEEDING more!) I cannot wait to read the next one!

The character development was absolutely fantastic! I loved all of the characters, both Shades and humans. My favorite human was Lily’s roommate Jazzy. She was lots of fun. I also really enjoyed Salem, Lemarik’s father. He was a great character! Oh, but Lemarik’s mother, I hated her from the moment she was introduced. (Of course, there always has to be an evil character whom we love to hate, right?!) And then there’s Baptiste. He’s an interesting character. I’m still wondering ‘what he is? I can’t WAIT to read the next book to find out!

Lemarik by far though, was my favorite character in the book. He didn’t give anything away in the beginning, as to what he was thinking and/or feeling. He was so mysterious, and I just didn’t know whether he was good or evil. I just wanted to get inside of his head!!!

It’s hard to find GOOD urban fantasy/paranormal out there and this is THE BEST I’ve read in a long time. This is a MUST READ book!!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! The Book of Shade is the first book in the Shadeborn Series and I cannot WAIT to read the next!! Great job KC Finn ---- LOVED IT!!!

Extracurricular activities can be dangerous.

This book is as mysterious and enigmatic as Lemarick Novel! I loved the imagery and the beautiful descriptions. This book really drew me in and gave off a bit of a creepy gothic vibe at times. I really enjoyed meeting all of the characters and figuring out exactly what was going on at the old theatre.

My favorite character was definitely Jazzy! She was so sweet and such a great friend. Her interactions with Lily were always so much fun. It is easy to see how she and Lily became fast friends.

Lily is a smart and studious young girl who was hoping for a unique social experience. She got that and much more! I really liked her character and her sense of humor. I also enjoyed seeing her trying to figure out what was going on with the theatre and the strange Lemarick Novel. Her interactions with him are also very interesting.

Lemarick Novel is by far the most interesting character in the book and very mysterious. I liked how the author gave you just enough information about him to keep you interested. Without giving everything away at the beginning.

For a fun mystery and some memorable characters check out "The Book of Shade".

This is my second by the author K.C Finn. And it is the first book in the Shadeborn series.

It is about love, friendship, magic, powers, YA romance and finding your own identity.

The protagonist is a girl named Lily who joined a new college in a farawaycity and met a new roommate cum best friend who is an Indian girl Jazzy. Lily went to a magical show with some friends and met a man named Novel who has some supernatural powers of getting electric current out of his hand. And from there the story starts how Lillydiscovered her identity and a lot more about shades.

Shadeborn is a story similar to that of vampires but they have their own way for everythingand have different enemies, friends and powers than vampires.

I really liked the plot of how Lilly's life changed drastically after meeting Novel. As the name suggests, the story is also about a book called the book of shades which is obviously for shades to learn new magical words and a lot about their own community. (The book plays an interestingrole in the story)

My 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 from the book was Jazzy, who really proved to be a true friend. There are a lot of other good and bad, yet strong characters in the book thatone will definitelyenjoy reading about.

I must say that the 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 because writing a fantasy book with a new vocabulary for everything is not an easy job to do and she managed it very well.

One thing I really like about K.C Finn's writing is that she always creates a𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

The book is written in the third person and has a lot of narration. And I really wanted a deep explanation of some scenes of the book. In addition to this, I wish it had more dialogues but I still enjoyed the book.

So, if you love fantasy books where characters discover about their new powers then you must check this book.

K.C. Finn's newest fantasy novel, The Book of Shade, releases on December 20th, and I would be surprised if she could't buy a new car with the dough this one rakes in. It is such a nerve-wracking ride, beautiful characters, and everything I've ever wanted in real life that I'll eat my hat if you don't enjoy it.

"Lily Coltrane’s to-do list for starting university life is pretty simple:
1. Make friends
2. Meet a cute guy
3. Survive her first year in Modern History
In the little English town of Piketon this seems more than achievable, so much so that Lily even joins The Illustrious Minds Literary Society, an extra-curricular club that promises a truly unique social experience. What Lily doesn’t bank on are the Society’s monthly visits to the mysterious Theatre Imaginique at the edge of town, a dark venue that houses the most obscure cavalcade of carnival performers she has ever laid eyes on..."

