oh man. so...if we are made mostly of water, and the planet is mostly water, and water is the base of life......oh man. This guy really put a new twist on cellular organization from sound vibration for me. Simple, low tech....huge. We really should pay greater attention to how we treat our children.
You know, I think this book, and the reviews are good examples of some of the problems in both science and spirituality today.
The book does truly present something interesting to think about. Even if the theory doesn't mesh with you, the photography is interesting enough, and it never hurts to consider a new theory. But that's where I feel some of the problems begin. Specifically with the word "consider".
As some others have noted, the theory Emoto has created from his research does seem to have some rather large leaps from point A to point B. In my personal opinion, there is a lot of interesting information that Emoto has collected, but still not enough to really form a solid theory, so he tells the story he WANTS to tell (and that a lot of people want to hear). Could it be true? Maybe, who knows? But it seems like there should be a lot more tests done before making the claims that he does. But is the power of positive affirmation really so mysterious? Placebo/Nocebo effect is pretty well documented. Even if the mechanism for that effect is unknown.
On the other hand, from reading comments here, it's apparent that some people went into the book actively looking for any excuse to disprove anything and everything contained within. Basically a, "What!?! If I don't understand it, or it challenges my viewpoint of the world then it can't possibly exist!" kind of attitude. What a bitter irony that this is precisely the attitude science fought to escape during early clashes with the church.
So, coming back to the word "consider", I feel that this is a book that should be "considered"; Not completely accepted, and not discredited in an off hand way. It's a quick read, and interesting enough if you're not completely close minded.
Depending on your believes, it might be a fable read for one person or it might be an interesting read for another.
It is a fascinating read how the molecules of water are affected by our thoughts, words and feelings. Positive words create beautiful crystals. Negative words show distorted images.
Dr. Emoto conducts many different experiments, while taking thousands of pictures. Among them how for example heavy metal music creates distorted crystals and calm or classical music creates beautiful crystals.
“To understand water is to understand the cosmos, the marvels of nature, and life itself.
The words of love and gratitude form the most beautiful crystals. It was also noticed that the gratitude is more powerful than love. Conclusion give twice the amount of gratitude as love. That’s the balance you should strive for.
Through his research we can conclude how important positivity is.
A bizarre mixture of science, pseudo-science, self-help, time-honored religious philosophy and New Age twaddle. Emoto's methodology is suspect and his conclusions outre (e.g. in the caption for a photo of a crystal exposed to Brazilian music, Emoto contends that the crystal indicates that music and loud singing will strengthen the immune system). If you go into it thinking it's a scientific book containing valid information about water, you will be sorely disappointed. If you approach it as a philosophy text containing interesting thoughts about water...well, you'll still be disappointed, but it will be more interesting.
Many of us can feel that there really is magic in our world. Personal experience and perception are validating enough. If tests confirm some metaphysical concepts, I am glad. The sentience of plants is old news. It was no leap to consider water alive, thus I did not imagine giving The Hidden Messages In Water, 1999, three stars. I own the second book and hope Masaru Emoto’s wild extrapolations simmered down.
The implications of what he found he could verify visibly, are encouraging and staggering. We know something is sentient if we reach it emotionally. We affect any water, a lake or a glass, and receive a response matching the tones presented. A kind or critical word could be taped to a glass of water, a spoken word, music that is harmonious or harsh. When Masaru froze water and saw beautiful, full crystals or broken, incomplete crystals related to a positive or negative atmosphere; it revealed that water responds to us! He ponders the health possibilities, knowing that we and the Earth are 70% water. The medical potential of adding a sample of poison or illness to water, for conversion to a cure, is amazing!
This book abounds in photographs of vibrant or dull crystals and their stimuli. A few examples amply drive this evidence home. I loved the experiment of a large group of people who prayed beside a lake. The lake got cleaner in a brief length of time!
Afterwards, Masaru went amuck with broad conclusions. I am familiar with telepathy, energy healing... action generated by our hearts and minds. Moods and intentions are relative. Soft and hard music fuel our soul, according to how we feel. Sometimes rocking out energizes us. Sometimes soft music is melancholy. Masaru needs to reign in his conclusions to the valuable basics.
Utter amazement. A feeling of non-stop expansiveness. A necessity for always paying attention. love and understanding.
