A Promise of Thunder by Connie Mason is the second book in the series, and just like the first it’s a typical HR story from the 1990s that’s cheesy with lots of sex. It did do a good job of including the prejudice that people of mixed NA heritage face.

The hero’s name is Thunder and the heroine is Storm. He continually calls her “lady when talking to her. Cheesy names. And why call her lady all the time?

Here’s a cheesy excerpt from a passionate sex scene:

Intense rapture simmered through her, making her lightheaded as she floated on a fluffy cloud of incredible sensation. She was no longer flesh and blood but a spirit without substance, existing on a high plane of physical awareness.

I did so want to really like the story but I couldn’t get over the times I had to suspend belief, like when the heroine Storm stakes out her 160 acre land claim all by herself .., in a day. Or when the hero Thunder suddenly leaves her to fend for herself for an entire winter at their home which was 10 miles from town with no nearby neighbors. Truly unbelievable.. and there are other examples.

Overall, I struggled to rate this 2.5 and decided to round it up to a 3 as I’ve enjoyed other Mason HRs.

Thunder Grady Stryker is a half-breed Indian living in the late 19th century and it is a difficult time for mixed race folks, but he is taking a chance in the Oklahoma land race to start over as a farmer to some new land. In comes the 18 year old Storm Kennedy (now Stryker when they get married about half way through the book). She has had a tough time, because she is suddenly a widow, 2 days before the land race. She is a tough young woman and tries her best to take care of herself and start a new life on the land that she wins in the land race.
I wanted to slap silly Laughing Brook at least 5 different times. Why are men so blind to people that they consider 'like family'? Thunder thinks of Laughing Brook like a sister so he always things the best of every thing she does even though she is a real backstabbing bitch to Storm. I did like that Grady never cheats on Storm. I really respect his self control and his promises really mean something. I adored all the passages where the author describes Grady's buttocks and body. These are delicious and soft melty goodness, to say that this is perhaps the most sexy Hero that I've read recently.
This a well written western historical romance, that has been edited and published in the 90's. I got lucky and got it for free for kindle.

Firstly I just need to say that all the covers for this book are hideous. I mean seriously ugly. The paperback version is clearly showing its age and the kindle version I have... Well... I can only hope the cover models got paid well.

Secondly I have to say this just wasn't the book for me. I prefer my romance less on the bodice-ripper side of things and I quickly got tired of both Grady/ Thunder and Storm wallowing in miscommunication. I definitely prefer some plot, social interaction, and character growth inbetween sex scenes, but if you're after something uncomplicated with a bit of steam then this may be just for you.

It was a good read, but Grady was such a pushover in some aspects when it came to Laughing Brook.

A very good book and easy read. Thunder is a half breed indian that turned renegade after the death of his indian wife killed by 3 white men. An elder of the tribe told him he must leave and find Storm as that would be the only thing that would release the demons and hatred he carried.
Storm and her new husband had left Missouri for Oklahoma where the hoped to obtain free land in a land rush offered by the government. Buddy was killed by a stray bullet in a shoot out between Thunder and another rambler which challenged Thunder. Storm was now a widow but vowed she would continue on with the dream of her now late husband and try to obtain the land.
Storm did stake her claim however next to the renegade Thunder.
The challenge is now on between Thunder and Storm and how their love will develop.

I have read quite of few of her books.. but this one just tredged on and it.. I was bored and initerested in the characters romance. Yes she was very prejudice always referring to him as a savage... I confused how a villain could go from agreeing to have someone harmed if necessary to running out of town like a coward. His blindness to his sister in laws behavior was a slap in her face.. I stopped reading and will not finish it.

I cannot with this. It's giving internalized misogyny and appreciation to rushing into relationships to strangers in a matter of hours. And wtf, the male and female characters are named Lightning and Thunder? They're not fucking lab retrievers. Don't even get me started on the weird geographical layouts that don't really make sense with the historical events of that time.

I read this book like two years ago and I don't remember much about it. It's probably for the best.

Another pleasurable read from my dearest Connie Mason.
Once again a HOT HOT HOT read, Grady Striker is just as sexy as Blade (his father) was in the prequel to this.
Connie has given me a taste for Indian romances.
It was nice to revisit Blade and Shannon later in the book and they absolutely adore Storm! Storm is a likeable character and a beautiful natural blonde.

Set in 1893, Guthrie, OK, this is book #2 of the Horizon Set. Book #1 is "Beyond the Horizon."

This was a good romantic western. Storm ends up neighbors with Grady when they rush off to claim their land during the "Land Rush." Grady was raised with the Indians and had a son. He was a man torn between two cultures and not excepted fully by either.

Nice story of how two enemies, join up, fall in love and hack their way out of the wilderness amongst the White man who tormented them and the Indians who didn't understand them.

Nice western romance.

I'm pretty sure I've read it back when my Aunt was reading only Indian romances, I'll remember her when I re-read this.

It's a good western romance written back in the 90's. I enjoyed reading about the land run in Oklahoma.

I've not reading many Western romance novels lately. I can honestly say I'd never have picked up this book if it wasn't a kindle freebie, but it was a nice change of pace from paranormals, contemporary, and historical romance novels.

As always with Ms Mason's books, a well written and dramatic story that keeps you hooked until the very end. Colorful and exciting characters, wit beautifully descriptive and vivid settings. All you ever need in a historical romance with a difference x
