Romain Fornier lost his reason for living when his daughter was kidnapped and murdered. He used a cop's gun to mete out his own justice and spent the next few years in prison. Once he was freed, he returned to his Cajun roots in small-town Louisiana. But now he learns that he might have killed the wrong man.
Jasmine Stratford, a psychological profiler, is convinced his daughter's killer is still alive -- and that she and Romain have something in common. She believes the same man kidnapped her sister, Kimberly, sixteen years ago.
What happens next?
Jasmine is determined to track him down when she receives an anonymous package, postmarked New Orleans -- the bracelet she gave Kimberly for her eighth birthday. She approaches Romain because she knows he can help her... if he chooses.
But searching for the man who irrevocably changed both their lives means they have to rise to a killer's challenge: stop me.
It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s bestselling author career.
“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away, Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.
However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a creative bone in her body. In school, math and science were her best subjects, and when it came time to pick a major in college, she chose business.
Abandoning her academic scholarship to Brigham Young University at the age of 20 in order to get married and start a family, Brenda dabbled in commercial real estate, then became a loan officer.
“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book, Brenda admits. “I learned how to write by reading what others have written. The best advice for any would-be author: read, read, read.
Brenda sold her first book, and the rest is history. Now a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she continues to publish two or three novels a year, in a variety of genres.
Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are the proud parents of five children—three girls and two boys. Now that they are empty-nesters, she spends her free time babysitting her two grandchildren.
When she’s not with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising money for diabetes research. To date, she's raised almost $2.6 million. Her youngest son, Thad, has diabetes, and Brenda is determined to help him and others like him. She also enjoys traveling, watching sporting events and biking--she rides an amazing 20 miles every day!
Second book in Novak's The Last Stand series. I'm giving it the same rating as the first book, 4-stars, but I liked it more than the first one. While the first one was borderline 3-4 stars, this one solid 4 stars.
Like the first book, this one focuses on The Last Stand victims support organization and the three women who founded it. This book features Jasmine Stratford. Sixteen years earlier, her little sister was kidnapped while Jasmine babysat her, completely destroying her family. The sister was never found and Jasmine has never stopped feeling guilty or wanting to know what became of her sister.
Now, she's received a strange package in the mail from someone who had to be involved in the disappearance of her sister. Desperate to know more, she goes to New Orleans, where the package was mailed from. Her research leads her to Romain Fornier, a brooding loner who has shut himself away from the world after his 10-year-old daughter was kidnapped, molested, then murdered. When the killer was let off on a technicality, Romain reacted on a surge of emotion and spent the next 18 months in jail. He wants nothing to do with what Jasmine is telling him - that he may have killed the wrong man. But the knowledge that the person who killed his little girl might still be out there overrules his feelings. He and Jasmine team up to find out the truth in a case that takes more turns than anyone could have expected.
Stop Me is a little bit different type of story than Trust Me because this one is a whodunit because you don't know who the ultimate ringleader is. Though I have to admit I had a pretty good idea who it would turn out to be early on. The misdirection was a little too obvious so I looked to the less possible option. And I was right. But it was still a well-told story. I wanted to keep reading to see where the story would go next. And there was a surprise or two as well. I wasn't expecting how things ended up with one of the secondary characters.
The romance in this one was a bit more solid than the first book. I loved Romain. He's the ultimate in tragic heroes - a wife who died of cancer, a daughter brutally murdered, going to prison for taking justice into his own hands. Even though he's a bit surly, he's a very likable character. The chemistry between him and Jasmine is great and the romance is more developed than between Skye and David from Trust Me. I just felt the romantic angle more.
But like Trust Me the ending was a bit weak. Not as much so, but I still didn't come away feeling all that satisfied. For me, there just needed to be a scene that solidified the romance between Jasmine and Romain. And I was left wanting to know a few things after the book ended. There were some things I wanted to know how they turned out.
I was also a bit disappointed that the book felt rather disconnected from the first book. The Last Stand organization gets a lot of mentions and whatnot, and the other characters get a little face time, but I felt as if they were just there. Skye (book 1) had a baby and it's never even said whether it was a boy or a girl. So I would have liked a little more inter-connectedness between the books.
But overall, I liked the book. I zipped through it pretty quickly. This book, and the series, is something those who like the mid-level intensity romantic suspenses would probably like.
3 ½ stars. If you’re in the mood for romantic suspense, this is pretty good, a little better than average.
