A tale for a lazy August, with pleasant and loveable characters, and a mild chuckle of easy-going comedy.
The generations that read Lindgren (Pippi Lingstockings-series) and Vestly (Eight Children-series) as kids have inevitably been subjected to the passing of time and thus they grew up. The recent wave of Swedish comedies borrow heavily from these children's tales in both voice and feeling. The genre includes the works of Jonasson (The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared) and Backman (A Man Called Ove), amongst others, and is also where Holmqvist's Rapsbaggarna¹ rightfully belongs. The writing style is simplistic and light hearted, relating the world in a way that borders on that of a young mindset. Holmqvist regularly uses interactions with everyday objects to communicate the emotions of her characters. One of the most eye catching amongst these meaningful interactions come in the form of deflated bicycle tires, which the bicyclist was supposed to inflate before setting out on the journey, but in agitation simply forgot to do so and is later surprised by this inattention. So much of the tale is built on day-to-day life that the requirements needed for the reader to empathize with the characters, are kept to a minimum. Further in line with Lindgren and Vestly this novel also deposes of any villainous characters and thus removes any notion of wilful malice from itself. Nor is there any true drama to be found, nor any danger. The problems which present themselves to the agonists are there to make us readers curious rather than to pine for their solution. All of these traits are essential parts of the lessons by Lindgren and Vestly, and unsurprisingly Rapsbaggarna feels like it could have been read aloud at a child's bedside. The only thing that prevents it from being so is the fact that two old geezers, whose sense of adventure is restricted to bicycling all the way to the neighbouring village to buy smoked eel, is simply not as enticing to a young mind as a young girl with carrot-coloured hair, the strength to lift a horse, a chest of gold coins, a father who is an island king, and who in general lives her life to the full every day.
”There exists only two exemplars of this species of geezer, and they should have been protected� (p. 187; reviewer's own translation.) That is how the brothers Henning and Albert Andersson, the protagonist duo of this tale, is described by their good friend, Olof Ardenkrantz. (Olof also happens to be their benevolent landowner, and a humorous opposite to the introverted brothers.) And he's quite right, of course. While the Scandinavian countryside is home to many a set of siblings who grew old together rather than marry, and whose withdrawn lives has made them out of tune with the larger world, each of them is usually affected in different ways by their isolation, making each of their self-contained universes into something unique. And the Andersson brothers are unique indeed, to the point that they become a bit of an enigma to most others in the village. Their reluctance to associate much with anyone else is probably largely to blame for this impression, but then there are also all the odd things the brothers would say or do. Strangest of all would be the recent event when two police officers discovered crop-circles in the rapeseed field below their cottage � why would beings from space visit those two recluses? � and the brothers claimed that two women stepped out of the craft that they saw. Big things are about to happen in their otherwise sleepy village, that much is certain, but the outcome is anyone's guess.
This tale is set close to the southernmost tip of Sweden, in an area called Skåne (known as Scania in English.) The area has long held an identity of its own and their Danish influenced dialect is as different from Stockholmian Swedish as Scottish is from British. It is usually with a sense of pride that someone declares that they are Skånsk/Scanian, and it is with affect that they describe their home. It is with the same infatuation that the area is described in Rapsbaggarna, with celebration and admiration of its idiosyncrasy, and we readers get to be introduced to and included in the magic of the place. We are left under an enchantment: We now know, understand, and appreciate their pride. This achievement may be considered a relic from the Romanticism, and indeed this tale would have been a classic if it had dated from that time. But the idea of sharing the beauty of one's home area, has no reason to die simply because it no longer serves to consolidate the local identity, which was the original purpose of the Romanticism. It also serves to enamour the readers, making them care not just for the characters but also the fate of their home, and this feeling is evoked in abundance by this tale.
The novel was never translated to English; beyond the Swedish original there seems to be no other editions than a Danish and a Norwegian one. (As a side note, this review is based on the Norwegian translation, Rapsgubbene, and not the original.) There are many possible reasons that could explain why it never spread further, but my guess is that publishers outside of Scandinavia probably consider the tale to be too Scandinavian to be of interest to their audiences. This reviewer believes that this argument must be wrong, especially since the two strongest aspects of this tale is the endearment of its characters, which is a universally appreciable trait, and its ability to place the reader firmly in Skåne and leave them with the impression that they were really there. I believe it possible to serve this novel to a much wider audience than Northern Europe, and I believe this wider audience would have no problem appreciating it. Authors like Burberry (The Elegance of the Hedgehog) have after all made very successful forays into the same genre from their ends of the world. Easy reading with low levels of drama is a very welcome break from a world that seems to get more and more dramatic as time passes, yet there seems to be so few who ply the trade of this genre. As such I believe there should be plenty of room for Rapsbaggarna, also amongst a worldwide audience.

