A light-bearer with limited vision. A prisoner with wings. Can two cursed souls defeat the forces of darkness?

Noire hates the magic that cursed his family and trapped him in the form of a raven. But to break the spell, he's willing to do anything, even if it means striking a bargain with the cruel sorceress Venefica. After agreeing to destroy the one person who threatens Venefica's dark power, he seeks out the key ingredient for a curse of life-altering pain

Lyssanne has never let diminished vision interfere with her teaching or storytelling. But when mind-numbing pain robs her of the strength to continue, some townsfolk question her usefulness to the village. Unsure where to turn, Lyssanne witnesses a terrifying sight: a shadowy mist, which only she can see, sending a beloved student into a frightful rage. When she tries to warn her people of a sinister force on the prowl, the villagers cast her out into the wilds

As Lyssanne struggles to survive the elements, Noire plans his deadly attack. Stalking her every move, the raven has second thoughts about ending her life, even though failure would doom his people. But every moment he delays brings Lyssanne one step closer to wielding her gift of light. Can she discover her destiny before the entire realm falls to dark magic?

Keeper of Shadows by Bridget Powers is a Fantasy genre novel with Christian themes. The world Powers builds is enjoyable with characters that I grew to care about. The environment is a bit generic without much change as the heroine's adventures take her to different lands. As I read, I didn't much care because the adventures, hardships and characters kept me turning the pages. Too much description would have bogged down the storyline. I enjoyed how Powers held back explanation of curses and gifts so as to allow the reader to be held in suspense much as the characters themselves had limited understanding of the exact nature of their own experience.

The plot had unique elements although, it had some usual entities that fantasies have. As I alluded to above, the storyline kept moving along continually with bouts of sickness, inventive villains and romance. This was a very enjoyable ride. There was a fair amount of sappiness toward the end, and another reader might find it a bit saccharin, but I was so totally into it, I loved it.

Power's strenghth is character development as she illustrates how the protagonist grew through her many hardships and adventures. She needed to be rescued a few times but this didn't make her a weak female cliché. Some of her rescuers were female and the males had weaknesses themselves. The villain characters were unique, but flat. On the other hand, the heroic characters were much more developed and easy to sympathize with. I appreciated the effort made to give the antagonist some rationale for why she was on the course she was on. All in all, I met some characters that I want to meet again.

The Christian themes presented actually encouraged me personally. Without giving spoilers, much of the conflict had to do with our own thoughts and how they can defeat us or if we speak "the King's words " darkness is dispelled. Other themes included forgiveness and loving those that hurt you. I enjoyed the result of the heroine living her life "worthy of the Gospel." I don't want to say more than that.

I enjoyed Keeper of Shadows immensely and have already downloaded the prequel, Tria. I won't hesitate to buy 3 more to send to my adult children. I look forward to reading more from Bridget Powers!

Keeper of Shadows, by Bridgett Powers, is a character driven epic fantasy. Featuring fairies, a unicorn, a host of evil monsters and one of the strongest heroines I've read.

Lyssanne is considered weak and fragile, but she consistently proves the peasants in her small village wrong. Until a dark curse causes her to take to her bed for days at a time.

On top of this the king has a quest for her to complete.

I loved this book because the people were so realistic. Nothing felt forced, and the romance was so subtle that it truly felt as if it bloomed organically from the characters.

Keeper of Shadows is a fantastic journey, that shows anyone can overcome their circumstances and breakthrough the darkness.

This story was fun to read. When I began, I had no expectations. As the story began, I was cautiously optimistic. Before long, I fell deep into the story, getting caught-up in it.

Lyssanne sets off on an adventure after being forced from her home by a Shadow Mist. At first, she is simply seeking refuge. Before long, she finds herself on a journey with two others, a unicorn, and two birds (kind of).

As trouble seems to keep finding her, she continues moving, finding more who are willing to help her. A prophecy soon reveals that she maybe the key to defeating this dark evil that is plaguing the land. Eventually, she must face her fear and the sorceress.

Let's start with the cons first this time.

There were times when I felt the dialogue was inconsistent. The speech of the characters comes off as Old English, mixed with a more modern dialogue. For me, the difference is so compelling that it makes small portions of conversation seem unrealistic/unnatural. To be consistent and not take the reader out of rhythm, I feel like there should have either been more of the older style of speech or none at all. Others may disagree.

The villain wasn't very scary. I know this isn't a horror story. But, the main antagonist came across more as a bratty child than a true villain. The main confrontation did a fair bit to correct this. Still, I feel a missed opportunity remained to really make us fear for Lyssanne and her safety.

Alright, now for the pros.

Lyssanne is a loveable character whose gentle spirit and trust of others makes her both enduring and vulnerable. She's a solid character with realistic flaws and natural desires. I like her. I'd be interested in knowing what the inspiration is behind this character.

Twists, this book doesn't have many twists. But, there is one I didn't see coming that was very interesting and did a lot to drive the story. Nice job! The rest of the twists flowed quick organically, not really being "A-ha" moments as much as being "Oh, that makes sense" moments.

The theme is simple and very applicable to the world we live in, let your light shine. It's carried all throughout the story. Bridgett does a good job, in a non-preachy way, of showing how easy it is to be reluctant about showing in the darkness. After all, we're being directed more and more not to draw attention to ourselves. But, Lyss eventually learns that shining your light takes practice and is best served in the midst of darkness.

This book was well worth the read. I certainly recommend it!

I really enjoyed reading Keeper of Shadows. The plot sucked me in, and I especially loved Noire and Jarad. The world building was great, with lots of attention to detail, and the writing style was engaging from the start. There was a lot of explanation that I felt slowed the pace at times, and the ending seemed to drag a bit past the climax. That said, I couldn’t put it down. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. I'd recommend Keeper of Shadows to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy with just a touch of romance.
Note: I was given a free copy of this book as part of a review group, but this did not influence my views in any way.