There were a couple of weak places, but acceptable. I think it’s fine to have a trusted person turn-out to be bad, but here it happens more than once which bothered me a little. Probably because I recently read another book by this author that had many cops, mayor, and others - supposedly good but in truth were bad guys. She used the surprise of many bad guys as a way to create mystery and suspense instead of traditional methods. Every so often she would surprise us by showing another character to be one of the bad guys. I felt the author was overdoing it in that book, so when something similar happened here I was reminded of that and it wasn’t as appealing as it could have been.
Jasmine and Romain are sexually drawn to each other. After they have sex, he insults her. His reason is that he is trying to live life as a hermit and doesn’t want to feel things. So she now has a wall between them. This causes conflict between them for a long time. I like conflict between a couple, but this wasn’t the best. The sex meant a lot to him, but he lied calling it a meaningless f*** to distance himself.
There was one instance of stupidity. Heroine goes to killer’s location without notifying Romain where she is going.
Jasmine is psychic, so that gives her leads. It was done well enough, but psychic stories might not appeal to some.
Overall I didn’t find it special or different, but it was good enough to keep my interest.
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 432 pages. Swearing language: strong but not often used. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: 3. Setting: mostly current day New Orleans area, Louisiana. Copyright: 2008. Genre: paranormal romantic suspense.
I liked the story, but there were inconsistencies. A character would say something and then the next moment say it think something totally different. I’m not talking about would be liars.
Here is an example. Jasmine decides to drive somewhere. She realizes she only has enough gas for a one way trip there. And because her purse was stolen, she doesn’t have money to get gas to go back. When she arrives at her destination and the person isn’t there, her thought is I guess I can drive back to the city. Really??? She just said she didn’t have enough gas or money to make it back???
And this happens enough in the story to draw me out of it.
Then there is Jasmine out on her own trying to put a name to a face. When she gets that name, she doesn’t immediately contact the person whose helping her because duh, plot device. If she did which would be the believable reaction, the trouble she finds herself in wouldn’t happen. It’s a cheap plot device that shows the author is incapable of coming up with a more plausible way to get the character in the trouble she needed her to be in.
And the HEA - I didn’t understand her move. He didn’t work and she had a job. Why did she move move and quit her job. How will they survive. It just seemed weird to me.
Also side note, in book one, what’s her name was pregnant. Why would we find out if it was a girl or boy? Why did Jasmine hide from her supposed besties her trouble?
But despite it all, it’s actually more interesting than the Lisa Jackson books I’ve read lately. These aren’t carbon copies of themselves so far at least. So I’ll soldier on especially since they are available with the romance package.
The same editing existed as the last. The end of a chapter would overlap with the new chapter and I was never sure if something was cut out.
The narrator was the same as last and her voices in this story didn’t bother me like last.
4 solid stars for the second book in the Last Stand series. I always hate leaving the characters of one book behind when I start another book. It is definitely no different when I'm reading a series. I always hope to find glimpses of the previous characters in the next book of a series. I did get that glimpse, just a glimpse, like in a couple of phone conversations. I wanted more, but quickly got into the new story and then the new characters took over. In this series, the characters of the second book are stronger than the first. As much as I hated leaving Skye and David behind, I quickly fell into the lives of Romain and Jasmine.
The mystery, suspense and action in Stop Me is more intense than that of Trust Me. I knew that I had figured out who the bad guys were early on. Until I realized I didn't have it figured out. The twists and turns kept coming until the very last chapter. I was vindicated in the end, but it was close!
Jasmine's little sister was taken from their home, while she was babysitting her, at the age of eight. Her family quickly fell apart. Jasmine vowed to never give up the search for Kimberly. Fast forward sixteen years, Jasmine has psychic powers that she uses in profiling for the FBI and other agencies. She's been on "America's Most Wanted" where she publicly vows to never give up her search for her sister. Then, one day she receives a small package containing her sister's bracelet and a note simply saying "Stop me." With this new lead, she begins her search in New Orleans.
Romain lost his reason for living four years ago and now all he does is exist. His wife, his high school sweetheart, died of cancer six years ago, leaving Romain to raise their daughter, Adele. Suddenly, Adele is missing and the search is on. It ends when Adele's body is found in a public place. Throughout the trial, there is irrefutable evidence to convict the perpetrator, but he gets off on a technicality. On the way out of the courthouse, Romain, in a moment of passion that he doesn't remember clearly, kills the man and goes to prison. He is now out, trying to carve out an existence for himself in the bayous where he does't have to deal with society unless he wants to. Then, out of nowhere, Jasmine shows up at his door and he is thrust back into life. Ready, or not.