I had heard good things about the book, and I guess I expected something more.. The book was a little boring, since its really just about the two brothers who isn’t the smartest guys by the way, and the gossip that goes around in the town. The brothers are straight up disgusting at times and I wrinkled my nose quite a lot (Truth be told, I’m a bit of a prude, so it might be worse for me?) but I found it hard to really like the main characters because, come on they blow their noses in the same rack cloth they use to clean their table and wash their ”down under section� in the same water they use for their dishes�
However, the book made me smile, even giggle a few times � and I do believe the book have a unique charm to it, and the book is very well written.

Merci à Arnstein Pettersen d'avoir écrit une très bonne critique sur ce livre, sur ŷ. Elle m'a aidée dans ma compréhension du livre, et a certainement contribué au plaisir de lire. Au fond, au lieu de lire ma critique, je vous conseille plutôt celle d'Arnstein!

Au début de ma lecture, j'aimais bien lire, mais j'étais désorientée en même temps. Qu'est-ce que je lisais? Une parodie du roman rural, avec un châtelain et son épouse quasi parfaits, et des gens pauvres mais heureux qui travaillent pour eux ? Un roman lent, sans aucun sens? En plus, je n'aimais pas particulièrement les personnages. Ils m'irritaient même régulièrement. Etait-ce de l'humour ou étais-ce sérieux? En même temps, je me suis rendu compute lentement que l'histoire ce passe dans la période avant qu'il n'y avait des ordinateurs, aucun téléphone mobile non plus dans l'histoire, mais des fax.
Roman descriptif
Arnstein Pettersen a expliqué que le livre est, à part humoristique, purement descriptif. Nous faisons connaissance de deux frères qui vieillissent ensemble, à la campagne. A ce qu'il paraît, il y a en a beaucoup ainsi dans la campagne scandinavienne. Et certainement dans la période avant les ordinateurs. Ils ou elles gardaient les principes de leurs parents, voir de leur grands-parents, semblent issus d'une autre époque et veulent surtout que tout reste comme ça.
Roman humoristique
C'est un roman légèrement humoristique. Pas énormément. Beaucoup de choses qui pourraient faire rire, sont au fond purement descriptives, réalistes. Et ce qui fait rire, est bien difficile pour les francophones, car l'humour scandinavien est loin du nôtre. Pour moi, c'étaient des blagues 'théoriques'. Je connais leur humour, j'en ai entendu parler, mais... il ne me fait pas rire. Pourtant j'aimais bien découvrir leur humour un peu mieux. Rire de ce dont ils rient :).

