As former Boston cops, Drake Matthews and Alison Monroe thought they had experienced it all... until they found themselves tracking down a serial killer who turned out to be one of the undead. Stopping him cost them their careers and almost their lives. Thanks to an influential and anonymous benefactor, Drake and Alison find a new job ridding the streets of Washington D.C. of the vampiric threat terrorizing the nation's capital. Only this time, Drake and Alison are not facing a single vampire but an entire nest led by Ion Zielenska, one of history's most evil and twisted masters. As the vampires indiscriminately prey on humans, seeing them as nothing more than food to satiate their hunger, they create a wave of violence that threatens to engulf the city. Orchestrating the carnage is Antoinette Varela, the mistress of the nest, who realizes that for the nest to survive the hunters must be eliminated. However, when her vendetta turns personal, the hunters find themselves in struggle they are not prepared for.

Bloody good vampire action horror. The vamp hunters are in over their heads, but they managed to kick some vampire butt. The vampires are depraved, disgusting, black-hearted, and ruthless--real monsters! This book is not for the squeamish, but it wasn't so gross I couldn't stand it. Mr. Baker did a great job of building and sustaining the suspense, and the villains were three-dimensional, if nasty. I definitely need to read the two sequels.
Long review will be posted on the Bitten by Books website (in the future): .
I started reading The Vampire Hunters by Scott Baker yesterday and I could not put it away!!! What a ride!! The story brought me back to the days when I was waiting anxiously to see the next Buffy the vampire slayer episode!!! You get a real vampire hunter team, the fearless macho with a soft core Drake Matthews and his smart and strong partner Alison, who is the definition of girl power, because let me tell you, the lady kicks some serious vamp ass into dust. The vampires are vicious monster, you don't get any vampire romance, just a bit of tension between Drake and the beauty Alison.. Thing are already complicated when the Louis Lane type reporter Jesica enters the scene.. The coven master, Ion, decides that she will be his new Queen.. Can Drake save her before she becomes one of the Undead??? Check it out.. I can't wait to start reading the next book in the series..
Now this is a book that is not a vampire adventure; rather, it is a throat-busting reimagining of the undead, in a contemporary setting. Baker has written a fist-clenching, thrill-tingling, neck-hair-raising runaway car of a book that engages, excites and exhilarates the reader.
While urban vampire books are by no means new, Baker’s vampires, are not charming or misunderstood and do not suffer the angst of being partly human. No, his vampires are monsters that kill and maim and never say sorry.
The book is driven by his hero (Drake) and heroine (Alison) a pair of lapsed Washington cops who have seen it all, REALLY seen it all Joined by a Techie with a Past, they make up a team that takes on some vampires with a past a loooong past reaching back centuries.
As always, humour is important to me and Baker shows his flair for dialogue with the banter between Drake and Alison, diffusing the pressure mounting on the team that is trying to save the lives of an entire city.
All in, a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and second-best of all is that it is the first book in a trilogy.
Best of all? How can someone not love a book where the swashbuckling hero has a pet bunny?
If you’re into bad ass, I'll tear your throat out and spit it back at you, followed with twisting your head in a 160 degree angle type vampire, this is your book!! It started out with a high speed action packed; get that mo-fo snuffy!! I was jumping up and down while they tried to get them, and covering my eyes with all the gore. Drake was awesome, I kind of seen myself pushing him over to light my own cigar and pour my own bakers. Alison was a bad mama jamma and Jim was really nifty with the gadgets, I would so be down to kill some stinky vamps. Hopefully Jessica gets what she wants in book two, she might have comp. Hmmm :) Awesome ending Ion gave me the creeps and can’t wait to read the next one. I’m definitely a Vampires Hunter fan.

