Necroscope #13

Necroscope: Avengers

Rate this book
The packed cruise ship is a terrific nesting ground for a Lord and Lady of the Wamphyri on the run from E-Branch and the new Necroscope, Jake Cutter. By the time the ship is reported missing, the few beings still living on board will no longer be human . . . and the Wamphyri will be long fled to their next conquest. Korath, the vampire who lurks in Jake Cutter's mind, is determined to gain control of Jake's life, and Jake is equally determined not to let him have it. But to win this struggle Jake must confide in Ben Trask-and Trask, the head of E-Branch, is likely to want Jake dead the minute he learns of Jake's intrusive passenger! The spore garden planted under London by the third Wamphyri, Lord Swartz, is bearing bitter fruit indeed as a mysterious sleeping sickness-with a vampiric taint-slowly spreads among the population of Great Britain. E-Branch action teams have more on their plates than they can handle. They must locate terrorists who threaten the world with nuclear homicide; permanently close the Gate between the Wamphyri world and Earth; analyze the spore plague; and locate and destroy the three Wamphyri. In Brian Lumley's Necroscope: Avengers , even the powers of Harry Keogh, the original Necroscope, summoned from the Great Beyond via the combined powers of E-Branch's strongest agents, may not be enough to defeat the monsters who have brought Earth to the brink of total destruction.

A ship is taken over by vampires, and the passengers are killed and turned. E-branch is set to help, but the initial attack is just the type of the iceberg.

This was a great finale for the E-branch trilogy. It has all the action pack that you would expect for the series, and it follows the Jack arc very well all the final questions are answered and has a great finale that that works well for this book this trilogy and The Necroscope series as a whole.

The lowest rated of the E-Branch trilogy but still loads of fun. The book took a bit to get going but the characters were strong enough to keep the momentum and enjoyment up. The last part of the story is a mad rush to a satisfying conclusion that featured an epilogue that could've had its own trilogy.

I’m determined to finish the series.

This book was quite a genre bender. Set sometime during- or a little after- the cold war it was an alternate universe supernatural version. It felt very noir-esque to me. It also felt a bit sci-fi to me, with vampires from another dimension angle, but I'm sure purists would disagree with me. >:D

It was an extremely sloooooow read, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed this. This will not be a lot of people's cuppa tea, but for what it was, I enjoyed myself.

This was my first book I read from the series, so I am looking forward to reading the earlier books.

I honestly wasn't going to rate this one at all. I mean, it's the 13th book in this series, and it's the first one that I've read. I knew going into it that there was going to be a lot of stuff that I didn't know anything about, but the beginning of the book included a pretty detailed (so I thought) "What Has Come Before" section, so I figured I was mostly caught up. But I didn't want my ignorance of the story to affect any ratings, so I had planned on just skipping it.

HOWEVER... then I read the book. There are tons of problems here for me. First, Lumley uses a lot of EXCLAMATION POINTS!!! They are everywhere--in the dialog, in his descriptions, you name it. This really gives the whole book a very over-the-top, waaaaaay too dramatic feel. You can almost hear the soundtrack going "DA DA DAAAAAAAAA".

And the story is very disjointed. There is a main plot line--the E-Branch anti-vampire squad takes on the three remaining great Vampires--but it gets diluted with a bunch of sub-stories. And those sub-stories don't ever really seem to come together.

SPOILERS!!!!!

But by far the most disappointing thing about this is what happens to the E-Branch folks. So it turns out that a few of them had been exposed to some vampire fungus spores in a previous book. Everyone thought that there was no effect, but wrong! Because very suddenly--and I mean like one minute everyone's just fine, but the next minute--they are vampires! And their reaction to this sudden shocking turn of events is pretty much: "Well, Goddammit, we're vampires."

I am still willing to admit that the fact that I hated this book is solely because I haven't read the previous 12.

But I'm so not interested in doing that.

This book really kind of made me sad, for a couple of reasons. For one, I think this is the end of the story for Ben Trask, Ian Goodly, David Chung. Maybe even of Harry Keogh. I'm not sure, as there is still one more Necroscope book to go. So, perhaps the end of Harry's story and only one more book to go to the end of the Necroscope story. I've enjoyed it through thirteen books. I still have a dozen or so other Lumley stories to read, so I guess I will remained entertained, although I don't know it there will be another character like Harry.

