This is a solid conclusion to the first arc of the Ignition trilogy. We get traps, evil fiends, and choices with deadly consequences. The virtues of the Toa Inika and the vices of the Piraka are brought to plain view by the challenges placed along the 777 steps of the staircase which lead to the chamber of the Mask of Life. Sadly I think the weakest part of this book is how Vezon exposits everything. He seemed more menacing in his introduction in the last book. His need to explain makes the desperate scenes of battle less intense. Still a good entry and gets the reader ready to take a dive underwater.

The conclusion to the Voya-Nui arc. the Axonn/Brutaka confrontation is really great and Axonn's conversation with Botar afterward is so evocative. Vezon is such a fun character. Krahka comes back from the shadow realm(!) love that for her.

Meh. It was okay. It should've explored more of the Krahka and the Tahtorak though.

The Inika didn't accomplish anything and that's a bit frustrating. At least Greg is starting to find a good rhythm where it's not just all exposition and fighting.

“The pit yawns for you, and who am I to keep you and yours from it?

[Some of Farshtey’s lines are straight-up Awesome, it’s ridiculous.]

This book is the conclusion of BIONICLE’s 2006 storyline, which means it’s the final race for the Mask of Life! And by that, I mean, not really ‘final, because the ending has the Mask zoom off into the ocean for Plot Reasons. But with the title, and the battles that we get in this book, it certainly *feels* final.

I am a little look, the tests that you receive on the way to the Mask don’t always make complete sense? For instance, at one point the Toa Inika fight a bunch of villains who don’t make any sense to be there, only to accidentally kill them, only for them to transform into their friends, and so the heroes walk away feeling horrible until they notice that the illusions disappear. I *think* that the idea was that no matter what, they should be willing to go forward no matter what, but it reads like the book couldn’t decide how to handle this one.

There’s another test where the Piraka are told that they’ll die if they screw it up, and then they don’t die when they screw it up. There IS a sort of punishment, but it’s not really the kind of thing you’d expect from that sort of test. It’s like Greg needed them to skip ahead to the final fight, and didn’t have any other way for them to get that far except to fall into a tunnel that got them there.

The final fight is really cool, though. If you weren’t on BZP or in the fandom back in 2006, it’s hard to describe the anticipation for the final fight with Vezon, and how we were all really looking forward to it. I think it turned out well! I am a little iffy on how much Vezon really knows, though; he implies that he knows Makuta put the Piraka up to stealing the Mask of Life, which is impressive given the Piraka themselves don’t know, though the Toa Inika are just on the cusp of realizing who’s behind it when they decide that it’s impossible to tell (??).

It is also a little disappointing, in hindsight, that the Piraka here are implied that they’re going to come back in a big way, only to not be in another book. Their next appearance was written, but not published because the book was canceled, and I believe they appear in some web serials?

Man, though, this book takes me back; it makes me want to play “BIONICLE: Heroes or the Voya Nui Online Game. It’s got lots of fights, more about the Mask of Life, hints to the creation of the BIONICLE universe, and there's even a giant dragon. What more could you ask for?

To a degree, if you've read one Bionicle book, you've read them all, but that's okay with this series. Originality is not the point. Adventure and strength of character are. Lego has spun off three distinct book series, Bionicle Legends, Bionicle Adventures, and Bionicle Chronicles, from their popular Lego toy characters. If you have a 7-11 year old reader (most likely a boy) who lives for never-ending legends of superheroes doing battle against terrible evils, saving planets, mastering their elemental powers, and learning to work as a team, these books make a good suggestion. They're better than I would expect!

No CIP. Cover:The Toa Inika wage a desperate running battle in the heart of a volcano as the hunt for the Mask of Life reaches its shattering climax! The Toa must defeat the Piraka to reach the mask, but if they do, they will face a monster beyond all imagining born from an ancient curse.

One review: Resources Link: "Bionicle fans will enjoy the action and adventure of this fantasy book.... Most children in this age group love superheroes and want to emulate their strength and bravery while enjoying the excitement inherent in many of their adventures. This, in turn, helps children learn about conflict... cooperat[ion] and their powers of imagination."

Warning: Possible Spoiler

Inferno is the fifth book in the Bionicle Legends series. I gave it the rating I did because I found it interesting, exciting, and I love the Bionicle books, movies, and toys. In this book, it's a mad dash towards the mask of life. The toa Inika want to get the mask before the Piraka so that they can save Voya Nui. The Piraka, on the other hand want to get the mask before the toa so that they can enslave everyone in the world. Both sides must undergo a number of tests to claim the mask. They each will meet different guardians of the mask whole will test their strength, wits, will, and teamwork. After all of these tests, they will meet the ultimate guardians, Vezon and Fehnraak. The story even goes on to talk about more than just the Piraka and Inika. The book even talks about the original toa, the toa Nuva and the matoaran resistance. It even speaks of the conflict between Axonn, and Brutaaka. Before you read this book, you need to know the characters, locations, elemental territories, and a bunch of other stuff. If you're going to read this book, you need to know pretty much everything in the Bionicle universe.

The most interesting parts were Irnakk and Vezon. I tried to read it twice and got bored 2nd time around. The Pit sounded amazingly creepy at the end, but I got bored. The last of the Piraka, I definitely got a kick out of this one.

Another great addition that smoothly ties up some loose ends, and presents a fine adventure and strong, well-drawn characters.
