Leigh Sterling and Jodie Whitehouse share a deep love and extreme passion in the bedroom. But when Jodie’s desire for a child becomes inevitable, it clashes with Leigh’s career ambitions as well as with her lack of maternal instinct, and forces them apart.

They go through life separately and, as years go by, their attempts at other relationships fail to measure up to the power of the union they once shared. When they see each other again eleven years after their painful breakup, an opportunity arises to explore if they really were each other’s one true love.

Oh wow ! Emotional roller coaster! U move from being sad, to being angry, to getting emotional, to feeling somehow sexy :) , to going back to happy then sad then frustrated! The characters are very likeable, the story is very believable, and the connection they have is unbelievable! This was definitely a kick ass read! The only thing that I would've loved to see is some connections outside their bed :)

This story was actually very well done, it was mature and thoughtful. It showed the deep growth of two people who broke up after 6 life altering years together, and spend the majority of the book apart trying to find their way back. I found their journeys quite compelling and the author did a very good job making me feel their heartache and emptiness. Though I didn't really like either MCs, I did find the reason for their breakup believable, and the author did a good job really letting us into each of their experiences revolving around motherhood, relationships, careers. It truly was an emotional read.

However, I struggled with the dominant/submissive content in this one. It went too beyond my comfort zone I suppose. Though it's not my thing, I do have a respect for it in softer doses, and this went to a level that didn't sit well with me, personally. Their sex life seemed to overrule any other connections the ladies had with one another, and I would have liked for the author to delve more into other aspects of their strong pull to one another, if it exists.

This is my first book from the author and it shows. While I know the author does erotic romances, I wasn't really sure what to expect. It's not obvious from the blurb but the main relationship in the book (Leigh/Jodie) is surprisingly, one of dominant/submissive. And not just the tame variety either. Neither is it just there for the titillation. Their attraction, or more aptly, their addiction to that aspect of their relationship forms the basis for the entire premise of the book.

After six years in a highly sexual D/s relationship, Leigh, a hotshot lawyer in the DA's office and Jodie, a divorced social worker with a young son, have hit a massive roadblock in their relationship: Jodie wants a second child but Leigh can't imagine herself mothering one from scratch (she doesn't mind the older one), not to mention that it's bound to get in the way of her career. The two find their differences irreconcilable and walk away from the relationship. Eleven years and many partners and life and career milestones later, the two have a chance to make things right. But are they still the same two people who broke up years before?

The book uses alternating first person POVs, which is perfect for really getting into the mind and soul of both characters, something the book achieves with surprising depth and nuance, whether by erotica or romance standards. The story starts with the main couple breaking up, and liberally uses flashbacks throughout as our main characters remember the good, the bad, and the sexiest (read:kinkiest for the rest of us,lol) times of their lives.

The non-linear structure of the book adds an element of angst, as we know at the start of every major change in their lives that things don't work out. For me, It makes for a more memorable, but less enjoyable read. The entire structure of the timeline, flashbacks and alternating POVs flows so well that it's effortless to read and keep track of. At the same time, always knowing that another couple is breaking up...yet again, makes it a rather depressing read. Especially since the breakups run up to well over 2/3 of the book. Of course, there were some spicy interludes to feast on, but I had to keep reminding myself that the best is yet to come.

Positives:
- I've never read a BDSM or erotica title (and even few lesbian romances) with such nuance and insight into the main characters. At first, I thought their 'irreconciliable differences' were petty, selfish and immature. This contributed a good deal to why I didn't like the book at first. But as the characters were slowly fleshed out, their motives, ambitions, and their deepest wants and needs are explored while they led separate lives, I understood and I accepted them.

- I also found myself highlighting many passages, something I don't normally do. Some of these are memorable turn of phrases or some bit of unforgettable prose. (e.g. "I'm ready to fuck the Suzy out of her..." (Suzy is the ex)) Others are these little things the characters say or do or feel, which, within the context of whatever situation came up, I thought, 'wow, this is really deep'. (e.g. "Was she..."--Jodie turns around, curling her fingers around the edge of the window sill--"kinky like me?")

- The D/s relationship here was particularly well illustrated in both the physical and emotional aspects. I was able to get into the characters' headspace and find their 'addiction' or 'connection' believable.