- la lecture lente, le rythme lent, le fait qu'il ne se passe quasi rien dans la première partie du livre.
- apprendre comment des gens vieux et pauvres se débrouillent pour survivre, aussi bien physiquement que mentalement. Je pense que beaucoup de lecteurs aiment découvrir cet aspect.
- la nature. Bien qu'il n'y ait pas énormément de descirptions de la nature, tout le livre respire l'air de la campagne, il y a tout le temps des petits détails, et on se rend compte que l'auteur aime la nature.
- découvrir comment des gens d'une autre culture regardent le monde, regarder par leurs yeux, découvrir leurs pensées, leur mode de vie. La découverte de leur sens de l'humour était difficile, mais valait la peine.
Je n'ai pas toujours aimé
La lecture lente me semblait parfois trop détaillée. Ainsi, dans une phrase comme 'Il s'arrêta net et lorsque le bruit se répéta, il tourna la tête avec inquiétude pour en déterminer la source.' Au début de la phrase, un peu suspens. Puis la lenteur commence, il tourne la tête, bon, il est inquiet, bon, mais je savais bien qu'il voulait déterminer la source du bruit et qu'il faisait tout ça 'pour en déterminer la source'. Bon, cela ne dérangeait pas outre mesure.
Le dénouement, mon étonnement
Je lis partout sur ŷ que la fin est légère aussi, et j'en suis très étonnée, je la trouve très lourde à digérer.
Si on pense au fait que ce livre est descriptif, donc réaliste, et qu'il ne s'agit pas de séduire le lecteur avec une histoire, il faut bien avouer que la fin est réaliste. Mais je ne la trouve pas drôle.
C'est courageux de Mirobole éditions d'avoir publié ce livre, car il parle d'une situation spécifique pour la Scandinavie et il y a de l'humour, oui, mais c'est un humour et une mentalité typiques pour les pays nordiques / pour la Scandinavie. Pas tous les lecteurs sont prêts à voir le monde autrement, ce livre n'a d'ailleurs pas été traduit dans beaucoup de langues.

Dans Colza Mécanique, j'ai retrouvé tout ce qui avait fait la saveur et le succès d'Aphrodite et vieilles dentelles ! Les deux héros, deux vieux frères, sont attachants et les suivre durant cette courte page de leur vie est un délice :D

Ljudbok
Varför har jag inte läst denna tidigare, har stått i hyllan i många år. Borde blivit en storsäljare i feelgood genren. Har alla ingredienser och dessutom skönt befriad från romantik.
Rekommenderas för en feelgood stund.
Att dessutom Stefan Sauk stigit i mina ögon enormt då han läser den på allra bästa sätt är ett plus för ljudboken istället för att läsa.

Comment est-ce possible de passer un excellent moment de lecture dans un roman où il ne passe pas grand-chose, surtout durant les 100 premières pages où nous faisons connaissance avec les deux personnages principaux que sont les deux frères Andersson : Henning et Albert, respectivement 68 et 73 ans ??
Sans doute le côté satyre sociale, l’humour, la finesse des différents portraits brossés dans ces 251 pages.
On ressent bien le côté rural de ce petit village de Suède, avec son épicière toujours en train de râler sur tout et de colporter des ragots, elle qui est si crédule.
Du côté de nos deux papys célibataires, c’est pas l’hygiène qui prime, mais l’humour et les relations tranquilles avec le châtelain du coin, auquel ils donnent un petit coup de main dès qu’il a besoin d’eux.
Après cette installation de nos compères et de leur vie tranquille dans ce petit village, ça va bouger un peu avec l’ouverture d’un centre de désintoxication pour femmes alcooliques et l’apparition d’un crop circle dans un champ de colza, comme si un engin extra-terrestre s’y était posé ! Mulder, rapplique vite !!
Quand tout le monde court dans tous les sens et devient un peu zinzin, seuls nos deux frères conservent leur flegme, voulant juste être en paix et pouvoir pisser dehors tranquille.
J’ai aimé le côté philosophique de ces deux vieux qui vivent chichement, dans un total dénuement, presque, mais qui ne demande rien de plus que du tabac à chiquer et de la nourriture simple. Et surtout, de partir ensemble pour le grand voyage car si un frère partait avant l’autre, ce serait une catastrophe pour le survivant.
Un roman qui ne possède pas un rythme haletant, dans lequel il ne se passe rien d’exceptionnel, mais un roman qui fleure bon la campagne suédoise et le feel-good car des papets de la sorte, on aimerait en croiser plus sur sa route.
Prévoyez tout de même les lingettes désinfectantes, ici, on se cure les ongles avec la fourchette avant de la piquer dans la viande�.
Une belle petite leçon de vie de la part de deux vieux qui vivent avec le minimum alors que nous, il nous fait le maximum pour survivre.

