I bought this for the absolutely beautiful cover* (the back features a lovely image of a cherry tree, which is just as appealing as the front cover!) and because I liked the way the book felt in my hands. I didn't know what to expect from it, but I knew it was going to be a special book. Which of course, it was.

Mafalda is nine years old. She's wonderful and insightful and loves her cat, Ottimo Turcaret. 🐱 She also has Stargardt Disease, and is rapidly losing her sight. She measures the increasing loss by the distance that she is from the cherry tree at her school when she can see it.

This was a sad, funny, poignant book. Mafalda is such a wonderful character. I could have read this in one sitting, but I wanted to make it last, so I paced myself! Her friendships with Filippo and Estella are wonderful and rather magical. It's a simple story, but also isn't, I don't really know how to convey my point properly! Nonetheless, it was a gorgeous book that I will treasure, and most likely read again.

*The illustrations, both on the cover and inside the book are by Carolina Rabei, and I adored them. 💟

Yup. Bought it for the cover. (Nah, not this cover. I have got the one with the cherry and the black and the girl one 🖤) And actually ended up liking it. What are the odds?
I am happy!

The story is told from the perspective of a 9 year old girl who is suffering from a rare genetic illness, Stargardt Disease, due to which she is going to lose her sight altogether in the following 6 months.
The book follows our main character, Mafalda, for two years after the diagnosis.

The everyday struggles of coming in terms with the situation; the parents becoming overcautious; the discovery of real friends and the realisation of fake friends; moments of first love; facing the fears and the uncertainty of each day have been well portrayed.

The book talks about books and music and lists-to-do. What made me love this little book is the way it talks about changing priorities and not getting stuck in a frame of mind as was decided beforehand a situation actually happened.

The story tells how important it is for a child to have someone to trust and confide in someone. I loved how the book solely does not keep focussing on the disease and the fears based on it. I appreciate the innocence as well as the doubts of the young which are expressed genuinely with honesty in between the lines.

My most favourite character is Estella. Without her, this book would not have worked for me.

As much as I wanted to, I just couldn't get attached with the main child character. The rest of the characters are just so-so. But...yes, I love the presence of the cat, Ottimo Turcaret. Yes, that's the name of the cat. It has a story behind it.

I can feel the angst, the confusion, the fears and the acceptance of Mafalda. That I can say. It felt so real. Sometimes it felt like I was reading a fictionalized aubiography as the author herself suffers from this rare illness.

Ah, the book is so beautiful. I would like to get lost in the cherry tree much like Mafalda. I can totally understand.

I bought this book a couple days ago because of the gorgeous cover and the touching premise : Mafalda, a 9 years old little girl, is losing sight because of an illness (the author suffers from this illness herself).

It's a story about resilience, grief, family and friendship. I thought I'd cry, but I didn't feel connected enough to the characters. There was something missing in the story or in the way it was told, but I can't put my finger on what it was exactly... Maybe it was the way Mafalda dealt with her struggles that didn't seem realistic enough to me. It's still an interesting book that made me learn about this rare illness.

Chiar m-a bucurat. 😊

" All children are scared of the dark. I am too, because for me, the dark is a blindfold you put over your eyes to play a game, but you can't take off when the game is over"

I’ve had this problem before with own-voice stories, where I really want to love them and somehow feel bad when I don’t That was exactly the feeling The Distance Between Me and the Cherrytree left me with. If you know me, you’ll also know that I’m on a never-ending search for good books that feature disability or chronic illness, as I feel like that’s a subject that’s criminally underrepresented in literature, let alone childrens literature. Whenever I do find one, I always hope it’s a gem. Unfortunately, this was kind of ordinary to me.
Our 9-year old protagonist Mafalda suffers from the same condition the author herself suffers from: Stargardts Disease, a hereditary condition that causes gradual vision loss in childhood. It’s rare for someone to go completely blind from this disease, but unfortunately Mafalda is one of the unlucky few. We follow her over the course of months as her vision gradually decreases, and her world literally becomes smaller and more grey. Supported by her best friend Filippo and her caretaker Estella, she tries to complete the things she wants to do before she loses her sight completely, and cope with her loss before it’s complete.