I felt all of this while reading this. WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS. Some proof that there IS something in existence, some force, SOMETHING, that we cannot fully explain or understand. The world is not made up of only our theories and equations in our textbooks!!! You cannot only view the world through the scientific method! Masaru Emoto has skillfully and wholistically bridged the gap between science and superreality (is that a word--superreality? something we can not understand..? the incredible perfectness of nature..?) Emoto measures scientifcally a force that has never been measured before. I can't even explain how amazing it is with these stupid little letters I type.
READ THIS BOOK. Please! For yourself and for your community and for humanity!
Ok, this book was just..eh. I had seen many of the water crystal photos before, although seeing them again is never a bad thing. It was the poor writing that got me with this book - I don't know if subtle nuances got lost in the translation to English, but it appeared to be geared towards middle school students, and was simple to the point of almost being insulting to the average reader.
The ideas that were presented in this book were widely varied, loosely connected, and rarely well developed. Did you know that all the water on earth came from gigantic 'lumps' of water that float around the universe and bombard our planet? Far-fetched, and it was taken for granted that the reader would just accept this fact and move on - without even a citation of the scientist who came up with this theory!
It was as if Emoto had no real purpose when he set out to write this book, and never, I don't know, outlined or anything. The disjointedness of it all would have made me put down a book any longer than this very short volume.
And the epilogue nearly killed me - if the rest of the book was a collection of random ideas, the conclusion was anything BUT a conclusion, but more like a barf-fest of all the random ideas he briefly mentioned, beat into the ground (all the world needs is love and gratitude), or more of his strange outer space talk...
Ok, now it's time for my pet peeve about this book...ready? I know, right? It's hard to believe I could possibly bitch more about a book that took me 2 hours to read...but he ACTUALLY SAID, AS A SCIENTIST, that we don't know how medicine works. Wait, say WHAT? REWIND - as an angry girl pharmacist-to-be, I'll grant that we're not exactly sure of the exact mechanisms of action of several classes of drugs out there, but WE MOST CERTAINLY KNOW HOW PENICILLINS INTERFERE WITH THE FORMATION OF BACTERIAL CELL WALLS!!!!! And believe me, after >3 years of anatomy and physiology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics and pharmacokinetics, we CERTAINLY know how SOME medicines work. I think that quote pretty much ruined the book for me.
Not really recommended reading, but borrow it from your library just to look at the cool pictures and see the effects that words and pictures can have on water samples. But take the captions with a grain of salt - a water sample that was exposed to the words "I hate you, I will kill you" formed crystals that are described as "looking like a man with a gun". REALLY? Oh, and water placed between speakers playing Argentinian tango music formed crystals indicating dancing couples. For real - he actually said that under the photo. This is like, the WORST SCIENCE EVER. *GAG*
Water Molecules do not Have Central Nervous System
The author of book claims that water gives good crystalline structure in response to good music, good (moral) words, good photos, and good contaminants (good for human health), whereas, in response to bad music, bad words, bad photos, or bad contaminants (bad for human health), water produces bad crystalline structure. Water is not an independent living being; it does not have central nervous system and hence it has no consciousness to respond to music (pages 43, 17-27), photographs (pages 33-36, 101-111), or written/spoken words (pages 5-15). Water is a simple polar molecule with some unique physical and chemical properties. It is a universal solvent that solvates (hydrates) macromolecules and some low molecular weight compounds under physiological conditions which confer some unique properties to these molecules. Water does not have any extraordinary properties that confer thought process to individual water molecules. The hidden message of water is its unique structure, simplicity and the chemical characteristics. Water is medium in which life is born, but oxygen is the molecule that supports life and provides energy.
Water/water vapor condenses into ice in shapes dictated by the geometry of molecules, rate of cooling; temperature, pressure, humidity, and motion/stirring of the liquid. Ice crystals range from simple faceted structures to complex branching networks. The physics of ice formation argue against the influence of music or written word on crystal shape. However the crystal formation is affected by the compounds dissolved in water (pages 113-132). Water obtained from different sources has different amounts of minerals, biological and organic molecules that accounts for the difference in the crystal formation, but crystal structure does not depend on their health effects. The experimental conditions used in this work are unscientific (pages xxi-xxv); appropriate control experiments (for example, studying ice crystal formation without the effect of written words or music) have to be performed side by side under identical conditions to eliminate the extraneous effects. In addition, the experiments have to be repeated few times to verify the repeatability of same ice crystal formation and calculate the statistical significance. Philosophical reasoning based on Vedic and Tantric philosophy or modern philosophy also precludes conferring consciousness to water molecules.
