--- He was supposed to never leave prison. And then he was in my bedroom. ---

Dayton is always on time to work, always organized, always ready to do overtime. The perfect receptionist-waiter-cleaner. Employee of the month. But Dayton has a secret side to him. A kinky, filthy side full of dark and dangerous fantasies that should never see the light of day.

He explores his taste for submission in one way only. For three years, he’s been writing letters about it to Max. Convicted to life in prison for the murder of three men and unlikely to ever be free, Max is the safest outlet for Dayton’s frustrated fantasies.

Only that he does leave prison. He finds Dayton. And he won’t settle for anything less than what he was promised in the letters. Too bad Dayton is nowhere near ready to indulge Max. Or himself for that matter.

More filthy goodness.Loved it.

Dayton has been working in a hotel for years.Living in a shabby room with only his cat for company. He's put upon by his despicable boss on a daily basis, hardly ever getting paid and expected to do way more than he should. He's firmly stuck in a rut.He suffers from very low self esteem, terrified of losing the only bit of stability he has in his life.He was bullied at school and it's still going on by the same person.

He tries to keep his dark fantasies to himself, his only outlet is writing to a man in prison where he describes exactly what he wants....after all it's not like he's ever going to meet the man?
Until one night changes everything.

Max has been in prison for 3 years and one of the only things keeping him going is his regular letters from Dayton. So when he's released he can't wait to see him.But Dayton is more than a bit horrified to meet the object of his fantasies in person. And to say that first scene between them is hot and rough is an understatement!!

Max was not at all what I expected. He might look rough and a bit terrifying but where Dayton's concerned he's a pussycat.I absolutely loved his character. He stands up for what he believes in but the more the two men interact the more Dayton starts to panic. He's totally put himself out there in his letters but he feels he can't live up to Max's expectation.

How can you have quite a sweet story but deliciously dirty at the same time....look no further than these Authors.

Highly recommended.

2.5 "get ready because the [discourse] is coming" stars

I dived into this for the "prison pen pal" angle, and ended up stuck with one of the most infuriating (albeit occasionally entertaining) MCs in the history of modern literature.

(Ok, that might be a stretch, but still)

A few select times he made me laugh, but for most of the book my true impulse was...

description
This guy needed to contract an acute case of knife to the throat.

****

Now, I'm too mentally taxed by the protagonist and his hypochondriac ass to write a proper introduction, so I'll just try to gather my remaining brain cells and, instead, start the three points I'll be expanding upon

THE MC DAYTON.

Let's get the main dish out of the way, shall we?

Since this whole story was told from his first-person POV, it meant that the content made me want to pull out my hair until a wig became a necessity. An achievement Dayton seemingly accomplished by virtue of just existing. In fact, most of the conflicts in this story could be traced back to his multitude of psychological issues.

(And not the fun kind, I'll confirm)

He was unable to stand up for himself, couldn’t voice his opinion until the very last second, and had a severe propensity for jumping to the worst possible scenarios, all while giving me whiplash with his increasingly irritating behavior.

description
Ain’t that the truth.

Because for realsies, his overreactions made up for about half of the "plot" (the other half was porn, of course). The tiniest drizzle? A tsunami. Someone rattling a table? An earthquake. His hand shaking a little after drinking too much coffee? That's it, he had Parkinson and it's untreatable.

So in conclusion, Dayton was: neurotic, obsessive, and to top it all off also a welcome mat for everyone else to step on and clean their dirty soles. This fool filled up the whole bingo card of bad personality traits and then some.

description
Dayton missed the memo, the assignment, and the whole damn course.

Yet, because not everything can be a total negative, his garbage character still made for at least some quasi amusing moments from time to time, such as

What would Max think of him now? Of all those things pinned to the wall, as if Dayton were some crazy, Hannibal-style stalker? He was not. His crush was nothing like that! But there was no denying that the corkboard was a bit like a shrine to Max and the ruthless bravery of his crime.

☝️ Dayton after his ex-con beau gets a peek of the serial killer altar he assembled in his honor ☝️

description
This happened in the first chapter, by which point I already knew the guy was deranged.

Then...

Dayton was still gasping for air but made use of his newly freed hands and pulled up the throw, covering his hips. Oh, God, would he feel Max’s cum coming out? He couldn’t afford to stain the throw, because it was dry-clean only!

Dayton: *hasn't been paid for months, is slowly starving and about to become homeless*
Also Dayton: but the cum stains though!!

description
*Common Sense has left the chat*

And onto the final quote, for the piece de resistance

Dayton shuddered and rubbed Max’s pecs with a hunger he couldn’t properly express. He almost wished he could bite off a chunk of that chest and keep it forever inside him.

description
What was that from the first quote about not being like a certain chef with a proclivity for human flesh?

All in all, Dayton did have his moments. Spaced out and far in between. No amount of outrageously amusing behavior, however, could make up for the rest of his messy ways.

If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what will.

Moving on to the next (and briefest) point...

THE LOVE INTEREST MAX.

He was physically there. Existing and breathing. And had a big dick too, which made him slightly more compelling than a potted plant. Although again, the potted plant wasn't an ex-con with anger issues.

Other than that?

description
description
He started this book with the personality of an unseasoned chicken nugget and ended it the same way. It’s all about consistency truly.