More than any other 'monster' in literary history, the vampire has experienced a significant evolution (not to mention bastardization) over the last few decades. It has been romanticized, eroticized, moralized, and humanized, until what was once a straightforward staple of horror fiction has become a genre all on its own. It used to be that you knew what to expect when somebody handed you a vampire book, but now you're just as likely to get a watered-down, young adult, faith-fuelled romance as you are a decent thriller.
Call me a traditionalist, but I'll take the good guys hunting bad vamps any day of the week - which is precisely where The Vampire Hunters comes in. In case you couldn't tell by the title, Scott M. Baker has crafted a 'classic' vampire tale, one where a pair of ex-cops and their ex-criminal sidekick must do battle with creatures from the wrong side of the crypt.
Drake and Alison are your typical vampire-hunter heroes, out-matched and out-muscled by their supernatural foes, and mistrusted and misunderstood by their human colleagues. They're well-developed, with just enough background details to carry the story along, and a solid working relationship that flirts with just the right amount of romantic tension. It's James who really brings the team to life, though, a late addition who fulfills the standard role of armourer/apprentice, but who has a back story worthy of its own book. There's even a mysterious benefactor, one with enough money and power to keep the team safe from police interference, and a crack journalist, slumming with a tabloid rag in search of her big break, to round out the human element.
Similarly, Ion and Toni are your typical vampires, centuries old lovers-turned-rivals who are more interested in vengeance than in self-preservation. It's their back story that really brings the story up an extra notch, establishing not just their supernatural existence, but their cruel behaviour. The early flashback where they escape a horde of WWII flamethrower-carrying soldiers, in a stolen Russian tank no less, is precisely where I went from reader to fan. Toni carries much of the present day action, but the spectre of Ion is always there, ready to rear his ugly head at the right moment.
In terms of action, this is a kick-ass tale that borrows from the best of action, thriller, and horror genres. The early chase scene, with Drake clinging tenaciously to the back of a vampire-driven tanker truck, is nothing but pulse-pounding fun until its fiery end. Not to be outdone, there is a crazy, claustrophobic, paranoid battle within a darkened theatre that concludes up the tale, one which probably carries on a bit too long, but which keeps the reader absolutely breathless until the sun comes up.
There were some definite twists to the story that surprised me but, for the most part, this was exactly what I was expecting - a solid, enjoyable tale of ordinary heroes out to exterminate the vampires preying upon their city. Violent, gruesome, and vulgar where it needs to be, The Vampire Hunters is clearly a book where the author had as much fun in the writing as we do in the reading.
The book starts out with action from the beginning and keeps on going through out the book. I was captivated from the beginning and enjoyed the whole book.
Drake Matthews is an ex-cop along with Alison Monroe. Drake was kicked off the police force when he was tracking down a serial killer and it turned out to be a vampire. How was he going to explain to the chief it was a vampire. But the damage was done. Alison was his new partner at the time and resigned at the same time.
Drake was contacted by a wealth benefactor who were supply Drake and Alison whatever they needed to take out a "Nest" of vampires that had set up in Washington, D.C. It was Drake's job to find the nest and destroy it. Not only was this not just one vampire like the serial killer, this was many undead that was lead by two of the ferious masters in history, Ion Zielenska and Antoinette Varela the mistress of the nest.
The two hunters had their work cut out for themselves. The benefactor sent the hunters a young man, Jim who was creative to be part of the hunter's team. His job was to create new weapons that woud make it easier to take out many vampires as they fought.
To make matters worse, Jessica Reynolds, a reporter from "The Washington Standard", started snooping around as to why Drake and Alison that had several charges against them when taking down an undead came out of jail with the charges drop.
Her investigations lead her to become an interest to Ion. He needed to get rid of her. Drake, Alison, and Jim get into many dangerous situations in taking down the undead nest. It's a thrilling story that keeps you on edge most of the time.
I really enjoyed reading this book and now I have to get the second book in the series!
I was excited to read a vampire novel where they weren’t your friend, lover, sparkly buddy, but good old-fashioned bloodsucking fiends. Unfortunately, that excitement quickly waned the deeper I got into the book.