Negatives:
Too much of the book was devoted to breaking-up, in all their different ways, resulting in a depressing (not angsty) tone throughout the first 2/3's of the book. Also, this is just me, of course, but I'm such a wimp when it comes to pain. I just can't mix pleasure with pain. It doesn't compute in my brain. And there's plenty of that in the book. (Note: Actually, there are just 2 really detailed scenes, but the others are mentioned/implied.) So I just find myself gritting my teeth and wincing through those parts. I know, I know I should have skipped them, but they're key to understanding the sub experience (tongue firmly in cheek) and I need to know exactly why a perfectly normal, well-adjusted, even assertive person like Jodie craves these grossly uncomfortable (a gigantic understatement, imho...how does she even sit down for lunch the next day????) experiences. I won't pretend I will ever get this part of the S/M, no matter how good this book is at selling it to me.

Well written but frustrating read. The whole 11 years apart seemed to really drag the story down given the massively quick conclusion. Although I did end up speed reading the last 2 chapters.

Just wanted to shout at Leigh to pull her head out of her arse. The kink was appropriately kinky, but I have to admit felt almost misplaced. Never really connected with either of the main characters.

She did it again!

It's seldom that I read a book by and am not blown away and this one is no different.

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster that will leave you absolutely breathless, either because the sex scenes will make you gasp for breath or the heartbreaking scenes will have you sobbing uncontrollably.

I love how flawed these characters are, it only makes them more believable to me. If you're looking for something full of angst and super sexy, this is the book for you!

I'm surprised that Harper and I don't have a better relationship. While I do love a heartfelt romance with tons of feels I also appreciate authors who can write great sex. I think Harper has proven she can do that lol. I suppose my biggest issue with her is she usually writes short stories and I really prefer novels.

But, alas, here we are with her 2nd novel. I was drawn in with the promise of kink and that is definitely here. So if kink is not your thing I would suggest staying away.

The novel is also full of angst. That is always a plus right? Not something we enjoy in real life, but if I can read about two hot women suffering and longing for each other then sign me up! This novel begin with Leigh and Jodie breaking up. They are perfect for each other, but one issue drives them apart. Jodie wants a baby and Leigh does not.

So they break up and go their separate ways for eleven years. Most of the novel tells the story of their lives during the eleven year separation. There are plenty of flashbacks (mostly sexual ones) that show us glimpses of the life that these two women led together before the break.

The novel was 70% through by the time they are reunited. I felt the reunion was a little too...easy? After so much heartache and wasted years I was just a tad surprised how they simply fell into each other's arms again.

The sex was great. Kinky and a bit rough. Definitely no issues there! I also thought the secondary characters seemed alive with personalities. I think I wish there had been a bit more of the kids. They needed more lines.

I'm also not a big fan of 1st person storytelling, but it kinda worked here. The POV switched between the two leads every other chapter.

Anyways its a good book, quick and easy read. I hope that Harper sticks with novels. 4.25/5

I loved everything with Leigh and Jodie. The scenes where they had other partners didn't do a whole lot for me and I kind of wanted to skim to every scene with just the two of them. I also would have liked to see Leigh interacting with Rosie. Still good and the sex is great (unsurprising, since it's Harper Bliss). It's nice to read about kink that's not in an impossibly ridiculous club.

Interesting, very interesting book. I would gladly give 5 stars if not for the (for me) unnecessarily detailed scenes with other partners during the eleven year separation. All in all, a good mix of romance, angst and kinky sex.

As always when picking up a book by Harper Bliss I know it’s going to be beautifully written and evoke many emotions in me. ‘Once in a Lifetime didn’t disappoint in that aspect. However, just because I love her writing doesn’t mean I’m going to love every plotline or character.

This story is told in first person, present and past tense, and from both Leigh and Jodie’s point of views. Leigh is an awesome character; she was upfront from the get-go. Jodie had her head buried in the sand certain, given time, Leigh would warm to the idea of them having a child together. Which I got as Leigh was fantastic with Jodie’s son, but when that doesn't happen the two part ways.

A great deal of the plot follows the main characters separate lives and attempts to move on, yet never again meeting ‘the one.

I love that Harpers book don’t rely on miscommunication to drive the plots, the anguish these women faced was realistic to me. What I didn’t get, or should I say who I didn’t get was Jodie.

For me, Jodie was incredibly lucky to have a child, something some women who desperately want a child will never experience. To throw away the love of her life, again something many people struggle to find, to have another child evoked many emotions in me, most of them negative.