From the pages of the first chapter we're introduced to some of the main characters. And from the beginning, on page one of chapter one, I could tell that the characters were gonna be hilarious. Their backgrounds and their stories aren't made an issue until the character has to deal with them, which is great, since you aren't bombarded with troubling history to remember right away and you can deal with their issues the same time they do. You're introduced to this mysterious book club/society, which bring with it it's own cast of annoying characters (because come on, who else is going to join a club for the free perks? Douche bags, that's who).

As soon as this story takes off, you are introduced to the beautiful customs and ways of the 'shadeborn'. From how they mourn their dead, to how they relax in the evening, to how their lives revolve around the stars and their date of birth. It was so exciting for me to learn how much of a culture and how much of an institution the shadeborn had and were.

There's a great back-and-forth style banter between the characters, which I always love. I really enjoy sarcasm in characters, and authors who know how to use it. The characters are all so fascinating, and the social hierarchy they live by is really something I've never seen before.

Throughout this entire novel, not once was I bored. Even when there wasn't action, there was action. An interesting mix of curiosity and anxiety made it difficult for me to restrain myself from skipping to the end to learn what happened. And now that I have finished it, I'm tearing down Finn's door for the next bit of Lily and Novel's story.

What are the shadeborn?

You have to read the book to find out.

The Book of Shade is a non-stop thrill ride that will whisk you off your feet and plunge you into an unseen world of beauty and danger. To think that actors in a theater troupe could be more than then what they seem is mind-numbing and incredible, but that is exactly the case in this amazing story. I was thoroughly intrigued from the start, and the hold that it had on me was unshakable. What a wonderful surprise to be captured into this truly mysterious and beautiful world!

Lily is away from home for the first time while attending college. She is alone and unsure, but she finds true friendship and belonging with her roommate Jazzy. Pushing forward in the hopes of doing well at college, she works hard and does all she can to be a good student. However, distractions begin to crop up making life interesting for Lily. One of these distractions comes in the form of a member of a theater troupe whose name is Novel. He is unlike anyone she has ever met, and yet he seems to know who she is. Or at least that’s what he tells her.

The dynamic with Lily and Novel is so mystifying and fascinating with its unconventional approach. She isn’t sure what to think of him, and yet he fascinates her like no one else. Watching their walls slowly crumble as they open themselves up to each other is such a beautiful thing to watch. Novel does all he can to help Lily find out who she really is. The truth is even more surprising than she ever expected. The ultimate question is if Novel can help Lily to come to terms with everything that she discovers, or will she run from him and all that she is?

While I loved Novel and Lily, the other characters were just as remarkable. The rest of the theater troupe is truly a diverse and enigmatic group of individuals. You will find yourself marveling at each of them and what they can do. Even Lily’s friends will leave you wanting to know more about them. There is no end to the passion and originality of these stunning characters.

While the traditional families in this story Lilly and her mother; Novel and his parents - were dysfunctional at best, we find that true family can be found in people who simply love and care for each other. Family isn’t bound by blood; it’s bound by love and a feeling of belonging. This story highlights a most unlikely yet beautiful family that is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for each other if necessary. You can’t ask for anything more.

Having just finished reading this incredible book, I am still in awe of just how spectacular it really is! I have never read anything quite like it, and I can’t wait to read more of this new series from this insanely talented author. K. C. Finn has just rocked my world with her fantastic talent! She can consider me one her adoring fans at this point. I can’t wait to devour the next part of this enchanting story!

'The Book of Shade' is a brilliant, new novel with such a unique premise. Everything about this novel was perfect, I read it in one sitting. I fell in love with the characters, the setting, the magic, everything. This is an exciting, action-packed novel that will have you desperate for more!

This book tells the story of Lily who is in her first year of University, there she meets her new, chatty roommate, Jazzy. Both Lily and Jazzy join the first club they see at the fresher's fair and one of the perks of this club is free tickets to the 'Imaginique's' monthly show. There she meets Lemarick Novel, who appears to be an illusionist but when he tells her she is a shade her life is turned upside down as she is introduced to this new world with the support of Novel.

I absolutely loved Lily I thought she was such an awesome heroine. She had a great sense of humour but was a hard-worker and completely dedicated to learning the craft of the Shade, she was everything you would want in a perfect heroine. Novel was brilliant, right from the beginning he was such an interesting character and he was one of those people who had an air of mystery surrounding him but not to the extent that you couldn't connect to him. The other members of Imaginique were so brilliant to read about and I felt the community and family spirit that came across between them. My two favourite secondary characters were Jazzy and Novel's dad, Salem. Jazzy was just so sweet and such a dedicated best friend. Salem was a complex character who you couldn't help but just love.