And now, at last

THE ROMANCE (and scroll down for a ✨possibly controversial opinion)

To absolutely nobody's surprise, the sex was hot. It had imaginative dirty talk, that for once didn't read like regurgitated lines copy-pasted from a manual. Plus an edge, considering we got to see Dayton's rape fantasies play a role in how he preferred to be "handled". And then some role-play, an element of secrecy, and an ever-present power exchange (or imbalance, more like it) in all of the couple’s interactions.

description
(Bet y'all saw that one coming)

The real problem was... everything besides the smut, really. And even how part of said smut was contextualized at times, if I were to be specific.

Some background first:

Dayton wrote to Max extensively about his non-consensual fantasies while the other man was in jail under a life sentence. Providing the inmate, in the meantime, with his address, all of his personal info, and even his place of work.

So, naturally, the first thing Max did once he got out after winning an appeal?

Why, break into Dayton's apartment, of course! Where he then played out a home invasion "re-enactment" and literally assaulted the guy without even introducing himself first.

But do not worry! Because you see, Dayton actually got off on it and ended up loving the whole thing. Since detailing a conceptual rape fantasy clearly equates to adoring being assaulted in your own home without any prior warning.

(And mind the fact, by the way, that this event was barely ever brought back up in the rest of the story, and never exactly questioned)

So it’s totally the same thing, I swear

description
You got me there, Thor, it isn't.

Nonetheless, my actual problem, it has to be clarified, is not with the scene or notion of a lack of consent in fiction, which I quite enjoy under different circumstances. My real issue, instead, was with the way it was addressed.

⚠️WARNING: here is where the discourse starts⚠️

I love dub-con, non-con, and any kind of controversial con in the book. But what I do not vibe with? When stories don't bother to frame the acts as such. It feels like a copout, and as detrimental to the readers that don't appreciate toeing the morally questionable line as to the ones who, like me, love to sink feet first into the dark and forbidden puddle.

Since yes, this is fiction and moral ambiguity is part of what makes it fun, but how can you expect me to partake in the delights of dark and edgy romance when the story can't even take the plunge and fully embrace the labels. If you're including rape or any kind of harassment or assault, then I think it's best to not mince words and depict it as such.

Because while this might've included a few so-called controversial topics... its real crime, for me, was trying to dismiss them in the most vanilla way possible.

But oh well

description
That's just my hot take on the matter.

****

So the bottom line is...

I'd recommend trying this if you're desperate for some smut!
But expect to be disappointed by everything else if any of my above-listed issues seem like things that might hinder your reading experience.

I will still continue viciously devouring the work this writer duo puts out, however, and do not judge them at all based on this single story. If anything, it was the fact that the Merikans are one of my favorite authors which made the sting from this read hurt significantly more.

But hey, if out of the 15+ books I've read from them I've only disliked this one?

It's an enviable track record indeed.

Whoa! This was the weirdest book EVER! Right now, I cannot make sense of what the world I have just left was all about!

Even though I cannot be hard-pressed to chalk out an informative review, I can definitely tell you that at the end, you do come out smiling (but I also had this disbelieving look on my face, probably like Dayton himself, properly shocked out of my tiny mind), thinking about just how genuine and loving Max was and how adorable in his vulnerability Dayton was.

The reason for one star less is that I really want to know what happened to Kathy and Greg at the end. And, this is a type of book/world I've never encountered before, and I guess I need some time to come back to Earth... :P

“As long as he had Max with him, he was untouchable, even by the demons in his own head.

Dayton is 24 trapped in his small town, working at a shitty job, with shitty pay....just an all round shitty existence. However, he has dark fantasies and desires and decides to write to a convicted murderer in prison as a form of escape and a safe avenue to let out said desires. He does not think his penpal will ever get out to act on his dark wishes. Dayton’s filthy letters become Max’s lifeline in prison, and once out, he sets out to meet the man behind the letters and bring his fantasies to life.

This book had me grinning like a fool. I loved it so much; it was exactly what I needed.

Dayton had issues. He’s a neurotic, anxiety-riddled mess, like a shaking chihuahua minus the bark. He’s scared to leave the small corner he’s carved out for himself despite being overworked and underpaid by his horrid boss. He’s isolated with no real friends or a love life; his only companion is his cat, Cinnamon. However, we learn why he’s the way he is and the reason he's afraid of change and trying new things. He was traumatized and burned badly as a teenager for going after what he wanted and sharing his desires.

Max. Max. Max.

Okay, I have a weakness for ex-con MCs and adored Max. He’s unapologetically gay and does not stand for any disrespect towards Dayton, even if he does not appreciate his actions at first. He’s rash but, at the same time, so caring and sweet. He’s ready to defend Dayton and stand up to all the horrible people in his life. The contrast between how rough and filthy he is and how soft he is with Dayton made my heart melt! He’s so selfless and willing to do so much, even returning to that Inn for Dayton!

While the story does not focus directly on the letters between the two, we do learn how much they meant to Max.

“I will never forget that whenever I was crawling out of my mind in prison, I could always depend on that, like clockwork, there’d be a letter from you. Each one hooked my heart, and I just had to come find you. I would never abuse your trust.