Several unscientific statements have been made about the universe and life, but I have not itemized them individually (see Prologue, and pages 38, 44, 46, 52, 58, 64, 66, 86). To learn more about scientific aspects of ice crystal formation, I recommend: The Snowflake by Kenneth G. Libbrecht; and Snow Crystals by W. A. Bentley and W. J. Humphreys.
reassured me that there's more to life, that harmony defines the Universe as our positive energies impact the far corners of the earth in magnificent, observable shapes and patterns in water. It's amazing to think that a subliminal feeling can express itself in a concrete shape so that we may capture the moments when the unseen resonates with life and shows itself in the physical realm. Happiness is truly beautiful.
3.5 stars I first became aware of Masaru Emoto's work when I saw the film, "What the Bleep Do We Know?!" -- a movie along the lines of "The Secret" (both highly recommended if you haven't seen them). Emoto's work expounds on the ideas of consciousness creating reality, and his photographs of crystals created by water exposed to ideas, music and prayers indicates, according to his theories, that water is a kind of living consciousness and mirror to the soul of all living creatures on earth. If this seems far-fetched, rest assured you're not the only one who's had this thought, but the book does present some interesting concepts about how much thought energy informs the world around us, societies and even the origins of life itself. I'd like to read his original "Messages in Water" books. This one was published after the original books came out and loses some focus when he delves into his thoughts of the future of scientific research and environmental politics. Still a good book -- a nice short read about some very big topics.
If Masaru Emoto sounds familiar, it's because he spoke about his findings on water crystals in the documentary "What the Bleep Do We Know?".
Emoto, in his book "The Hidden Messages in Water" goes into greater depth in his findings of water and its receptability.
In a nutshell, Emoto conducted quite a few experiments on water and how positive or negative energy affects it. Several experiments were conducted by people throughout the world, from writing words on pieces of paper and taping them to the water bottle, to chanting, praying, thanking, insulting or ignoring water. Everything from prayer to words to different kinds of music were exposed to the water which was then frozen. The water crystals were studied and the findings were amazing.
Masaru Emoto, like many other authors of this genre, preaches love, gratitude and respect for others and the environment around us, and shows us that even the most basic of substances has many secrets to tell and messages to bring.
The pictures included must be seen to be believed.
So next time, before you take that drink, tell your water "Thank you." and focus a little happiness into that cool glass. You'll be surprised at how it repays you.
This book is mind-blowing. I have wanted to read this for over ten years and finally have. Dr. Masaru Emoto, Japan, conducted various experiments with distilled, pure, and tap water and when the water formed water crystals, he added sound, music, words, EMF fields and exposed the water to various things we, as humans, experience all day. The results are monumental.
Our bodies are composed of 70% water. By exposing various kinds of water to negative and positive words, sights, sounds, the water crystals reacted. Imagine what we experience daily, yet do not realize the impact of our words, actions, behavior?
More importantly, the impact of the kind of water we drink, music we listen to, words we hear, think, speak and ones we do not, have a massive impact on our own bodies and those around us, including the planet and everyone in it.
Dr. Emoto began this as a personal experiment. What occurred was a six year observation that turned into global talks, conferences and the publishing of several books. This is a short volume explaining water, our bodies, photography, and the reason for the experiment.
This book includes some of his photography of the crystals. You will be shocked and pleased when you see how words, music, EMF, and negative and positive things affect water.
This is why it is crucial to be responsible for your words, behaviors, actions, environment and health. It not only affects you, it effects everyone associated with you and the planet as a whole.
Excellent experiment with photography. Dr. Emoto shows us how delicate words are. Say, “I am sorry, “I love you, “I care, “You are beautiful and tell people how much they matter to you.
The water that was ignored formed no crystals at all.
Expose yourself to beauty constantly.
Choose your words wisely, fill your body, mind, heart, spirit with goodness and be wary of those that speak to you in demeaning fashions.