The novel has Drake Matthews, ex-cop turned vampire hunter taking on a nest of vampires in Washington DC.
My first issue with the book was a flashback told from the point of view of one of the two master vampires in the story where they are in Ukraine in 1932 on the run from Russian NKVD. The NKVD squad brought along a T-34 tank to take down the vampires. The problem is the T-34 didn’t go into production until 1940 and therefore didn’t exist in 1932. That may seem like a minor gripe, but the Soviets having T-34’s in 1932 would have seriously changed world history.
The author at the back of the book, mentioned the book was originally published in 2009 and this version was the fourth edition. It defies belief that the book could have gone through four revisions and the author didn’t catch the T-34 error.
The characters were two dimensional and predictable. Drake is a man’s man who jumps into action without really thinking about it. His partner is described as beautiful, smart, and capable, yet needs to be rescued because she only keeps bringing wooden stakes to vampire encounters when there were much better options available to her.
I struggled to finish this book. I did like Drake’s pet rabbit; it added a bit of depth to his character. The action scenes were decent. The book kind of reminded me of a Michael Bay movie it can be fun if you don’t think too hard about it.
These vampire are powerful and dangerous. Makes me wonder how long just luck will hold out so that Drake and Alison would not be defeated by the vampires. Just the fact that the vampire can regenerate and heal while Drake and Alison cannot, leaves you wondering how long they will be able to fight back and survive. The story is fast paced with no slow drawn out sections. Detailed fight scenes and grisly behaviors are sprinkled throughout, so if that isn't your thing this might not be a book for you.
Bite Me If You Dare This was an action packed ride through Washington D.C. The reading was fast paced, the vampires scary, and the plot makes you wonder. Who would believe it, would you want to believe it, this book makes you think. The interaction between the characters, their pasts, and you want to know if they survive and have a future. Well this is just the beginning. If you read it, you will want more. But be careful if you read this on the Metro Fangs Up.
Holy Water the new to die for perfume! Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2020 Loved this book, would only recommend for adults due to language and brutal sexual comments. Anyway this was a fast pace with lots of action book. It is the first in the series. This is a new take on vampires, the author created characters that you root for and hope they make it. Read the books and leave your reviews. Thank you for using Kindle Unlimited
This is a great start to why I hope is a long long series. I truly enjoyed the storyline and the characters came to life from page one. I couldn't stop reading till I finished, stayed up way way past my bedtime because I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more.
This was a pretty good read. My first book from this author & I wasn’t disappointed. The vampires are mean & the hunters are good. I love that we get a back story on the vampires. I quite enjoyed this book, I look forward to reading the next in the trilogy & I love the rabbit. It’s a good read, but don’t take my word for it....READ IT.
I really like how the story flowed. The characters and their back stories were really good. I like how this was written and looked forward to reading more.
Really enjoyed the book and am reading book 2 Love the characters the book reminds me of and has a bit of a Buffy feel and Yes I actually watched and enjoyed the show lol
This is the third book read by the author, and once again wasn't disappointed. A worthwhile, fast paced vampire novel with interesting characters. Now onto the second part of this series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Drake Matthews is an annoyance to the police. He has been in D.C. for about three months now and has caused more trouble than the police chief knows how to handle. Especially since every time he thinks he has caught Drake, and that he will be behind bars soon, a very powerful and mysterious benefactor puts pressure on the mayor. Getting all of the charges for Drake and his partner Alison Monroe dropped.
What the police are not willing to accept is the truth. That Drake and Alison are vampire hunters and have been ridding the city of a coven for the last few months. However they still have not found the master yet, only ‘snuffy vampires—basically vampire cannon fodder for the master’s.
The master’s are very aware of them however, only once before has the main master of the vampire coven come across such a dangerous hunter, and soon they set out to rid themselves of the hunters once and for all.
