A has been raised in happiness by the beautiful young men K and J. To thank them, A adores them as older brothers and grows innocently attached to them. But as A grows, J becomes colder to him with each passing day. The truth is, K and J are immortal vampires!
Not what I expected AT.All. The only character I liked was King, Ace drove me nuts, ick. I was expecting another route for this story, namely King and J's relationship raising a human child. If this had been focused on J and King's relationship, I would have loved it. sigh.
Freaking awesome! The best gay vampire manga EVER! It has plot, passion and much eroticism. The art is great and suits the story well. I am excited to continue with Book 2.
A boy adopted by vampires desperately wants to grow up and become one of them. I don't like this as much as I used to--the right elements are present and remain engaging, but I find the flaws more distracting. The protagonist's youth feels so taboo in the current state of fandom purity, but I appreciate the commitment to his indoctrination to the vampire family unit; it's intentionally unsettling. The vampire lore isn't all that original, but "vampires can't have sex" is hilariously literal--and feeding becomes a literal substitution, but the tableaus that mix sex and feeding, mortal and vampire, are liminal in the very best ways. So the real downfall is the twists. They make the central romance feel strained rather than organically complex, and they criminally underutilize the older vampire. He's positioned as a hurdle rather than a complication--or rather than a part of the relationship, which he is. It's a result of the manga cleaving to the pacing and tropes of BL at the cost of a its distinctive triad of dynamics, and I regret it.
This is the story of two vampires and their human ward. King turned J and they've spent their time together as father and son, brothers and lovers. However, J has issues with being a vampire and acts out many times. King takes in a human child, Ace, when his parents are killed in the hopes that having someone to take care of, to be responsible for, will help J from his dark mood swings and listless behavior.
However, King has brought into their family someone who not only changes J's behavior but slowly, as he grows, becomes something to J that King couldn't be. Ace becomes something that J wants more than anything but he doesn't want to turn Ace into what they've become and condemn him to the life King and J have lived. So he pushes Ace away. J's plan would work if it weren't for the fact that Ace feels the same way about J as J feels about him. He wants to be with J even if it means becoming a vampire... now he just has to convince J.
King also has to deal with the fact that his human ward who has become like his own son and his vampire-son and lover want each other above anything else. Where does that leave him?
Pathos is a fun and sexy vampire story that makes you ache for each character and their own position in this unusual family they've formed. You feel for King who has wanted nothing but for J and Ace to be happy but then realizes that that happiness is to have each other. You feel for J who struggles with being a vampire himself and tries to fight his attraction to Ace because he wants Ace to have a human life. You feel for Ace, who might be the youngest one, but seems to have the more solid idea of what he wants out of life and what that is, but because of his age, he can't make King and J see that.
Pathos is another great story from Mika Sadahiro and I would suggest everyone give it a read!
It was my favorite manga once. I re-read it and gave it solid 3 stars. Two gay vampires and one human child, which was taken in because of guilt, were forming a relationship for sake of the plot. King, the oldest, made from young delinquent half Chinese man who was happily raped by his fellows, but saved at the last moment and turned in to the vampire. Then he was quite jealous and mean to little Ace aka the brat boy. It was obvious from the beginning.Ace when turned to legal 18 for everything ended as vampire and in passionate lover of J. King had to go out of the way and his presence was terminated. The manga art is solid but plot lack a lot. There is predictable action, which put all in drain. The vampire fetish is pulled to maximu...bad.
This is one weird yaoi manga. I have to admit that the basic premise weirds me out a lot - two vampires 'raising' a young human boy, who ends up being totally obsessed with his desire for one of them.
This volume also jumps around a ton and half is bonus material that takes place before and during the events of this volume. The jumping back and forth really broke whatever pace there was and ended up just confusing me mostly.
I am intrigued though. I may just track down the second volume to see what ends up happening.
Yaoi manga with vampires...you can see why I picked up this title the other day. It's a good start to something and I know I will get volume 2 very soon. The drawing style started off a bit shaky, but I found I really liked it by the end. And there is an interesting dynamic between the three main characters.
I was disappointed in this book, I had heard it was really good, but I thought it was a little wanting in plot and the sex was kinda lame. I've really liked her other work so I think that made it more of a let down.
The following review is based off my own opinions, thoughts and reactions. So in other words brace yourself. *There may be inappropriate words such as curse words.* You have been advised in advance.*
I wasn't expecting that to take a turn for the interesting. I can't tell if I'm scared about where this is going or if I'm all hot and bothered by how this first book in this series turned out. Oh, the things I want to say about this book.
First off, I love the twist of homosexual vampires. I don't think I've ever read something that dealt with homosexual erotica and vampires in the same combination. It's delicious. I'm super excited to dive further into this book series because of it. Things are really interesting and very sexually steamy. And I'm all about feeding my fantasies through some good fiction.
What I really enjoy about this first book in the series is the various personalities that is shown immediately. You have the peace-keeper, the whiny brat, and then there's the hardass and his horrid attitude, but he secretly has a soft side. I love how well it balances and flows. It builds things so quickly for the next book so well. I'm very excited for the second book and seeing how it all plays out.
Can I also say that I love, really LOVE how Jay and Ace are connected?! Like oh my glob, can I just have that with someone?! Seriously! They are so deeply connected to one another that they can have intimate moments by themselves while being connected to the other person. Hello snack bar, my name is Autumn! This is such a beautiful twist on vampire relationships with mortals! Oh ho ho! I'm excited!
All in all, I'm excited to continue reading this series. Just because the first book has caught my interest and I really enjoyed it doesn't mean something couldn't turn out crappy in the next book. So we'll see how the rest of the series turns out, but as for this book it gets a thumbs up!
