Maybe This Time

Rate this book
Abigail Jansen is done with hockey . . . and hockey players. After leaving her two-timing NHL-star husband, Abby decides to start over in her hometown of Glenwood Falls, Colorado. There she doesn't have to deal with people gossiping behind her back or hear the word "hockey"---until her daughter tries out for the junior hockey team. Now Abby has to face her fears . . . and coach Jackson Westmore. He's tall, dark, handsome---and happens to hate her.

All through high school, talented hockey player Jackson Westmore had a crush on Abby, but he would never make a move on his best friend's girl. He gave her the cold shoulder out of self-preservation and worked out his frustrations on the ice. So when Abby returns, newly divorced and still sexy as hell, Jackson knows he's in trouble. Now even the best defensive skills might not keep him from losing his heart.

Maybe This Time is book two in the brand new Colorado Ice series by Jennifer Snow. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author. I’ve been so excited to get started on this series and this book was everything I hoped it would be. I loved Jackson and Abby. They frustrated me, made me swoon a little bit, sigh a lot, and fall in love with them.

Hockey!:

Abigail Jansen has been married for ten years to Dean, a famous hockey player. They started dating in high school and she left her home town of Glenwood Falls, Colorado, six months pregnant with him as he pursued his dream of a professional hockey player. The first five years were great. But then, they weren’t. She had enough when she walked in on him with two cheer leaders in bed with him, on their anniversary. Now, she is back in Glenwood Falls, staying with her parents, along with her precious nine year old daughter, Dani.

sexy hockey player:

Jackson Westmore comes from a hockey family. Both his brothers are professional hockey players. But he never made it to the pros. Now he is coaching a junior league in Glenwood Falls and flipping houses for a living. He loves coaching the kids and this year the league is allowing girls to try out. So his sister’s daughter Taylor can be on the team. He can’t believe that Abby is back in town. She was married to his best friend, Dean. Jackson has known Abby since the second grade. He has loved her just as long. But he never told her. Actually just the opposite. He always treated her coldly. When his best friend started dating her, it was agonizing to watch them together. But he never let on how he felt. Could this be a second chance for him to finally tell her how he felt? But she was married to his best friend. That’s just wrong, isn’t it?

“He didn’t know what it was about her that had him so completely, foolishly head over skates but resisting her was getting harder and harder.

Abby is determined to avoid Jackson. She has no idea why he always has seemed to dislike her so much. But then her daughter, Dani, shows interest in trying out for the hockey team. So it becomes harder and harder to avoid him. The more they are thrown together, the more she is seeing a different side to Jackson. And it is making her heart beat faster and her tummy all fluttery. This is not a good thing. Not at all.

“You know, you’re kinda nice when you’re nice.
“I’m always nice.
“Not to me, she whispered.

Maybe this time jennifer snow:

I just loved this book. Abby and Jackson were wonderful. Did I want to smack them once in awhile? Oh my gosh, yes! Jackson was driving me crazy with wanting him to tell Abby how he felt. And I can’t blame Abby for being cautious about getting involved again. Dean had hurt her badly. She is just getting back on her own two feet. And Dean is probably the world’s most horrible ex-husband. Just wait until you meet him. Okay, I better stop there. You will think I am prone to violence.

Couples love:

I am thrilled to have been allowed this opportunity to review this book. I don’t think I’ve read anything of Jennifer Snow’s that I haven’t loved but this series is going to be wonderful. I am so excited to see what comes next. I hope you’ll give this one a try as well. I think you’ll love it.

“I’m not going anywhere, Abby. My love is not going anywhere.

I am having an amazing year for finding new authors and now I can add Jennifer Snow to my list of must-read's. I really liked her take on the friends to lovers trop with the added tension of an almost enemies to lovers quality.

I enjoyed reading this story, and Jackson stole my heart with his sweet and sensitive nature. I loved how he was with Abby and they made a really cute couple. Abby was a strong character and I liked her throughout the whole book. Their relationship was captivating with not a lot of angst and just the right amount of intrigue.

It was a little frustrating when I was practically screaming at Jackson to tell Abby how he felt and he just wasn't hearing me. When they finally got together there it was all good from there and I didn't have any other issues. Overall, a recommend from me and I hope many people will give this book a chance. I can't wait to go back and read the authors other work.