Lily and Novel's relationship wasn't obvious from the beginning at all, which I absolutely love, as their feeling started slowly developing, so did our realisation and I loved how slow and steady their relationship was.

All in all, it was such an incredible book, the ending was a bit frustrating, in a good way of course, I just hope and pray there is going to be a sequel!

*Thanks to the author who sent me a free copy in exchange for a review*

Books & Sweet Epiphany

Reading the synopsis of the story had my heart pumping in anticipation and guess what?
It really got my heart pumping!

At first, it started out in a really nice and comfortable pace. Lily met her new roommate and seems to be fascinated with her.

However, as the story progresses, I can't help but think that The Book of Shade is almost a tinny-bit similar to The Cirque du Freak book....and I HAVE SINNED.

It was absolutely awesome.

Expect what any normal college student would do in a new semester, studying really hard, finishing assignments and then suddenly knowing that you have powers. You freak out even more when the so-called magician of Theatre Imaginique keeps staring at you in between acts and try to scare you.
He looks prematurely old but he's actually young. Well, not really.

The one thing that I love the most in this book is the attraction between Lily and Novel.
I mean, he doesn't even smile and Lily made it her mission to see him smile even if its only once.
Its not like those usual book where the girl will fall in love with the guy and vice versa.

There are no heart stuttering, breathless moments or falling in love at first side in this story.

There is only a moment of clarity of how perfect his imperfection was to her, the lengths that he'll go to protect her and then "The Kiss" happens.

This book is just awesome.

Be prepared to be surprised, have fun in figuring out the fantastic posters of Theatre Imaginique, cringe in anticipation of the suspense and fall in love with The Book of Shade.

K.C. Finn is AWESOME. Definitely on my favorite authors list.

Sincerely,
Selina.

Lily Coltrane is starting off her first year at Piketon University. As with all freshmen students, she only wants to fit in, make friends and survive. Things starts well as she becomes fast friends with roommate Jazzy, seems to be doing well in her class plus there's that cute boy in the club she joined.

Being a member of The Illustrious Minds Literary Society, she's invited to a performance in Theatre Imaginique - a once a month show that showcases several enigmatic performers each with captivating performances that plays with your imagination, making everything seem like magic.

One of the performers is Lemarick Novel - illusionist and proprietor of Theatre Imaginique. As Lily meets his pale blue eyes - little did she know that this meeting is about to change her life.

It has been quite awhile since I've read anything from this genre, but I'm glad it was this book because it is a brilliant story. The writing was very good - the descriptions, the dialogue, was captivating and engaging.

The world that K.C. Finn built for this story was amazing. It was familiar, yet unique. The characters that she has also made for this world were wonderful: our heroine Lily, enigmatic Lemarick, sweet Jazzy and the different performers of Theatre Imaginique. It wasn't very hard to love them.

The Book of Shade is definitely a wonderful read. Mystery, fantasy, paranormal all in one package - fans of said genres must check this book out. I am certainly picking up the next book of this series and be swept again in this wonderful world.

Book Of Shade...
Let me start by thanking the author, K C Finn for providing me with an ARC in exchange fr my honest review.
What is a Shade? A Shade is a being that resembles humans, looks human, acts human & in fact is a human with extraordinary powers, that out lives us by hundreds of years and has powers we can only dream of having. Imagine living several hundreds of years and still looking young!
It took me a while to get into this book as it is out of my comfort genre, but I did enjoy it just the same!
Lily Coltrane is a young girl going off to college and believing her only worries are making it thru World History. Little does she know who or what she really is. She starts school and joins a unique book club. This club gets monthly trips to a very old theater. One day she goes to the theater and meets a man called Novel. Novel appears to be doing magic tricks that Lily can't figure out. Novel is a Shade himself and has to convince Lily she is also a Shade.
To make a long story short, without spoiling the story, Lily has a long road ahead of her and Novel has many things to teach her about herself. This book has many twists and turns. The author has a knack for story-telling & a great imagination! I feel this is a great read for young & old alike.

Disclaimer: I received a free ebook in exchange for an honest review. But really, I jumped at the opportunity to read more of KC Finn for free after enjoying The Secret Star so much.