“It kept me going. To know that there was a guy outside, who could freely go out and date, and have sex with someone, yet still gave me all this time and attention. Sure, I’m hot, but there are hot guys everywhere, and you still chose me.

The sex was filthy, rough, hot, and sexy; this is KA after all! I absolutely loved it. The dirty talk? Perfection. I enjoyed all the role-playing, primal play, everything. The sweet and tender moments too. I’ve said this before and will say it again, but KA writes some of the most steamy and flirty sex scenes ever. This book starts with a bang, and the scene outdoors towards the end *chef kiss*

“Maybe I’ll keep you, Max kept seeping the sweet poison into Dayton’s ear. “Use you until you stop being so tight. I bet in a year or two you’d learn respect. I have a cabin in the woods. I’d come down to the basement every day to feed you my cum.

Max took a big drag of smoke and watched Dayton for a long time, ogling him from his face to his dick. His eyelids lowered a bit, and it gave Max a softer look.

I loved how Dayton became braver. Max’s love and selfless acts for Dayton played a role in him finally having some courage and standing up for himself and Max. He is actively seeking to move and go after something better for himself. Also, seeing Dayton standing by Max’s side, holding his hand and being affectionate with him publicly was wonderful.

It had been great to have Max punch Greg, to have him protect Dayton from nasty comments or from Vanessa putting him to more tasks without paying overtime, but actually being his own hero? He was getting a taste for it already.

The amazing sex and the intimacy he shared with Max, unparalleled to anything he’d ever had with any of his past boyfriends, might have had something to do with the boost of confidence that allowed him to spread his wings at numerous online interviews.

This book isn’t dark (at least to me), but it’s gritty, and Dayton and Max play out some dark fantasies, such as kidnapping and rape play (or CNC).

The ending was perfect.

After the events that had led him to prison, Max thought he’d never find peace again, and yet here he was. Alive, thriving, and eating lunch with the man he loved. He kissed Dayton’s temple with butterflies fluttering in his stomach.

I know their bosses at their new workplace are from the Special Needs duet so look forward to reading about them.

Overall I really enjoyed Break My Shell! It was a delightful read, one I will be re-reading over and over again.

This is my favorite Merikan book to date. The story didn’t have any filler, there was not one moment where I felt bored or wanted to put this story down.

I went into the story blind, which feels like the best way to read this one. Warning: It starts off at a sprint!!

This is NOT a traditional love story.
✔Genuine vulnerability
✔Prison pen pal (off page)
✔Beautiful character arc
✔Honest communication
✔Alpha/primal, role-playing, non-consensual fantasies
✔Wonderful hea!

This is my favorite kind of storytelling. These authors don’t spoonfeed the reader information, but it is slowly woven throughout the story, and as you read each characters purpose and depth becomes more clear.

The high level of sex and intimacy didn’t feel salacious, it felt like a call and response from two men who belonged together.

Dayton isn’t necessarily as forthcoming about his idiosyncrasies with Max as maybe he should have been. He reminded me at times of one of those nervous little dogs, but trying so hard to be brave. The final reveal of how he was treated as a teenager is horrific and explains so much of his anxiety and insecurities.

I do wish the authors had included some of the letters these two men shared over those three years. That felt a missed opportunity, especially since epistolary stories are so rare to find.

The intimate scenes are just that. Highly erotic and very intimate.

The ending of the story perfectly aligned with another book of theirs, , and I couldn’t have been happier to see Ryan and Liam again.

This is one of the BEST book covers, it's exactly how I pictured these two in my mind.

HUGE thank you to Dan for the fabulous recommendation!!

~4.5 stars rounded up for the lovely epilogue.~

Surprisingly sweet and swoon worthy but at the same time filthy dirty, Break my Shell was not what I expected, but it easily became one of my favorite books by the authors.

First, lets take a moment to appreciate that cover. I swear, this is one of my all time favorite covers. See the cute, ginger guy with the cocky attitude, taunting that big bear of a man? This is Dayton. Or to be precise, this is who Dayton claimed to be in his letters to Max, a convict with whom he exchanged dirty letters.

Real life Dayton is shy, polite and a tad awkward. Ok he's basically a doormat. Imagine his surprise, when Max gets out of prison, something he thought that will never happen. Day made promises in these letters, and now Max is here to collect...
"He’d set a trap for a beast that was never supposed to come out of the woods, and now that the cage was filled with its bulk, Dayton did not know what to do with his desires."

As for Max...he surprised the hell out of me. Max is such a nice guy! Now you 're thinking "how can a man who murdered three people be nice?". But he really is! His life got turned upside down that fateful day, but he won't give up. I LOVED how protective, supportive, and sweet he was to Day. He really loved him!

The sex is dirty, kinky, and everything in between. It's pure filth.

There's role play and humiliation kink. Day's dirtiest fantasies come to life, and it is during these scenes that he truly lets go. He didn't just find love in Max, he also found trust and safety, something that was taken away from him way too early.
"It was a bit like an out-of-body experience where his mind knew it was all a game for his own pleasure, but his body still sweated, his heart rattled, and his fingers trembled. And yet his mind was aware enough of the reality of what was happening to send so much arousal coursing through his veins that his cock was already aching in his jeans."

