A Certain Kind of Justice

Rate this book
Lagos has a reputation for being a tough city. Marius, ex-intelligence officer and amateur philosopher, isn’t happy about travelling there with a man he barely knows, the head of an IB school in Lomé. But when he finds him bleeding to death on the side of a quiet suburban street in Lagos, he decides to find out more.
The Lagos police think it’s the work of ‘Area Boys, but Marius isn’t so sure. He knows the man was worried about a phone call; a call that made him question whether he could trust the men who run the school for Dave Gordon, friend and business partner, and George Barnes, registrar.
Back in Lomé, it doesn’t take Marius long to realize that charismatic, handsome Dave Gordon is not who he pretends to be, and definitely not someone who should be running a school. The problem is, how can Marius unmask a man so careful, so organized and so unscrupulous?
And where does justice lie?

I enjoyed this novel and the strong voice of the main character, Marius. It's interesting to be immersed in cultural life in Togo, an African country I'd never heard off.

AK Jenkins makes lively the jazz scene, the expat scene and the seeming acceptance of corruption and violence as inevitable.

When a man he knows is murdered after asking him for help, Marius pursues justice, helped by old friends and new who will do not accept greed, intimidation and murder as a way of life.
