Barking Up the Wrong Tree

Rate this book
Things in Whynot, NC have gone to the dogs, and that’s just the way the town’s only veterinarian, Laken Mancinkus, likes it. No matter if she’s up when the rooster crows, or working until the cows come home, Laken never leaves an animal in need. So when a gorgeous Yankee comes begging for help herding some wily goats, Laken is up to the task.

Jake McDaniel is looking for a tax break, and what better way than to take up…farming? This ex-football player turned businessman turned unwitting goat farmer is up to his knees in goat drama. Runaway goats, dehydrated goats, and a baby goat that wants no one other than him, Jake needs more help than he cares to admit. Good thing the sexy veterinarian is right there to coach him on how to be a farmer. The only problem is, Laken’s not looking for anything more than a good time, while Jake is looking for his forever girl.

Will the baby goat, and Laken, be enough to get Jake to stay? Or will he take his tax break and hoof it back to Chicago? One thing is for certain…what happens on the farm doesn’t always stay on the farm.

When you find an author whose books bring you pure joy, you don’t let go. That’s exactly how I feel about Juliette Poe. After falling in love with her debut novel Ain’t He Precious?, I’ve never looked back.

Her books are everything I want in a romance: sweet, feel-good, funny, and utterly enjoyable. Every single one has been a HIT with me. I’m completely smitten with her characters, and the town of Whynot has absolutely charmed me.

In Barking Up the Wrong Tree, Laken Mancinkus is the woman to watch. She’s confident, self-assured, and not exactly looking for a relationship with Jake McDaniel. But the moment they lay eyes on each other, there’s an undeniable spark in the air. Laken’s professionalism and no-nonsense attitude leave a lasting impression on Jake, and after a night of attraction and fun, all bets are off.

What I adored about Jake and Laken was their open, no-pressure approach to their connection. They didn’t rush into labels or expectations—they just let things evolve naturally. This kind of laid-back attitude is so rare in romances today, and I absolutely loved it.

Jake and Laken were perfect for each other in so many ways. Despite their differences—she’s a country girl, and he’s a city boy—they shared similar values and luxuries in life, which became more apparent the more time they spent together.

Jake totally won me over with his down-to-earth nature and willingness to dive in and get his hands dirty when needed. And let’s not forget how utterly charming he was with his baby goat—swoon. From the very first chapter, I liked him, but the more I read, the more lovable he became. By the end of the book, I was all in.

Laken, on the other hand, is one of those characters with a tough outer shell and a can-do attitude, but underneath, she hides an insecurity that’s been weighing on her heart for far too long. I found her refreshingly candid and incredibly appealing—she’s my kind of woman.

One of the things I absolutely love about Juliette Poe’s books is her inclusion of additional POVs. Hearing from characters like the granddad (and this time, “Herman as well) adds so much heart to the story. It’s adorable and makes her books even more special. I can’t express how much happiness these stories bring me. Every time I start a new book by her, I can’t help but smile.

So, if you’re a fan of small-town charm, down-to-earth characters with plenty of sass, and family values that truly matter—Juliette Poe is your author!

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY!
Sweet and sexy with loads of feels. Barking up the Wrong Tree is the kind of story that charms, coaxing smiles and warm gooey feelings with its impeccable blend of fun banter, and sweet, sexy love.

What happens when a city boy shows up in the middle of the day at Laken Mancinkus favorite hangout asking for help to wrangle wayward goats? As the town’s only vet and utter animal lover, Laken goes to the rescue while ogling the handsome stranger never intending to get her heart caught up in his sexy city slicker pull.

Ex-football player now businessman, Jake McDaniel only wanted a tax break. He never expected he’d have emergency goat drama that required him to fly from Chicago to small-town Whynot to feed a baby goat that latched on to him. And he certainly didn’t expect to fall for the very attractive veterinarian who’s only interested in a fling while he’s looking to settle down... in the big city. Can these two seemingly opposites find a middle ground for their happily ever after?

I just loved everything about this story. So many moments that were utterly sweet and sexy (yes, I know I’ve mentioned this before but it’s true), the completely loveable characters from the grandpa to the hero and heroine to the dog! Oh how I loved the entries with Herman’s POV!

From the moment the laid eyes on each other Jake and Laken knew there were sparks between them and didn’t dilly-dally in acting on it. When a man like Jake wants something, he takes action and when he needs to go back to Whynot, he takes advantage and pursues Laken slyly and relentlessly, even though he never pushed a label. I really liked that they were both very communicative and open to see where their growing feelings led them.
“Why is there something so hot about a man showing tenderness to a small animal?