I gave this nearly half a book to pick up the pace and start making stuff happen. That's too long to wait. Jackson is an industrial-grade douche. To Abby. Just to Abby. Which has spawned a new theory for me, but I'll get to that in the end where you can skip it if you aren't into silliness. The thing is, we're in his head so we "know" that he likes her, like, really a lot so he's mean because . . . something something, best friend's ex, only he doesn't really even like the friend any more and they don't hang out or talk or... Yeah, it's stupid in addition to being the giant drag on pace that all negative motivations* are. And Snow showing how this started in second grade when he was the new kid resenting that he got a girl for a mentor/friend assignment only serves to underscore how juvenile this is. Plus, she's been gone to LA for ten years and he hasn't had any other relationships because "until he found someone who made his chest ache with longing to be near them, like Abby did, he'd rather be alone." That is an actual quote right at the end of Chapter 9.

So he's an emotionally-stunted goblin is what I'm saying.

Abby isn't any better. I really hate when authors try to convince me that their heroine (it's always the heroine) is oh-so "noble" because she doesn't care about/want alimony, she can rely on herself by gum. This is not noble. I'm not saying gouge the guy or be mean and take him for all he's got. I'm just saying that that system exists as a legal process for a reason and those reasons aren't bad ones, for all they're extremely tricky to apply. This supposedly noble impulse reads to me as treating yourself with contempt. It's like saying that you don't matter and you shouldn't have to bother with fighting to get the value of your sacrifices because they, like you, are worthless. So Abby being all "poor me, maybe I should just sign some papers agreeing he doesn't owe me much so I can be done with it" is lame and it makes me like her less. Because it shows how little she likes herself.

So she's a self-hating doormat is what I'm saying.

I don't know about you, but I'm not interested in stories where an emotionally-stunted goblin and a self-hating doormat are driven into each others' arms by hormones. Because so far? Yeah, the only thing pulling them together at all is how excited they are by the pretty boy/girl. That's it. Ugh.

The lakebed theory of douchery: So yeah, Jackson is perfectly nice to everybody else but an active jackwagon to Abby. And I'm all, "you know, that means he's really a giant jerk and just presents it selectively is all." So my theory is that douchery is like a lake bed. I don't care how inviting the shoreline is when the waters are low, it's the high water mark that determines where you build your house. Jackson may be all placid and wonderful most of the time, but he's a giant snot weasel to Abby. So he's a giant snot weasel, really.

The maximal theory of douchery: Or in terms of math (because I'm having fun now). If Jackson is, say, 5% jerk to everyone else and 95% jerk to Abby then he's 95% jerk. You don't take an average or a mean or even the median. Your jerk level is the maximal of your collective jerkiness. So yes, feel free to judge someone by how (s)he treats the waitstaff, the servants, the siblings, the grandma, the dog, or the high school crush he just can't get over...

* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. a bit back (or, if that link doesn't work, ) and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

She came back home to heal when she divorced her hockey star husband. What she didn’t plan on was her young daughter wanting to follow in her father’s skates and play on a junior co-ed league. As if the constant reminder of hockey and her past wasn’t enough, the coach was her ex’s best friend and they mixed like oil and water.

Abigail and Jackson each had their own reasons for not getting along when she was dating her ex in high school. Little did Abby know Jackson had wanted her then and still wants her now. Abby has one rule, she will never fall for a hockey player again. Well, you know what they say about rules, they are meant to be broken, but Abby’s fear of another broken heart is worse than being slammed into the boards.

Jackson didn’t make the big leagues like his friends and brothers so sharing his love of the game with kids was as close as he will get to the feel of the rush of speeding down the ice to the shouts of the crowd. As their hearts face off, can they finally admit what they want?

Get ready to rumble! Jennifer Snow’s Maybe This Time is low on angst and high on fun reading! Ms. Snow has scored a hat trick with fabulous characters, humor and heart and a second chance at love for two deserving people! I guess all that’s left to say is She shoots! She Scores! (Another fabulous romance!)

★★ 3.5 Stars ★★

The start of a new series by Jennifer Snow, the blurb for this series hooked me in with the promise of a second chance romance between two childhood 'friends'.

Abigail was married for ten years to her high school sweetheart, and is back in her hometown after going through a painful divorce to NHL superstar Dean.