What I loved most about The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree was how well it balances the terrifying and heartbreaking subject matter with the childlike wonder and lightness that a middlegrade novel needs in order to stay bearable for children. Mafalda’s own mindset and the characters of Estella, Filippo and even her cat work well for this.
I also loved the way it truly shows this disease from the perspective of a 9-year old. Mafalda often talks about her fear of the dark, because that’s realistically the only thing she can imagine blindness to be like. There’s no talk of vision-percentages, as that wouldn’t be the way a 9-year old thinks about her sight. Instead, Mafalda measures the progression by how close she has to get to the cherry tree in order to see the blossoms clearly.
What was missing for me was a certain level of depth. There is so much more to an impending disability, and the feelings of an almost 10-year-old about this are bound to be more complicated than portrayed here. Maybe the author underestimated a childrens ability to comprehend or be able to “handle this, but I feel missed opportunity not to try.
There were also some small things that bothered me: the way Mafalda sometimes feels way younger than she’s supposed to be (more like 6 to 7), yet also talks about love and babies like someone way more mature. Also the fact that her school teaches some very convenient things. When her doctor first tells Mafala about her illness, she says something like “yes, we learned about the macula at school. No you didn’t; half of my first-year med-students don’t know what the macula is

You can tell that the author put a lot of herself in the story, which is why I feel even worse for seemingly critiquing her life-story, which is not my intention obviously. But in the end my opinion as a reviewer is worth nothing if I’m not being honest. All in all: an important book for the subjectmatter it touches, but the way it was executed left somewhat to be desired for me.

I'd seen a lot of advertisement for this book so I think my expectations were higher than they should have been, as I'm quite disappointed. I really thought I'd love this heartfelt story but I found it quite plain. It focuses on Mafalda's struggle with coming to terms with her illness, soon she will be blind.
To me Mafalda seemed about 6 or 7 years old, she spoke and acted in a very innocent and naive way, very unlike the ten year old she was supposed to be. And so it three the perspective of the story a bit, ten year olds have a much deeper knowledge and understanding than was being portrayed in this book.
It is an emotional story, but Mafalda's character didn't come across as very realistic to me. A disappointing read.

This is about a little girl who is slowly going blind. It is written from her point of view and tells the story of the months following her diagnosis and how she feels about what is happening to her.

The book is well written and easy to read. I usually enjoy reading a child's point of view, and this was no different. She also writes in a journal, which is a good way to give a insight into what she is thinking and feeling.

The characters were unusual and this added much needed depth to the book. I think the author has tried to surround the main character with friends and family as unique as she seems to be. This diverse little bunch was the highlight of the book for me. They brought some much needed colour which would otherwise have been lacking.

Although the plot is an interesting one and the book is very emotional at times, it was missing some depth for me. It is at some points very sad, but it was quite short and I felt it only scratched the surface the story that could have been told. There could have been more character development, and it would have been more interesting to have points of view of her parents or other people to give a deeper meaning to what was happening.

This was an enjoyable book, but it was a fleeting enjoyment and didn't leave much of a mark.

On ve on iki yaş aralığında ana karakterlerin ağzından okuduğumuz kitaplar her zaman benim için unutulmaz olmuştur.

A simple but charmingly bittersweet story about a young girl coming to terms with the fact that she is losing her sight. It's great to see a novel for young readers that tackles the notion of disability and difference with such honesty and sensitivity; enhanced, no doubt, by the fact that the author has the same condition as her protagonist.

The narrative voice is believably youthful and naive, and the translation from Italian was clearly handled well. Though poignant, it didn’t delve as deep as it could have, and so didn't hit me in the gut quite as much as I hoped. Still, it’s a book with a lovely message about self-acceptance and the importance of friendship that I could easily recommend.

Kako izgledaju dani kada brojite korake do školske trešnje?

Ben sevdim 💓