For his part, Jake is going directly to my book boyfriend list. He was absolutely charismatic to begin with, add the fact that he put his life on hold for a baby goat (how cute is that?!) and then add stuff like selfless, witty, understanding, a wonderful wooer, observant and yes, very very sexy. And Laken was a perfect fit for him, with a tough exterior that presented a challenge and big heart that gave Jake exactly what he was looking for.

Barking up the Wrong Tree is book #3 in the Sex and Sweet Tea series by Juliette Poe. It is a positively feel good contemporary romance bursting with fun and swoonyness. Told from various points of view, including Herman the dog and Pap’s. It ends with a happy ending.

Sawyer Bennett writing as Juliette Poe has become my newest obsession!!! Seriously, who wouldn’t want to get lost in a romance with all the feel good family vibes. I know that I do and that’s why I love the simplicity and playfulness of the Sex and Sweet Tea Series.

Barking Up the Wrong Tree is the third installment and most definitely can be read as a standalone. Do I recommend it? Of course not because the beauty of this book and series is getting lost with the townsfolk of WhyNot, NC and the Mancinkus family.

Laken Mancinkus is WhyNot’s only veterinarian. She loves her job and her family. Everything is going well for her except her love life. That pretty much is non-existent that is until WhyNot’s newest resident, Jake McDaniels comes barreling into her life.

a86e27f609671da4cc4a424f30703cJake is something special I’d come to crave and perhaps depend upon. His wit and humor. His care and sweetness. His hotness. Oh, man his hotness.

Jake McDaniels just bought a farm and in this farm, it has goats. Jake has no need for the goats since he mostly bought the farm for his business corporate tax break. And so when Jake’s newly acquired goats break free from their fenced compound, Jake desperately asked Laken to help him wrangle the goats back into the fence.

a86e27f609671da4cc4a424f30703cI told you we weren’t dating.”“And I told you it was fine if you keep telling yourself that, Doc.

Instead of a dog or cat bringing them together, Jake and Laken can thank the goats. As Jake and Laken begin to spend more time together, they soon form a romantic kind of relationship. But with his job in Chicago and hers in WhyNot, it leaves them with the only option of doing long distance. Will Laken and Jake’s new relationship be able to survive the distance? And will Laken be able to give up her job and move to Chicago to be with Jake? And what will happen to Jake’s baby goat?

Barking Up the Wrong Tree is your fast paced sweet, sexy, fun, and heartfelt romance. This book was just a sticky molasses of sugary romance done right that will leave you smiling like a fool. Did I also mention, all the characters of WhyNot brings forth a certain charm and entertainment to keep readers like myself smittened. So if you are looking for a romance that will make you smile and feel good then I suggest you pick up this book and the other books Juliette Poe has written. Trust me when I tell you, you will end up wanting a baby goat after reading this book.

Juliette Poe, pen name for Sawyer Bennett, created the most swoon worthy characters for this book. Laken was a sweet and sassy woman that was not afraid to share her opinion, and Jake was a new-to-the-South confused man that could be just as sweet mixed with some sexy. I loved seeing these characters get together and battle it out with one another.

This series has been a very light and fun read, and this book was no different. It's easy to feel the connection between the characters and it never fails to make me want more of them. While the stories are short I never get the sense that they're rushed and I'm always left feeling very satisfied.

What a wonderful, sweet and heartfelt read Barking Up the Wrong Tree by Juliette Poe turned out to be.
I loved the storyline, it was sweet, romantic, heartwarming, emotional and fun.
I loved Jake and Laken, they were strong, passionate, witty, likable characters that made me laugh, swoon and swoon some more while watching their relationship unfold.

And I loved the animals, especially Miss Goatikins/MG. I can't express how much I enjoyed watching Jake with MG. Here was this city guy getting down and dirty with a goat who had fallen in love with him and wanted only him. swoon...

I'm loving the Sex and Sweet Tea series, I can honestly say each book has been a joy to read and while they can be read as a standalone you do see the couples and characters from the previous books, which in my opinion only add to the reader's overall enjoyment.

If you're looking for quick, sweet and heartwarming read that will bring out the feels, I highly recommend Barking Up the Wrong Tree.

Veterinarian Laken is one of the 5 Mancinkus siblings in Whynot - she's bakery owner Larkin's twin! And she's not a relationship kinda gal! She loves hot guys, but just for a very short while.
And Jake. He's been retired from pro football for years and is now a very successful businessman, and now he's also the proud owner of a farm. With goats and goat-problems he has no clue about.

description

Enter Laken.
It's insta attraction between those two, but Laken is not in the market for serious. But Jake kinda is....but he's also living in Chicago and Laken will never leave her family for a guy again.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO LAKEN & JAKE?
WILL THERE BE A HEA???

