Great series

I've followed the series since I got my the first book as an Amazon freebie, and I'm sure glad I picked up that first book. The books have the right balance of action and human interaction, even romance. Very well written and the plot moves along smoothly. The reader gets immersed in the world of Star Runners. I'm looking forward to reading more of what happens in the Star Runner universe!

Another solid entry in the Starrunners universe. The plot follows multiple characters who all end up interacting before the story is over. I like where the author is going with this series.

The 5th book in the Star Runners series has a different feel to the rest of the books, there is definitely a stronger edge to the storyline, and it feels as if Thomas is building to something, putting various pieces in place for the next book (books?) in the series.
For the first time since Star Runners began, this book is not all about Austin Stone, the book focuses much more on Josh, his friend who has had such a brutal time during the starting books, especially book 2.
In this book, Josh is determined to return to the stars and return the ship he borrowed from the Barracudas, as well as catch up with the Rogue Gang, but, as with Josh’s luck, he finds that the Barracudas have moved on, mostly. He does find Matta, and also finds that there are things that have unfolded, things that lead to the planet of Ashia (Hey, now wasn’t there a book by this Author called L.E. Thomas called Ashia??)
Meanwhile, Legion and Zahlian forces have also been playing ‘Spy vs Spy games around Ashia (as well as other parts of the Galaxy), leading to increasing tension across the Galaxy.
One of the main focuses of the story though, is a Region known as ‘Dark Space, that no one has been able to successfully travel to and return from before. Plenty of people have tried and suffered the ultimate price.
This leads to a few different story arcs, a Dr trying to find a lost ship that she built to go to Dark Space that should have returned, and she wants to know what happened to it. A strange species of Alien that has appeared, with dangerous tech, possibly linked to Dark Space, and worst of all, Josh and Matta have learned that the rest of the Barracuda’s are in Dark Space, having been taken hostage. These storylines all intersect to a new character.
We get to meet one of the best characters in the series I think since Scorpion, Foster, a Boba Fett style ‘Bounty Hunter/Assassin/Walking War Machine that has lots of cool toys, and some of the best one liners not just in this book, but the entire series. He also opens our eyes up to the fact that there is not just the ‘Legion and ‘Zahl out there, with their war games and spy games, we knew about the Smuggling style of things from the Barracuda’s, but Foster gives us a further taste of the type of galaxy that is out there awaiting us. The introduction of this character, and this new set of storylines has allowed Thomas to show other parts of the Galaxy, and other aspects of the Galaxy that have previously been unknown to us, and this has really broadened the world building of the Star Runner universe.
All the main characters get a bit of page time, but the main story is the Josh/Foster/Dark Space angle, and this makes the 5th book not only the first book to really drift away from the ‘Star Runner concept as such, without a heavy focus on those activities, but also makes for a full of Sci-Fi action adventure story that is a lot of fun, easy to read, and easily the best of the series so far. Josh’s character has grown significantly from the somewhat immature kid that he was in the first books, and with the introduction of ‘Non-Star Runner characters it really took the focus away from it all being about Star Runners and the Mighty Austin Stone. And this is where the writing has really matured, showing that Thomas is able to take his story in different directions, growing it, even without his main character.
This book is the first after Thomas has taken a bit of a break, and he has come back with a real growth in his maturity as a writer, you can see it in his Characters and the story line.
Whilst you will probably need to have read the first 4 books to understand what is going on here, they are a good read themselves, and this makes it worth it even more, and I have even higher hopes for Part 6.
This is a great read, as with all the other books in the series it is a lot of fun, an easy read, so something you can sit back and just lose yourself in, but still enjoy a good Sci-Fi story.