Add into the melee a new vampire hunter added to the group who is an engineering-weapon-making-genius, a beautiful, nosy reporter, a bunny named Van Helsing and you have on very interesting vampire novel to say the least!
Wow, was this something new for me. I admit that I am all for the sexy vampire’s in books. The one ones with a toured past but shows he really cares later on with the love of a good woman. ;)
The Vampire Hunters is nothing like that. Vampires are evil and have absolutely no redeeming qualities in this series and our man characters are dedicated Hunters out to rid the world (or in this case Washington, D.C.) of them.
It. Was. Really. Good. I am most definitely going to be picking up book two ASAP!
Honestly, and it was a wonderful surprise because I have only read one or two other books where vampires were not sexy and redeemable so I was not sure how much I was truly going to enjoy The Vampire Hunters. It kind of reminded me of Buffy the Vampire, actually. I have never watched that show much myself and our main guy is well, a guy (though there s a main girl as well) but I think I connected it to the Buffy show because of how the vampires look. Others might now see any connection there though.
The only things that bothered me would have to be how the book switches to the past a couple times. It really confused me at first because there is nothing that really indicates it is switching to the past, that we are 'in' the past at those times.
Secondly was how, mostly in the beginning of the book, Drake did not really seem to be good at fighting the vampires. It seemed that Alison was better at it, which is fine of course but since Drake felt more like the main character, and he was supposed to be scary to the vampires, to me it kind of bothered me that he was mostly just getting his butt kicked. Lol However, that did change later on in the book and he does hold his own.
The Vampire Hunters is filled with fight scenes, and gory deaths so not for those who are squeamish but I would highly recommend The Vampire Hunters to anyone who likes a vampire novel where the vampires are the bad guys.
*I received a hardcover/paperback/eBook copy/ARC of this book for free to review from the author/publisher/tour site; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.
First, you have to know that if you are looking for the handsome, mysterious, sparkly vampires then this is the wrong book for you. However, if you are like me and love vampires in every since of the word then this book will satisfy your blood thirst.
This is not your run of the mill mysterious sparkly vampire kind of book. No, this is the rip your throat out, blood everywhere kind of vampire book. Which I happen to love vampires in any and all forms! This book surprised me because I wasn't sure whether or not I would honestly like it but I am not the kind of person to not give a book a chance. I am happy to say that I loved this book, the characters and I have found a new favorite author.
The Vampire Hunters starts out with Drake Matthews and Alison Monroe on the hunt for a vampire that has strayed from the usual haunts these vampires like to hunt in. Drake ends up on the back of a tanker truck barrowing down the highway with a vampire driving and taking everything and everyone out in the process. Alison is following right behind trying to get to Drake before he falls off, the vampire rams the truck into something killing Drake or it turns over, exploding killing Drake. Like I said, major action and the book does a much better job describing what is going on. lol
I found this book action packed, fasted paced and incredibly hard to put down. I was caught up in every page of the book wanting to know more about this mysterious and anonymous benefactor that keep Drake and Alison out of trouble but also Ion Zielenska and Antoinette Varela who are the master vampires and the ones whom are wreaking havoc all over the streets of Washington D.C. I also loved the details in which the author used when describing what someone looked like to how the vampire ripped someone’s throat out. It was as if I was watching everything happen or watching a movie play out. Now, I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. Yes, this book has a lot of gore and if you aren't into that kind of thing then you might not be into this book. However, if you do give it a chance (and I highly recommend you do) you won’t be grossed out or disappointed. To me it was nothing worse than watching some of the television shows on now or something of that effect.
All I have to say is that this book was totally kick butt and I really can’t wait to read the second book and I highly recommend you read this one too, especially if you love a bloody good vampire book.
*Disclosure Notice* I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my personal and honest review. I was not compensated in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed herein are my own.
If you are looking for Edward Cullen or even Frank Langella, go directly to romance section and do NOT collect this book. This book is Horror plain and simple. Like the Vampire legends of old, Scott Baker delights in tormenting us. This really is your father's Vampire novel.