Another super-adorable romance in this great series!!!

Such a sweet and cute and hilarious love story!

Everything is sweet in that town! (Especially Laken's twin sister Larkin's bakery! Can't wait to read her book!!! )

I loved this story. I loved our hottie Jake and his goats. Especially his little baby goat buddy! Ugh sooooo adorable!

description

We have this amazing insta-relationship between Laken and Jake - only Laken is scared of more. But Jake has a fun time convincing her that he's her forever-ever-after guy!

The best part of the book were the chapters where Laken's dog Herman gets his own POV. ADORABLE!!!!!

Grandpa gets his own POV too a few times - he's in a bit of medical trouble this time :/
The whole family is awesome. And there are still 2 siblings left with interesting stories to tell!!!
We already meet the girl the next Mancincus brother will be falling for in the next book!

I just loved this story. It was funny, adorable, sweet. Perfect!

Tiny little problems ... even though I knew going in that it was a sweet little romance ... I missed the sexiness. It's done like that on purpose of course, but I personally don't like that fading-to-black thing!

The other problem I always have with Sawyer's writing - with every one of her books.... It's Sawyer's and my thing It's only me who has those problems with her writing. So please don't be worried or just scroll down and don't read the following...
I have a HUGE AS problem! Sawyer always uses way too much of those You know the AS's I'm talking about? The AS that could and should be exchanged for a SINCE or BECAUSE or maybe even a COMMA It's a British and maybe a legal thing (if it's a thing at all!) and it doesn't have anything to do in an american book by an american author!
I really don't want to insult Sawyer. I love all her books, and maybe nobody ever told her she does that.... Sawyer....please stop doing it. But pfff who am I to tell her what to do, so just forget I said anything! It doesn't stop her books from being great! I have NO idea why this is bothering me so much, but as soon as I see those millions of ASes in Sawyer's books, I get sooo annoyed! Grrr.

BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE was such an adorable & sweet & funny love story! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Jake - this one is MINE!
Also - his baby goat is MINE too!

Laken is one of the twin girls in the Mancinkus family. She's the town vet and is known to be sassy, stubborn, independent, but can also be sweet. She has been burned before, so is more into casual flings and nothing too serious.

She never expected a well dressed, in distress man to come looking for her help. But Jake McDaniel is on over his head. He just bought a farm with goats, well goats that are now running away from the farm. And he is in desperate need of Laken's assistance and advice.

Jake lives in Chicago and is an established and successful business owner. He is only supposed to be in Whynot temporarily. But the goats seem to have other plans. As Jake begins to spend more time in Whynot, he and Laken can't control the pull. They're supposed to be having sex-without-expectations, and fun-without-commitment. They both want it that way...until maybe one of them doesn't. But they've got issues. He's a city boy. She's a small town, family girl. She is untrusting, fearful, and guarded. She is terrified of relationships, losing her independence, and getting hurt. He is determined and intelligent, but not always in regards to all of the nuances relationships. His long term plans include family and kids, but he is also dedicated to his business in Chicago. When they are in the same place and living in the present, they are good. But what happens when the reality of their diverging lives settles in?

This series just makes me smile. The stories are charming, sweet, funny, sexy, and entertaining. I am invested in this town and the quirky characters now...even the animals in this one have personalities. I really liked Jake. There is just something special about a big burly man feeding a baby goat. I liked his attitude, big heart, and that he knew what he wanted. Laken was feisty and fun, if not a teensy bit frustrating. I loved them together though, and they had great rapport and chemistry. We get both of their points of view and a few bonus points of view. We get to spend more time with the Mancinkus clan and a few new characters were introduced from Jake's life. I believe we will be seeing some of them again as there was a little tease. We've still got Colt and the other twin, Larkin Mancinkus left unattached and I am looking forward to their stories.

This series gets better and better and that's saying something since I really enjoyed the first two books. I knew we would be in for a treat after the way Jake and Laken met at the end of Stubborn as a Mule but we got so much more than I had expected. Laken, Jake, Herman, and Miss Goatikins had me laughing so much there were times that tears were in my eyes from laughing so hard, now don't get me wrong while there were many laughs to be had I also found myself tearing up at a certain point of the book, I will not give any spoilers but be prepared to have your laughter come to a screeching halt before it picks up again.

The Sex and Sweet Tea series from author Juliette Poe has become a fast favorite of mine and Barking Up The Wrong Tree is my favorite in the series to date. Sweet, sassy, and sexy all rolled together made this a fun and entertaining romance.

