Montague Siblings #1.5

The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky

Rate this book
In this funny and frothy novella that picks up where the New York Times bestselling The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue leaves off, freshly minted couple Monty and Percy fumble through their first time together.

Monty’s epic grand tour may be over, but now that he and Percy are finally a couple, he realizes there is something more nerve-wracking than being chased across Europe: getting together with the person you love.

Will the romantic allure of Santorini make his first time with Percy magical, or will all the anticipation and build-up completely spoil the mood?

Reading this novella is all fun and games until it makes you devastatingly aware of the pathetic lack of romancing you're experiencing in your life.

So without further ado, here's a list of iconic and memorable moments in this book:

First of all, nothing will ever come close to touching the humour and perfect execution of the question “do you mean to tell me that you have not actually fornicated yet? being promptly met with the incredulous and indignant response “dear God, Felicity
I love Felicity she radiates such Mom Energy I want her to embarrass me in front of strangers and also make sure I drink water and make sound decisions throughout the day
“I stepped on a cockroach this morning when I got out of bed; did I tell you that?
“I know, I heard you scream
To be fair to Monty, anyone who says they’re not even moderately afraid of cockroaches is either lying or a psychopath
Speaking of which, let’s have a discussion about Monty
I love him. That’s it. That’s the discussion.
Look, I didn’t ask to be a fan of Monty. I didn’t ask to have my life disrupted by a tiny meatball of a man who is quite literally the 18th-century-version of a himbo frat boy. Why this? Why me? I didn’t ask for this
Monty telling Felicity Jesus would be mad at her for stealing his day when her birthday fell on Easter one year
Percy: *mentions how tiny Monty is*
Monty: ( •̀_•)
Monty solemnly stating that the only reason Odysseus resisted the sirens was because none of them had a dump truck as fantastic as Percy’s
Monty: *takes a deep breath*
Monty: ʱ
Anyone who has spent five seconds around Monty: yes, Percy has a nice ass, we know, you love Percy’s ass. You could write a goddamn opera in honour of his ass WE KNOW WE GET IT YOU LOVE PERCY’S ASS
Monty, lamenting the lack of, in Felicity's words, fornicating in his life: “I’m a bit concerned my virginity is starting to grow back.
[puts both hands on Monty’s shoulders and gazes intently into his eyes] Monty, you fucking idiot, that’s not how it works
Monty unsubtly flexing while cuddling with Percy to impress him with his Big Meaty Man Arms
Monty factually maintaining that he would be “sporting a semi if Percy so much as sneezes. or breathes…or generally exists
in Monty’s defense, no man will ever be as attractive as Percy emerging from the ocean shirtless, water dripping on his chest and a wide grin on his face, inviting Monty for a swim. That’s just a fact
So I'm sure you've caught on that this novella is pretty much just about Monty making commendable (if doomed) efforts to get laid
I wish I put as much effort into my college assignments as Monty did for such a noble cause
Also, I can’t overstate my appreciation for how committed Felicity was to helping Monty finally smash Percy
Not only did she come up with an ingenuously elaborate plan to get rid of the sailors aboard the ship, she also tidied up the room and lit candles and arranged for food on the table
Are there…. are there real siblings like Felicity Montague….? do they..exist?
What I should have been worried about: how I am going to pay for college
What I'd been worried about: how Monty & Percy will get it on without ruining their relationship
Seriously. This novella should just be called “Two times Monty didn’t get laid and the one time he di—what’s that? That didn’t work either? Well…
I'm actually slightly concerned about Monty, he was literally half-dead of blue balls by the end
“In my defense, we were left unsupervised
 I mean, look, that’s relatable
Plus being the gay human disaster of the family is hard work but someone (Monty) has to do it
Also apparently, Percy Newton, the human manifestation of a condensed sunshine, reads erotic leaflets in his past-time
I don’t know what to do with this piece of information. Percy’s my son. I’ve never thought about him like that and I never will. In fact, I already forgot about it. goodbye
Jokes aside, I binge read this book and it was the best therapy session I’ve ever had
Percy and Monty love each other so much which prompted a very awkward moment in which I realized the actual physical ache in my chest is because of the romance between two fictional characters
I love them so much I don’t really want to use words, just flail my arms and shriek in different pitches to express my feelings
and I'm warm with the satisfaction of knowing that Monty and Percy will forever be okay because they’ve learned the most indispensable Relationship 101 lesson:
you know what’s so hot? like sooo fucking attractive? an open and healthy communication!! feeling validated and understood and appreciated by your partner!!! now THAT's a turn-on!!!!
also, not gonna lie, I almost cried at Scipio fiercely apologizing to Monty for ever feeling like he had to hide his queerness from Scipio and apologizing that the world makes him feel as though he has to
a fictional pirate is literally a better father figure than most dads in the world

“I wish I could travel backward in time and tell Monty of two years ago, lying on the lawn of his father’s house with a bruised rib cage, realizing he was falling in love with the only person who gave him a reason to live, that he'd be here someday.

