Kate Leth and Megan Levens team up for a magical new series! Spell on Wheels!
Three young witches head out on an east coast road trip to retrieve their stolen belongings and track down the mysterious thief before he can do any damage to--or with--their possessions.
This trade paperback collects the first 5 issues of Spell on Wheels .
Kate Leth is a Canadian author and illustrator working in comics, animation, design, and feelings. A grown-up goth and pop culture devotee, Kate specializes in work for kids and teens. Their comics work includes Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!; Girl Over Paris; Spell on Wheels; and Adventure Time, among others.
They live in Halifax, Nova Scotia with an absolutely ridiculous cat and several regrets. They are queer and genderfluid/non-binary, a fact that greatly influences their work. Kate uses they/them pronouns, but probably won’t correct you.
What 'Charmed' would look like if the series had an inclusive cast. Not that I wasn't a fan of the show (despite it being under the aegis of Aaron Spelling, a man not known for diversity in his series - and don't give me Vanessa L. Williams from Melrose Place, since they did absolutely zilch with her character, and Daphne Zuniga coded Caucasian despite her last name).
Anyway, Spell on Wheels is fun, with loads of girl power and mystery. I'm totally enjoying this series. A trio of witches, a case of missing artifacts. One crazy road trip to get those magical artifacts back. A mysterious villain.
Oh goodness this was so good and has so much potential! Pretty sure this is going to be another favorite of mine! *.* also the art is gorgeous! And the plot is really interesting. I guess it's nothing new on the horizon given that it deals with witches but the characters are interesting, and the plot is engaging so this definitely has the potential for something more complex and developed. Going to read issue 2 now bc I can't get enough of the art. ALSO, CLAIRE makes me so happy. Finally a girl I can relate to -in terms of physical appearance, at least. Most women in comics are too sexy and were created for 'the male gaze' but here they're just ... people and not overly sexual or anything, unlike Harley Quinn for example -she's the first that came to mind. Anyway, this was a great beginning to what's probably going to be an epic series!
I'm on record as not enjoying Kate Leth's Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat from Marvel (although, I have to admit, it is growing on me) but her Dark Horse book, Spell On Wheels, is a whole different beast.
First off, the title is irresistible to an unashamed pun-lover like myself, so brownie points for that. Secondly, the artwork by Megan Levens is really solid and has a genuine charm to it (pun absolutely intended; see previous sentence). It reminds me of Mike Norton's stuff; not flashy, no bells and whistles, but good, strong visual storytelling.
Similarly, Leth's story is a simple one (a trio of young witches are robbed of some of their magical items and hit the road trying to track down the stolen items and the thief) but it's an enjoyable one, with some great cheesy grin-type moments, and it has a satisfying ending that leaves the door open for future adventures.
If Leth and Levens decide to do a sequel, I'm definitely jumping in for the ride.
3,5 stars. I enjoyed it, the art was cool and the subject matter interesting, but I suspect it's going to be a bit forgettable. I hope I'm wrong about this, though.
1. Kate Leth wrote Spell on Wheels. You might know Kate Leth from Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat, Edward Scissorhands, or a variety of other projects. I became aware of her on the podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer where she frequently does a Fashion Update segment. Now I'm a huge fan.
2. Three witches have to go on a road trip and retrieve their stolen items in order to stop a Big Bad? Sign me up. Combining the road trip genre with the supernatural and kickass female characters will always make me want to read it.
3. Megan Levens' art is really great. Her style reminds me of Joelle Jones's style in her Lady Killer series. It's got a great retro feel, and I love all the detail put into each page.
4. Marissa Louise's colors are similarly excellent. Everything in the series really pops out.
5. Spell on Wheels combines two of my favorite genres: road trip and mystery. The girls are on a road trip to recover their stolen possessions and stop the bad guy, but they also help the people they interact with along the way.
6. Spell on Wheels has a trio of strong female characters at the center that are almost as cool as the team behind this book. Jolene, Claire, and Andy have different personalities, looks, and body types, but they are all strong, smart, and ready to take on the bad guy.