In a way, this story is Day and Max's journey to a better future, and I loved the "us against the world" vibe. These guys faced their past and present that failed them, and reached a destination together. A destination I freaking loved!

There's a cameo appearance by Ryan and Liam from , the books that have been sitting in my kindle forever, but I 've been too chickenshit to start. Now I'm wondering why. Just a small taste of Ryan made me want MORE!

Overall, this was great fun. Highly recommended for those who crave a kinky, sexy read with a good dose of sweetness.

4.5 deliciously sweet yet dirty hearts!

WHAT?!?! A book all about role-playing!!! and not just any role-playing, but non-con/power imbalance role-playing!!!

And he couldn’t lie to himself about it he loved force. His dirty fantasies had men coercing him into sexual submission, even if it was ultimately for Dayton’s pleasure. A security officer after catching him shoplifting, a guy getting him drunk and having his way with him at a party, a TSA agent performing a search much more thorough than he should.

And by KA Merikan, so you know it's going to be kinky! I’m in heaven!!!

So we have Max, who was just released from prison after having his charges dropped.

He’s been corresponding with Dayton via letters and a few phone calls since the beginning of his sentence 3 years ago. When he is released he obviously goes straight to Dayton, well because Dayton is the love of his life. However Dayton doesn’t see it that way.

Dayton started writing to Max because he admired his courage and bravery in defending himself against a hate-crime. Over time one thing led to another and Dayton started telling Max about all his dirty fantasies. He never expected to meet Max and doesn’t know what to do when suddenly confronted with the two versions of himself.

The Dayton from the letters was a daring, carefree person, someone the real Dayton didn’t necessarily want to be, but definitely someone happier than him.

Honestly Dayton annoyed me quite a bit with his flip-flopping on whether he wanted to be with Max or not, and Max was such a lovesick sweetheart that I felt frustrated for him as well. But the slut me was sooo ridiculously happy with all the smut that this still got a high rating.

“That’s it, slutboy, arch that ass against me, ‘cause you’ll be riding my cock soon.

Every side character in this story are absolute dicks and I guarantee they will all push you to your limits of not throwing your reader across the room. Most of them get a good comeuppance but I did want to see what happened to some of them in the long-run, you know, to make sure they all died in a hole or something.

This probably would’ve been a 3.5 heart rating because of Dayton’s flip-flopping, but role-playing is my weakness and the ending of this book was sweet, dirty and utter perfection!

Highly recommended!

Break My Shell, as was promised, was extra dirty! Filthy filthy dirty. It starts off with an adrenaline rush of a dub-con scene, but any discomfort I felt at the dubiousness of the consent was quickly overridden with just how hot it was. Well, at least as soon as I knew the real score.

Dayton has been slaving away at a middle of nowhere motel in Montana, working for a woman who is better described as a snake in the grass. She was behind on paying everyone, but no problem, right? It's not like she was going without. And Dayton took it, because he didn't think he could do better. So he put up with the bullying of someone he went to high school with and every night he went "home" to the run down motel room at the place he worked and talked to his cat, Cinnamon. Not much of an existence, for sure, but he can't exactly afford to leave it, either.

One of the only things that has kept him going for the past few years are the letters and occasional Skype calls from Max, an inmate in Texas imprisoned for murder. With Max, Dayton felt like he could actually be the Dayton he desperately wanted to be, because well, there's no danger that he will ever meet Max, so what's the harm in telling Max his deepest, darkest fantasies? Funny thing, that... Max's prison sentence was cut a bit short, so guess who is in Montana all ready to enact all of Dayton's deepest darkest fantasies? You guessed it!

Max was actually a very sweet and protective man. Before going to prison, he was a boxer with a promising career ahead of him. But life has a way of coming at you, sometimes, and in the blink of an eye, it's all gone. And then his family disowned him, his trainer turned away, and any friends he had evaporated. So for three years, all Max had to look forward to were the letters from Dayton. Someone to looked upon him like he wasn't scum of the earth. You'll have to read the book if you want more of Max's story, but trust me when I say, trust the authors to not do you wrong here.

Max and Dayton, when they were getting dirty, were so filthy! Dayton has a bit of a humiliation kink and he especially gets off on rape fantasies. Not my thing, at all, mind you, but for Dayton it was a way to let go, when he was with someone he really trusted. And while the last person he let in on that secret betrayed him, Max really takes care of him. The kink only comes out in specific circumstances and Dayton can just...be. It was sweet, actually, and a bit beautiful. With Max, Dayton felt safe and gained more confidence to stand up for himself (and it was glorious), and with Dayton, Max felt like he really mattered. So, while Dayton's kink is not my kink, I still loved every bit of this story.

This book is undeniably hot. Max was released from prison and now who he turns to is Dayton, a sweet guy he had made contact with and shared their wildest dreams via letters. The opening scene was promising and exciting that I thought this book would be unputdownable. Yet I was wrong, other than those sex scenes, the other parts of this book were boring and scattered. I got that Dayton was bullied and he didn't want to do something about it because there must be consequences following after. But I did not like his attitude, it was annoying I depicted him as a loser even though he makes up his mind near the end of the story.

Max is hot, dominant and piqued my interest. I kinda loved this character.

Anyway, those four sex scenes are worth every buck I spent on this book.