I’m on now! =)

”Someday, you little twat, I’d tell him, it’s going to be more. It’s going to be better, and so will you. Where we start doesn’t have to be where we end up.

This might have been a very short novella but it was so good and kinda heart-breaking but also very hopeful?! I really loved to be back in the Montague sibling’s world and it was so good to see more of Percy and Monty. This story played right after the events of the first book and we got a brief glimpse at their lives on the island. They are still waiting for the ships departure and Felicity as well as Scipio’s crew are a part of this short story as well. As for what it is about:

”It’s only been a month.
“Only? She arches an eyebrow. My regret that I even toed this subject with her intensifies. “I expected that once you and Percy were in agreement about living in sin, you would lean hard into it.

Haha! Yeah it’s basically about Monty and Percy finally going for the huge task of spending a night together. Seriously, Felicity’s and Monty’s conversations always give me life and those two siblings are just hilarious. It’s kinda sweet to see that despite them being super awkward around each other when it comes to the topic of love, they still find a way to talk about it anyway. Neither Felicity nor Monty are keen on exploring that topic with anyone, but their sibling bond is strong enough to be able to talk about it together. And this was extremely heart-warming and wholesome to see. =)

”I was almost always with someone because I was bored and hated myself, and it was something to do that wasn’t thinking about either of those things. I’ve never been with anyone because I loved them and wanted something more together. So this has never required any sort of emotional component, and I don’t know how to do that. I don’t even know if I can. Maybe I’m too far gone.

But oh, Monty’s trauma runs so deep it was really sad to hear him speak about his feelings and initial motivations for sexual encounters. T_T I could understand why he felt nervous about spending a night with Percy and it made me very sad to hear him talk about himself. For someone who always came across as extremely confident there are a lot of hidden wounds our poor boy has to heal. I still haven’t read the last book but I’m kinda afraid I will come to dislike their father even more. And I already hate him with the fierce fires of hell for everything he did to Monty! *GRRR*

”You don’t owe me sex. You don’t owe me anything. I’m with you because I want to be. And if we’re together, it’ll be because we both want to be. And we are going to London together because we want to. And it’s going to be a disaster. But that’s all right, because we’ll have each other, and there’s no one on this goddamn planet I’d rather be a disaster with than you.

I’m just glad Percy and Monty are so close they can talk about everything because boy, for a minute there I was really worried about how things would develop. *lol* It’s so rare to find a relationship like the one of those two and it was so, so, so good to finally have two YA characters that actually TALK about their problems and don’t fall for the typical miscommunication trope. Honestly, it was very refreshing to see how they solved their troubles. And the way Monty feels about Percy!? It was so beautiful I almost cried! I really wish we would have gotten Percy’s POV too but I suppose you can’t have everything. XD

”I want to breathe him, let him fill up my chest until my ribs strain and I break open like ripe fruit beneath a paring knife. I would be raw. I would freckle and blister in the sun. I would teach my body to regrow my heart each time I gave it to him, over and over and over again. Heart after heart after heart every one of them his.

We did get a little bit more about Scipio though and I swear this man is my hero! Why can’t the world have more Scipios? I absolutely adore this man and the way he talks to Monty! I wish Monty would have had him as a father instead of the vile and cruel creature that actually fathered him. But then again I guess that Scipio is more of a father to Monty and Felicity than their real father ever was. He is accepting and kind and he has his heart at the right place. Get yourself a Scipio and his crew to support you! <3

I laugh one short, humorless burst. “What would I have said could you vacate the apartments for a while so Percy and I can engage in illegal activities?
“Not illegal.
“They are where I come from. I shake my head, staring down at my feet. “I couldn’t have. I’ve been struck too many times.
“Then maybe I should have said it to you sooner you needn’t hide around us, he says. “I’m sorry you ever felt you had to. And that the world makes you feel as though you have to. I finally mange to look up at him, and he smiles. I almost start to cry.

This said I really enjoyed this short story and I loved to be back in their world! It was so good to see more of Monty and Percy and to find out how they eventually ended up in London in book two. “The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky was the little puzzle piece I needed in order to fill in the blanks and to go happily into book 3! If it’s not already on my TBR I’ll place it there for 2023! ;-)
All told, I can recommend reading this novella because it ultimately will end up giving you all the warm and wholesome vibes you wanted to get after finishing book one.