Her children are very much backstory, one could argue it wasn’t their story, but I disagree! Her drive to have a child ended a six-year relationship, to me that screams a woman who is so maternal she’s gonna be doing everything she can for her kids, school runs, etc. But that wasn’t to be.

Besides the lack of any maternal ‘feels I got from Jodie, what really cinched the deal was when her and Leigh eventually got back together and she shipped Rosie off to a sitter so Leigh wouldn’t have to deal with the child right away. My mind kept screaming you selfish, self-centered woman. Put your knickers on, see if your ex is okay with the kid, then celebrate! But nope, two days of makeup sex then deal with the kid!

My issues aside, the fact the story had me screaming at these women like they were real people, is a true indication of character building. I loved the part Jodie’s son played in the lady’s reconnection. Oh, and Meredith was an awesome side character.

I recommend this story to readers who enjoy well fleshed out characters, and plots driven by real life issues more so than by convoluted BS, and/or miscommunication.

Refreshing arrangement. Normally novels start with describing how much the couple love each other before the heartbreak came, this book started with Leigh and Jodie's heartbreaking moment in ending their six years relationship. The superb writing and all the small details from the coffee mug that Jodie is gripping tight with her hands, to the one last hug they share absolutely tears at your heart. The alternated POV in my opinion worked great particularly in carving out the feelings in alternate perspectives.

The chemistry between Leigh and Jodie is absolutely sizzling. There is quite a bit of kink in the sex scenes and I'm definitely not complaining lol! Especially love the last one where Leigh shows her vulnerability and surrenders to Jodie.

Eleven years is indeed a long time, and I can't agree more that things happen for a reason and only from hindsight you'll appreciate why it had to happen. When Leigh told Jodie she didn't change and life did, it just spoke volumes to their years apart and how much that altered their views on family, love and career fundamentally. For anyone who has gone through a similar kind of heartache, this book will strike a resonance. It feels so real in many aspects.

All in all a great book if you want something a bit more blue but not overly depressing. I'm hoping the author will write more full length novels, and I'm definitely looking forward for the next book.

In contrast to the original release, the Deluxe Edition consist of the original novel together with 3 second chance short stories.

Once in a Lifetime
For me this book was a total roller coaster of feelings. The books starts with the breakup - which is of course necessary for a second chance. But I normally hate too much drama in my reads and here I have it all in the very beginning: Separation, tears about a lost love, trying more or less unsuccessful to cope with the new situation intertwined with flashbacks to a happy time together.

The chronology makes sense - but it was still a bit too much for me right in the beginning.

After two chapters I had to skip to the second chance part to gather enough emotional cushioning to read the first half of the book.

Harper writes in an alternating first person view which I liked much more than the typical first person view.

The novel features some light BDSM. But all the sex scenes are very erotic and can be enjoyed even for someone not into kink.

I Still Remember
Two teenage besties meet again after several years in a massage studio as customer and owner.
I will never be able to get a massage again without thinking about what happened in this studio.

No Greater Love than Mine
This one is very special to me as both women are already in their late fifties. Harper Bliss has a way with age gap and older leads, and this (much too short) story proves it again.

Reading it taught me two things: You have to let go of the past, to be open for new possibilities. And you are never to old to find your soulmate (again) - well, at least if Harper has a saying in our destiny.
Once more written in alternating first person view (I'm beginning to really love that).

Lovely Rita
This is a erotic short story. So no deeper meaning besides to enjoy it, and maybe to be more open to some possibilities which are not exactly in our comfort zone.

Really Touching

Ms Bliss has such a way with her stories. I've not read one like this before. Jodie and Leigh have been madly in love and a couple for six years. Together they took part in raising Jodie's son. Jodie has always made it clear she wanted another child and now that time is running out (Bio clock) it needs to be now. Leigh doesn't want a baby so they are left with the only solution, they break up. Leigh moves to San Francisco, playing the field and drinking too much while Jodie becomes pregnant with a little girl named Rosie. How will this ever lead to a happy ending???

I admit I was having one of those emotional days but I loved these ladies so much that I couldn't help but cry several times throughout the book, but the tears at the ending were purely happy ones. I know this makes the book out to be painful and sad... It was at times but it was also really, really, really good. Everything had a reason for happening. What they went through made Jodie and Leigh stronger people so they could become who they needed to be for themselves and each other. The story was dramatic, moving, Very HOT in a wink, wink sort of way. It was thought provoking, touching and precious and emotional.

