Grabbed this book on an impulse, since I know the author from her book-marketing podcast, which I like. This is a pretty surface book. It reads like, and probably is, a collection of repurposed blog posts. I personally don't like reading books like that, but it might not bother everyone.
Definitely more a handful of suggestions and things to consider than an in-depth instructional book. Some of the Amazon stuff is already outdated. (I feel bad for people who try to write books about the details of kdp. They would have to revise every few months to stay on top of it.)
Not bad. Only took me about an hour to read. Might have been more satisfied with it as a freebie than I am as an actual book. Kind of feels like a promo for the author's book marketing business.
This book came at a perfect time for me. I've been thinking one of my older series needs a refresh. After reading this book, I'm thinking that maybe more than one series could benefit from some updates and changes. There were some great ideas and helpful tips in here.
I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my honest, unbiased review of its content.
I bought this book on the review of another author and because I am currently 12 months into the preparation work into a series relaunch.
Sadly I was very disappointed. It feels as if the author glosses over everything possible, barely ever going into detail and proving overall, unhelpful to an author that actually wants to or has been considering relaunching a book or an entire series. The one time she did go into detail (regarding Amazon's royalty percentages), she actually got it wrong.
At no point does it talk about the impact a series relaunch can have on your readers - the very people you should be putting at the front of your reasoning why you want to relaunch before any of your own reasons. Neither does it go into detail about how to decide truly if this is the right step for you and how to prepare, reflect upon (before making changes) or even asking your dedicated readers for their thoughts.
Thankfully, my own master document on my own series relaunch is much more helpful and I will probably share it in the future for other authors considering relaunching.
If you're an author that has been considering relaunching, Chris Fox's book on relaunching a book goes into so much more detail, is much more helpful (even for those considering relaunching series) and has action steps you can take.
All in all, it feels like this book is actually a very poor sales pitch for the author's consultation business for authors, which gets pitched at the end.
‘Wouldn’t a refresh of the book make it more interesting to newly-aware buyers?
Not being one to ignore the obvious - that while discussing the act of gaining exposure and success on in Internet we are in a daily changing and improving condition - Penny c. Sansevieri tackles a common problem among writers whose books have stagnated and offers her always professional insights on how to correct that conundrum. This is a matter of taking control as an artist in the world of self-promotion. Penny C. Sansevieri is a no nonsense thinker and writer. Beginning her career as an author ('Candlewood Lake', 'The Cliffhanger' etc) she faced the beast of competition in the publishing world, and instead of caving in, she took control, learned all the ins and outs of getting books published, and shared that hard won information and experience in such highly successful books as 'Get Published Today: An Insider's Guide to Publishing Success' and 'From Book to Bestseller: An Insider's Guide to Publicizing and Marketing Your Book!'. Now she approaches a different challenge and as always becomes the expert in her field.
Sansevieri does not waste the reader's time with puffery or examples of her own successes. Instead she opts to jump right to the essentials. Maybe you picked up this book because you’re ready to do something bold to reignite your title sales, or maybe you hate the idea of re-releasing your book, but your curiosity got the best of you. First and foremost, let me explain what my definition of a re-release is, and what it isn’t. In some cases, a re-release is the redo of the entire book or large sections of it. In other cases, a re-release is adding a chapter or two, and for some, it’s just an updated cover. No matter where you are in your process when you start reading this, don’t overthink the definition of re-release, because it doesn’t always mean you have a ton of work to do. This book will help you determine the best re-release strategy for your book—so you’re working smart, not working overtime, the steps for getting your book back on Amazon, and then some key promotional tips for making the most of your publishing efforts!
Sansevieri's book HOW TO REVIVE AND RE-RELEASE YOUR BOOK contains more useful suggestions an approaches than most of us think possible; ‘We all need a reboot from time to time, and our books are no different. Even popular television shows have seen a reboot. Will and Grace, The Gilmore Girls, X-Files, and the upcoming Murphy Brown to name just a few. Let’s face it, the reboot is all the rage these days. Book relaunches can take a variety of forms. If done right, relaunches can really enhance your overall brand, as well as your book sales. Before we dig into the hows and whys of this, let’s first look at some of the reasons you may want to republish your book. Because having specific goals is key. Wanting to sell more books is understandable, but it can’t be the only driver—it’s too broad. Revise and Re-release Last year I met an author at a writers conference who published a science fiction book about five years ago. The book was long, 400 pages, and he said nothing really happened with it. He told me, “If I had known then what I know now, my book could have done so much better. She addresses Reasons To ReRelease , ReReleasing Second Chance, Book Good Candidate, New Cover, Update Content, New Version Stand Out, How To ReUpload, Book Bundliing, How To Price ReRelease, and Promote ReRelease
The hows and whys are packed into every page of this resourceful book. If you’re serious about writing, read this book!