If water crystals react within moments to negative and positive words, sounds, music, sights, and experiences, the human body reacts just as, if not more, intensely.
Do the unbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, and We split them apart? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not believe? (30) Surah al-Anbiya
Water is so fascinating to me, when I first watched an interview with Masaru Emoto around 2004 I hoped that I will find the book, years passed and I didn't but it popped into my mind frequently recently so I got the audible and Kindle editions. His work and research were beautiful to me. In Islam, our prophet Muhammad told us that when the world was first created there was water and Allah's throne on it, and there was mist, Allah created the pen and the book and told it to write the story of the world until the end. God tells us in this ayah that everything alive God created is by water. So water is alive and it's the secret of the world, and the first thing that was created. That's what this fascinating book confirms.
Masaru Emoto did many experiments on how the water would respond to sound, music, and words. When the music is well composed the formation is beautiful and unique, when the words are kind the crystals are so beautiful, when we say good words water becomes healing.
That obviously made me think of Islam, how we always say In the name of Allah the most Merciful before we eat or drink or have sex, to bliss whatever enters our bodies, and if we eat something bad or we feel fear we say I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. The power of the spoken words is immense.
It also made me think of ZamZam water in Mecca, our prophet peace be upon him told us that Zamzam is the best water in the universe خير ماء على وجه الأرض ماء زمزم، فيه طعام الطعم، وشفاء السقم it means you feel fulfilled when you drink it as if you've eaten and it heals the body, which means water can heal the body and that there is holly water which brings all religions together.
This book just made me feel happy. I was introduced to people studying things I'd never heard of before, and it questioned a few things I thought were true. The validity of the science is almost irrelevant: Just let that go. What Dr. Emoto has to say about love, gratitude and the beauty of the universe are words that will fill your soul with peace. He nails it. I wish I could read this whole book before I start each day; I know it'd help me be the human being I try to be day-to-day. The end was especially poignant now that he's tragically passed on.. I so wish I could've heard him speak once. His reverence for the Earth is something I wish for myself and everyone.. thank you Dr. Emoto... and thank you Earth!
Getting these 'messages' absolutely blew me away -- especially the sentence that says something to the effect of what we say to our children -- whose bodies are mostly water.
Made me very thankful that even without realizing what I was doing, I have always told my children they are the best and they have the ability to be and do whatever they choose in life.
Both of my children have happy lives, for which I am very thankful.
I have always believed that words have power and they like magic in our lives. The books starts off of how Masaru Emoto came across the idea of photographing water that has been exposed to different elements. He acquires ans assistant and the exploring begins. They test with words (in multiple languages), music and even television programs. Masaru and his assistant even test different types of waters from different locations. Publishers were not interested in this book of photographs initially. Masaru also goes on to explain how this relates to our bodies. How are bodies start off as 99% water as a fetus, then when we are born our body is 70% water with a steady slow decrease as we age.
The message is beautiful and supports my belief of words can change your life. If we treat ourselves with love and gratitude, we flourish and bloom. I loved the theory. The most beautiful crystal to me is the one which was exposed to the words red dragonfly (from a Japanese nursery rhyme) as the shapes even look like little dragonflies. Yes it is a pseudo science but life is so much more than facts. This a beautiful book filled with a beautiful message and beautiful pictures.
CRAP! This book is all nice and touchy-feely but have absolutely NO scientific explanation... no, actually, the explanation that he does have is worse than nothing! Emoto shows one photo of a crystal under certain circumstances... but does not mention that he even TRIES to take more than one photo under circumstances until 3/4 of the way through the book and he uses one paragraph... To me, this book was made of some very amazing pictures, and it just happened to coincide with a pretty message about thinking positively (which is something scientists have been telling us, but with little proof). I'm hoping something was lost in translation...
A very inspiring book... especially when we experience the lowest moment, truly it would enlighten our perspectives, beyond all our imagination, nourishing our mind and soul. Discover these messages.... and perhaps would reveal ours, things that we've taken for granted all this time and see the things that we never encounter in our thoughts. I believe, our own experiences all these years, have these hidden messages as we probably never realize them before.
Very interesting. My main concern is that the author himself suggests that the results of his water crystal experiments may not be able to be replicated. But, in my opinion, it's worth a read just the same.