This book has three elements that would usually keep me from reading it,
It's a horror book and It's an honest vampire story. Oh and to make matters worse, it's part of the Vampire Hunters Trilogy so once you get sucked in you are actually compelled to read the entire series.
So what brought it to my attention? I am a fan of the wonderful mind of Scott M. Baker. So I stepped into the fray.. and while I am still digesting many aspects of this book, I must say it was a brilliant ride.
Drake Matthews and Alison Monroe are Vampire Hunters set on cleaning up his world and taking out the trash.. Unfortunately their way of dealing with things is in direct contrast to their jobs at the Boston PD, so they are forced to leave. Fortunately for them a job offer comes from a mysterious source in DC. They are asked to clean up the streets and make it safe. By doing this they must face not a single vampire but an entire nest.
A Nest, doesn't that sound sort of sweet? Yeah NOT.. it is lead by Ion Zielenska, one of history's most evil and twisted masters (yeah go big or stay at home). It seems Drake and Alison can't just get a break because not only was Ian the biggest and the baddest, his ladylove (yeah that's the term for her) the mistress of the nest has a vendetta out for mankind..
The problem with this book, besides the fact that it is fast paced, well written with little bits of humor stuck within it's pages, is the fact that it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it. I was afraid to turn the next page and more afraid not to. It kept me up at nights and worse made me, an avowed Vampire and Horror hater, want to purchase the next books. Ok, not want NEED to purchase them. It was that good!
Do I recommend this book? Yeah, I really do.. will I read another of Scott's books yes, I really have to.. My poor mind will never be the same.. But as I said before I am in love with the way Scott Baker's brain works.. ok, so it scares me just a little but what a gift!

Vampires, hunters and a rabbit named Van Helsing take the center stage in Scott M. Baker's paranormal thriller The Vampire Hunters. With well developed characters, a fast pace and lots of action, I found myself glued to the world Mr. Baker created. Using the classic battle between good and evil, humanity versus the vile undead, The Vampire Hunters, is a classic gothic tale in the vein of Dracula by Bram Stoker.
This tale begins in the midst of action as we are introduced to Drake Matthews and Alison Monroe in the middle of a vampire hunt. As the action continues we see how determined they both are to take down the "snuffy" or regular vampire and eventually locate the "master" who is creating the monsters in Washington D.C. Fiercely loyal, honorable and dedicated to their cause, neither Drake nor Alison will allow anything as trivial as getting arrested get in their way. After all, they have a secret champion in their corner who always gets them off. Mr. Baker did an excellent job introducing us to both characters; with flashbacks and through commentary from secondary characters we learn how Drake and Alison left their jobs as Boston cops and began their own "consulting" business in D.C. We also learn how they became friends and about Alison's secret attraction to Drake her boss. Keeping their relationship platonic is a good decision at this point.
Mr. Baker soon introduces us to the two true "villains" of the tale, Ion Zielenska and Antoinette "Toni" Varela, two "master" vampires who are centuries old. Former lovers, Ion and Toni are now somewhat engaged in a power struggle to see who will really rule their "nest". Both depraved beyond belief, their existence is an anthema to human existence - they have no value for humans other than as sport or food. Even though their power struggle should give the hunters an advantage it makes Toni's vendetta personal and takes the fight to a higher level. Providing us with insight into both vampires through flashbacks to their pasts, Mr. Baker almost humanizes his villains, it's only their total depravity that kept me from feeling some sympathy for their situation in life.
When the battle between the hunters and the vampires escalates will Drake and Allison be prepared to take it to the next level? And will the secondary characters we meet along the way help them or hurt them in the long run? You'll have to read The Vampire Hunter's to find out. I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Vampyrnomicon to see where Mr. Baker takes the battle next.
