A retelling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood, starring our bookish heroine Red and a misunderstood, book-loving wolf desperate for a good story.
Little Red Reading Hood loves--you guessed it--reading! She applies everything she learns from books to the real world. So, when she sets off to take her sick grandmother a homemade treat, she's prepared for anything that comes her way. In keeping with the original story, Red is in for a surprise when she arrives to find a wolf disguised as her grandmother. But this is no ordinary wolf. . . This is the Misread Wolf, who's after something more delicious than your average snack. He's desperate for a bedtime story and knows Little Red Reading Hood might just be his only hope.
3.5 stars for this new take on a classic children’s story.
A silly, bookish rendition of Little Red Riding Hood. My three and five year old enjoyed the initial suspense and silliness but lost interest as the story progressed. Perhaps this would be a better fit for older children who are more familiar with the original story.
Thank you to Hachette Book Group for sending me this physical copy to read and review with my children.
A reimagined version of the Red Riding Hood story centered on the love and value of reading. I really like the addition of book-related details (like the letters and book decorating the hood), but the pictures were a little muddled. Nice addition to a fairy tale / fractured fairy tale story time.
For more of my book content check out This is a cute retelling of Little Red Riding Hood but with a twist! A Bookloving Heroine! Little Red Reading Hood loves books and is quite bright. So as she sets out to take her sick grandmother some treats and encounters a wolf she know what to do because she has read all about it. Only this is not your typical wolf! And what he wants from Red is something unexpected. Someone to read him a bedtime story, and Red might he his only hope. A bookish heroine sign me up! Obviously as a booklover I enjoyed this twist on the original story. I think this book would be great for boys or girls. I dont think that kids necessarily need to have read the original version to enjoy this one at all. If they have read the classic then bonus! The illustrations are very cute too. Thank You to the publisher for sending us this book. Look for this one on July 2nd!
Needing a book for story time, I just picked this up.
What a Hoot!
The illustrations are different from most books I read at story time, just noted that the illustrator is a character designer from a little town outside of Rome, Italy, so that would account for this difference.
Little Red Reading Hood encounters a wolf in the woods, "Mmmm," he said, sniffing the air. "I smell my favorite smell." Throughout the story he keeps sniffing.....
There was a discussion among staff as the word "slinked" was used to describe his leaving. They all insisted it should have been slunk, but after doing a bit of research, it was decided that it could be either.
Children will enjoy this different version ----- brought to mind the Lisa Campbell Ernst edition of Little Red Riding Hood: A New Fangled Prairie Tale.

Little Red Reading Hood is off to deliver some treats to her ailing grandma. When she encounters a wolf in the forest she knows exactly what to do, because she has read about it. But what if the Wolf wants something else entirely?
Make sure you’ve read the original to your students first so that they can enjoy this clever twisted version. I say twisted, but really it is just delightful!
Little Red is a well-read little girl who is setting off to deliver a present to Grandma. Along the way she meets a wolf who smells something he loves in her bag, but the wolf didn't bargain on a well-read little girl. Of course, Little Red didn't bargain on how much that wolf loves what's in her basket. And readers, well, can readers figure out how this fractured fairy tale will turn out?
I absolutely love the twist in this telling of Red Riding Hood. Very creative and fun. And the illustration style is unique, but cute. Definitely recommended to little book lovers and fractured fairy tale fans.
It's always fun to read a new, creative re-telling of an old fairy tale, and Troy Wilson has written one that will reach every reader's heart! Little Red still loves her grandma, and when learning that she is ill, she makes a treat for her and takes off through the woods. Along the way, when meeting (guess who?) the wolf, she shows that she's been reading just how to protect herself. They are lessons from other books that she's "read"; however, taking every bit of that learning backfires into a surprise and lovable ending for books. It will make a great read-aloud to see what the audience predicts as the pages turn and how much they'll love the ending! Ilaria Campana's bright and colorful illustrations add to the action and emotion of the story beautifully!
First, I'd like to thank Hachette Book Group Canada for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review! This was a book totally up my street, and I LOVED IT ALL!
I also love how in a way it's all about not judging a book by it's cover when it comes to people... or animals of all kinds.
This is definitely a book you'll want to read to your kids or students, or even get for anyone with kids! Especially in a funny voice, I think kids would love it!
Overall this was an awesome children's story. It played on a classic but with a funny twist, and I loved the ending of the story and how it all came together!
Childrens picture book/ fractured fairy tale. In this retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red is of course on her way to her grandmother's house. But since Red is so well-read, she knows what to do when approached by a wolf in the woods. The reader may suspect a difference in this tale, as the wolf gently tries to plea his case before leaving Red alone.
I was checking books in at work and stopped to look at this. I was laughing so hard my coworker was looking at me like I was crazy.
I love it! What a fun twist on the classic fairy tale. I love that Red has red hair and glasses like me (I'm 28 and you're never too old to enjoy media representation). I love that she's prepared for so many things because, of course, she read about it. Also, clearly, you're never too old for storytime. I also liked the details with the little purple bird that you might miss if you aren't paying attention to the illustrations.
Funny fractured tale. Little Red knows exactly what to do about wolves because Red has read all about them. The story goes through all the normal Little Red Riding Hood events: walk to grandma's house, meeting the wolf, the wolf dressed as grandma, the traditional text, etc. However, when it is time to eat all the wolf really wants is the book. He wants to hear a story. I would use this tale for 3rd grade and up for grammar or just fairy tale fun.
I loved this version of Red Riding Hood reading. Such a fun way to promote reading. Red is able to out wit the wolf because she had read what to do in every situation. Except for when the wolf really just wants to be read to. Cute colourful pictures help create a humorous retelling of this normally scary fairy tale.
The story started out slow and a bit dull. Red Reading hood already knew what to do when encountering a wolf, because she read about it. But when the Wolf asks for a surprise, he doesn't know what to , but aquences to his request. The ending is what really made this book sing. #WinterGames2020 #TeamReadNosedReindeer +16
A fun take on the typical Little Red Riding Hood. I'm not sure it would work in a story time, but as a lap read I think it would work. It's quite conceptual, so you might have to talk your way through the story.
An amusing retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. The text is a little dry in spots, but I think it is clever overall. It would probably be fun to go back through the text with readers to find hints of the wolf’s true intentions.
Loved the twist in this story. I think it would be a good book to use in a book study and compare/contrast to the original Little Red Riding Hood story and who doesn't love books whose characters love reading as much as I do?
4-year-old: I loved this book 100% and 1 million and 150 and 2 million. That's a lot. I liked it because the wolf likes reading, and because they all love reading, and because she met a bird, and because she made a treat for her grandmother.
Impulse at Pima. So sweet (and exciting, too)! I admit that it took me a moment to appreciate the art, but when I got the hang of it I loved it. For fans of fractured fairy tales, of course, but also those who like to learn about my favorite theme, Other Points of View.
An awesome literary take on the classic fairytale, this remake of Red Riding Hood is smart, funny, and shows clear advantages to reading (some you may never have thought of before).
A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood that features a kinder gentler wolf. I liked the twist in this new version but feel the pace is a little slow for young readers.