Moving back to Whynot, North Carolina wasn’t in Laken Mancinkus plans after college, but following a devastating breakup that almost broke her she realizes that she needed the comfort of the familiar. The longer she’s been back, the more she has come to realize that this town and her family are what she wants and needs in her life. Fiercely independent and with a snarky wit, Laken keeps things casual with men as that prevents any heartache. When Jake McDaniel bursts into her Pap’s bar looking for the town veterinarian, Laken takes offense he doesn’t assume she or her twin could be the vet but she can’t deny the man is very easy on the eyes.

Buying a farm in North Carolina close to where his mother retired Jake McDaniel doesn’t expect immediate problems when he arrives to check things out, but finding his foreman has left without notice and his goats are out and in danger he does the only thing he knows to do and looks for help. He just never expects in to come in a beautiful package with a razor sharp tongue.

This book surprised me on a couple of levels, despite not having any idea about farming or livestock I was impressed that Jake worked hard to figure things out and wasn’t afraid to get dirty or learn how to do things to be successful and even though Laken had been hurt before and was a tad bit skittish about relationships she worked hard to not let her past affect what was growing between her and Jake. She worked through her insecurities and the fact that she communicated her past issues with Jake helped him to reassure her along the way. I LOVED they had a grown up relationship and while they had moments, they worked through them together.

While the relationship between Laken and Jake was front and center, this book would not have been the same without the secondary characters including Jake and MG who added a lot of humor and fun to this already adorable story.

Author Juliette Poe does small town romance proud and Barking Up The Wrong Tree is a fantastic addition to this series.

Sawyer Bennett writing as Juliette Poe has become one of my absolute FAVORITE THINGS! The Sex and Sweet Tea Series just keeps getting better and better, and along with their magnificent covers, this town and the characters that reside in it are VERY MUCH NEEDED in my life right now. I don’t know if I’ve ever been charmed so quickly or so utterly addicted to a series and the world in which it lives. Whynot, North Carolina might be a fictional world, but it’s a world I would very much like to be embedded in.

BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE is book #3 in the series and it can be read as a standalone, BUT I urge you to start from the beginning and get to know this town and the charming, yet frustrating characters from the start. This AMAZING installment of the series is EASILY my favorite one to date. It features Laken Mancinkus, the town’s only vet and the absolutely gorgeous Jake McDaniel, who finds himself way in over his head from day one. Together, these two are literary magic! The heated chemistry is there. The hilarious banter is there. The stubbornness is DEFINITELY there.

I LOVE LOVE LOVED Laken and Jake! But I’ll tell you the truth and say that there were some scene-stealers in the mix. Again, we hear the voice of Pap, everyone’s favorite grandpa. And we get a surprising voice as well, which I’m not going to give it away because I want you to be as delighted as I was when I came upon it. So dive into the world of Whynot, NC - where everyone knows everything (or they think they do) and everyone helps each other out (or they try to), even if they are new to town. It’s a welcoming place with tons of shenanigans to go-round. I fell in love at first sight, and I believe YOU will too!

So mozie on in and get yourself a seat at the bar of Chesty’s, right next to Pap, and tell him your problems and he will help you figure it out from afar, and I promise you that you will get your happily ever after.

Back to Whynot we go, to explore the goings on this time between veterinarian and twin, Laken Mancinkus, and bold outsider, Jake McDaniel.

Laken likes a casual hook up. Always has, and considers that will continue when Jake “muscles McDaniel bowls into Chesty’s bar.

Finding himself bereft of the goats he thought resided on his newly acquired farm, Jake runs to the nearest help station to garner assistance. The animal lover in Laken sees her running to his rescue, but watch the developments as she adopts an advisory role to this ex-football playing businessman.

All members of the family pop up, given their proximity to the farm, and its developments. Whilst Jake attempts to settle his new acquisition, something makes it a little harder to do remotely.

I’m really liking Sawyer Bennett’s alter ego storyteller. The setting, the characters and just general framework are designed to smile. You can’t help falling in love with them.

Looking forward to the next instalment, who I hope to be Laken’s twin, Larkin.

This is yet another sexy sweet tale from Juliette Poe, aka Sawyer Bennett.

Lakin Mancincus knows the ma she is helping to round up his goats is a city slicker so far outside his comfort zone. But she also knows he’s good looking, and sexy underneath his expensive (ruined) suits and fancy car. He’s not going to be in town long, so what’s the harm in a little fun while he’s here.

Jake McDaniels knows nothing about running a farm, but he doesn’t plan to run the farm himself. Having bought Ferrington Farms as a tax write off, he never expected to have to rush there so quickly after having purchased it and hired a new foreman. Good thing in his panic he found the town vet, and found that not only is she a great vet, but she’s hot as well.