Drake Matthews is a former cop who loves what he does. He fights for justice and makes sure the undead remain dead. With his trusty sidekick, Alison Monroe, by his side, he's at the top of the world. Unfortunately, the Boston police department doesn't feel the same way he does.
Drake's a thorn in their side they can do without. With his unruly shenanigans in making sure to do away with vampires, he's become a sort of celebrity amongst the men in blue. They're aware of his notoriety and would do anything to curb his antics at every turn. Sadly, that's easier said than done.
His need to eliminate the undead, once and for all, cost him and Alison their jobs. Yet Drake is unwilling to admit defeat and he sure as heck will not let them win. Granted, there's a good many out there that would like to see him dead, but that's a luxury he will never give them.
Unexpectedly hired to take out a nest of the undead, Drake thinks he's hit the jackpot. In his mind, he can kill two birds with one stone and rid the city of those pesky vampires. Things might be going dandy for the two of them, but they're not even close in deciphering as to who the nest's master is. At times, he wonders if it would be best to give up, to let things be and move on. Yet something deep inside keeps him from doing just that.
A lead on who the master might be lands him and Alison in the seat of trouble. Part of him wonders if the two of them will get out of things unscathed. Yet he knows he can't let things lie as they are. He needs to know who's pulling their strings if they're to succeed with the mission they've been given. As tensions mount and the body count rises, Drake knows he'll need to find a solution to the problem, fast. Someone's definitely out to get him and whoever it is isn't afraid to make that fact known. One way or another, he'll need to set all wrongs to right if he's to save his beloved city in the long run.
This was one of those books that you just can't put down. Fast paced and full of action, the story hooks you in from the moment you flip the first page. Granted, there's a lot of violence within its pages, but it's definitely a story that keeps you engaged. This isn't your ordinary vampire story, mind you. Each twist and turn will keep you captivated until the very end. It's a book that's very much worth reading.
The Vampire Hunters is the first book in the Vampire Hunters Trilogy by Scott M. Baker. You won't find any cuddly, sparkly vampires in this book. These vampires are monsters.
The story takes place in Washington DC. I'm not going to say anything about that city already being filled with blood suckers. The joke is too easy. I do wonder why Baker chose that city. Our heroes are a couple of ex-cops who discovered the existence of vampires while working a serial murder case. At the end of that case, they are recruited by an unknown benefactor to hunt down and destroy the nest in Washington.
It's a decent story. Nice to see vampires as evil again. It's also interesting to see the heroes dealing with the aftermath of fighting vampires in a world that doesn't believe they exist.
As usual, I do have a few nitpicks.
The head vampire is a man named Ion Zeilenska. The name bothered me because the character was supposedly Bulgarian. Historically, Bulgarian names have different suffixes depending on gender. Zeilenska is female. I had to stop and re-read the chapter because I was confused. His name should have been Zeilenskov.
The second nitpick has to do with holy water. Supposedly religious places or symbols do not bother vampires. Holy water, on the other hand, can hurt them quite a bit. This makes no sense to me. You can't pick and choose - okay, you can because it's fiction but it's not logical. Water is only holy in connection to religious places, symbols and ceremonies. If none of those things bother vampires the water shouldn't either.
The last nitpick has to do with vampire hunter Alison Monroe. She refuses to take any weapons other than a couple of stakes. It's stupid and dangerous. She almost gets killed twice. The second time she's only saved by having put holy water on her neck. Which shouldn't have worked (see nitpick two). Having a person like her on a team is dangerous.
Is it just me or does Alison on the cover look like Olivia from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit?