I'm so gonna save this team of authors. They have a knack for insanely unusual plot themes.
I absolutely loved this story!

I know, the very first scene might be quite a deal breaker, because what makes a

The very beginning was extremely weird.
And the humor in the most inappropriate moments made this surely a highly entertaining read, but it felt a bit like a sitcom in some places.

With his prostate nailed over and over, it felt as if his balls were overripe, ready to burst with their juices.

Oh, God, would he feel Max’s cum coming out? He couldn’t afford to stain the throw, because it was dry-clean only!

His breath caught, and he closed his eyes in shame, but it just felt so good. Maybe that was why some babies had such a hard time with letting go of the pacifier?

However, after the initial bumps were covered, the story worked perfectly well.

Dayton is a 24 year old receptionist/waiter at the River Inn hotel in his hometown. He has suffered a severe trauma in his youth that left him insecure and lacking confidence in the most basic things in life. His boss, hotel owner Vanessa has employed him for many years, but pays him at irregular intervals, by now having accumulated several thousand dollars of debt to Dayton, which he just accepts and keeps working, since he's happy he has a room over his head for himself and his cat Cinnamon.

His only guilty pleasure is a pen-pal friendship with a guy in prison who killed three men. In his letters to Max, he shares his darkest erotic fantasies (along the line of 'I want to be an escort who is overpowered by a muscular john and raped in the woods', like a role play scenario).

description

What Dayton doesn't know is that Max was just released from prison and is DYING to meet him in person.

Meeting the handsome, muscular, inked ex-con Max, Dayton realizes the man must think him a loser and coward, compared to the man he pretended to be in his letters.

Max is indeed surprised to find Dayton completely different than the uninhibited kinky guy who wrote him sweet and sexy letters and made his lonely time in prison bearable.

Even when Max sees how Dayton allows everyone to treat him like dirt, he stays by his side and appreciates Dayton's help in letting him stay in his room and sharing what little things he has with him. Only sexually, their friendship doesn't work the way Max had assumed it would.

Max is very emotional and carries his heart on his tongue, causing Dayton troubles that might risk the safety of the small bubble he created for himself at the River Inn. But Dayton's dark past is coming back to haunt him and Max' muscles and confidence might not be enough to save him from the demons of his past.

I really loved both guys. Their sex was unusual. I guess it wasn't actually a BDSM theme, as I had assumed at the beginning - but rather an alternative sexual life style: Roleplay sex, which I found surprisingly exciting.
The real deal would be terrible and an actual crime, but as a role play theme with a boyfriend who would never hurt you, it's totally exciting. It's definitely a first in my books and I really appreciate the refreshing change.

I'll keep looking for books from these authors, especially '' is on my list now. That blurb, OMG!!

However, for this one, I gotta deduct a half star, because of Tanya, a character introduced in the last 10% (never a good idea for ANY story...) who did nothing but raise doubt between the guys and that was totally unnecessary and *could* have wrecked a perfectly HEA.

Btw, this book is connected to in a cute way.

When I started this book I expected a lot of dirty talking, role-playing and kinky scenes. And well I got them. But I also got another side of Dayton, one I didn't really like. He accepted to be treated poorly by a lot of people, mostly by his boss, Vanessa, who didn't pay him for all his work at the hotel. I wanted him to man up, to start defending himself and stand up to the awful Greg.

"You can't have people push you around."

The beginning of the book was perfection. My favorite authors surprised me again. Dayton and Max were so hot and perfect for each other in bed. To be completely honest I'll admit all the sex scenes are amazingly written.

Somewhere in the middle of the book I got a little bored with Dayton's attitude and all that hot and cold with Max.
Max was an ex-con, full of tattoos and with a hard past, BUT he really wanted Dayton and he didn't deserve to be pushed around just because of Dayton's insecurities.

What saved it for me would be the Epilogue. I got pretty happy with Day's revelation:

"It was high time he learned to fight for himself".

At last, I might add!

I really liked this. It had an interesting premise, and I thought the main character had a very well-developed and authentic personality.

The story is about Dayton, who is very timid, insecure, fearful, and has been communicating with a man in prison (Max) for three years.
In this communication he has opened up about very specific fantasies he has, where he is completely out of control in all different kind of sexual scenarios (basically meaning that he has a non-consensual kink).
Dayton thought that he would never meet Max (since he had a life-sentence), which was the only reason he felt comfortable enough to open up to him about these things. However, Max's sentence is suspended and he suddenly gets out of prison..
I'm not going to go into detail about what happens, but Max basically decides that he is going to put Dayton's fantasies into reality (even before discussing that with him).
As you can imagine, Dayton is pretty freaked out about this (but also vaguely turned on). Luckily, he does stand up for himself, and tells Max that this is very strange and creepy behaviour, and they need to take it slow. So... They do. To be honest, Max would basically do anything Dayton wants as long as he'll have him.

"I'm sorry if I pushed you too far. I promise we'll go at your pace if you take me back."

Aside from Dayton's relationship with Max, there is also a lot of other (depressing) stuff happening in his life. He has been completely abandoned by his parents, he is being blackmailed by a horrendous ex-classmate, and his work environment is terrible and constantly taking advantage of him. His life pretty much sucks. And he does not ever stand up for himself.
I suppose Dayton's lack of a spine could be annoying to some people, but I found him authentic, and I mostly just felt bad for him. He really was a genuinely nice guy, and he didn't deserve such a shitty life.