Her vow - to never ever get involved in anything Hockey related ever again.

Too bad her daughter wants to join the school's co-ed Ice Hockey team, because now not only is she stuck with the game that tore her marriage apart, but the Coach is her ex-husband's best friend, who for some unknown reason, seems to hate her with a disdain she feels she doesn't deserve.

This was a really sweet book, and it had just the right amount of tension to keep me reading.

Enjoyable characters, low on angst, and high on romance. A recommended read for a cozy afternoon.

Maybe This Time is book two in the brand new Colorado Ice series by Jennifer Snow and I just fell in love with it. One of the first things that drew me to wanting to read Maybe This Time was the cover, then of course the blurb, I might not be a fan of hockey but I love reading about hockey players. Jackson and Abby won my heart from the very beginning and this is one series I will be keeping my eye on.

Abigail Jansen has just moved back home to Glenwood Falls, Colorado. With her divorce from Dean, a famous hockey player, coming to a close she just wants to start over with her nine year old daughter, Dani. It’s not going to be easy fitting in around her hometown again. All her old friends never left and have almost the perfect lives and she feels like a failure returning ten years later to live with her parents and all with no job. But on the plus side she has left her cheating ex in the rearview mirror. Abigail knows she is going to run into Dean’s best friend, Jackson, sooner rather than later but she would rather it be later since the man has never been kind to her. When Dani tries out for the junior hockey team and makes it she knows that she will be seeing Jackson more, but is Abigail ready to move on and live the life she left behind all over again?

Coming from a hockey family, Jackson Westmore always dreamed of being in the NHL but he never made it. Now he is the coach of junior league hockey and this year they are allowing girls to try out. When Abby’s daughter Dani tries out and makes the team, Jackson knows they have to meet a common ground and get along, but that’s not really the problem. He can remember the day he fell in love with Abby but ever since then he’s been nothing but cold to her, especially when she starting dating his best friend, Dean. Now that she is back in Glenwood Falls and single again he has a second chance to finally tell her how he feels. But when a lifetime opportunity he never expected pops up Jackson wonders if he will have to choose which second chance he will take, because both are what he’s longed for.

I just loved Maybe This Time, it was sweet and everything I love in a romance. Ms. Snow gave the right amount of Jackson and Abby’s backstory which helped their current situation come off as more realistic. I really enjoyed getting little glimpses of what they were like when they were kids and teenagers. I thought Jackson started off a little on the cold side but once the story started to develop I could see how head over heels in love he was with Abby and was shocked on how long he has been feeling this way. Ms. Snow has a talent for creating characters who are intelligent, funny and sexy, while still giving readers an epic story.

There were a few times I wanted to yell at Jackson to get his head out of his ass, but the little process he made from time to time was sweet and showed how bad he really had it for Abby. Abby was a little on the cautious side on getting involved again so soon but I couldn’t blame her, I mean she is in the middle of a divorce, starting her life over and has a daughter to raise. I don’t want to give too much away but there is a scene with Abby and Jackson’s sister, Becky and Becky mentions a third box that Jackson made and wondering where it went. I actually teared up on this part because Jackson was nothing like how Abby saw him and seeing him through different eyes was just one of the most memorable scenes in Maybe This Time.

Maybe This Time was a heartfelt story and already has me yearning for more. We also meet Jackson’s professional hockey player brothers, Ben and Asher, who I am definitely looking forward to getting to know better. I have read a few of Ms. Snow’s other books but by far Maybe This Time is my favorite and I can’t wait for the world to get to know Abby and Jackson. I highly recommend Maybe This Time if you are a lover of second chance romance stories like I am. I think you’ll love it!

This review may contain SPOILERS!
The thing is that this book wasn't bad, it wasn't bad at all, there were just some minor details I wasn't completely in love with. I loved the writing style of the book though, it was easy to read and absolutely lovely written. The cozy Colorado-smalltown-atmosphere made me fall in love with this book instantly, and I really tried to love it more, but here's the thing. I couldn't really connect with the main character, Abby. Sometimes I felt with her distress and love and confusion, but other times I felt like she was an emotional brick. I also felt like the love interest Jackson, which by the way is my favorite character in this book, did all the chasing and persuasion, and thereby it just always felt like he appreciated her more, than she did him. Another minor detail that irritated me, was how Abby handled her daughter, Dani. It felt like she was a helicopter parent, you know, someone who is obsessively overprotective, to a degree were I was seriously distracted from the love story. Apart from those things though it was a lovely novel, and due to the writing style I'm a hundred percent certain I'm going to read the next book too!