Why are Monty and Percy so damn cute?! T_T
I love those two and the way they solve their problems together. Monty is still my favourite bisexual disaster on two legs and Percy is ... well, perfect Percy. <33
This was such a really nice addition to the first book. Loved it!

Full RTC soon. It’s going to be a short one but it’s going to be one. ;-)

As you can see by my former review I wanted to read this very badly when it came out.
Unfortunately at first you could only get it if you fulfilled some sort of ordering criteria. I can’t remember it exactly but something kept me from getting the book.
Well, that is until I recently saw in my library and couldn’t resist borrowing it. ;-P

I’m ready for Monty’s and Percy’s love story after the first book!!! <333

Find me on:

The Gentleman's Guide to Getting Lucky is a sweet, sexy, short romp about love and sex and planning a future together.

I absolutely LOVED Mackenzi Lee’s Montague Siblings Series, particularly The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue . It was so unique, so fun, so romantic, and so poignant. Monty and Percy are easily one of my favorite literary couples in recent years.

This novella is an amuse-bouche of sorts, coming in at slightly over 100 pages. Here Monty, Percy, Felicity, and the crew of the Eleftheria are enjoying some R&R on the island of Santorini, and all are plotting their next move. While Monty and Percy’s feelings about one another are now out in the open, Monty finds himself nervous for the first time about the next steps in their relationship. Why does the idea of intimacy with Percy scare him when he’s always been a bit of a rogue? Why is he so frightened of Percy's wanting to plan a future together?

"I have never in all my born days been this clumsy about getting tangled up with someone. Perhaps it’s because it’s Percy, the first person with whom I’ve ever made it this far that mattered. Or perhaps it's because in the shadowy corners of my heart, I know I'm the sort of person you romp with for one wild night and then you climb out the window before I wake. The sort of person no one wants to be around unless there's some kind of reward involved, preferably of a sexual nature. Not the sort you bet all your chips on a life with. How long before he realizes that? And how much longer before he regrets wasting his first time on me?"

This is such a sweet, sexy story, complete with the ribald silliness that is a hallmark of these books. The craziness goes on a tiny bit too long, but ultimately, it’s just too darned short!! It’s certainly whetted my appetite for Lee’s next book in the series, which is due out in August 2020.

If you’re a fan of these characters and this terrifically fun, creative series, make sure you get your fix with this book!

WE HATE RICHARD PEELE!

Ugh, this was ridiculously cute and hilarious and I can die happy now. My heart is so full and my stomach hurts from laughing.

If you didn’t already know, I fucking adore Monty and Percy. I love them and The Gentleman’s Guide so much that I’m still, after six months and reading it three times, unable to write a review because I don’t think I can write down just how much I love everything about these characters and these books and how important I think they are. I could seriously pick it up right this moment, like I want to, and delight in it just as much as I did the first time. I LURVE it.

Anyways, the novella. Really it’s more of a short story because it’s really very short, 50 pages, but omg it was sooo fucking cute and such a perfect morsel of love, happiness and humor and I’m just SO HAPPY ABOUT IT. I love the small references that Mackenzi made back to Gent’s Guide, it made me feel like I was sharing an inside joke with friends. There was a lot of talking going on between Monty and Percy, which I was so happy about because they are extremely bad at talking about their feelings, and I loved seeing them starting to create the foundation for a strong, honest, and communicative relationship. Monty and Percy were so sweet and in love, and I couldn't stop swooning and laughing at the situations they were putting themselves in. There were multiple times when I whispered aloud "oh dear God Monty!".

This is YA, and although I had a small hope, I knew I wasn’t going to get the detailed scenes that I do in my adult MM but that being said.. This was pretty freaking good, and I just want to applaud Mackenzi for not only bringing such an amazing couple to YA, but also being like “Yep, I’m going to write a whole novella about them trying to have sex with each other, for teens to read, and it’s going to be sweet and full of funny moments and loving words, and there *mostly* won’t be any fade to black because THIS IS OKAY!!.

This review is getting long for a 50 page novella so short answer I FUCKING LOVED THIS! Monty, Percy, Felicity and their pirate companions are hilarious and I love hanging out with them. I want a million more stories about them because I would seriously read about them watching paint dry. While we’re on the topic of Felicity I will say that I was mostly excited for her book to get more glimpses of Monty and Percy, hopefully making out in the background and sticking their hands down each other’s trousers, but this made me love her so much more than I did in the first book, where she was very much a secondary character, and I’m really excited for her book and the shenanigans her and her girl gang get into!

