Cannibals and Vampires and lots of tantalising human flesh ready to be eaten in a supermarket. Just kidding ......not. This story had all that and more. It had a very slow pace but the ending twist made it better. The environment was eerie and description of the supermarket "goodies" was deliciously grotesque, pun intended lol. I enjoyed it.
Something in the dark - Novella 2 stars. 🖤🖤
It was a paranormal horror story. I don't like those tropes. It wasn't the novella, it was me. End of.
Apartment 11 - Short story (20 pages max) 5 stars 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I don't know if it was the story itself or the way it was written - Raging and controlled. Calculated and insane. But it was absolutely terrifying. I got goosebumps from a 20 page horror story and that fact in itself is fucking incredible.
Milk - Novella 2 stars 🖤🖤
When It ended, my reaction was "Eh". So it's safe it say it was just okay-ish.
First time reading Michael Bray and it was a really good intro into his work. I really loved his writing and the plots his stories. I can't wait to read of writings. I'll try on of his novels next.
If you like terror, then Michael Brays Box of Terror is the Boxset for you. A ton of perfect horror stories that are scary enough and short enough to read in one sitting. Milk will leave you thinking.
Box of Terror contains four stories. The first one immediately drew me in. I liked the writing and the content was interesting - a man finds himself inside a supermarket that sells a different assortment of food than other supermarkets and it was too late to escape the second he entered the store but he will stop at nothing to return to his family. Then I found the story dragged on and I wasn't as invested as I was at the first, but overall this one was good.
The second story started off good, I liked the concept - a family has just moved to the middle of nowhere and they keep losing their power and the man stays and waits for the repairman while his wife and child go to stay with her mother before it gets dark. But then the author started to lose me with those made up words and I also found this one too long.
I did not like the third story - a man hides himself away from the world and is obsessed with numbers. In no way did this one interest me.
I did like the fourth story - a boy is excited to start school again after the summer, hoping the school bully will leave him alone but he doesn't and the boy wants revenge.
So overall not a bad read for me but it wasn't great either.
This was my first encounter with Michael Bray and I just loved everything about this box set! The stories had some kind of 80’s B-movie feel to them without being ridiculous or campy at all. They felt fresh and fun and were exciting and macabre at the same time! They made me feel like a fascinated kid again. The monsters were fantastically imaginative and out there, but it all worked wonderfully because the writing is so superb! The stories flows smoothly and never get tired or boring for a minute. I just wish there had been more stories to the book. This will definitely not be my last book by Mr Bray. Looking forward to my next read!
Box of Terror was my first time reading anything by Michael Bray. The first story, Meat, is an interesting take on vampires. Mister Bray's descriptions are usually pretty good, but his dialogue comes off as clunky and rather unrealistic at times. That is an issue that extends to the other three stories as well. Coupled with a handful of syntax errors and a lot of superfluous, repetitive lines, Box of Terror seems mostly in need of a good editor. That said, the stories are fun for what they are, it's a quick read, and the collection is rather cheap on Kindle.
This Box of Terror by Michael Bray is a collection of four short stories, each of which is original in its own right. Bray has created tales that keep the reader in suspense until the last page. The author's writing style seemed a little minimalistic compared to some of the horror heavyweights, but the storylines kept me engrossed. The action was nicely paced, and the characters were fun getting to know. All in all, a fun little read.
I absolutely loved this set of stories. Just the right amount of terror and gore. If you have a weak stomach, then these stories may not be for you. For me, these stories, especially the first one, reminded of Stephen King. I was pulled in from the very beginning. They are very well written and will definitely haunt me for awhile. I highly recommend.
This box set contains the kind of stories that you think of weeks, months, and years after reading the story. Great writing and I'm looking forward to reading more from Michael!