Everyone of Ms Bliss' books take me on such a different journey. Maybe that is why she is one of the best! Thank you so much Ms Bliss.

Veeery nice.
A complete romance that starts with a very painful break up, and tells the story of those two women, who struggle to find a love as powerful as the one they lost, until 11 years later, when they meet again. And with flashbacks in between. I've come to love this author and her intense and emotional stories.
I loved every minute of it.

My only complaint would be the importance of sex in this. It was not just that that tied the women together, but sometimes it did feel like their whole relationship was centered around what they loved to do in the bedroom. I guess that when you are into BDSM, it's kind of a big deal, to find that one person you can really be yourself with, but I just couldn't relate.

I received a copy of this book from Harper with the promise of an honest review. Thank you Harper for expanding on the story of these wonderful characters. This story does start out a bit depressing, but that makes the ending that much more delightful. It is full of heartbreak and resilient love with just the right mix of very steamy, often kinky sex. I will be reading this very romantic story over and over.

This book is absolutely beautiful. The emotion in it is tangible and the characters are very real. Even though the actually storyline could have turned depressing, I found it rather uplifting and very entertaining.
And the love scenes were very hot.
It's a new favourite.

Talk about an emotional roller coaster full of love, sadness, and sex. I rather enjoyed the narrator of this one - Laura Jennings. In many ways I wish I read this one instead. Sensory overload for the I have never found myself rooting for two people in a romance like I did in this one. 4.5 stars

Harper Bliss is a fantastic writer and I thoroughly enjoy reading her books. That being said, my love for Harper Bliss is the only thing that kept me reading this one. Leigh and Jodie were soulmates whose relationship ended when Leigh couldn’t be who Jodie needed her to be. The book follows different timelines as well as alternating chapters being told from both mains, which could be confusing for some readers. The book was emotional but kept going around in circles. The readers knows they should be together but pride kept them apart for so long. The hotness factor was a total bonus. Overall this is a decent read but the lack of character depth was a negative for me.

I've read quite a few of this author's books that I've really enjoyed. I wasn't going to review this one as it was too far off my usual reads and perhaps that means it's not totally fair of me to review it. It's probably because it's more about my own dislike of the subject. I'm certainly not criticising the writing. The sex scenes were just too much for me personally. Maybe if there had been less of them? Who knows. Other reviewers didn't seem to agree with me and that's fine. Personal preference. It won't put me off this author, I'll just be a little more aware of the blurb before I choose, although the blurb for this one didn't really hint at its depth.

I really enjoyed the storyline in this book. It was different and not what I expected at first but found myself drawn into the story.

The only thing missing for me was that they often spoke of their connection together outside of the bedroom but I felt this wasn't displayed well by the author. Anytime anything came up about their connection it was shown in the bedroom. It may be that I miss the point as I'm not into that type of sex they shared and therefore I may not understand the type of connection that can give a couple.

Coming Full Circle

A devastating breakup leaves Jodie and Leigh reeling, trying to process how their varying dreams have come between and split them apart crushing their hearts. Flashbacks of their first date and their sizzling years together somewhat help them move on.

Still, both Leigh and Jodie go through women and relationships searching for the one woman who will replicate what they had with the other while allowing each to work out their dream that could not be compromised on.

Years pass and Jodie's son, Troy, now grown up, figures out that his mom and Leigh really miss each other. So he blindsides his moms at his college graduation by arranging for them to meet and spend time together.

As they awkwardly interact reminiscing and sharing how their lives have progressed sidestepping their loneliness and frustration, they eventually fall into flirty banter. And decide to try to recreate the emotional atmosphere of vulnerability and trust they once shared in an intense, intimate sexual encounter only to hesitate when they realize they can't do just one night when it comes to them.

So they begin to wonder if they're ready to try again and whether they should. They question whether they have discovered what really matters and how to compromise. And have they figured out what love looks like for them with each other and as a family.

This is an impactful, passionate and intriguing story into the lives and thoughts of two women's intense attraction to each other at odds with their varying dreams who try to replicate what they had together with other women only to come full circle.

Second chance over a long period of time

SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: favorite trope, erotica, out of your comfort zone, established couple (?); UNICORN: BDSM (possibly other categories)

Don't use my review to decide to read this book. I don't read many second chance romances, and this story is one reason why - they never fell out of love with each other.