"You don't owe me sex. You don't owe me anything. I'm with you because I want to be. And if we're together, it'll be because we want to be. And we are going to London together because we want to. And it's going to be a disaster. But that's all right, because we'll have each other. We'll be disastrous together."

“I would teach my body to regrow my heart each time I gave it to him, over and over and over again. Heart after heart after heart—every one of them his.

Oh Monty. You have to love Monty for his good intentions and bumbling ways. THE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO GETTING LUCKY was a cute, short novella that ties into the main series, but can't really be read as a standalone. I was glad to read as a sort of epilogue for book one and bridge between the main novels in the series. I’m always happy for more Monty, Felicity and Percy as I love Mackenzi Lee's characters..

This book was everything I didn't know I needed. Monty is a disaster in the most entertaining yet heartbreaking way possible. Percy is, of course, the sweetest most wonderful person to ever grace the earth. Felicity, though, is the real MVP for trying to hook them up.

This is a story where everything that could go wrong does in fact, go wrong. But, of course, things don't just go wrong, because no, that would be far too boring. Too mundane and commonplace for one such as Monty. In this book, everything that goes wrong goes so horribly wrong in the most unfortunate, dramatic, tragic and hilarious way possible.

Overall, I loved every second of it. I only wish it were longer!!

I LOVED this, it was so darn sweet and sexy. This is a short YA novella in the saga of the Felicity and Monty Montague siblings - an inbetweener coming after A Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and before The Ladies Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (the titles are just soooo cool, who could resist them?). I’ve only read this inbetweener but I’m definitely going to read the AGGVV and TLGPP. A new book in the series is due out next year I’ve already tried begging at the doors of NG and EW, but I see no ARCs.

So, Monty and Percy are in love. Monty was a bit of a swaggard before he fell head over heels in love with Percy. He wants to get it on with Percy but Percy isn’t quite ready to make the leap, so he waits patiently. When Percy is ready and the scene is set for the big event, Monty has serious performance anxiety. He had no trouble with anonymous or meaningless sex, but this was different, and he buckled under the responsibility of being Percy’s first. After failing to perform, Monty gets angry at himself and Percy, and Percy goes off to spend the night alone in his room. The next morning, on the day their romantic trip to Santortini is drawing to a close, they have a meaningful experience at the sea which sends them flying back to their rooms to have another go at it. There ensues a hilarious scene in the bedroom where anything that can get knocked down, broken, slipped on, or crashed into keeps them from finally getting down to business. The scene is so funny, and the two just keep missing the mark. My goodness. Those poor boys. You can feel their frustration.but they’ve waited this long they can wait another day, till they get back to London! You won’t need an Epilogue to figure out what lies in their future once they get home.

An easy 5 stars and ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

So funny. So entertaining. If someone told me this was an actual thing the author wrote I wouldn't have believed you simply because it's so fanfictiony. In the best way. This was so funny.

Monty and Percy try so hard to "get lucky" and it goes wrong every single time. I will probably read this anytime I need to laugh forever.

I love them. I'm so glad I decided to get this. And read it. And can't wait to read it again.

The gang is back in this short, but sweet novella. It's abso-bloody-lutely FANTASTIC! Fans of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue will not be disappointed. Mackenzi had me laughing, shrieking, and as usual sighing "Oh, Monty."

Also, if you've listened to the audio book and fell in love with Christian Coulson's voice like I have, he might sneak in narrating as you read.

Sum of feels in a gif

Omg Ditte, if you see this, please keep scrolling 🤣🤣🤣

I only read this novella for seeing felicity again, and I figured, Monty and Percy got together at the end of book 1 so surely this is just a cute lil awkward novella about them fucking for the first time (which is exactly how it was playing out for the first part)
BUT BOY WAS I WRONG. THIS NOVELLA MAKES ME FUCKING HATE MONTY HOLY FUCK

I feel like I need a Percy pov to understand what the fuck he sees in Monty and what good points of Monty kept him coming back, BECAUSE 👏 I 👏DONT👏GET👏IT👏 because he’s actually a fucking emotionally stunted insensitive fuck wit. Period. I won’t read book 3 because I never wanna see or hear from Monty ever again.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue - ★★★★

This reminded me how much fun I had reading TGGTVAV.
This was funny, and although this is about this marvelous couple getting some, they didn’t in fact got some it this short story but out of it.

In some ways I feel betrayed but it was still a great read so I’ll not get to mad about that.

Now I’m ready to read the next one!