Abigail Jansen has just moved back to Glenwood Falls after her divorce from a pro hockey player. She is trying to rebuild her life with her daughter and get back on her feet under the watchful eye of the inhabitants of the town she left years ago.

Unlike his two brothers, Jackson Westgrove did not realize his NHL dreams, so he remains a coach for the youth hockey league in town...the league that has just gone co-ed and his niece and Abby's daughter want to play for. Now Abby cannot avoid hockey or her daughter's coach.

Jackson will have to try to keep hiding the feelings that he has kept buried under a facade of animosity. Like his pro hockey dreams, Abby was just always out of his reach and she eventually ended up marrying his best friend. She never really understood why he seemed to hate her. He has kept his feelings a secret for a long time, but years have passed and circumstances have changed. Now that she is back, it is getting harder and harder to resist her. And now that he sees an opening, he knows he's got to take a chance even it means failure.

Jackson is a really good, lovable guy, but he has a history of being a bit too selfless and allowing people walk over him. He has fears, insecurities, and issues with self worth that have affected him. He is also challenged by loyalty to his best friend and is just now realizing that he might have been wrong about some things.

Abby is resilient and spunky, but still overwhelmed and scared of jumping into anything too quickly. Her life has undergone so many changes and she has been hurt. She just wants some stability for her and her daughter away from the life of excess so that they can heal and move on. Her history understandably makes her guarded and untrusting.

Abby and Jackson keep getting thrown together. It's a mix of new reactions, physical attraction, and hidden feelings from the past. Their lives have become more intertwined and it begins to look like this might just be his chance at finally getting the girl...if he can convince her to take a chance. But he still has some other dreams as well. Life is a series of choices that lead in different directions. It is up to the individuals to figure out what they can live with and without. And some choices require sacrifice.

What happens when you have the chance of getting everything you ever wanted, but the two things cannot co-exist?

This is a sweet and swoony second-chance love story centered around hockey and a small town. It was a light read with fun banter, interesting characters, and an engaging writing style that drew me in. It was not too angsty, but had just enough drama to keep it interesting. I enjoyed the side characters of his sister, Becky and Neil (), the precocious tomboys, Dani and Taylor, and the whole community.

There are more books coming in this series and I am sure two of them will feature his NHL playing brothers, Ben and Asher. They are both die hard single men but I have a feeling that it will be fun to see their status change.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Maybe This Time (Colorado Ice, #2) by Jennifer Snow After separating from her NHL husband, Dean Underwood, Abigail Jansen returns to her hometown of Glenwood Falls, Colorado. She wants nothing to do with hockey; however, her daughter wants to try out for the hockey team. To make matters more uncomfortable her daughter’s coach is Jackson Westmore, her ex’s best friend. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audiences.

Abigail is an admirable heroine. After separating from Dean, she moves from California back to Colorado with her nine-year-old daughter, Dani. She needs to start over and wants to provide a good life for her and Dani. They temporarily move in with her parents until she can get a place of her own. Her parents are supportive, good people. It is a humbling experience. She knows she is being talked about and judged in the small town. Abigail puts her teaching degree to use and gets a job as a substitute teacher. She works hard to prove herself. She is a strong woman and good mother.

Understandably, Dani is having a difficult time dealing with the divorce. Abigail doesn’t want to badmouth Dean to Dani. Abigail wants Dani to be happy, even if that includes letting her play hockey. I love that Dani befriends Taylor (Jackson’s niece).

I like Jackson’s character. He has secretly been in love with Abigail since they were kids. Of course, she thinks he hates her. Per the bro-code he needs to stay away from her. He is a loyal friend to Dean. Both working at the school and being Dani’s coach, he cannot avoid Abigail. To top things off, his sister is Abigail’s BFF. Needless to say, they are put in some interesting/awkward situations. I like that Jackson is open-minded and discovered that his best friend is not the same guy he was nine years ago. I felt bad that he didn’t make it to the NHL when both of his brothers and best friend did. I had a lot of respect for the decisions he made throughout this story. He is an amazing hockey coach and a good person. He reevaluated his priorities doing what is best for him now.