Though I may still have a preference for the time travel story (The Secret Star), Finn did not let me down with her diverse range of characters and engaging story. Lily and Jazzy's friendship was great to read; Novel was an interesting character with a lot of depth, and I always enjoyed learning more about him and Shades in general. Finn really created such a full world by exploring all the types of Shades, from Mother Novel to Salem to Ugarte to Maxime.

And after the Epilogue, I'm begging for a sequel. I really want to know more about Jazzy's story from here on.

There were a couple of things that I suspected might happen that did, but overall there were enough unpredictable moments to make me satisfied. I really enjoyed this story and learning about the world of Shades.

I believe the next big thing has arrived. Is paranormal romance your thing? Looking for one that will suck you in, blow your mind and take you down a totally new magical path? K.C. Finn has created the most devilishly wonderful cast of characters and given them classic dark English setting to play around in. Lily Coltrane leaves her distant relationship with her mother behind her when she ventures off to college. While mingling and getting to know the campus she stumbles upon a group of students who introduce her to the theater Imaginique, a dark troupe of performers with a sinister reputation. Lily is reluctant to go, but after only one performance, Lily realizes she may have something in common with those who grace the stage. Lily's life is about to change, her strained relationship with her mother may stem from more than teenage angst and Lily may not survive her first year of university. Get this book. Get it right now. It is the next great series!!

The book is about a girl who finds out she has the ability to manipulate the elements and follow through with the help of the mysteries Novel. To find our more, read the book!

First off I would like to thank the author (K.C Finn) for providing me with an ARC of this amazing book!

I give this book a 4/5.
This book started off kind of confusing. Events happened but weren't thoroughly explained. And we didn't really get to understand Lily's feelings. She seemed eh about everything. At the part where she finds out she's not human (and will be around for.. well quite a while) I would expected her to emotionally break down or something but instead she was just like..oh well that explains a lot!

Lily's character really grew in the book, she went from not caring about anything to noticing small details, analyzing people around her, and the way she talked also slightly changed.
The plot was intriguing, suspenseful,action-packed, and just spectacular! We get to explore these new beings called "shades" rather than just the cliche vampires and werewolves (although I love a good vampire story). This definitely bought a bigger question as to what her powers were, and 'the book of shade' itself was so interesting to read about!
I loved her best friend Jazzy (as I mentioned on Instagram and GoodReads) But seriously she was so brave, understanding ,and well funny!Lets be honest she was shipping Nolan/Lily from the beginning! (Lolan,Nily? what would their ship be???)
In the beginning the love interest wasn't clear like in some books, and I honestly didn't like Nolan's character at first. But just like Lily, his character grew tremendously! By the end of the book I was just like *swoon*.

The ending was just "The End'. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE END? I'm really curious as to if there will be a second book.. cause I WANT ANSWERS!Unanswered questions are literally surrounding me right now!

Anyways this book was a fantastic thriller read! I would definitely recommend it!

“Hurry, Hurry! Step right up! Grab your ereaders and join me in reading the delightfully unique story known as Book of Shade by K.C. Finn. An imaginative tale of wonder told through the eyes of first year University student, Lily Coltrane.

Journey with Lily as she makes new friends and finds her way around the small English town of Piketon. You won’t believe your eyes as you attend the Theatre Imaginique and meet the strange and magical cast of dark and mysterious performers. Can you resist the temptations that the mysterious offers? What if, like Lily, you discover that you are more than what you have been told?

Book of Shade is a fantastic paranormal urban fantasy that features all manners of creatures that go bump in the night. I loved everything about this book. It offers vivid descriptions, fantastically characters, twisting story lines, and the age-old battle of good versus evil. There is betrayal, sacrifice, prejudices, and acceptance as Lily makes new friends, falls in love, and comes to terms with who and what she really is.

The ending is open but resolved. You definitely get the idea that there will be a book 2 and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next.

Summary: Unique Paranormal Urban Fantasy with vivid descriptions, amazing characters, and a fantastic storyline. Highly recommend.

Lily nodded. The elegant man gave her a wide smile.

First off I want to thank the author for providing me with an ARC Copy of this book to read and review for this tour :)

This will be my first book to of read by this author, and I always get nervous when reading new material :)

WELL...... I don't know why I enjoyed this book.

For some reason it took me a while to get into, but I think this was me, as whilst reading I wasn't well and was under the influence of drugs to recover from a virus and secondly I was under stress from work, so I think it was me that couldn't get into it straight away, but I soon did pick it up... and oh boy, I couldn't put it down!