Un vrai plaisir de lecture qui fait du bien par où il passe et qui se lit tranquille, avec un ou deux mojitos dans la main.

Encore deux célibataires dans une province de Suède.
Deux hommes, cette fois, peu à l’aise avec le ménage, mais ils ont le coeur sur la main.
C’est ce qui plaît au châtelain à qui appartient la maison dans laquelle ils habitent sur la propriété. Ce qui arrange ces deux vieux garçons qui aiment bien les décolletés de la châtelaine.
Mais ils sont contrariés, Henning et Albert parce que dans leur ancienne maison de famille va s’installer un centre de désintoxication pour femmes.
Autour de ces deux taiseux se met en place un méli-mélo entre arrivée d’OVNI, spécialistes américains et centre de désintoxication de jour.
Encore une fois, j’ai passé un bon moment en compagnie de ces deux vieux messieurs.
Une auteure que j’apprécie de plus en plus.
L’image que je retiendrai :

En hyggelig, men absolut ubetydelig bog i litterær forstand. To gamle brødre bliver midtpunkt i en historie om korncirkler, mens deres gamle barndomshjem omdannes til behandlingshjem for alkoholiserede kvinder. Stemningen med de to brødre er lidt som i filmen Englegård, men her er ikke rigtigt noget på spil.

En meget hyggelig lille bog om 2 brødre som lever i en lille svensk by, som de også er opvokset i.
Brødrene er portrætteret som gammeldags men rare - og lidt specielle.

Gullig men tråkig bok. Lugnt tempo och rara människor, men allt för långsam i tempot för min smak. Det händer verkligen ingenting - och jag väntade hela tiden att bröderna skulle städa upp i sitt smutsiga hus, men inte ens det hände.

Glimmerbøsserne er en hjertevarm historie. En stille og rolig men charmerende beretning om to ældre brødre og hvad der kan ske når den berømte fjer bliver til fem høns - en bog man bliver i godt humør af.

Bon livre. J'ai aimé les descriptifs et les personnages principaux. Le mode de vie des 2 frères étaient vraiment intéressant et même passionnant à suivre malgré la légèreté de l'histoire.

Such an enjoyable read about two 70 year old brothers living the simple life on a farm in Southern Sweden. Life doesn't stay simple though when the reclusive brothers are mixed up in a possible alien crop circle phenomenon and helping a young woman from a local alcohol rehab facility. The brothers have a quaint and sweet sincerity in their dealings with mass media invasion and curious locals and the gossip gets worse and worse! This author also wrote Villa Bonita which I have at home in my bookshelf, will definitely have to read more books by this delightful author.

En herlig historie om to gamle ungkarle, der bor sammen i et primitivt hus uden moderne faciliteter, men som alligevel trives og nyder de små glæder i livet. Deres fredlige liv bliver udfordret af en række hændelser, som de på forhånd sikkert helst havde været foruden, men som alligevel beriger deres liv. En skøn bog.

Fruktansvärt dåligt skriven. Författaren använder presens och imperfekt om vartannat. Pressar in fattigdoms-markörer de förste tre sidorna så att läsaren verkligen ska begripa att de båda bröderna som är huvudpersoner har ont om pengar. Tror aldrig jag läst något sämre bland utgivna böcker. Typiskt ihopsnickrad i vågen efter tidigare populära böcker. Skamligt.

Morsomt og underholdende om et et eldre brødrepar som lever sitt daglige liv i et enkelt hus og roter seg opp i mer og mindre trivielle situasjoner. En koselig bok som ikke krever så mye av leseren, men absolutt brukbar som humørløfter.

It's cute and charming and the elderly brothers make me smile - but it never catches on like the first book Potensgivarna.
I'd recommend this book to anyone, I enjoyed reading it, but in the end I can only reward it a strong 3.

Med lågmäld humor och jordnära värme skildras livödet för två farbröder som hamnar mitt i en fars som de är både oförstående inför och roas hejdlöst av. Lättläst, mysig och med härligt beskrivningar av både hem och miljöer.