This is the first book that I have read by Jennifer Snow. I really enjoy her writing style and plan on continuing to read this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

I haven't read the novella previous to this book but it can read as a stand-alone no problem.

After divorcing her cheating husband, Abigail move to her Colorado hometown with her 9 yrs old daughter so they can start a new life. The little girl is not happy about the change, but she will soon make a new friend who is as passionated as she is about hockey. Abigail find a new job as a substitute teacher and is ready to let the past go. But when Dani ask her permission to play in the junior hockey league, Abby is less than thrill for two reasons: 1- she doesn't want to have anything to do with this sport since her ex is an hockey player and 2- the coach is her ex's best friend and has always act as if she was a nuisance.

Abby and Jackson both intend to avoid each other but it will be impossible right from the start because her daughter became best friend with Jackson's niece and the arena is next to the school and also because Abby is a good mom who wants to be involved in her little girl's life. Playing chaperone for the first junior hockey match, tickets for a NHL match, an evening at the fairground, are just some of the occasion that will bring them together.

At first I was a little worried about the hero's attitude. He's been in love with Abby since they were teenager and to not show it, he began to act like he hated her. When she comes back in Glenwood Falls, he doubted her story (of the cheating husband) and I thought he was taking the "hating thing" a notch too seriously. But it didn't last and he kind of stole the show a lot of times. I find it hard to believe that Jackson valued that much his friendship with Dean when it said they didn't see or talk much anymore and if he knew him so well like he seem to believe than why did he doubted Abby? And then suddenly he was quick to judge Dean ? But I'm glad it didn't take all the space from the story.

A lot of things that happened felt conveniently but that's kind of what I love about romance novels ; the feeling that destiny always intervene, that fate is inevitable.
I feel like I don't have the right words to explain it so I'll just finish by saying I had a good time with this story and those characters and I will definitively read the next one in the series.

Fazit

Was passiert in diesem Buch?

I loved Maybe This Time. It was a fun spin on a sports romance, and also a fun twist on the second chance romance trope that I haven't really seen play out this way before. It was sexy, romantic, and had the perfect amount of drama/angst. I loved that Jackson was alpha-light, because it meant there were moments that he was perfectly sensitive and introspective without falling into beta-land. I also thought the use of the children characters was really well done. They weren't delegated to background figures, but rather rolled with the story and helped with the relationship development between Jackson and Abby. I also really liked the way this series has been set up. Jennifer Snow gave just enough information about the other siblings, and just enough page time, to make me interested in their stories without sacrificing any of this book to set up their books. I can't wait to read more in this series!

Second read - 21 May, 2020
DNF
This one didn't hold up on a second read for me. The pacing was slow, the hero was a jerk and his behaviour (taking sides, etc.) just came across as childish. I also felt like the secondary characters were overused and minimised the time the hero and heroine spent on the page together. Overall, DNF.

Third read - 17 to 18 March, 2021
DNF
This book isn't for me. I wasn't engaged by the plot or characters. DNF and unhauled.

Abby and Jackson are a wonderful friends to lovers romance. With a little twist. Jackson has been in love with Abby for years, and hiding it by avoiding her and trying to stay loyal to his best friend who was involved with Abby all through high school.

Abby, however, thinks Jackson dislikes her, so seeing him again, and discovering that her daughter is going to be on the hockey team he coaches, is not welcome news.

I enjoyed the development of their relationship. The tension between them in their first meetings was well written and made the progression of their relationship was believable. I thought the way it was handled worked for the characters and for their personalities.

The writing was strong, the characters and the dialog worked and the secondary characters added to the story without causing it to stall in any areas.

This is technically the 2nd book in the series, however it can be read as a standalone.

I think I enjoyed this book as much as I did because it was narrated by the amazing Andi Arndt. Her narration can cover up a variety of sins in the story that might have bugged me if I was reading on my own or if a less talented narrator were voicing it. As it was, I ended up (mostly) enjoying this relatively generic small-town hockey themed romance. It's about what you would expect in a story of this type, and it was enjoyable enough to keep me interested. Having said that, upon reflection I think there were a few flaws in this story that should have bothered me more than they did. Sometimes I end up hating a book if I happen to be reading it at the wrong time to enjoy it. In this case it seems as if I caught this book at the right time to enjoy it, despite the flaws.

