“Life Happens. The question is what are you going to do about it? ~ Bob Ravener
I was somewhat disappointed that the book was not a little more self directed but more a memoir. The author overcame a very difficult childhood with an alcoholic father. He goes on to complete an impressive education at the Naval Academy along with his service aboard a submarine. The then goes on to great accomplishment in a number of Fortune 500 companies.
I felt he went into some unnecessary detail on his baseball achievements and and coaching his daughters' athletics. But ultimately his message is one we all need to hear over and over. You make the difference and no one is going to do it for you. Despite the cards you are dealt in life you can change your destiny.
I would recommend this book to anyone being held back by the false belief that we are defined by our environment or circumstances. Having spent many years in corporate sales, I recognize the need for encouragement, and Bob’s book delivers. This is a good read for those looking for hope where there seems to be none. Bob stresses the importance of having values and priorities that put life in proper perspective, including faith in God. It sometimes reads like his faith is only in himself, but there is a fine line between selfishness and confidence. He does share the credit for his successes with the many people who believed in and helped him along the way. His premise that each of us can overcome tremendous adversities and attain great success is a story that has been repeated many times throughout history, and one that bears repeating many more times.