These two felt an attraction from the beginning. Lakin hasn’t had a serious relationship since she returned to Whynot 7 years ago, preferring to keep things casual. But Jake’s temporary residence in Whynot is enough buffer that she considers working on things a little longer term with the erstwhile farmer -- until feelings start to grow.

I loved Jake as he found his farm legs, particularly as Miss Goatikins played a role in those experiences. In fact, the addition of the animals, both MG and Lakin’s dog, Herman, added another grin inducing element to the story. Herman even has a few chapters to narrate in his goofy dog voice.

The entire Mancincus family is back, and there is some drama in the background that plays into Lakin’s stress as she and Jake dance around whether or not they are dating, whether or not they are serious. I love this family -- they are just so much fun to read!

5 MG Crowns

With every Sex and Sweet Tea book, I fall more in love with the small town of Whynot, NC and the Macinkus family.

Juliette Poe has created a small town that romance readers love. Filled with quirky townspeople, close-knit families, and small town charm, it is the perfect escape from the real world.

Barking Up the Wrong Tree focuses particularly on Laken and Jake (and one lovable goat). This low angst and low steam relationship is incredibly endearing as the characters are terrific. Both honest and open, looking for a real relationship with roots, readers won't be able to resist falling for these two.
Add in the addition of the farm animals and one crazy dog, readers will be completely enamored with this romance.

In addition to the romance, there is the continued influence of the patriarch, and his story seems to be covering all the books. Quirky, fun, and obstinate, he is the man that doles and the wisdom and readers will enjoy is character as much as the next.

If you are looking for a sweet and light read, Barking Up the Wrong Tree is the perfect one-click read with its low angst and high southern charm.

Sawyer Bennett has her alter ego Juliette Poe and she is here to create fun, light small town romance books! “Barking Up the Wrong Tree is the third book in this series and it can be read as a standalone. I have not read the previous books but having loved these covers, I wanted to try this one and this story is so entertaining.
Laken is the only veterinarian in her small town. She loves her family, her job and she has no need of men that can hurt her. Animals are a better companion for her so she can never abandon one that needs help. Even if that means she has to keep close with a sexy Yankee.
Jake is a businessman and when he decides a farm will have some benefits for his tax break, he buys one. Easy peasy, right?! Not once he could have imagined he would adopt a baby goat and he would also need a “nanny to school him.
As these two spend some time together, their attraction is burning so they agree for a fling. Can a city boy and a farm girl find their happily ever after?
This is such a sweet story with amazing secondary characters. Jake is decisive and when he wants something, he does his best to get it and he certainly chases Laken. He is so cute when he gets mushy with the baby goat and it is such a nice addition to the story. Laken on the other hand is sassy, smart and independent.
Their sexy scenes are behind closed doors but you can certainly feel their sparkles that fly.
If you want an adorable story with great characters, a supportive small community and loving animals, then this book is for you!

There is something so refreshing about this series, and I don't mean the covers. Although I just adore them, a lovely change to all the others around. This book and series have a delightful home town feel about them, very family orientated and they just make me feel so happy when reading them. Juliette Poe did an amazing job once again with Barking Up the Wrong Tree - Laken's story.

Laken is a little sassy, and a lot of a head strong kinda gal. She knows what she wants, and definitely what she needs. She has a lot of compassion, mainly towards the animal variety, but when she loves, she loves hard, and I respect that immensely. Jake is completely what Laken needs. He is loyal and smart and knows when he is on a good thing. He too has a soft heart and it was so endearing when he was looking after MG. I wish I was her, sitting on his lap!

These books are all standalones, they are about five siblings and their partners, but I am loving each and every book that comes out. They are an easy book to fall into and you come away feeling revitalised and upbeat. This one is mainly told in dual POV but a chapter or so are thrown in from Pap and Herman, quite funny. I know that Colt is up next in the series, and I can't wait. Highly recommend each and every book.

Squeeze! Barking Up the Wrong Tree is yet another sweet, lighthearted, cute romance from Juliette Poe. I am really falling in love with this series. Maybe it is the small town feels the close-knit people, the beautiful scenery, the animals and the farm life and all Whynot has to offer.

This one is about one of the twins Laken who is a town veterinarian. Laken hasn’t always been a small-town girl. She had her eyes on big city living once - the big practice, the clothes, the busy lifestyle. But things did not work out as she had hoped. Laken moves back home for a fresh start. She opens a small clinic and is content with being surrounded by families, but her dating life is nonexistent. Laken has no problem with having a little fun rolling in the hay but she is no longer interested in commitment or a relationship.