So lemme start by say YAY!!!! KILL THE VAMPERS!!! Lol you guys know I’m partial the to werewolves and normally don’t side with the bloodsuckers lol so this book was SO PERFECT for me! It’s horror/urban fantasy and it’s fast, action packed, crazy scary good!! I literally was riveted and clutching my blanket reading this because the first chapter is EXPLOSIVE!! Literally best action opening scene!! Think Die Hard meets Dracula- the original- meets Charlie’s angels, without the heel wearing chicks!! LOL
So Drake is bad ass, I don’t think there’s another way to say this! And he’s an animal lover!! what’s not to love and he’s a human who kills vampires- yep I’m in lust!! Allison is just a cool chick, who’s also bad ass just in a different way! This is really such an interesting and unique story with a crazy plot! So many things I didn’t see coming!!
meanwhile, there’s the human cops who want nothing more than to bring Allison and drake to justice for things they think they’ve committed. But is it really murder to kill the undead who will eat you in less than a second? And I can’t believe the amount of stress and pain that these kids endure! Well they are adults but you know what I mean
if you were looking for sparkly lovable vampers, you’re in the wrong place! These vampires are NOT IN ANY WAY nice! Hell, they aren’t even nice smelling! Ammonia and putrified meat- gag me with a large wooden spoon!! Ick!! And then there’s Jessica, who’s a journalist assigned to uncover everything about Drake. She really just wants to make it in life but sometimes that’s not the best plan LOL But I like her character too
I will say this- Mr Baker, thank you for the gory, action packed, fantastic, seat defying, thrill ride!! And thanks for putting vampires back to the crazy house!! Lol I like shiny things, just not undead vamps I have a feeling I may get punched or mauled soon by my vamper loving friends real soon! Hahaha 5 PAWS!!
Before starting this book, I kept thinking Buffy and her little gang of vampire hunters. I know, I know and I loved Buffy (while she was in high school) What I got was a fast paced thriller that is not for the faint of heart. Its a ride that leaves you breathless and wanting more in the end.
Allison and Drake are former cops that are move to Washington DC to hunt and kill vampires. Through well developed backstory, you understand how they came to be vampire hunters. There is a small hint of Allison’s attraction to Drake that I hope is developed more in the later books. I’m a sucker for romance…even in a thriller. Mr. Baker has created a world that is fascinating as its horrible. The vampires are truly evil and vile. There are no sparkly vammpires in Washington. Only the depraved vampires exist in this world. We are introduced to the two most evil vampires that I’ve ever seen. Former lovers/vampires, Ion and Toni are fighting for totaly rule in their nest. I almost felt something for them reading their backstory but reality pulled me back in and wouldn’t let me.
The plot and pacing are well developed and there is never a dull moment. The action scenes are brutal but necessary. Its a thriller dear readers, not a paranormal romantic suspense. Its good versus true evil and the battle that ensues. Graphic, with dead on dialogue, I finished this book in a day. I thought about it the next day and wrote the review. It left me thinking of what would happen if this world truly existed. I didn’t like what I thought but that was the point of reading. What if?
Watch out for a rabbit named Van Helsing. That’s all I’m going to say about that. I know, tease that I am. I can’t wait for the rest of this series. Thought provoking, horrible but truly fascinating in a twisted way.
*I received this book as part of a blog tour for a fair and honest review*
"To Tiffany, Something to sink your fangs into. - Scott Baker"
What better way to start a read than with words that turned out to be true indeed. Look for romaticizing of these vampires, Baker shows them at their gruesome, deadly best. While I do love PNR, I also need a good dose of vampires in the purest, rawest form. The Vampire Hunters truly fit the bill. Readers will be taken into a dark world where the only standing between humanity and the undead are three unlikely heroes, and their mysterious, powerful, extremely influential benefactors'.
When seemingly a serial killer stalks the streets of Boston, only one detective, Drake Matthews, realizes what they're up against is something far worst, a vampire. Though he accepts the truth one family too late. While Matthews finally excepts the impossible, and in the process probably saving more than a few more lives, his superiors nor his colleagues were ready to acknowledge such, costing him his badge. None, that is, other than his partner, Allison Monroe. Who follows Drake to rid the streets of Washington D.C. as they are overran by a particular nasty, sadistic vampire nest. A nest led by two Masters' who take depravity to brand new levels. So when "Mr. Smith" drops off a new recruit on Drake's doorstep it is none too soon. Seeing as how Jim specializes in creating new and even more powerful weapons to use in the war against the undead.
