Srimad Bhagavadgita: with English Translation and Transliteration # 1411
Shrimadbhagvadgita is the divine discourse of Bhagvan Shri Krishna spreading light for a purposeful human life. The book contains Sanskrit text with English translation, glory of Shrimadbhagvadgita, contents of principal subjects of each chapter of Shrimadbhagvadgita. The book also carries some essays regarding attainment of God through renunciation.

I acknowledge that one needs to believe in God without a hint of doubt to enjoy Bhagavadagit truly, I am afraid I am not a believer yet and therefore read the book out of curiosity.
My review is not intended to hurt any religious sentiments.
I think it's way too repetitive. The same message is expressed in several shlokas again and again worded differently each time. While there were some key takeaways on how life should be lived in pursuit of God, knowledge or actions (performance of natural innate duties) without expectation of its fruit, that seems difficult but appealing, I couldn't come to terms with the emphasis on Lord Krishna, his supremeness, his glories and how worshipping him is the best. That is because Hinduism flaunts its polytheism with a great diversity of Gods and goddesses. It sort of felt like he is superior to Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva which interfered with my notion (and others too maybe ?) of the three Lords responsible for this world equally and performing complementary duties. Another point that was difficult to digest was how people who are bad or of demonic disposition are cast life after life into demonical wombs in this world. It is as if their fate is already decided and there is no chance to be absolved or make amends.

I found this translation sometimes rather clunky, with at times needlessly obscure vocabulary. However, the bilingual format with transliteration as well as Sanskrit is useful.

You can actually read Sanskrit shlokas because of the transliteration made it so easy. There might be more of Bhagvadgita but the summery of it was beautifully captured.

The English translation of this book is difficult to understand and contains several grammatical mistakes. This issue was significant enough that I had to abandon reading the book after about 60 pages. Gita Press should address this problem urgently and commission a new translation by a scholar proficient in fluent and lucid English.
For example, Chapter 2, Verse 29 is translated as:
"Hardly some rare enlightened person perceives this soul as marvellous, scarce another, likewise, speaks thereof as marvellous, and scarce another hears of it as marvellous, while there are some who know it not even on hearing it."
Chapter 3, Verse 35 reads:
"One's own duty, though devoid of merit, is preferable to the duty of another well performed. Even death in the performance of one's own duty brings blessedness: another's duty is fraught with fear."
As you can see, these translations are not easy to understand, and the sentence structure could be much improved.
As a result, I purchased "The Bhagavad Gita Comes Alive" by Jeffrey Armstrong. Its English is far better and much easier to understand compared to this version.

Bhagavadgeeta was in syllabus in my junior yoga class. My Guru is a very well read person in Sanskrit and Yoga. And this was suggested by him. Bhagavadgeeta cannot be understood in one read. Need to keep revisiting it. Word to word translation instead of elaborate explanations is the best thing about Gita Press.