7. In case I forgot to mention it, Kate Leth's writing on this book is AMAZING. 10/10 stars.
8. I love a good take-down of the patriarchy, and who better to deliver it than a trio of badass witches?
9. Spell on Wheels is very episodic, but everything still ties together by the end of the volume. I would honestly love to see a volume 2.
10. All of the reasons above. Highly recommended! Go get this trade right now.
I admit that I was very curious to discover this comic. Indeed, the mention of witches could only make me want to try it!
My opinion will not necessarily be very long as my reading was pretty fast but I had a good time generally. We follow three witches living together and who, after a burglary, try to find their property. It is not easy as the person is selling everything very quickly But they also want to find the culprit to make him pay for this theft. We will follow our three young women in this quest and nothing will necessarily be simple.
It was nice enough to read the story and the drawings are very well mastered too. It’s pretty funny to see these three women. I’m not sure how the whole thing will evolve, but I’m curious enough to see what happens.
*I read the first three issues of this in one go before the trade came out*
Ahhh this is so good! Inclusive! Beautiful art! Great plot! WITCHES! Also, this is surprisingly light hearted and makes me happy, despite the more serious overtones. Compared to some of the comics I read, this is definitely amongst the more positive, and I really recommend it.
Spell on Wheels is a fun supernatural mystery by Kate Leth (Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat). Reminiscent of Buffy andÌýCharmed, but also with some fun Scooby-Doo vibes, this comic was something we would have devoured as teenagers (well, those of us who are in our 20's-30's now).Ìý
The story revolves around three young witch housemates, Andy, Jolene and Claire. Each of the woman has their own magical speciality and their own distinct personality and style. They are very fashionable witches, who are endearing, cute and likeable.ÌýWe thought that the Leth developed theseÌýcharacters quickly, and skilfully.ÌýWe all like a good "monster of the week" type of story that sees our coven of witches take on a few different challenges throughout volume one.ÌýWe loved when the witched come across the group of older women who need their help with a haunting, but we especially loved Paul the goat man (we all wanted to read more about Paul)!
This isÌýreally cute and enjoyable comic with a greatÌýsenses of humour, and fabulous colourfulÌýartwork that really captures the cute rock-and-roll road-trip vibes. The story is nicely resolved in volume one, meaning you can choose to read on if you wish but because it wraps up nicely you wont lose out on anything if you do not.Ìý
The Adelaide Ladies Comic Club gave Spell on Wheels a 7 out or 10
This GN is ideal for those who've enjoyed Charmed and similarly lighter portrayals of witches and diverse female characters. I admit having mixed feelings about the story despite it having a strong premise and beautiful illustrations; it seemed that the after their initial introduction, the characters weren't given any arc or substantial conflict to overcome. It does include several entertaining panels/scenes that I found enjoyable to read. I think the biggest draw is that it can allow different types of women to recognize themselves in one or more of the three female leads, even if its just a small something. Happy reading.
Great introduction to the start of the series. Three best friends with magical powers get robbed. I love that we have women writers and artists working on stories with women main characters that are so highly entertaining and fun.
Another challenge crossed of the list on the Read Harder challenge for Book Riot. Last year I decided graphic novels were not my thing - this just confirmed it. Lumberjanes, Rat Queens, this one - they are all interchangeable in my unable to process graphic novels brain.
Expectations were blown. Maybe they were set too low, but still. I expected more kitsch and fluff but instead found it pretty solid and intriguing. You're thrown right into the story in a way that you feel like you're there, like this is a series I've been reading a long time.
This is an adorable peek into the lives of Jo, Claire and Andy, three roommates who happen to be witches. I dig the way they approach witchcraft. This arc (1-5) is incredibly short, so don't expect to spend hours in this world.
2.5 stars mixed feelings about this one possibly because it was quite predictable. It also reminded me of Charmed and that is why, I will definitely read the second volume to see if it gets better.
I love graphic novels about witches - should you doubt that you can simply peruse my Read shelf - and this series is one of my fave witchy graphic novels.