Jake is a city boy, ex-football player who bought a farm nearby for tax break purposes. Jake knows nothing about farming or taking care of the animals. So, when his goats run rampant though the city, one being pregnant, Jake panics. He needed major help and lucky for him Laken never turns her back on animals, even after Jake had insulted her intelligence the first time they met. I adore Laken and her feisty, honest personality. She does not sugar coat anything what you see is what you get. The only thing is I am not sure why I cannot picture what she looks like . Jake, sigh I can imagine: rugged, buff, bearded -- a handsome guy with a big teddy bear heart. Jake is in so much trouble at the farm but God love him he tries hard. Jake is sweet, kind, and quite swoony, not to mention a sex God in bed . It did not take long for Laken and Jake to get handsy with each other. After all, they are both attractive, single and willing to have a fun time with no strings attached. The only problem is Jake wants more and Laken does not. Laken is set in Whynot and Jake’s life is in Chicago. A long distance relationship would never work, would it?

This book is gorgeous the cover, the writing, the story told in several points of view including Herman. Geez, so freaking adorable I was secretly hoping for Ms. Goatskins point of view as well
This was such a sweet, romantic, fun and heartwarming read. I love the small-town premise adorable and refreshing. LOVED IT.

***4 ‘MG & Herman Stars***

This may be my favorite of the series (so far anyways since there are two more Mancinkus siblings to go) I loved Laken and Jake and their journey was all kinds of cute, funny, sweet sexyness and filled with heart.

Jake and Laken were a lot of fun to get to know. Laken is all kinds of focused and yet gentle. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind and take charge when the situation calls for it. She’s a little snarky, a little sassy but filled with a lot of heart. Jake is the kind of man who sees what he wants and goes for it, but doesn’t intentionally step on others toes to get it. He’s a good man who isn’t afraid to admit when he is in the wrong and wants to ensure that those he calls his own are happy and well take cared of.

Though Jake and Laken’s relationship started off extremely rocky, but things even out and I really enjoyed watching as they got to know each other and find that they have more of a connection than they thought. Their interactions were fun and flirty and though this is very much on the sweet side, the sexual chemistry was definitely strong between them. As for the big bump in their road, it’s all laid out from the start, but I really liked how it all played out in the end for both Jake and Laken.

This chapter in the series was a fun quick read, especially with the introduction of MG and her antics and Herman’s perspective being added to the mix. As always, I loved hanging out with Pap, as well as the rest of the Mancinkus clan. If you’re looking for a quick, sweet read with a lot of heart then this is the read for you!

Barking Up The Wrong Tree by Juliette Poe is the 3 novel in the Sex and Sweet Tea series. This novel can also be read as a standalone! This is the first novel in the Sex and Sweet Tea series that I have read and let me tell you, I will definitely be going back and reading the first two books!

Barking Up the Wrong Tree is the perfect feel good novel!

Laken and Jake's chemistry was spot on. I loved the hell out of both of these characters. Laken is the small towns only veterinarian and takes her job and her respect for animals very serious. Maybe that is why when 'city boy' Jake McDaniel steps into the picture Laken suddenly has a chip on her shoulder. Learning that Jake bought a farm as a tax write off does nothing to remove the chip. But Laken is about to learn there is more to this city boy then what meets the eye.

This is the perfect Country girl vs. City boy novel.

I loved the endless banter and the cute humorous scenes involving a baby goat that is obsessed with Jake.

If you're looking for a light and fun small town read, definitely pick up Barking Up The Wrong Tree. I highly recommend.

This was a cute, if plain, read. It's city boy meets country girl, with a little bit of drama thrown in. Laken is a country vet who helps Jake take care of his newly purchased goats. The goats were pretty adorable and I like that Jake became the dad to one of the babies. It also threw in a bit of the grandpa and dog's points of view. Yep, a dog lol. I didn't really care for those parts and I think it was just trying to make the story fluffier.

Also, who names their twin daughters Laken and Larken, really? Laken was a bit stubborn at times and Jake needed to make his feelings clear, but they clicked easily and it was clear we were heading for a happy ending. This is an easy listen and not too long, but I don't know that I'll read the other books in the series.

I know Sawyer Bennett mostly for her sexy stories, the Wicked books. As Juliette Poe however, she writes different stories. Still with sexy times and lots of chemistry, but far less naughty and no sex club in sight. Barking Up The Wrong Tree tells the story of Laken and Jake, small-town-girl and city-boy. I love their story, and I want my own MG (pretty sure hubby says no).
“You’re a city boy. I’m a country girl. You live in Chicago, and I live in a town you’ll forget by tomorrow.