All in all, I enjoyed this book a lot. I thought the pacing was really pleasant, the plotline was engaging, the main character was likable (to me at least), and the romance had an interesting dynamic (although the chemistry could have been better).

This book exhausted me. I liked the relationship and the role playing was HOT HOT HOT! But the way Dayton just let people mess with him. I had no respect for him.

This book starts off with a bang when Dayton is surprised by an intruder in his home. He is scared, but also confused when he recognizes the man’s tattoos. It is Max, the prisoner he has been corresponding with for the last 3 years.

After the shock wears off after Dayton’s most incredible sexual experience of his life, he is confused. Max wasn’t supposed to be released; they were never supposed to meet. But Max fell in love with Dayton’s letters and is here to fulfil all his secret and dirty fantasies

I liked how this book started. The role playing was really hot. I also liked how Max was firm and dominant, but also sweet and loving with Dayton.

My biggest issue was with Dayton and what a doormat he was. He worked in a small inn, but he had a terrible boss. She owed him thousands of dollars and hadn’t been paying him for the last 2 months when Max shows up. I had such a hard time understanding why Dayton stayed at a place where he didn’t get paid.

And when the bullies from his past showed up (several times) and blackmailed him. Come on dude, grow a pair.

Just when I thought the two were finally getting some help from someone offering them a place to stay when they needed it, she kicks them out because they are a bad influence on her daughter.

All the side characters in this sucked or were just plain evil. It was too much. So many villains I lost all faith in humanity while reading this.

And since this is told entirely from Dayton’s POV, we went through all his insecurities and panic attacks. He doubted everything and was constantly afraid. It was tiring.

Overall I liked the relationship and the role playing, but the angst that was Dayton was too much for me. This is not a happy read.

description

Dayton is a meek receptionist at a struggling hotel in Montana. Having grown up in this small town, he experienced hatred and intolerance as a teen when he was outed for gay. Since then, Dayton learned to keep to himself in an effort to avoid any other confrontations or unwanted attention. Living alone with his cat, Cinnamon, Dayton has dreams but doesn’t believe he’ll ever be able to escape this small town and live as he wishes.

“You gotta risk a bit if you want results.

Max is a former professional boxer who was incarcerated for three years. During this time, Max and Dayton corresponded providing friendship and comfort to each other and knowing why Max was imprisoned made Dayton feel as though heroes actually existed. Upon being freed, Max makes a surprise trip to finally meet Dayton and that is when the unexpected happens.

“No one had ever kissed him the way Max had, and no one had ever fucked him with such ferocity.

The initial introduction between Dayton and Max is quite explosive as they enact one of the many fantasies they exchanged in their letters. It’s clear they share passion, but Dayton is insecure about what he can really offer a man like Max. In Dayton’s eyes, Max is everything he cannot be - brave, outspoken and strong - yet as they begin to know each other, Dayton soon realizes the balance he brings to their relationship. For Dayton, this realization comes at an emotional price when he must confront his biggest fears.

“Sometimes, people show their true face at the first sign of trouble. I just wish you hadn’t had to go through it all.

Break My Shell offers a sincere and realistic depiction of how intolerance can be oppressive until it’s no longer accepted. With Dayton, he needed one person in his life to believe in him and when Max was willing to defend Dayton at any cost, it triggered a deep change for the better. Despite Max being portrayed as the stronger character, he certainly wasn’t immune to anti-gay sentiments by family and strangers and he paid dearly for his actions but just in a different way than Dayton.

Dayton is a quiet, good hearted and relatable character. Reading how his boss and others constantly took advantage was frustrating but Day’s reasoning for allowing this treatment made me sad for him. Once Dayton took ownership of his life, it was a relief to feel his happiness, acceptance and sense of hope. Max provided a good balance with his no-nonsense approach but even with his tough guy exterior, Max always showed reverence to Dayton.

While this book offers filthy hot sex, it is also grounded in real life struggles and how one can find the strength to be true to himself and others. This is the second book I’ve read by K.A. Merikan and I continue to enjoy their style of writing - genuine, sexy and provocative. If you’re looking for an endearing M/M story, I recommend!

What an awesome premise! Lots and lots of lovely dirty talk in this one.

“That’s it, slutboy, arch that ass against me, ‘cause you’ll be riding my cock soon.

Also memorable delicious quotes:

"He remembered how Max had consoled him with his dick..."

If, like me, you read those and go "Wheeeeeee!" then you'll like this book.

I am used to reading every crazy thing that comes out of the minds of Kat and Agnes so when I read the blurb for this book I was expecting a dark romance but this was far from it. Dayton's kink is what we could call taboo but besides that this story is very nice, both character had difficult lives but they were good people.

Dayton has worked in horrible conditions in a hotel for years, he doesn't leave for two reasons: 1. the hotel owner is always late with his payment (she owes him thousands of dollars) and 2. Dayton is very afraid, he always does what's safe because the only time he was brave something bad happened and after a series of difficult events he ended up with his current job, so now he's a scared man. Dayton's happy time is his biggest darkest secret, he's been writing for two years to a con, they have developed a sort of relationship through letters, Dayton feels free to talk about his fantasies and doesn't feel the pressure to act on them because the man he likes is behind bars.

