The book is listed on Amazon as well as Smashwords in the African American Science Fiction Genre. It is also included in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture catalogue. The Bennu Project is a genre-defying read with the suspense of a mystery novel, the mataphors of a science fiction story, and a prevalent theme of historical relevance throughout. Received favorably by both male and female readers from their twenties to their seventies, the novel captures the essence of works by Chancellor Williams and Cheikh Anta Diop. Readers will enjoy the historical accuracy presented as well as the entertaining science fiction narrative. Told as a metaphor for the rise and fall of several Nile valley civilizations, readers will enjoy a science fiction metaphor which presents factual information in a fun and exciting narrative. This is a favorite among home school educators.
Young Azubuike is a survivor. Countless generations have passed since the fracture, and subsequent collapse, of the Meroan Republic. Yet remnants of their culture and technology continue to persist on various worlds that have been conquered by their enemies. Subjugated and oppressed, the descendants of this once great republic know they must change the direction of their fate or face extinction. On a dangerous run to scavenge supplies from a remote excavation site located in an isolated section of the Meza ruins, Azubuike and his friends encounter a unique piece of technology left behind by their ancestors. Once exposed to it, the device begins to alter Azubuike’s reality in ways that could, ultimately, unravel his mind. There is no way for the group to know the danger, or benefit, posed by this ancient technology even though it has already set in motion a series of events that will forever change the lives of Azubuike and his friends. Has he just unlocked the secret to ending the alien occupation of his world? Or will it bring about the final destruction of his people?
love love loved the book!! (Warning: MAJOR spoilers ahead) I read it very quickly as it had so many intriguing and intense parts that everytime I thought about putting it down, I couldn't because I HAD to know what was going to happen next. The characters are very relatable and easy to become attached to. The Kandake is truly an inspirational character, not only as a leader for an entire race of people but also as a model of a strong, fearless woman. Her strength, leadership, and calm in the face of war and adversity are qualities that one can only hope to aspire to develop. Azubuike's courage, pride, and determination to protect his people while honoring his ancestors is a continuous and much needed message sent. His willingness to repeatedly put his life on the line for his people is a quality that is honorable not only to the ancestors & Roha, but serves as a platform of pride and builds the self-confidence of the nation. He stands as a symbol of hope and to keep your heart pounding throughout the novel.Seba's intelligence is unparalled and ALWAYS necessary! Thank goodness for Ayoka frequently saving his life. Wynch is a perfectly developed and written bad guy, always popping up, never giving up on his goal to catch and break Azubuike. Nosizwe, my favorite character (whom I would love to cast my voice as in a CGI film, if one is ever produced), is another strong female character. Besides the fact that she is the lead Dr. of the people which speaks to her intelligence, she is also a very caring and genuine character. She understands not only the needs of her patients but also the needs of the war. Although Seba is not fully recovered, she allows him to help Azubuike with the ship. Her adoption as the Kandake's daughter makes her next in line as leader of the people, I would definitely like a sequel that may include her as the new Kandake with Azubuike by her side as her husband. Her bold, direct, inspirational, and perfectly timed, legendary proposal to Azubuike is HANDS DOWN my favorite part of the book. The whole story is unlike any of your usual predictable plot lines, but instead, is full of twists/action/honor/heroism etc. The message the book sends is one of freedom, pride, and courage; all things necessary to build up a nation and sustation its people and culture! I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed the book, and i apologize for my novel of a comment! I could keep going but I think that is enough for now! :)
On the surface, “The Bennu Project is a futuristic, fantasy sci-fi book. It is full of action, suspense and futuristic weaponry. The book has you on he edge of your seat with each turn of the page. You spend your time rooting for the underdog and lead character Azubuike and his quest to defend himself and his family against the evil Ezalins and their leader Major Wynch. Tyrone Givens paints a vivid picture of the impact of colonization and how history can be re-written to reflect the ideals of the ruling classes. He is able to weave the past, present and future to give the reader a look at how a man is like a child when he does not know or understand his story or his “history. It was a pleasure watching the characters grow in mental and physical strength as their identity and purpose was revealed to them. This is book is like an onion with multiple layers. A great read for young and old.
This is my second read of this book & it was better then the first. This book made me smile, cry, get upset, rejoice, etc. The lead is a young man that spirit is in us all that want justice & freedom. I recommend this book to everyone over the age of 13 that can read. Without spoiling it for you this book is a must have.