They were together in the beginning of the story, but had decided it couldn't last any longer. Their story was realistic, and all of the characters were believable. They just never seemed to connect on the same level with other partners as they had with each other. One of the biggest missing pieces for them was not being able to have the dom/sub relationship. For them, it was a level of love and trust essential to their completeness. I don't want or need pain with love, which was another reason why I didn't enjoy the novel. Other readers that like either, or both of my dislikes, will really enjoy it. It was well written, but not my thing.

I guess absence really does make the heart grow fonder. They never really fell out of love with each other they just chose different paths. Time and distance can never really end a love like theirs. Of course the sexual chemistry was off the charts. My ears were on fire with their sex scenes.Great narrator for this story.

Once in a Lifetime (29 chapters) Harper Bliss (Dec. 5-6, 2016)

First, let me say that there is some rough erotica in this story. Some people call it kink. But I can’t say this story is about kink, because that is small part of the story. Think of this story as a lesbian romance that has rough sex involved. Also, if I had known (I didn’t read the reviews beforehand; I don’t normally;) I would not have downloaded this book. Rough sex is just not my cup of tea. However, skipping over the parts, this was a pretty decent story.

The story starts off on a very down note. Very depressing and sad, and I wonder why the author started here. I don’t have a good feeling about these characters. The story does eventually right itself, but it becomes like a rollercoaster ride. Each instance with these characters, over time and space, was an important part in this whole story.

I noticed (after reading the story,) that some reviewers complained that the ending seemed short and forced (maybe.) I actually felt that the ending dragged on longer than the middle part. The ending came at the right time. Both characters had grown to the point of acceptance. And personally, I was ready for it to end. The whole story overall was just OK for me.

This is the third in a row that was deep and emotional to read. After this story, I am looking for a super heavy-duty, light as a feather romp. I originally thought this one was going to be a light romp. Sadly, it is not. This depressing streak has got to end sometime, right? I mean, why are all these particular book mag netting toward me right now?

Two stars.

This love story was epic. This is a masterclass in lesbian longing. Leigh and Jodie spend 11 years apart but never stop loving each other and wanting to be with each other. Pretty heart wrenching in parts, especially Leigh's story. This novel showcases Harper Bliss' ability to get to the absolute heart of a character and make the reader feel for each MC, heartbreak and joy. She's at the top of her craft -seamlessly moving back and forth between the main timeline of Jodie and Leigh's 11-year separation and flashbacks to their life together before they broke up.

Jodie and Leigh also have a BDSM thing in the bedroom, and what was so interesting was how it was portrayed so naturally. Like, they didnt go whole hog with with whips and chains and leather, but it was just a part of their sex life, and they both could never really replicate that right dynamic with anyone else.

My first Harper Bliss boo was About that Kiss, which I absolutely loved also. With this book, I am 150% a fan.

This is book is awesome and very well written. Read it, you won't be disappointed!

I read this when it was only a short story so I can't even tell you how excited I was to see it play out in a full length book! I really don't feel like I can do this book justice through my review so all I'm going to say is READ IT! If you like Harper's work then you will fully appreciate this novel. It's definitely more romantic than a lot of her earlier work but she makes up for (I'm not a chick-lit fan) by making her characters fully realized and believable. These are people I could know in my every day life!

Finishing, I felt happy and sad. I'm always sad after I finish a book I really enjoy because I know I'm not going to get to peer into the characters' lives anymore. However, Harper always leaves me feeling satisfied *wink wink* and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up any of her books without even reading the synopsis because I know it's going to be that good.

Highly recommended for romance/chick-lit fans and f/f erotica fans.

Surprisingly I did not connect with the first book I read by Harper Bliss. I decided to give her more of a chance and picked up this novel. This was my second book from Harper Bliss. I cannot tell you how happy I am after reading this.

This book is everything you want in a second chance romance. God, Leigh is so hot. I can’t. Anyways, Leigh and Jodie’s relationship is a roller coaster that, although you know the ending, the bumps and turns are unexpected. This book will make you believe in a true love and make you emotional. Check the tags for sure. The BDSM was light.

I love this story so much and can’t wait until it’s been long enough to reread it again. Recommended to everyone. Their romantic and sexual chemistry was off the charts. So amazing.
➢Happy reading!