The romance in this book is second to the suspense and mystery. This is a book you'll find hard to put down; you will consume it. The relationships between characters are strong, the characters themselves are strong and the overall plot line is compelling. Now, I'm off to find out Sheridan's story in Watch Me.
As a guy, I don't really care for all the romance in my novels, but many in the reading audience do want those moments with their characters. With that said, the story was suspenseful at times and keeps you interested long enough to want more. You start to wonder if Jasmine will ever find out what happened to her sister. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading cold cases.
Jasmine was smart and sassy. I loved that she never stopped using her brains even when she acted ‘girlie. Romaine was standard tall dark and handsome but not repulsive or annoying. Even though I personally hated his name. The secondary characters were interesting and different enough to keep me alert as to who the bad guy was. The mystery was good solid fare. The bad guy was one sick puppy.
I enjoyed the ending and I love to be able to saying I have nothing to complain about.
The book started out OK, although I was hesitant to read it because I learned from the previous book that the main character in this one had psychic abilities. I normally don't read books with psychic aspects in them just because they get weird, and quite frankly I like when people solve puzzles without freaky mind powers.
I ended up liking Jasmine, even with her gobbledegook powers. She wasn't always "reading" things, but she did crawl into Romains dream which I felt was a huge invasion of his thoughts. The names could have been better, Jasmine reminded me of Princess Jasmine from Disneys Aladdin, and Romain reminded me of my lunch salad.
The suspense was good - in the beginning. The story sort of lost its appeal to me once the mystery started falling into place.
I liked the romance. The attraction made its appearance early on, which is typical of these types of books. Albeit a tad unbelievable when compared to reality, but that's what makes reading fiction fun. I like when the romantic and sexual tension builds through the story, it gives the reader something to root for when the suspense takes a wrong turn.
Bottom line, not my favorite, but I will read Brenda Novak in the future. I like that she mainly writes series, I've really grown to like series since most times you don't have to wait another year for the new release. Authors like Brenda Novak seem to release the additional series titles within months of each other, which satisfies my impatient nature. Another note, these books are part of a series, but they can easily stand alone. Its characters travel on to another story and any minute details that are brought up in the next book are nicely explained and clarified for the reader. You won't be lost or feeling like you are missing something because you didn't follow the series. That's a bonus as well.
I enjoyed how dark this book was and the New Orleans/swamp setting was a neat location. The setting just seemed to make everything creepier. I thought the romantic leads had a lot of depth in this book and I loved the love story aspect of it. Unfortunately, there were two plot aspects that were extremely unbelievable to me which really had the effect of pulling me out of the story.
1) I liked the psychic aspect of the story but I found it incredibly unbelievable that someone could become a profiler without a college degree. Everytime they mentioned the FBI using Jasmine's services I had to stop and laugh because I just don't think that happens in real life. 2) The whole question of whether Romain had actually killed Moreau or not. The incident was on tape and there were dozens of witnesses. I just didn't believe that this would have been in question.
Unfortunately, these were big enough issues to pull me out of the story but overall I thought it was an enjoyable read.
Just as I finally got over the creepiness of Hanover House, I turn around and read Save Me. Although I do admit to guessing THE identity fairly quickly, there were a lot of twists and turns to make me doubt my decision. The romance is sweet which is something I never thought I'd say about this author's books, but the romance was a sideline to the story itself so it fit. So this book did not creep me out nearly as much as Hanover House but it was a good read and read quickly. Now I just need to go turn off all the lights I turned on trying to read and stay sane! Thank you, Brenda, for doing what you do . . . so well!
The Last Stand series continues just as excitingly as the first part already suggested. Brenda Novak again delivers an exciting story that I couldn't put down.
Long story short The second part of the Last Stand series is about Jasmine and Romain. Jasmine's sister was kidnapped many years ago. Now, more than 15 years later, she finds her kidnapped sister's bracelet in a package addressed to her - together with a message written in blood. She decides to search again for her sister. The search leads her to Romain. Romain's daughter was kidnapped and killed several years ago. However, the perpetrator could not be proven to have committed the crime, so Romain took matters into his own hands and killed the perpetrator. When his daughter was found, a message written in blood was also accompanied with iht. For Jasmine, it is clear that these cases must be connected - so she sets off to Romain, who is anything but enthusiastic about having to deal with the past again.
What I liked This book also contained a very exciting story. I guessed early on who the perpetrator might be. But through her narrative style Novak skillfully manages to dissuade one from the premonition The story is written very excitingly. As a reader, I wanted to know how it ends and what happens on the way to the end. I also liked the two main characters Jasmine and Romain. Romain has an incredibly sad past and still manages to get involved with Jasmine. He even takes her home with him at Christmas because he thinks it will do her good.