After her last relation ended in disaster, Laken is living and working contently in Whynot as the small town’s only veterinarian. With her work and more importantly her family close by, Laken has all she needs. Recently divorced Jake is a hardworking man with his own company, and a somewhat neglected farm in Whynot is his latest acquisition. When they meet, Laken and Jake are instantly attracted to each other, but both are a wee bit stubborn and set in their ways. Luckily, with some friendly meddling they find out they can’t live without each other.
“I pull away from her. She purrs in appreciation when I rub my nose against hers. As I look down at her, she opens her eyes slowly with a smile on her face. “You are such a sweet kisser, Laken says almost dreamily. “Not like sweet as candy, but sweet as in ‘the bomb.

Barking Up The Wrong Tree is the third book in the ‘Sex and Sweet Tea Series and tells the story of one of the Mancinkus siblings. Most of the story is told from Laken and Jake’s POV, but also Laken’s dog Herman and her grandfather get their say. It’s a sweet, friendly, funny story about two opposite people falling for each other. But in the end, they might be not that different after all.

I love Barking Up The Wrong Tree. I expected a fun, sweet story and the book totally delivered. Although there are some serious parts, most of the time I had a big smile on my face. Laken and Jake are great together, and not just in the bedroom. It was fun to see city-boy Jake getting used to farmer-life, and his relationship with Miss Goatikins the baby goat is the cutest. (Note to self: do NOT mention baby goats to the kids, and especially don’t show them pics. It can only end in a hilarious disaster )
“I just know. This is where my life is supposed to be. Pulling Laken in close, I ask her, “So you admit you love me? “It’s not a hardship to do so, she returns impishly. “You’re moderately handsome and successful and Herman seems to like you.

I love this sweet story, I give Barking Up The Wrong Tree 4 stars.

4.5 baby goat loving stars.

Nothing better than a guy and his goat. Yes you heard it right goat. That was the cutest thing ever imprinting on the big man. How does one start something with a small town vet why a goat emergency of course. Yes I keep mentioning the little kid because it's focal point of everything. There's a dog too and I can't deny I love animals in stories.

City boy and small town girl, unlikely pair and they didn't start out on the right foot but there was some definite chemistry.
Jake maybe clueless about running a farm and is probably better at his business but with the help of a pretty vet he manages. He is a hard worker by nature which is great even better a genuine guy too. His reasons for the farm kills two birds and really he is trying to make it work. Laken knows her stuff and capable, helping when she can. Her vulnerable side is very relatable and she loves animals. Helps they get on fabulously too.

Laken and Jake weren't meant too be more than casual with the long distance arrangement they have. Still that physical connection that's slowly turning into more is getting evident. Laken may have gotten burned and now relationship shy and in denial of her feelings. Can she resist falling Jake the hunk and his persistence though? Maybe that effort and coaxing can pay off and win over the tough vet. Not right away of course Laken does do things her own way and of course the distance to overcome. They really seemed like a good fit despite all that the banter is great and easygoing relationship.

A light hearted, sweet visit back to Whynot is always a fun time. A bit fast though and left at a semi closure which probably will continue on.The usual cast of characters make it a delightful kind of read. Humor filled and low angst as always. We get set up for the future books as well. I'm enjoying this Southern set series from Juliette Poe she has a sweet and sexy writing style that is disarmingly good.

Barking up the Wrong Tree is third book in the Sex and Sweet Tea series. Each book can be read as standalone but they are all connected by five siblings. The Mancinkus'. Laken is one of the twins and it's her turn to found out what this whole love thing is all about. She wasn't looking for it though. She didn't even want it.

One city boy. One country girl. One heated connection. The problem? Distance. Oh. And the fact that one doesn't want more than a casual fling. That could be a problem especially when those pesky feelings and cute furry animals get in the way.

Jake was only suppose to be here for a few days. See the farm he bought in the small town of Whynot. Meet the foreman. Stay the night and head back to Chicago. That was the plan. It wasn't chasing after goats, repairing fences, and sleeping with the beautiful and feisty veterinarian. And it especially wasn't the plan to come back. But, one very cute kid that wants his mommy Jake changed everything. And seeing Laken over and over again for his Farming 101 tips was not a hardship. He liked her. A lot. And not just because she could rock his world. Too bad they live in two different worlds.

I loved this couple! Jake is a big teddy bear especially with MG. He is also damn hot, funny, and makes Laken feel again. Laken is beautiful inside and out, independent, sweet, and feisty. Together they are pretty much amazingly fun and sexy. But, is it enough in combine two worlds into one?

Overall...it's a wonderful and refreshing addition to this series! It just keeps getting and better. I can't wait to see what Juliette has next for this family and town.

P.S. I ❤️ Herman and MG.

Quotes:

“You’re a big dude. Got muscles and tattoos. Granted, you drive a prissy car, but still I didn’t take you to be so sensitive.
“Yeah, sensitive is the last thing I am. Just not sticking my finger up a dog’s butt.