Max was a boxer that was attacked by a group of men because of his sexuality, Max defended himself, killed the men and ended up in jail. Dayton's letters have kept him sane and he falls for him.
When Max is released he goes to look for his man but the problem is, Dayton might have fantasies and like Max but he's not ready to act on these things, what's gonna happen now?

I really liked this story, I enjoyed the romance that even with the kinky fuckery was beautiful, Max was a little bit pushy sometimes but he deeply cared about Dayton and only wanted the best for him. My .5 rating is because even though I understood Dayton and his reasons for being afraid and carefuland thought they were valid, I was very frustrasted with the way he treated Max sometimes.
In the end they do get the life they both deserve and I was left with happy smile on my face.

Another kinky story by K. A Merikan. Honestly, these ladies always seems out to bring out the inner fetish in me. I didn't even know I dig the whole role play and humiliation scene. From the blurb, I was bracing myself from something dark, but it was everything but dark. In fact, the ex-convict, Max seems to be such an awesome lover, who wants nothing but makes all of Dayton's fantasies come true.

There isn't much of an intro to explain on Dayton and Max's initial contact or how they come to know each other so intimately. Max just barged into Dayton's life like an unstoppable tornado. Real life Dayton is anything but sexy, he is meek, he is being bullied by awful people, and he seems like a total loser. I feel so sorry for Dayton and annoyed at him for being a total pushover. But thank goodness Max is now here to set things right. Max isn't one to demand Dayton to change, but he just can't stand people treating his lover like shit. I love love Max. He is such a grumpy ass with a big heart.

On the smuttiness front, Dayton love his fantasy of being humiliated and forced upon, that's what turns him on, but in real life, he wants his lover to respect him as a person, who he ultimately found in Max. The role play scene does feel over the top with all the acting, it was interesting though and I assume is suppose to be over the top. For someone who actually love watching porn, it feels familiar.

If role play ain't your thing, don't worry. This story is not all about role play. In fact there is only three scenes. Beside fucking each other to coma, they do have to deal with their life, which is totally sucks donkey. I enjoyed the drama they have within the hotel and specifically the bunch of douchebags that are out to ruin Dayton's life. The plot is engaging and there is so much more than just smut. It gets a little heavier towards the end, which make me so much more emotionally invested on Dayton and Max.

Boy, I know this book has gotten some glowing reviews, but I have to say it just wasn't my cuppa tea. I loved the premise and Max .... gawd .... Max ... and the sex. That first scene is hella hot. But Dayton irked the living hell out of me and I just could not get past that.

oh my god, what a fun ride! That opening scene... awesome! And I actually gasped out loud at least twice *wink*

Some of the best dirty talk I've read in awhile and it came so naturally out of both these characters' mouths, what a perfect pairing.

Loved the story, everything worked really well and there was just enough edge to it that I wasn't sure what would happen next, and knowing these authors seriously anything could have happened next.

I can't give this book more than 3.5, although it did begin very, very promising.

🟣 Ex-prisoner + penpal
🔵 A bit of a size difference (big jock + twink)
🔴 Consensual non-con
🟡 Both MMCs in their 20s
🟢 Great anticipation, but it fizzles out
🌶 Good spice, but doesn't deliver what was "promised"; t/b

Alright, so I was pretty excited when I began reading this book, because its opening scene is exactly that, a (somehwhat) consensual non-con sex, that Max, the ex-boxer and Dayton, a lonely hotel receptionist, have been talking about for years, while Max was in prison for killing 3 people.

Max was attacked for being gay, so he defended himself and had to go to prison, where his promising boxing career vanished before his eyes and his family and friends abandoned him.
Dayton, as his 3-year long penpal, was the only person helping him get through the tough times.

Max gets pardoned without telling Dayton, so he makes a surprise visit to Dayton, where Max and Dayton then have this amazing, amazing sex, and I thought - wow, this is just the beginning, this is going to be great!

Here are Dayton and Max in this first scene in my mind, the potential was definitely there.

No, I was wrong.

The hype, the energy, the sexual tension and that sweet angst sizzled out when I, as a reader, realized, Dayton is actually not such a good character in this book. He was shocked to see Max in person, he took time to come around and internalise the whole potential-real-relationship-idea, I completely understand that, but the way he was doing it wasn't good, it was oftentimes very awkward and cringe.

Dayton has no backbone, he's neurotic, anxious and nervous all the time, but not in an endearing way (to Max), no, he's pushing Max away all the time and that hot sex they were writing to each other about? What the author states was said in those letters and what Dayton wanted? Never happened.

Max was the perfect character for it, if the spice would be more developed in this direction and Max wouldn't have to tone it down all the time, I think we might've gotten a really good, sexy story out of this, but we didn't, at least in my opinion.

After about 70%, when Max and Dayton get thrown out of the hotel they were living in, then it really gets boring and the book ended right there, at least for me. While they were living at the hotel, it was interesting, things were happening, but after that I think the wrong decision was made for them to move.