What I didn’t like What I particularly like about reading a series is that you can continue to accompany the characters of the previous books. Unfortunately, the characters from the first part of the series were only rarely featured in this book. I would have been happy to read more about Skye and David. Unfortunately, I didn't feel there was much connection between the books, which is a shame. At some points, the plot was a bit illogical and contradictory. For example, why don't Jasmine and Romain go back to Sacramento together? As a reader this is incomprehensible and the background is not explained. I also did not understand why Jasmine goes to the perpetrator all alone without telling Romain about what she found out. By doing so she deliberately puts herself in danger. I reckoned that the story will be even more about Jasmine's special ability and for that to play a bigger role. Unfortunately, in this case, Jasmine's visionary ability had hardly any effect - it affected her personal relationship with Romain much more than the case of her lost sister. Again, I missed the romance. It was stronger and the relationship between the two main characters was better described than in the previous part. But also here I would have wished for a stronger ending. Jasmine and Romain didn't get a worthy conclusion to their relationship and the ending is rather rushed. I would have expected this again from the epilogue. But unfortunately this was again not the case.
This was again a very exciting book that captivated me and encouraged me to continue reading. The romance was again a bit too short, but it was already much better than the first part. Therefore I give 4 points.
The book started out OK, although I was hesitant to read it because I learned from the previous book that the main character in this one had psychic abilities. I normally don't read books with psychic aspects in them just because they get weird, and quite frankly I like when people solve puzzles without freaky mind powers.(i don't care for supernatural)

*** The storyline was never dull, and was always unpredictable, and for me thats the best kind. Jasmine and Romain are thrust together when Jaz gets a note from her sisters kidnapper, that connects her case to the kidnapping and murder of Romain's daughter. No matter how much either of them tried to deny the attraction between them, it was impossible to ignore. Throughout this whole book I kept getting more and more excited as Romain and Jaz got close to finding the people who destroyed their lives, and I can honestly say I never would've guessed the ending! Overall though this book was emotionally gripping, and thrilling, and I'm so glad I found up Brenda Novak some time ago. I even use audible when my library doesn't have them. (like this series was not avail at the libr)
This book started out strong but fizzled quick. I felt it was drawn out and tough for me to get through. I will warn you there are a lot of murders in this story.
I did not like how the reality, dream, and psychic stuff rolled into one. You weren't sure where you were at times. For example, Romain is at home in his own bed dreaming of having sex with Jasmine and Jasmine is at her hotel room sleeping and feeling all of Romain's dream of their sexual act. Then she wakes up startled thinking it really happened. That was a bit far fetched for me. Also, after their first time of having sex he is very insulting to her about their encounter.
I hate when women do really stupid stuff. Like, Jasmine goes to this guys house by herself knowing that he is a murderer. Then she is thrown into a basement and locked inside with a dead body. Who does that? Does she learn her lesson? Of course not. Later on in the story she goes to another mans house knowing he's a murderer and he captures her. Throughout this story she does some really dangerous and stupid stuff.
So half way through you can figure out who the ring leader is which makes it unbelievable that Romain continues to believe this guy.
So wrapping this up to the epilogue. I was so annoyed that Jasmine was upset that her sister didn't try to get back to them. You gotta be kidding me. Kimberly was 8 years old when she was kidnapped and Bev told Jasmine that they kept telling Kimberly the same story of what happened to her family. At 8 years old and dealing with all adults what did Jasmine expect a little girl to do?
Then Jasmine gives up her friends, home and job to move to New Orleans and she barely knows Romain. Romain doesn't have a job so why isn't he moving to California instead.
This is book 2 of the Last Stand series however it had nothing to do with The Last Stand. Like I said earlier, the story was long and the wrap up was so quick and a huge disappointment.
Being a Louisiana native, even though new to Brenda Novak, I was pulled swiftly into this tale.... & with the exception of a glaringly, frustrating point that should’ve been caught by anyone who’s ever been to/read about/seen movies about New Orleans, was a great read with a steady pace & inviting characters. The frustration that drove me mad every time I read the phrase, you ask?? THE CELLAR!!!?! I just had a problem getting past that.... because you don’t have cellars pretty much anywhere in LA, but especially not in South LA?! Most of this part of the state has such a high water table that any kind of subterranean construction in untenable. Even the cemeteries are above ground because bodies buried any deeper than about three feet would literally just float up. I’ve lived in most Southern states, with the most “northern time being in Arkansas & basements/cellars aren’t even common around there, at a much higher elevation. These aren’t difficult scenarios to fact check, y’all - come on?! Or even if such a glaringly improbable fact had even been addressed as .... the Moreau house was built on an ancient burial ground/former dump/just-plain-bizarre geographical wonder, hence the feasibility of a cellar....