A Fangtastic read for traditional vampires everywhere, regardless of gender. Action packed with fight scenes so vividly detailed readers will feel as though they are right there taking part in the action. Filled with blood, gore, thrills and chills to make every horror lover smile.
The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a copy of The Vampire Hunters from the author for a review via Innovative Online Book Tours.
I don't usually read books that are about the vampire hunters but the ones that are about vampires. You know like where the vampires are like the good guys or can be. They can pass as human as long as they don't show their fangs. And the heroine of the story falls in love with the vampire. Well this story is not like that not where the girl falls in love with the vampire. No this vampire story is about the girl hunting the vampires to kill them.
Drake and Alison are the vampire hunters they are former cops that worked for the Boston police department. They lost their jobs and almost their lives chasing down a vampire that they thought was a serial killer. But things work out for Drake and Alison after they lose their jobs. They are hired by an unknown to move and work in Washington, D.C. to track down and kill not one vampire but a whole coven of vampires.
I never thought that I would actually like reading a book about vampire hunters. I always want to read books where the vampires can be the good guy too. Where they can live as human most of the time and fall in love with the heroine. Well as long as there is not too much romance involved. I like my books to have a lot of action and at least a good story plot. But you know what? I have just found out that I do like reading about the hunters as well. I can't wait to get started on reading the 2nd book Vampyrnomicon.
I have read a lot of vampire and werewolf books, but most of them fall into the romance category. The Vampire Hunters is not a romance, though there is a hint of romance buried in it. This story is based on the older non-romanticized vampires, i.e. it is a horror story. I normally do not like horror stories at all. This one intrigued me, and I have to say that I am happy to have read it. It was very well written and very entertaining without giving me nightmares. I notoriously have nightmares from anything (music, movies, books) from the horror genre.
The story is about two vampire hunters that were once Boston Police. After a high profile case that they discovered to be about a vampire and not a serial killer, they were forced to leave the force. However, their ability to handle/kill vampires drew the attention of some unknown and very powerful person. They were hired by the unknown person to go to Washington D.C. to wipe out a coven of vampires. Drake and Alison are slowly taking out vampires but no closer to finding the master until a reporter by the name of Jessica starts looking into Drake's background. Her investigation somehow spurs the vampire master to set up a trap to try to kill the hunters. Will this trap succeed? Will Jessica die in the process? Will Drake be forced to kill vampires for the remainder of his life? Why does a vampire hunter have a pet rabbit? All of these questions and more will be answered when you read this story.
The Vampire Hunters is a bit of a throwback to what vampires were meant to be. They are ruthless, vicious monsters, not anti-heroes filled with teenage angst. Yes, I am referring to Twilight. That’s how they are portrayed here, and portrayed quite well. In this novel, Drake Matthews and Allison Monroe, after getting the boot from the Boston Police Department, are working for a mysterious and powerful benefactor. The benefactor in this case had a bit too much pull for my liking to the point where it was a little unbelievable. They are now in the nation’s capital, trying to root and destroy a vampire nest.
In this novel, there are two types of vampires, the snuffies, which are pretty useless, and the masters, who are more powerful. One point of contention that I had with the vampires, was that I didn’t feel that even the masters were powerful enough for my liking. They didn’t have the preternatural skills that makes vampires what they are. In particular, in a flashback, Toni, one of the masters, is nearly killed in Revolutionary France, and came off as being weak. But that’s a personal preference of mine. What the book had in abundance is lots of action and a fast pace. The protagonists are well-developed characters. I also really enjoyed the gadgets that Drake’s team developed to fight against the vampires. They were innovative and different. Overall, this was a strong read. If you’re a vampire fan like myself, you will enjoy this novel.
