All Piper Carson wants is a fun night out on the blind double-date her friend Aria arranged. A chance to unwind and spice up her boring life of all work and no play.
Instead of the hoped-for heat of a jalapeno, she gets a shocking dose of cayenne when murder shakes up her world.
When Piper’s date ends up at the top of the suspect list, she’s torn between her sizzling feelings for him and fear of what she might discover as events pull her into a mission to clear his name. But he doesn’t make that mission easy. It’s a recipe for disaster.
And Piper’s family doesn’t make it any easier on her, laying down responsibility after responsibility. She feels like she’s been placed under the broiler with their unending demands as she struggles to sift through the clues.
And when Piper gets too close to the killer, the temperature rises from a gentle simmer until she’s trapped in a pressure cooker.
An enjoyable plot, characters are likable. My 1st time for this author. And I’ll read next in series. Twists in plot are easy to follow and add to the interest. Clean, no hate speech, and Recommended.
I found this book to feature weak characters and a murder with a motive that made no sense to me at all. In addition the main character is always late and I found myself spending more time worrying about her punctuality than about who committed the murder.
At first I wanted to rate this cozy mystery 3* though as soon as I started to think about what worked or not I was convinced that's not accurate and set it down to 2*. The three main characters were mostly likeable, the surrounding family characters mostly unlikeable with poor character development. I struggled very much and was wondering almost from the beginning why she's still working for her mother and aunt and accepts their and her sisters' verbal and emotional abuse. The premise and some of the turns were interesting but there were so many plot holes and inconsistencies or contradictions - especially in the second half of the book - it made reading it sometimes pretty painful or at least very laborious. If ever I see the first book in series for free I'll get it to see if closing some of the knowledge gaps will help to change my mind, but I'm not willing to spend any money on this series at this point.
A good read. But it needs to have more in the series. Well I did it again second time reading this book and I got more out of this read. I really wanted to punch that reporter in the face the way she acted around Piper. And her mom and Aunt plus sisters they need to back off of Piper. Piper needs to turn the table on them and see what they lack in there lives. At least she found love.
I always try to start with something positive. So, I'm positive I won't read any more in this series. The characters were okay. I didn't like the interact between Piper, her aunt, and her mother. Even when that witch of an aunt was trying to be nice, she switched to nasty in a blink of the eye. So much just felt forced and didn't make much sense. When the killer was revealed, I thought - "seriously? That reasoning makes very little sense." And why go after Piper? She never would have figured that out, because she's a dolt and it made zero sense. Took me a long time to read this one, because I kept getting frustrated and walking away from it.
I got this as a free offer and gave it a go. I'm not a fan of dropping into a series in progress, but this one did surprise me. Although the characters were too prickly for my taste the story was good and well written. I found myself not wanting to stop and had to know who was the killer. It was a light read and no sex scenes for sensitive types to worry about.
I sort of liked it, Piper drove me crazy with allowing her Aunt and her mom to brow beat her. She has been working for them for 17 years and has nothing to show for it. The mystery part of the story was good.
This one didn't hook in the beginning! At first I turned other books. While emptying my every growing library I decided I'd give it another shot! I fell head over heals in love with the storyline!
Okay, so, maybe this would’ve been better I read the first book prior to this one. It was an easy read without it, but I felt like I would’ve known the characters more. Still, if one needs a quick and cozy foodie mystery, this does the job.
5stars for a good read. This book is good for anyone young adults to older adults will enjoy this series. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.
A young man, Wyatt Brennan, is killed at a food truck. The Spiced Up is one of the many food trucks in the city. One night after a double blind date with Wyatt and Aria, and Eli and Piper, Wyatt comes back to the food truck. And, gets himself murdered. This was a so-so mystery. Not the best!
2nd book I have read by Lyndsey Cole ... a quick suspenseful read indeed .. I love how her books are packed full but so quick ... not drawn out and confusing ... quick nibblets of mystery and over ... Sometimes you just wanna read a book and not have to rack your brain and to what the heck did I just read? short & quick. Love that!! ( ;
Piper works at her Aunt's food truck and seems to be lacking quite a bit of drive. Always late for work, great at making excuses. Homeless, careless, bill-less just migrating from place to place watching animals or plants for shelter. Needless to say I wasn't a big fan of Piper. So naturally I was stunned when the author decided to make her the unofficial detective. Honestly the story line was entertaining, but the character really lacked having any sort of pull. There where zero redeeming qualities for her.
Two girls go on blind dates together. By the next morning one was dead. Who killed him. Was it his friend, his x-girlfriend , a disgruntled employee or who? The main girl of the story rides a bike , no car , and dad wont buy her one. She works in her aunts food truck. Has a habit of always being late for work. But she likes to metal in with who killed Wyatt. Trying to find out who did it. Lots of guess who did it . But it was someone maybe we didnt expect to do it.
What else could happen to our heroine, Piper? She is trapped in a job she doesn't like but has to resist as she needs the money. Then to top it off her double blind date evening ends up with a murder. She does her best to discover who his murderer is but the list of suspects is a long one. I felt sorry for her as she seemed a bit weak when it came to standing up to her mother and aunt who were her bosses who constantly criticize her. In all, a good plot with a surprise ending.
Aria and Piper are going on a double blind date. Next thing you know someone is dead. Once again Piper will be in the middle of the murder. This is a cute quick read cozy mystery. I totally enjoyed every minute of this book.