I think I have a soft spot for stories where someone has been in love with someone forever and finally gets the chance at that love that they thought was unattainable. That's the case with Jackson, who has always loved Abby, but Abby ended up in love with and eventually married to his best friend, Dean. For some reason that isn't fully explained satisfactorily (one of the flaws of the story) Jackson decides to deal with his hidden love for Abby by treating her like dirt. It makes sense if you're 11. Not so much when you are 30ish. Despite this weird relationship tension to start the book Jackson and Abby move pretty quickly into "we kinda like each other" territory. Why? It's never fully developed. It would have been more satisfactory if the story had a gradual thawing of their relationship, but instead they become friendly and then friends and then more pretty quickly. It was a missed opportunity, in my opinion.

The drama of the story comes from two angles. First, Jackson has always loved Abby, but Abby loved Dean, and Dean was (is?) Jackson's bff. You don't move in on your best friend's girl, right? Never mind that your best friend was a royal arse to Abby, cheating on her and treating her terribly as their marriage dissolved. Never mind that Jackson and Dean haven't really hung out together since high school. It's been years, and surely the "bro code" has an expiration date in this case. But that's what is holding Jackson back, and it is why he has to be a meany to Abby ... because I guess being kind to someone automatically leads to wild sex and talk of love, so a guy's gotta guard his heart by being a bum? Who knows? But for some reason I rolled with this and managed to see that Jackson was a good person behind his childish actions. Like I say, I must have been in the right mood for it.

The second drama angle involves Abby's disastrous marriage to profession hockey star, Dean. Dean's a piece of work, and because of his awfulness Abby has determined not to be involved with a hockey guy ever again. That becomes a problem when Jackson (who Abby has now fallen in love with, whether she labels it that way or not) gets the chance to try out for a spot on an NHL team. What should Abby do? She loves Jackson, but she hated life with Dean. So she does what you would expect in a story like this. She dumps the man she loves in a heartless manner, making everyone miserable in the process. Two problems about this drama ... First of all, the drama with Dean wasn't developed enough. It was always there in the background, popping up occasionally to bring in the angst, but it was never properly dealt with. There were opportunities for real depth in this story ... dealing with Abby's daughter's issues with the divorce and leaving her former life behind her, the struggles in trying to figure out how to co-parent after a nasty divorce, showing strength in the face of a hurtful ex-spouse, etc. But these were glossed over to the detriment of the story.

But, dang it, I still ended up liking this story well enough. I rooted for Jackson and Abby. The only thing that really bugged me enough to make me dislike the story was Abby's actions toward the end of the book when she chose to push Jackson away because he might realize his dream of playing professional hockey. This REALLY bothered me ... maybe because I felt like Abby was being super selfish about it. It bothers me when two people are in love, and yet they don't trust that love enough to figure things out. Erg! So why am I giving this four stars? At least one of those stars is for the great Andi Arndt narration. The rest? Who knows? The heart wants what the heart wants, and for some reason this week my heart wanted this one. I ended up liking it. Four stars.

Dean has broken Abby's heart. She always thought they had something special, but now she's divorced and she and her daughter Dani are back in her hometown Glenwood Falls. Abby is done with hockey, but Dani has other plans, she wants to try out for her school's team, which is coed. The coach of the junior hockey team is Dean's best friend Jackson. He's always been hostile to Abby and she doesn't look forward to running into him on a regular basis. Was it really a good plan to move back to Glenwood Falls? Abby might be done with hockey, but it clearly isn't done with her.

Jackson loved Abby from the moment he laid eyes on her. He was too afraid to let her know how he felt when they were in high school and then his friend Dean made a move, so he lost his chance with the girl of his dreams. His loyalty to Dean made him treat her with contempt. That way they'd never find out how he felt. He pretends to hate her when they meet again, but can he keep doing that now that she's back in town to stay? She's single and that means he can finally tell her how he feels, but is he courageous enough this time or will his nerves make it impossible for him once more?

