Two Dead and Counting...: The Underdog Detective Series

Rate this book
Frederick Hernandez thought he had opened his eyes, but it was still pitch black. He tried to lift his arm, but he couldn't raise a single limb. He tried to speak, but nothing came out. Gradually, he realized he was moving. "Here's your dead guy," a man announced as the moving sensation ceased. "Stick him in the vault," another man said. "I've got two autopsies to finish before I can start that one." Terror ricocheted through Frederick's body like a high-voltage electrical shock, causing his heart to jolt and then to flatline.

When Detective Jack Kendall's best friend dies, he makes a graveside vow to get to the bottom of it. Christine, his best friend's widow, hires attorney Cedric Johnson to file a wrongful death suit, but Jack is far too impatient to leave the investigative work up to him, and apparently he's not the only one.

It seems Stacy Young--a legal assistant in Cedric Johnson's office--has been suspicious of Cedric for some time now. When her boss, Joshua Royce, won't take her suspicions seriously, she tells Jack about a mysterious courier who comes in after hours to exchange messages between Cedric and an anesthesiologist in what she suspects is an insurance scam that is earning them a sizable fortune. Jack isn't convinced, but he agrees to look over the evidence she offers to deliver the next day--only she goes missing, and he has clearly become a target.

Prepare yourself for the unexpected. You may think you have figured it out, but I assure you, you don't! As the true nature of this crime is unveiled, you will wonder... could this happen in real life? Search it our for yourself. It is a frightening prospect indeed. Richard Schwartz

“Over the years, I’ve seen many situations where we, as the victim’s attorneys, were the only hope an injured person had of receiving true justice. My personal desire to help the underdogs in our society led to the creation of the main character in my novels, Detective Jack Kendall, who feels very much like I do about helping those less fortunate.

Since I enjoy mystery novels I found the novel TWO DEAD AND COUNTING to be a refreshing treat. It has a bit of a complex plot with various characters that are noble in some ways but also have their own selfish agendas. This makes the story fascinating and realistic with believable events that result in a surprise ending.

TWO DEAD is the story of Jack Kendall, a private detective with a buddy named Jack Steinberg. When Dan dies during a medical procedure, Kendall comes to the aid of his widow Christine. He hires Cedric Johnson to represent Christine in a possible malpractice suit.

But Johnson may be the wrong attorney for the job. We meet Stacy Young, a legal assistant for Johnson's law firm. When she sees suspicious events in the office after hours, she believes Johnson may be involved in an insurance scam. She meets with Kendall and tells him about her suspicions. Then she goes missing.

Kendall soon learns he is a target when his home is broken into and he is later run over by a car.

Much to the chagrin of the cop Captain Kevin Thomas, who is also investigating the case, Kendall and Young become active in the case as they get closer to the truth and into more and more danger until the case is solved.

This is a great book to read since it is filled with lively characters and lots of excitement.

This book is full of surprises. It draws you in with rich characters, and fast moving scenes. If you skip a paragraph, you might miss something important. You learn quickly to expect the unexpected. I found myself anticipating the next layer because I knew it was coming!

Suspense, humor, and once or twice I came close to tears.

There is a lot more to say, but I don't want to "spoil" any of the surprises.

Two Dead and Counting is a great read.

I don't usually do reviews but wanted to add a little balance to the ones that have been posted. It was just meh for me. I bought this based on avg rating of 4.5 stars which is grossly over-rated by my standards. Granted I tend to be picky. Plot lines were rather preposterous and I found the whole thing to be corny.

Please use different binding! Book is falling apart every time I turn the page.
Other than that the story was engaging.
I like that there is a reference chart because the characters do get confusing.
Can't wait for the next book!