This epic fantasy is an entirely enjoyable read. It's well written with a far-reaching and engaging plot, but the characters are my favorite part.

Lyssanne, though appearing weak to some, has innate wisdom, strength, and persistence that just made me want to share her journey, even though it was a difficult one. The villain is also a believable character. Not that I'd make friends with her, but she is a force to be reckoned with. And then there is Brennus, with all of his conflicting motives and his own brand of strength. Not perfect by any standard, but always interesting. There is a host of other characters, human or otherwise. Each has a unique persona adding depth and spice to the story world.

Even though this is the first in a series, the ending was completely satisfying on its own. I'm looking forward to traveling with Lyssanne and Brennus again.

What do you do when friends become the enemy and your enemies become your only hope? You keep turning pages till the wee hours of the morning to find out. Keeper of Shadows is a wonderful, well written novel, the first in the Light Wielder Chronicles, and I can hardly wait to delve deeper into the Seven Lands.

Filled with rich world-building, unique creatures {Seriously, some gave me chills, while others entertained and intrigued me}, and a cast of complex characters. The author made the characters and their emotions so relatable, I found myself cheering, or wanting to cry, or biting my nails right along with them. They draw a reader into their lives so deeply they seem real.

I agree with other reviewers that nothing in this book felt forced. The romantic subplot is subtle and grows naturally between the characters, the "magic" is unique, and this book is filled with exciting action and adventure.

This is the type of epic fantasy that could only come from the pen of Bridgett Powers! A fantasy novel that goes deeper than just Light vs. Dark—Keeper of Shadows explores personal battles of the heart and a sense of self worth and purpose in relation to the circumstances raging around us. Delightful characters color the pages (is it weird to admit I have a major crush on Brennus?), and a fantasy world so vivid you’ll feel you’ve stepped into another time and place. I can’t wait for the sequel and the chance to delve back into the lives of these characters!

Epic fantasy adventure, pitting good against evil, cursed maiden, equally cursed knight. Throw in fairies, several monsters and a unicorn to get this lovely unique tale.

This adventure has my heart stirred.

Lyssanne and Brennus are my favorite kind of “I could be friends with them in real life flawed characters. I am already looking forward to more story. This is a tale of depth and substance, beautiful castles, interesting creatures, elegant lords and ladies, conniving forces of darkness, and a light that works in the heart of the matter.

I was personally challenged and inspired by how the author explored issues like purpose, talents, and destiny. The story was engaging and kept me wanting more.

Keeper of Shadows is one of my favorite reads, and I am eagerly anticipating the next in the series. With strong faith, friendship, and good versus evil elements, this almost 500 page book is difficult to put down. Intermingling pain, hope, and humor, the characters are relatable. The world-building is well done and not overwhelming. The reader gets glimpses of the Seven Lands that makes them want to dive into the book and travel to each. In short, Keeper of Shadows is a must-read.

From the first sentence I felt as if I had been transported to an ancient storyland with a gentle hand that led me, unresisting, down a path of curses, betrayal, adventure, and revealed truths. Bridgett Powers is a gifted writer! I look forward to reading more of her series with her gently leading me every step of the way as light continues to battle dark forces.

Wonderful!

Truly enjoyed this book. First read the prequel and enjoyed the back story. The characters intrigue and inspire. The story is a wonderful reminder of our King's unconditional love and forgiveness. Looking forward to the remainder of the series.

Very well written. A classic tale of Light vs Dark forces. An unlikely heroine and a slew of obstacles in her path. A struggle of good to overcome evil. Bridgett Powers has done a great job of intertwining adventure, deceit, and love in an enchanting tale.

An epic tale of the eternal battle between good and evil. Lyssanne had been cursed before she was born
by an evil sorceress named Venefica. Even though the curse stunted her growth and diminished her eye sight, Lyssanne found joy in taking care of the children. However, Venefica uses a spy to get something from her and curses her with blinding headaches which keep her from doing anything. The
village casts her out as a result but she isn’t alone as an orphan boy Jared follows her and insists she take him with her. The spy follows them and they meet up with a unicorn and later a knight and have some exciting journeys. She discovers more about herself and why she was cursed by the witch. They return to the village she was cast out of and with help from humans, faeries, and heavenly light confront Venefica and witness her demise.

This is a tale which will tear at your heartstrings because of the struggles Lyssanne has to endure not knowing why until the very end of the book when she faces the sorceress that cursed her before birth and afterwards.

I suggest you keep a box of tissues at hand because unless you aren’t one that shows emotion, you’re going to need it!

I enjoyed this book even though at times it looked like
evil would prevail before it was ultimately banished! Therefore I heartily recommend it for all but the very youngest readers because the darkness in it is very dark! One thinks darkness will out but does it really?

I encourage you to also pick up Tria as well and read it first as it’s the lead into this story. It well worth your time to read it that I can guarantee !

If you’re looking for a story well written that will hold your interest this is the book for you! Get both of
these books and settle back and relax and let Bridgett weave her magic and keep you in that cocoon until the end

In Keeper of Shadows, Lyssanne is chosen by the invisible King of all Lands (God) to wield the power of light. And who should oppose her but a sorceress who mistakenly believes she alone controls the shadow mists? Although this is a classic fantasy setting (including setting, verbiage, and classic mythical creatures such as faeries and unicorns), the use of "magic" in this world is forbidden by the King--as in scripture. A delicate balance is struck between fulfilling reader expectations for the fantasy genre while simultaneously staying true to commands in the Bible regarding sorcery.

The prose was gorgeous, and free from common commercial ailments. The characters, especially Brennus, were well developed and grew slowly, and believably over the course of 500 pages.