Maybe This Time is a wonderful romantic story. Abby is a sweetheart. She's always trying to do the right thing and she wants to make something of her life. I admired her determination and her love for her daughter. She's independent and she's a dedicated mother. Dani is a great outgoing kid and it was fun to read about her passion for hockey. She and Jackson have an instant connection and seeing the way he treats her daughter makes it more difficult for Abby to dislike him. Jackson is a kind and caring man and being there for the people he loves is very important to him. He's a fantastic coach and he knows how to handle difficult situations. The only thing he doesn't know how to deal with is his love for Abby. It was endearing to read about his deep feelings for her. They're both incredibly sympathetic and deserve a chance to be happy. I couldn't wait to find out if they would and was spellbound from the moment I started to read their story.

Jennifer Snow has a lovely descriptive writing style. I really liked the way she writes about hockey and applaud that she writes about girls trying out for the junior team. That made the story even more special for me. Her writing is sympathetic and I loved the way she makes her character's feelings come to life. I could easily understand their emotions and had tears in my eyes when they were unhappy and smiled when things were going well for them. Abby and Jackson are made for each other and I loved their amazing meaningful connection. Maybe This Time is a sparkling, captivating and heartwarming story.

Overall, I really liked the book. Jackson frustrated and annoyed me for awhile but I think it was just because I liked him so much and wanted him to be happy. His behavior is probably typical of someone in his situation. He is trying to be a loyal friend but he also has an opportunity with the woman he has loved forever. I liked Abby. She was tough and she handled her ex well. I also liked how much of a part Becky played in the story. I wanted to know more about her life with Neil. I am hoping these characters continue to play a part in the series. I also love that this book is read by one of my favorite narrators, Andi Arndt.

After separating from her NHL husband, Dean Underwood, Abigail Jansen returns to her hometown of Glenwood Falls, Colorado.

I've never read Jennifer Snow before but after finishing this book I'm definitely going to be looking up her other books. There were a few things that bugged me about the story but the book was so cute that more than made up for those things.

Abby was a wonderful character who I fell in love with and I admired her spunk in making the best out of a horrible situation. Her character made me laugh and I definitely wanted her to get her happy ever after. Jackson was sweet but he was one of the little things that bothered me about the story. I know he's loved Abby since they were in highschool but sometimes he was a bit too much of a door mat for my tastes. There's being in love with someone and then there's having no backbone. That's more of my personal preference though. I recently had a discussion with a friend that I tend to gravitate towards more alpha heroes.

The writing more than made up for that though. The writing style completely drew me in and I fell in love with Abby, her daughter, Jackson's sister and his niece. I'm really hoping we will get Jackson's brothers stories as well. I definitely recommend this for those who love a sweet romance that will have you smiling and laughing as you read.

A steamy second-chance romance!I love Jennifer's writing. The stories all move an a great pace, they are engaging and the characters have depth and a uniqueness that isn't always found with other authors. Jackson. My gosh. He was just absolutely perfect. But can you imagine? Having a crush on someone for all that time, and then bam! She's back in your life, every day...But THEN, he got ANOTHER second chance that I didn't see coming, and I was really rooting for him.Abby was put in a difficult position, what with having to look out for not only herself, but her daughter too. There were a couple of times where I wanted to slap some sense into her, but I enjoyed reading her indecision and vulnerability, and found those qualities made her more relatable.I was introduced to characters from the first book in the series, and while this is absolutely a stand-alone, I am DYING to read the first book so I can read more Becky. She was hilarious and I can't wait to read her story! All in all, huge fan. I can't wait to see where this series goes next!!!(I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)

Maybe This Time
Colorado Ice, Book #1
By Jennifer Snow
ISBN: 9781455594863

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Andra

Summary

Starting over means a second chance.

Abigail Jansen is done with hockey . . . and hockey players. After leaving her two-timing NHL-star husband, Abby decides to start over in her hometown of Glenwood Falls, Colorado. There she doesn’t have to deal with people gossiping behind her back or hear the word “hockey”—until her daughter tries out for the junior hockey team. Now Abby has to face her fears . . . and coach Jackson Westmore. He’s tall, dark, handsome—and happens to hate her.

All through high school, talented hockey player Jackson Westmore had a crush on Abby, but he would never make a move on his best friend’s girl. He gave her the cold shoulder out of self-preservation and worked out his frustrations on the ice. So when Abby returns, newly divorced and still sexy as hell, Jackson knows he’s in trouble. Now even the best defensive skills might not keep him from losing his heart.