Ok..... breathing deeply.... all of that being said, I am actively pursuing other books by this author and look forward to her future ones. With the exception of that crazy bit that obviously drove me wacky, I am enjoying this author and definitely would recommend this book With a warning for anyone I recommended it to ;-)
Although I read this series out of order, I was still able to follow the action and the characters. In this book, Jasmine Stratford is trying to find out what happened to her sister. Sixteen years ago, Kimberly was kidnapped from their home and since Jasmine was babysitting for the nine year old, she feels responsible and cannot move on until she discovers the truth. Traveling to New Orleans during the Christmas holidays, Jasmine seems alone and a little lost in her quest until she teams up with Romain Fournier, a man who lost his wife and daughter to the crazed killer who took Kimberly. Romain is a totally lost soul who has to come out of his self-enforced isolation in order to help Jasmine. The action was non-stop, although the story did drag somewhat in the middle. There were a lot of really bad villains and there were also some people who just seemed to be caught up in the evil. The identity of the killer/kidnapper was a big surprise and the ending was satisfactory, with all of the loose ends tied together.
I own a copy of this book and was not required to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I loved this book just like all the ones in The Last Stand series. This was the second one about Jasmine Stratford who is looking for her sister’s killer. Jasmine sister has been missing for 16 years and she feels guilty because her sister was kidnapped when she was supposed to be babysitting her. She gets a package with her sister bracelet anonymously that has her going to New Orleans where she runs into Romain Fornier who’s daughter was kidnapped and murder by the man he thought he killed. Jasmine thinks her sisters kidnapper is the same person who killed Romain’s daughter. They exchange information and start looking for the killer. I thought this was a great suspenseful book. It had romance between Jasmine and Romain who both are lost souls. Brenda Novak books are so powerful and intensely interesting that keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to find out who really is the killer and still has HAE. On to the next book in the series.
Romance antara Jasmine & Romain so-so aja. Kedua pertanyaan tersebut, jawabannya : ya. 3,6

I came for the murders and the kidnapping of young children and all i got was sex, sex, sex, s e x.
I'm pretty mad because everything else was actually good, i enjoyed it but god, the amount of sex definitely ruined it, everytime i started having a good time reading this. I was, at first, disappointed by the "big reveal" of the kidnapper, if you can say big reveal because the name was literally just thrown in there randomly but the more i read, the more i liked the whole story behind it. I actually ended up pretty invested, trying to make up theories of who and why!
I'm not going to keep on going with this series (because apparently it's a series? and this is the second book? what?) but overrall, i enjoyed this book. Would recommend if you're into (lots of) (too much of) romance and pretty, pretty dark stuff.
This is the second book in The Last Stand series and it was absolutely great. Jasmine Stratford was babysitting her little sister when the sister was kidnapped sixteen years ago. She never have up hope of finding her but the trail turned cold until she received a package in the mail that contained her sister's bracelet. The package led her to New Orleans and another kidnapping and murder that had happened four years ago. Romain Fornier thought he had killed his daughter's killer after his trial but now nothing is as it seems. This a wonderful read and a very exciting book with quite a twist at the end.
Jasmine Stratford's sister went missing 16 years ago. Jasmine currently runs The Last Stand with her 2 bestfriends. Jasmine receives a package at work with her sisters jewelry in it post marked from New Orleans with a blood written note that says stop me. She takes off trying to solve the mystery of her sister that tore her family apart. After arriving and doing some investigating she learns that Romain Forniers daughter went missing and was later found dead with the same signature with blood. She's convinced the two are connected. Can Jasmine and Romain solve this mystery and finally know what happened to her sister, or will they become the next victims?
Sinister, suspenseful, thrilling read of abduction, murder and romance
I haven't read a suspense tale that drew me as deeply into it as Stop Me in years. I couldn't stop reading because each step that brought Jasmine closer to resolving the mystery of her sister's disappearance, brought me right along with her. Novak has a gift for weaving intricate tales involving a large cast of characters, plot twists, sleight of hand, and so many details that keep the reader bound to the pages. Her storytelling is masterful. Not my first Brenda Novak story and certainly not my last.