Big burly men and little furry animals so sexy.

“We’re not dating.
“Of course we’re not, he says solicitously, but his eyes are crinkled with laughter.

Those Mansinkus kids make me laugh. And the laughs get better with each book in the series.
This book is about Laken, she's the Vet in Whynot. Her practice is based mostly on farm animals. But she does tend to some of the dogs and cats in town.
So she's pissed when Jake McDaniels walks into Chestys looking for a Veterinarian and seems to be looking for a man. She may be pissed, but she doesn't miss how hot he is. He's exactly the type that turns her on. She even goes as far as to hope he doesn't have tattoo's because as hot as he is she's trying to fight off her attraction to him
As far as this series goes THIS is my favorite book. The push and pull you feel from Jake and Laken is amazing. Even though Jake is a hunk and appears to be a toughie he does have a soft side. I love seeing that in a character, the other thing is he truly met his match in Laken. She maybe be beautiful, but dont make her mad. She will cut you fast.

5 Star Review of Barking Up The Wrong Tree by Juliette Poe (Sex & Sweet Tea #3)

This was a fun, quick read full of romance, laughter and love of family. This is Laken Mancinkus and Jake McDaniel's story and I loved it from start to finish.

I have to say that this one of the funniest series I have read this year, Ms. Poe certainly has a handle on the romantic comedy genre. She describes Whynot in such great detail that I would love to visit. I love the idea of a small town where everyone knows you; although I am sure that could also be rather trying at times. I spent so much of my time laughing whilst reading this book that I was in danger of laying an egg, well, so said my husband.

Laken is the only vet in town, not a particularly busy practice but one she loves. She is annoyed when she finds out that a city slicker has purchased a nearby goat farm for a tax break and has no idea what he is doing. That is until she meets the devastatingly attractive Jake and is attracted to him.

Laken is not afraid to have a one or two night stand,;what scares her is commitment and dating thanks to a romance gone bad. Jake is attracted to the feisty vet and although he isn’t looking for romance, he is interested in getting to know Laken better.

These two had me in stitches, add in a baby goat (Miss Goatikins) that refuses to feed from anyone but Jake you start to get the picture.

Having said that reality does rear it’s head when Pap get’s seriously ill. That’s when you see the power of love that the Mancinkus family share, not to mention the support offered by the residents of Whynot, North Carolina.

Will Jake and Laken decide to give their relationship a chance, or will distance make it impossible?

I look forward to the next hilarious installment in the Sex & Sweet Tea series.

Any book with kids or animals---done right---just can't be a bad story in my world. You know it's going to be even better when we get chapters in the animals POV! Juliette Poe brings us a light romantic romp back in the town of Whynot, NC. Laken is the town veterinarian and ends up rescuing and escaped herd of goats for the city boy who just bought a local farm. What follows is flirting and the potential for some thing with no strings attached. But then baby goats happen and Jake and Laken spend more time together. (see--babies AND animals---good book!)

As always, this author brings us a well rounded cast of secondary characters. The small town feel and the gossip circles keep things entertaining. It was great to catch up on Laken's family again. Just a couple more siblings left to meet their HEA. Looking forward to reading more about the residents of Whynot.

Take a trip to NC and meet the wonderful folks of Whynot. Lovely romantic read!

Barking Up the Wrong Tree is my favourite of this series so far (2 more to go). Laken Mancinkus meets her match when Jake McDaniel turns up in Whynot after purchasing a local farm........which he has no idea how to run.

This book was so much fun to listen to. I'm so glad I listened to the audio version, as some of the narration really added humour to parts of the story. Multi POV, my favourite POV would definitely have to be Herman. Stephen Dexter narrating Herman was hilarious - I couldn't help but LOL when Herman mentions his full name being "Dammit Herman". And to up the cuteness factor there was Miss Goatikins, the cute little baby goat that decides Jake is her mama and doesn't want anyone else.

Jake and Laken had amazing chemistry, and Jake is happy to just go with the flow with Laken who has major commitment issues. Lucky he is a patient guy willing to wait for what he wants.

The Sex and Sweet Tea series is all kinds of funny and entertaining. Laken, the town veterinarian meets her match with city-boy Jake McDaniel. Goats bring them together (yes, you read right - I said goats), and that makes for one entertaining story. Ever heard of goat yoga? Neither have I until I read this. Ever heard of a baby goat bonding with a human and needed to be nursed by said human? You'll find that in this book. Laken and Jake have a number of obstacles to overcome. What started out as noncommittal and easy turns into anything but that. It was lovely to "check-in" with the other characters in WhyNot and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