Action packed conclusion to the E-Branch trilogy. Not really sure what to make of the “ending which felt a little bit rushed & left more open ends than I was expecting. Not so much of a cliffhanger but a “what? moment. It actually feels like a setup to a whole new section of the Necroscope universe. Audiobook narration was typically excellent for this series.

This was the 13th book in the Necroscope series and last in the E-Branch trilogy. What a fun ride.
Lots of plots and subplots going on in this one.

Malinari and Vavarra turn a cruise full of people into vamps.
Schwarz spores work and there is now a Spore Plague in London that may or may not have contaminated our E-Branch heroes.
Russian nukes need to be discovered
The Gate needs to be destroyed to stop the 3 Defilers from going back to Starside/Sunside
Korath was being dealt with by a summoned Harry and he comes into play at the end , which I thought was very smart in dealing with Malinari.

And the ending! Great Epilogue. Loved Goodly showing us various parts of the future and what happens to our heroes, their offspring/descendants and the world at large.

Great addition. Jake Cutter earned his Necroscope stripes. And Liz and Milly earned E-Branch stripes respectively.

This latest in the series was a terrifying look at what the end of the world through vampirism might look like. When 3 invading Wamphyri get through the gate into our world, their aim is to take over our earth and rule over us all. E-Branch is on their trail, however, but a little too late to save the human race entirely. They, themselves, are also in danger of losing their humanity and put every last ounce of themselves into not allowing things to get worse.

Wow!!!!

Mr. Lumley, you did it again! You wrote another classic for the years to come. I was a little worried over this series of books because the last two were just O.K. but this one makes up for those.
These characters (even the veterans) come to fruition in this book. All three successions of the story (beginning, middle and end) had their merits. In the end, it all flowed very well. Brian Lumley is still one of my favorite all time writers.

The good part of this book was it was more of the great atmosphere and mythos that you've come to love if you are still reading these books. The bad part is there was a bit too much sulking and brooding about. As with every book in this series it could have been about 200 pages less however the end of this book picked up and the prologue was a real pay off. Tempted to bump up a star just for the end of this book.

A great ending to the trilogy E-Branch Necroscope!
I'm just in love with the series!
The ending in my head looked like I was watching a good movie: open, but just enough to leave the viewer with his imagination, and not dumb questions.
I am delighted!

I like the series, but I grew bored with this book. Lumley puts in way too much stuff that needs to be cut. I live his vampires, but I could live without some of his verse.

The final book in the 4th Necroscope series made me feel that Lumley is getting tired of writing about Necroscopes and E-branch. Despite his introduction in Invaders and consequent character growth upon gaining the Necroscope powers, Jake Cutter ended up becoming a virtual carbon copy of the older Harry Keough from the original stories. The book was still tense and suitable paced to keep one's attention held, but lacked any real conviction from the characters. Especially in the end with their total lack of regard about their condition. There was just not enough horror in this one despite the graphic images whenever the ire of the big bad was aroused.

Copy of my Launchpad review from 2001:
Again, Lumley returns to the universe of the Necroscope and the Whampiri. If you loved the great many sequels that came after Necroscope I then you will probably love these three. However, despite liking the story immensely I noticed two problems: firstly, not having red every previous Lumley book in this universe, some characters and references were a mystery, spoiling the story in places; secondly, it suffers from defeating-evil-at-the-end-syndrome (a nasty practice of having nigh indestructible great evils from before time defeated by unfeasible means).

Its somewhat slow... but finally starting to pick up with less than a 4th of the book left to read. I think Lumley had by this point become tired of writing about E-Branch and vampires.

This was another great book in the Necroscope series! I really liked it a lot, but Defilers was the best in this 3 book sub series!

Amazing book and a fitting conclusion to this thread of the storyline; with there being enough to do other stuff in this world, or to leave it alone and explore different worlds.

Avengers, the final chapter in the "New" Necroscope series. As a whole I enjoyed the series but expected so much more. For the size of the volumes in the trilogy not a lot of action going on, huge amounts of character development and background and not enough story left me disappointed, but still an interesting read.

Přeplněná prázdninová loď se stane hrůzostrašným hnízdem vládce a vládkyně z Vampýrů, kteří prchají před pobočkou E a novým nekroskopem, Jakem Cutterem.
Musí lokalizovat teroristy, kteří ohrožují svět nukleárními zbraněmi; natrvalo zavřít bránu mezi upířím světem a zemí; analyzovat výtrusový mor; a vypátrat a zničit trojici vampýřích vládců.
