“He laughs and takes hold of my free hand. I love the easy, casual way he does that, as if we’ve been holding hands forever. It feels natural to me, like my hand belongs wrapped in his.
“The more time I spend with her, the more I want her. I want her to be mine. It doesn’t matter that I might not be good for her. I can be someone different for her. I’ll be anyone she needs me to be if it means I get to have her in my life.
He leans in so he’s nose to nose with Fluff. “Get used to me. I’m not going away.
She replies by showing the ten teeth she has left and growling again.
He gathers me in even closer to him, his arms tight around me, and all I feel is loved and protected. “We’re going to figure this out together. One day at a time, one step at a time. Whatever you need, whenever you need it. I’m in this so deep, Nat."
“I’m sorry. That was rude. You weren’t asking me to go to bed with you.
“No, I wasn’t. I smile at her flustered state. “Not yet, anyway. I thought we could begin with dinner and go from there.
“As long as ‘going from there doesn’t involve a bedroom, I’d consider having dinner with you.
I’m far more relieved than I should be to know I’ll get to see her again. “I promise there’ll be no mention of bedrooms.
“Or sofas or backseats or any other horizontal surfaces.
“You forgot walls, stairwells and shower stalls. I do some of my best work vertically.
“I hope someday you and I will have a lot of sex. I hope someday you and I will start and end each day wrapped in each other’s arms. I hope maybe someday, you’ll be able to do whatever you want with me any time you want to do it and know that you’ll always be welcome and safe in my arms, in my bed, in my life. And because I know when all that happens it’ll be extraordinary, to say the least, I’m willing to wait. For as long as it takes, I’ll wait. I’ll wait for you.
“We’re going to figure this out together. One day at a time, one step at a time. Whatever you need, whenever you need it. I’m in this so deep, Nat Please don’t leave me. Don’t walk away. Give me a chance. Give yourself a chance. If anyone deserves to be happy and loved, it’s you.
"From the first second you looked up at me the other day, with your crazy dog attacking me, I knew. I just knew it's you. You're the one my dad told me I'd find. That's why I ran after you when I had something else I was supposed to be doing. It's why I wanted to see you again Saturday night. I've wanted to see you every day since and every day from now on. It's you Natalie. So whatever it is that's got you so upset, I want to fix it. I want to make it right."
‘Someday, probably years from now, a woman will come strolling into the room, and all the oxygen will seem to leave with her arrival. Your chest will be tight, your heart will beat a little faster, and you’ll know. You’ll just know.
“I feel like Cinderella at the ball, and any second the clock is going to strike midnight, and the handsome prince will disappear in a wisp of smoke, never to be seen or heard from again.