I didn't feel like Dayton's bullies got the satisfying payback at all for what they've done and been doing for most of Dayton's adult life and for such a strong, intimidating character that was Max, what did he do? He took some rotten eggs and went to throw them at Dayton's bully's house. Come on. That was just ridiculous.

At the end of the story where Max had a secret job, I honestly thought he started boxing again, but no, Max went back to that motel and asked for his job back. What?

No, painting Max as this soft, mellow character who'd humiliate himself for Dayton wasn't the right way to go.
Max lost his edge and I'm thinking, where was even the point of him being an ex-convict then?

Things just stopped making sense, complete that with Dayton being an awkward, annoying character and there goes the potential for a wonderful story.

If it wasn't for the completely filthiness of this book then this would have been a throw away for me. Unless it was the smexy times, then the other half of the book I was trying not to hulk rage my kindle. C'mon, Vanessa & Greg should have perished in a 18 wheeler wreck. They deserve everything that could have happened to them. I spent so much energy mad on Dayton's behalf, and the instance where we see him stand up for himself and gets justice fades to black.

I was super angry. I'm still angry a day later. I'm not 100% sold on Dayton or Max at this point. Both annoyed me for different reasons, but Dayton probably more since he couldn't figure out what he wanted. He seemed like a skittish dole who wouldn't stand up for himself. His reasons came out in the book, but they just pissed me off more because he let his attackers get away with assault. His parents are good for nothing losers, and the only person who cares about him a little is Max. The ex-con, Dayton has been writing to for the pass 3 years. He's written him all type of humiliating, kinky fantasies that he would want to play out. Dayton didn't expect any of it to come true, but the world has a way of putting you on your butt when you least expect it.

Now, I will say the authors definitely delivered on the dirty talk and sexy times. It was freaking hawt, but I'm not sure Dayton's kink is my kink. I won't digress, these two definitely know how to write a damn sex scene. They were very compatible through these. I liked reading about it, and it wasn't uncomfortable. I guess I wanted Dayton to be more comfortable in his own skin. I can understand now why he wouldn't as I write this review. I understand Dayton's struggles.

I do feel like the ending was really rushed. From one important scene into the next is the epilogue. I found myself flipping the page back and forth to make sure I didn't miss it. But I didn't and I wanted some resolution in Montana before they packed up their bags and left. All in all, I thought this was an okay book. If you are looking for something that's going to burn up the page then this is your book!

DNF @ 20%

I was really excited about this book because the plot synopsis was so intriguing. Unfortunately it's also the type of plot that has to be executed well and carefully or else you get some rapey scenes that have you going "What the fuck..." like in this book.

I stopped reading shortly after the whole interaction of Dayton saying "Let's take it slow" and then Max a few paragraphs later saying "How about I blow you, huh? Is that okay, or not?". What the fuck?

The grammar was pretty terrible as was some of the phrasing, comma usage and general sentence structure.

This story basically started like a burglar/rape porno. I don't mind dubious consent situations if they're done well but this one was not.

I feel particularly mislead by all those 4 and 5 star reviews that were from advanced copies. This is getting to be like Amazon with these "unbiased" reviews. Reviews are useless if they're all 5 stars with a ton of fluffy bullshit. I want honest reviews, not paid reviews.

Break My Shell wasn’t what I was expecting, not necessarily in a bad way, though.
When I read the blurb, I was envisioning a dark romance, some non-con vibes and other crazy stuff.
And maybe I did get those things, sort of.

The start of the book was great, but it didn’t hold up throughout.
I ended up liking Max more than Dayton.
Dayton’s character was a neurotic mess, extremely anxious and full of issues the way he presents himself made him also a little unlikable.
Max, on the other hand, was actually a sweet and soft teddy bear.

In typical K.A. Merikan fashion, the smut was incredible and deliciously kinky.
I’m rounding up my rating just for the spice, because 🥵

The plot kind of falls through towards the end and it was all over the place.
Still enjoyable, especially if you like CNC.

Tropes and NSFW info (spoilers):
- CNC and role-play
- Degradation kink
- Ex-convict MC
- Cat owner
- Blackmail and abuse (not from other MC)

POV: 3rd person, only Dayton’s

4.5 stars. Sweet, sexy and filthy dirty, all wrapped up in a nice, weird bow. It's out there alright but not so over the top that the characters become caricatures. I fell in love with Max, a convicted murderer. Hee, hee true that! Dayton is a kinky limp noodle but he thankfully grows a pair and learns to not take anyone's shit anymore. He had me worried there for a while. Most of the side characters were detestable individuals, with a few exceptions.

Strange love this but the authors make it work which is why their stories are so damn much fun to read.

Liam and Ryan from Special Needs make an appearance. More delicious weirdness. Definitely going to read that one soon.

Recommended for anyone willing to step out of the proverbial love shack and take a twisted turn or two.

Filthy and hardcore, yet sweet and fluffy. How is it possible you ask? Just read a Merikan book that's how. These chicks have the amazing ability to describe the most hardcore and filthy scenario and make you say "Awwww" after you read it.
Max, Max, where do I find my very own Max? No one writes characters like the Merikan sisters, they've become my auto buy.
This book was lovely with a sweet HEA and some seriously hot role playing and hardcore sex scenes.
Loved it. Read it, if you're a freak like me. :)