Review

As I continue on my journey that is the writing of Jennifer Snow I am truly delighted and amazed. How can an author so fully engage me? I will tell you how: by creating a world with charming characters with depth of character and some quirkiness (after all aren’t we all a bit quirky in our own way?).

The story of Abigail Jansen begins with her 9-year-old daughter (Dani) giving her the silent treatment. Apparently Dani was not thrilled to be moving from California back to Abigail’s home town Glenwood Falls, Colorado in the wake of her parent’s divorce. Abigail gets a job (at least temporarily) at the local school, where she runs into the Westmore clan. Two of the Westmore “boys are professional hockey players in the same league as her ex. The third Westmore boy (Jackson…and he is definitely no longer a ‘boy) is the local hockey coach and best friend (or is he?) of her ex. Abigail has a history with Jackson so she has vowed to avoid him at all costs but then her daughter tries out for the junior co-ed hockey league.and makes it. So avoiding coach Westmore is not an option. And let me tell you…the sparks fly.

I love how honorable Jackson tries to be in the beginning, like he is respecting some time honored teen code to not hit on your best friend’s girl (even though he was interested in her first). But as time goes by and Jackson learns of the ill treatment Dean bestowed upon Abigail, you can sense Jackson’s loyalties shifting. The electric energy between the two is palpable and I could not but hope that they could come together, regardless of their fighting the attraction. Make no mistake, Abigail fights this attraction tooth and nail (so to speak).

“The only thing holding him back from making a move was her obvious disdain for him whenever they were forced to share the same air.

When it finally seems like Abigail and Jackson have set up ground rules to be able to interact together as parent and coach, you get passages like the following which definitely tell a different story:

“He stared at her mouth. Damn, a kiss from those beautiful pink lips would be worth a slap in the face. One taste of her would be worth unraveling any progress they’d made in becoming friendly. Who the hell wanted friendly?

When Jackson finally confesses that he has feelings (and actually has since the second grade), things get very sticky (and hot):

..Jackson, why did you kiss me?

“Because I have feelings for you.

“Like good feelings?

“No, terrible, unwanted, unreciprocated, completely wrong feelings…but they’ve always been there, and now it seems they have a mind of their own. he said.

It seems that Jackson has always carried a torch and did not know how to act upon it nor express it, before his best buddy Dean fell for Abigail. Now he has his opportunity. Let’s hope he can be the man that Abigail needs.

I found the progression of the relationship (once it got started) both plausible and proper for a single mother. I really liked Jackson’s caring behavior not only towards his own niece, Taylor, but also towards Dani. Both Jackson and Abigail took into account the kids when proceeding with their relationship. A plus in my books.

The plot moved at a good pace and kept my interest throughout. I enjoyed the professional hickey game where brother was pitted against brother! Who doesn’t love a good match up. I really liked this second chance romance between two childhood ‘friends. I cannot wait for the next book in this series..I am hooked

Kurzum

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I discovered this series a few years ago and read a book out of order. Then I got the audiobook for this one for free during a promotion and left it sitting again for a while. But it's cold out and I undoubtedly always go looking for wintery feel books. If there's snow or ice I need to read it this time of year. And this was the perfect time to dust this off the shelves. When I read the blurb, I was hooked!

The hero of this story, Jackson, has been in love with Abby from the moment he met her when they were just kids. He never acted on that attraction and his best friend ended up marrying her. He got the hockey career he dreamed of, the girl and the picture perfect family, while Jackson ended up living back home in their small town, alone, and working as the hockey coach at the high school. And then scandal hits Abby's marriage. She comes back home with her daughter and in the process of getting divorced. Years of animosity get pushed aside and Jackson finally gets his chance.

I'm going to be honest here. The trope for this book is like catnip for me. It's the one that got away! And away to go marry his best friend nonetheless. I was rooting for Jackson to get the girl from the start and I really liked how the whole thing was done. But them getting together now is not without new obstacles as well. In the end, this made for a great read that I completely breezed through because I didn't want to put it down.

If you like your heroes sweet and a story to warm your heart on a cold winter night, then pick this one up. It left me with a smile on my face. And as I've read book 3 already I can probably suggest you breeze through the series! I'll be picking up book 2 soon to catch up. :)