Enjoyed listening to Massey Emoto’s The Hidden Messages in Water while painting in one sitting. Very relaxing and extraordinary information.
Having the print book with pictures is important to see what the author is describing which is of particular importance for context. What a joy to behold. True marvel. As Mr. Emoto describes his scientific discoveries on water and how this relates to their appearance and meaning.
One surprise portrayed through water is how it relates to people, language, and various happenstances.
Mr. Emoto explains how water reacts to city treatment systems meant to clean the water for consumers compared to other, like distilled and bottled, etc.
For example, when people are feeling angry the water changes shape. If you project the words love and gratitude similar impact.
The author goes in depth about his experiments and the transformative nature of the studies on wellness and impact on society.
Reading this book is coincidental to buying a ProOne filtration water system. Meant to restore nutrients and remove additives from city water like fluoride and chlorine to include lead, etc.
Upon hearing Dr Andrew Huberman speak recently on water and tap in particular learned the recommended limit for fluoride and looked up my city water. The local government adds more than the recommended amount for some odd reason.
This inspired me to ditch the Brita which only removed Chlorine and a few other things. Replace with a better system. ProOne has the best number of pluses and is a fantastic price comparative to any other I’d researched.
Found the exact unit and color on eBay from a seller with over 3011 five star reviews and none negative. At a better rate than anywhere else.
Sharing this filter system info in case you find yourself in a situation in need of a solution.
What I like most about the filter and the book is the opportunity to do my own experiments with water. Prior to the book have had some of the habits to encouraging healthy hydration. The book inspires me to go above and beyond to explore more.
Makes me happier than my original reasons for curiosity of the story. I’ve had the book and audio for a year. Finally caught up to tackle a stack of books on the TBR list.
The meaning is deeper considering my most recent research and acquisition to a new way to consume water.
Fantastic book. Worth rereading multiple times. Brilliant observations and helpful to improving one’s quality of life, in my view. Physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Peace in oneself Peace in the world ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
And, now “Peace in water 😁
Fun fact, “love and gratitude are the most influential benefit to water and quality. Read to find out why

More science fiction than science, the book has some good messages going, but the fact that crystals don't ever look the same (something he mentions in his book even) discredits his thought process somewhat. Nothing in the books makes me trust his experiments, especially when he says they cannot copy the same conditions for the experiments. Fail. His idea is enticing but it is a lot like these theories that tell you to send good thoughts out in the universe so you can be successful or anything in that line.
The epilogue was the kill shot to my second star. The fact that he mentioned that the liver filters the water we drink... (insert head shaking here). And that sometimes transfusions have been known to cause change in personality... Only thing I ever heard of causing a personality to change is brain damage. These statements made him come out as an ancient witch doctor, rather than anything else. If he stuck to the philosophical aspect of things, he might have had something going, but trying desperately to make it look like a scientific endeavor detracted a lot from the book and his credibility.
I am no scientist, but I am interested in science and information and I seek to learn as much as I can. I like philosophy too and I like to read thought provoking ideas. This book though, struck me as a waste of time because it was trying to link something with what looks like pseudo-science and not a valid theory.
The pictures of crystals in the book are beautiful, his message that he totally skipped in the epilogue is very relevant and universal. Love and gratitude are exactly what go missing when conflicts, greed and entitlement enter the picture.
A great idea to start from, but it went on wild tangents that ruined it.
A lot of people had read this at Mystery School and were raving about it, so I went home and read it. And my opinion of the book as a whole was affected by the fact that while I was in the middle of it, the tsunami happened. Kind of made his assertions about how we can heal and control water through "love" and "gratitude" seem pretty childish and naive.
After finishing I felt the science was not explained to my satisfaction. However, I was profoundly moved by the ideas and the photographs. I am a firm believer that what you put out into the world effects all things. So it makes sense to send out positive energy. Love and gratitude alone can change the world one little moment at a time.
Contrary to what this book purports, the answers to the world's problems, all your personal problems, and to the questions of life are not contained in water. The unscientific, illogical and downright misleading conclusions reached by Emoto prey on ignorance and those people looking for an easy answer. There are no answers here.
i keep this around for random readings. it inspires me to monitor my thoughts and feelings for craziness & fix that. the images are fantastic reminders that thought/intention and emotion are power and that they create my world.