Novel AKA Lemarick....yeah my first impression was creepy older guy eyeing up his prey, but as the story developed I loved this guy!

Yes, he's old fashioned

Yes, he needs to loosen up a bit (crack a smile in a while )

But he is a new babe for me :)

Your constantly on edge whilst reading this, you can never guess what's going to happen, because the minute you do....BAM K C changes the WHOLE dynamic of things!

I loved Jazzy, she's such a quirky character and I do hope we see more of her

Jeni.....Oh how I love you !

She's such a free, kindred spirit (Hahah no pun intended for those who have already read it)

But don't let the innocent young women fool you, she has a temper and isn't one to back down.

This is full of magic, lust, family secrets, new beginning, and lost of twists and turns :)

Can't wait for the next :) Bring It On!

Lily Coltrane is attending her first year at a university in Piketon, England. She joins an extra-curricular club called The Illustrious Minds Literary Society. The club attends a monthly showing of strange carnival-like performances at the Theatre Imaginique. Lily is intrigued by the proprietor, Lemarick Novel, who is an illusionist that seems to be able to manipulate the elements. With the help of the Book of Shade, Lily will discover how Novel accomplishes his feats.

This is one of those stories that definitely gets better the more you read it. Once you get into the part of the tale that discusses the Shades the novel gets hard to put down.

I really enjoyed the interaction between Lily and Novel. Their emotions are all over the board which makes the story interesting.

K. C. Finn created an imaginative fantasy realm that is action pact and captivating. There are interesting twists and a lot of mystery. I really enjoyed The Book of Shade. It seemed enlivening and diverse from the books I typically read.

You know how they say to never judge a book by its cover, well I am that person (sorry).

I was actually very surprised how quickly this book sucked me in. I was afraid that it would take me a while to get into it but I was SO wrong about that. I was hooked within the first chapter and I read the whole thing in a day!

I have read quite a few Paranormal books and this one was so different. This had other characters of the Urban myths (vampires and werewolf's) tied into it but the way The way K.C. Finn stayed away from the typical story line in theses types of books was wonderful!

It really enjoyed getting to know Lilly, Jazzy and Novel. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because I would have like to have seen a bit more smut and chemistry between Lilly and Novel. That being said I am definitely looking forward to K.C Finn writing the next book in this series!

I received an Advanced Review Copy of this book in exchange for a review.

I am so excited to be the first person to review K.C. Finn's new novel here on ŷ! This is a totally brilliant book that is completely different to anything else she's written. I have never read a book so quickly as I couldn't put it down!

I really fell in love with Lemarick Novel (and then with Salem too later in the plot) - such charismatic men in this book! There were so many twists and turns that there was also NO WAY that I could second-guess what was going to happen next. I always looked forward to the descriptions of the nights at the Theatre Imaginique and enjoyed the performances as though I was a member of the audience!

The end of this book has also left me thirsting for the sequel!

I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

This started slowly, but by the end I was fully engaged with the very interesting magical concept and the likeable characters. The characters took some time to grow on me, particularly Lily, who, at first, seemed younger than her supposedly university age and somewhat unformed. But she developed as the book did, and I liked the way the central relationship was unforced and a little unpredictable. I also liked Lily's friend Jazzy and the other denizens of the Theatre Imaginique. There is a somewhat unfinished feel to this - lots of unanswered questions, and intriguing dead-ends, but certainly enough to fuel my interest in the next book in the series.

I received an ARC copy of this book to provide an honest review.

First off I must say that paranormal books aren't normally something that I read any more, but was pleasantly surprised by this one!

Initially I found it hard to get into but I suppose that's what happens when your trying to do 100 things at once, but once I got started I couldn't put it down! The characters were really well thought out and I especially loved the friendship between jazzy and Lily! The story flowed really well and has definitely left the door open for the next one! I will be keeping my eyes open for that! Will def have a look at the authors other books after this!

Having loved 'The Night Circus' I thought this book sounded interesting so I requested it from Netgallery. I wasn't mistaken. The character of Lily was very engaging. I liked that she didn't go 'ga-ga' at the appearance of any good looking male- a failing most teenage heroines seem to suffer from! The members of the Theatre Imaginique are intriguing and I was soon swept away with the story. I will be downloading the next installment soon, as I want to know what happens next- which has to be the best recommendation you can give! Thanks to Netgallery for giving me the opportunity to discover this great read.
