Mystic Valley #4

Some Like It Haunted

Rate this book
Reed can have any girl he wants--except the one who seems determined to make his professional life as difficult as possible. Sara's been the number one paranormal researcher in their department for years, and she's not one to let a lack of magical aptitude keep her from the top.

With Halloween drawing near Sara has one goal: to win the Montera Award and with it the chance to explore the town's most haunted mansion. The one thing she didn't count on was having to share the honor with her chief rival. Reed's not just the strongest medium in town, but the star of some of her guiltiest fantasies--fantasies where she doesn't always stay on top.

Giving in might be the best sex of their lives, but sexual magic is potent enough to wake the true inhabitants of Villa Montera. Caught in the middle of a centuries long rivalry, Sara and Reed's only hope for surviving the night is to make love, not war.

Great example of an erotic paranormal romance short story that actually mostly works. I have a hard time with shorts and so-called novellas because they so frequently are rushed, sloppy, and unbelievable. Ms. Rogers manages to dodge all those points and plops the reader into a contemporary-magic universe that makes sense from the get-go without a ton of backstory or exposition. The chemistry between the main characters pretty much crackles from the start, with lots of great and believable snarky dialog (both internal and external), and an easy, quick view of their individual hang-ups that serve as relationship-obstacles. Honestly, for the most part, the way Some Like It Haunted is crafted is just damned respectable. Not to mention the smut is super-hot without being ridiculously trite.

My only qualm with this story, and the reason I knocked off a star, was that it ended kind of abruptly. The paranormal elements weren't completely resolved, and I wanted them to be, since those were so integral in bringing the characters together in the first place.

Still, I'm super-picky about short stories / novellas, so when I actually like one, I have to tip my hat.

This book really had no relation to the first Carnal Powers book which is a pity since I really liked those crazy supernaturals. However, it did have a hot, powerful medium and a saucy, intellectual, almost magically-nil professor who are investigating a haunted house. Not bad, by any means. I was just hoping to get more face time with Lars, Claire, Kiara and Adrian.

I was a little disappointed that this didn't take off somewhere in the neighborhood of Last Hope (what can I say? I'm a series 'ho!) but other than being stand-alone when I kinda expected a continuation, I have no complaints about SLIH…except, maybe the length? *g*

Seriously though, I liked it: Short, to the point and hot.

i liked this - a nice, short, hot read.

Sara and Reed are colleagues and competitors, sent together to spend the night in a haunted house. while there they start actually talking to each other instead of just sniping, and admit they like each other. things get hot - which is when the ghosts show up.
