Twenty-eight days, thirteen European countries, a tour manager fighting attraction, and an accused murderer. What could possibly go wrong? European tour manger Stella Cruz has adeptly led eager tourists around Europe for far too long. Nearly thirty, she is ready to abandon a constantly changing clientele and the never-ending stream of willing bed partners. Enter Phoebe Lancaster, tall, blond, and dangerous. Arrested for the murder of her socialite girlfriend, but later released, Phoebe’s presence on the tour is an unnerving mystery and a reckless temptation for Stella.
Michelle is Tasmanian born and now resides in the UK, just north of London, with her wife. She's a fair weather golfer, a happy snapper, and a lover of cafes, vinyl records, and book shops.
Michelle harbours an unnatural love for stray pieces of timber (she promises her wife she'll build her something one day), second hand furniture shops, and the perfect coffee.
She can play six chords on her guitar, stumble through a song on her drum kit, and if you see her wearing headphones, she's probably listening to Mumford and Sons while dreaming up stories and plot twists.
It goes without saying that writing is Michelle's favourite thing to do.
This book was just OK to me. I thought I would really like it because when I was younger, I went on a Contiki tour all over Australia. It was one of the best times of my life, so I was excited about this books setting. Unfortunately, I was not crazy about the characters. I found the main character Stella to be annoying at times. I also did not buy that she was in love at first glance with an accused murderer. And I hated the secondary character of Russo. His story-line included a threesome with incest, than later a man that Russo refused to kiss but let the man perform oral sex on him. Russo was a walking STD creep.
The main character romance was OK, but like I said, I didn't buy the instant attraction. Also, Phoebe (the other main) had big issues to deal with, which made about half the sex scenes awkward and not so sexy. There was an attempted rape that happened to a main character. I know some people don't like to read books with rape in it. I sure don't. This scene was enough to make my stomach turn, but like I said it was attempted. I just wanted to make readers aware. What bothered me more was when the book is all wrapped up, at the end, the attempted rape is discussed, but there's no real reason why it's in the book. If you read the book you will understand more what I mean. I don't want to get too spoiler-ish.
I just gave this book a lot of negatives, but besides the above, the author really is a good writer. It's her first book and I believe she will only get better. Her writing was good enough that I would read her future books.
i think this was a three or a four. I can't remember it and lost my records with my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ snafu. This is not a review. I am just reminding myself I've read it.
This is more like a strong three stars, but given that it's the author's debut work, I think it's a worthwhile effort though you shouldn't expect plausibility here. If you have not read any of this author's works, Keep Hold might be a better place to start than this book, which does drag a little at times.
I didn't warm to this book. The story is well plotted, the ending is exciting and, although unexpected, suits the rest of the narrative, the characters are well developed and the setting in all the different countries is well presented. But... I think the lead characters just didn't appeal to me. I found Stella irritating and wanted to tell her several times to get over herself. For a Tour Guide with many years experience she sometimes acted in a very juvenile and sulky way - and although that may have been appropriate for the way the story was unfolding, it just didn't sit right with me. I wanted her to be "take charge" and in control a bit more. And Phoebe was a similar issue. Would someone who had been cleared of murder five years ago in Australia still be on the radar at French customs? And although at the end you discover why Phoebe carries so much guilt, the unravelling didn't feel real to me. I liked Russo and found him the most credible of the characters although even he did something I wasn't convinced he would do... Like I know what he would do! But I won't spoil things by saying any more.
I might try another book by Ms Grubb because there is definite skill here in the story telling but this particular book didn't appeal to me.
This book takes off, straight away! I have never travelled overseas and this makes me slightly regret this, and want to change it! I found it so easy to go on tour with this crowd. Can't wait for another release.
From the moment I started reading I felt like I was back on a Contiki bus touring Europe, it was wonderful to get a perspective from a tour managers POV. Loved the main characters & really had trouble putting this book down, wonderful debut novel! I'll keep my eye our for Michelle's next book!
I enjoyed this book. It was Refreshing and the characters and locations were interesting. It was nice to read a book set in Europe. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to more from this author.
Couldn't put this down. I enjoyed the pace and twists and the sex was very well written. I loved the journey around Europe and got a real feel of the different countries visited as well as the romance and intrigue. A bit of everything for everyone.
Loved this book. Makes me want to go on Contiki again!! Great suspense also, especially near the end. Thoroughly recommend. Just waiting for her next book to come out now!!