One thing I didn't consider when I started my career as a non-fiction indie author was how often non-fiction books (especially ones that deal with technology and online business, as mine do) need updating. I've already had to do one round of major updates, and really wish I'd had this book to hand then. I'll definitely have it by my side for the next round of revisions. I also see now how I missed out by not doing an official re-release of my books during previous updates. Again, this is something I'll rectify next time round, using the advice in this book.
The book was also valuable right now, as I'm considering a minor rebrand that will simply involve updating covers on most of my books (the author covers this, as well as much more substantial revisions to the content of the book).
This book is great for non-fiction indie authors, but could in fact be useful to novelists as well (a re-release can be a great idea if your novel didn't get the sales and reviews you would have liked first time around). Another group of authors this book will be of use to is previously traditionally published authors who are looking at a re-release of old titles as they are released from publisher contracts and regain the rights to their books. A re-release is a good time to breathe new life into those older titles.
Lately I've noticed that there are several authors who are re-branding and essentially redoing their books on various platforms. With so many things as we learn, we grow and can redo things. Part of that is in learning how to market yourself better, and that is where Penny comes in. She's released several other books in regards to how to further your exposure, how to market and how to engage your audience. With this new book, she is sharing even more with her readers this time around. Its more than making just the decision to revamp your previous release. She helps you to understand why you want to do it, how to do it, and how to engage new readers. As always, I find her books to be very helpful. Even if you're looking to publish a new book, a revamp or even just use this is a jump start, this is a great tool for you!
I love reading Penny Sansevieri's books. They're focused, packed with information without vague hints just because the author wants to keep all the information and still make some money by releasing a marketing book. THIS IS THE REAL THING. If you're about to re-release a book and even if you're releasing for the first time or it's been a while since you've released a book, read this book. It gives you ideas you didn't think of, it reminds you of the world you need to navigate in as an author and as the marketer of your own book. It gives you clear and focused steps without playing games. Not that I'm surprised, all of Sansevieri's books are like that. They truly serve the author if the author is willing to learn.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy, but the following review is completely objective. This book really plugs a gap in the market. There are loads of books about how to market your book, but this is the first one I've come across that is specifically and exclusively geared towards republishing an existing one. I found myself adding highlights and notes all the way through, and I'm looking forward to putting the ideas into practice. Referring to 'practice', this book is highly practical, and if you are re-releasing a book on Amazon it contains things you can start doing and thinking about immediately. I only wish I'd had this book when I decided to update and republish my own book. Definitely worth the money.
I could not ask for a more complete explanation of things an author should consider to improve their book sales. This brief read contains more ideas than I have ever found in one source. I was especially impressed with her discussion on book covers. From reasons WHY an author would want to rerelease or update a book, to variations on how much of a book to revise, and sharing so many ways to generate interest and garner reviews for this book in its new version, Penny Sansevieri shows that she understands the process and has walked this journey herself.
I read this book via Hidden Gems. Thank you for this opportunity. The opinions and rating are my own.
It can be daunting to republish backlist titles or to update nonfiction titles. This guide takes authors step-by-easy step through revising and updating titles to help boost sales and visibility.
As always, Penny's advice is filled with discussion of mistakes she's made or seen, and how to avoid those. Common sense plus clever marketing ideas make this a can't miss guide for those who are developing a list of titles and want to spruce up older books.
Fast, informative read. Penny is an expert in book marketing and I've been a follower for many years. Much of the advice in this book I had picked up here and there, from her various posts and webcasts, but it's helpful to have this focus on re-releases assembled in one handy guide. And her timing couldn't be more perfect, as I have three titles I am considering either bundling into a new product, or re-launching with an updated look. Thank you, Penny!
I love Penny S. We spent time together at a writers conference a few months ago. She is quick, bright, funny and very smart. That comes from all the experience she has had with her own writing and well as what she's learned from helping her author clients with their issues. All in all, Penny is a most valuable coin of the realm.
A super slim but useful overview for self-publishers on how to approach revising and re-releasing your books. This provides more an outline than particulars.
This is an excellent book for authors who are planning on revising and then re-releasing theirs books. I purchased this book to read because of my plans to re-release my original novel, Time & Consequences with a Revised 2023 Edition.
I needed some fresh ideas which I found many in Ms. Sansevieri's book. Thank you!
This book came along at the right time for me. I just removed my book from publication so I can rewrite and re-release it. I will certainly be referring to this book to go through this process. I recommend it for anyone who is considering going through this process.
Lots of great advice here. Only trouble (for me) was that she spent a lot of time on things I already understand, and glossed over ideas that I haven't ever done. Guess I need to do more research.
