This book was previously published in Kindle Worlds and even though it has a new cover, has not changed significantly. Cooper Nelson’s SEAL career was cut drastically short when an explosion left him almost completely deaf. With so much of his pride and self-worth tied to the profession he loved above all else, Coop struggles in his nearly silent new world, his future seemingly bleak…until Commander Hurt badgers him into volunteering at the Riverton School for the Deaf. There, he meets teacher Kiera Hamilton, who opens his eyes—and his heart—to a love more fulfilling than any job could be.
Ten years his senior, Kiera can’t believe Coop would ever be interested in anything long term, but he patiently proves her wrong. And she’s not the only one enamored with the sexy former-SEAL—her impressionable first-grade students are enthralled with the man, especially Frankie. The troubled young boy flourishes with each of Cooper’s visits, which only makes Kiera fall harder.
As he learns ASL, connects with the students, and gets closer to Kiera, Coop’s happier than he’s ever been…until an attempted abduction at the school threatens to take away everything that makes his new life worth living.
**Protecting Kiera is the 9th book in the SEAL of Protection Series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s recommended you read the books in order to get maximum enjoyment out of the series.
New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Tennessee where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. She's married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.
I enjoyed reading Protecting Kiera. In this story you get better understanding how some of the veterans feel once they have been wounded and discharged from the military. Two people proving age makes no difference and neither does a disability. I love the way they got together so quickly and after a bit of shyness became inseparable.
I love how Susan Stoker writes her characters, they are typically well fleshed out and written with depth and thought. When there is drama it makes sense to the story and not thrown in because it's 70% in the book and expected. I have yet to read one that is under 4 stars for me. This one was hard for me just because of the subject but school shootings are hard for me(and a lot of people I am sure) to deal with.
Coop lost his hearing but soon gained more than he could have hoped for
An injury caused Cooper to lose his hearing and his spot in the military. He was a bit adrift, still searching for a new place in the world, when Kiera caught his eye. Brought together through mutual friends and the school where Kiera taught deaf children, their chemistry was a slow, slow burn
Cooper and Kiera’s romance took a meandering route with little drama or upheavals. I smiled that Kiera found things moving along a bit slowly for her liking nothing like a woman who knows what she wants! There was some excitement, of course, and Coop got to flex his not insignificant muscles and bravery. Their story really unfolded through their conversations. Sharing and arguing, figuring things out like everyday people do. A hallmark of this author’s common sense approach to life and love characters who are good, bad and everything in between!
Familiar characters pop up in this novella and it’s great to catch up on how they are doing. I hope there will be more in this series as I can never get enough of this SEAL team! ~Diane, 3.5 stars
It's no secret that I'm a huge Susan Stoker fan. I am wrapped up in this world and I pre order each book as they are available. This book had me on the fence because I don't like stories with a older heroine, younger man. I just don't. Call me a hypocrite because I love older men/younger women stories. It's just not my jam. However, what did intrigue me was the fact that the hero was hearing impaired. That hit close to home for me and it tilted the scales to the "read" side.
Now, aside from the older heroine storyline, I did enjoy the book. Classic SS with- -alpha male hero -heroine in a tough spot but a fighter -no cheating -no ow/om drama -no pushing away -action/suspense -some mention or interactions with past fave characters
I loved Cooper. He had lost most of his hearing and was learning to adjust. Kiera was a great heroine. Dependable, supportive and loving.
I definitely enjoyed the story. Aside from the age gap, the only other thing I was disappointed in was the lack of epilogue and HFN ending.
This was such a great book! I loved Cooper so much! Such a great guy! Kiera is great too! The age difference didn't seem a big deal to me but I understand some people do. The story spoke to me quite a bit because my Aunt was deaf and seeing someone dealing with learning ASL was interesting to read. Everything about the story spoke to me and was great to read! This is definitely one to check out!
Terrific storyline! Exciting, suspenseful, sexy, enriching, loving with a happy ever after. Loved the children in this story, they really brought a light humor and emotional part to the story.
Susan Stoker has delivered yet another heart swooning romance with Protecting Kiera.
This was a quick and sweet read and I loved every minute of it. This book is part of Elle James Brotherhood Protectors Kindle Worlds on Amazon.
Protecting Kiera brings us the story of Cooper Nelson and Kiera Hamilton. Cooper or “Coop is now a retired SEAL after he lost nearly all of his hearing from an explosion that detonated too close to him. He’s struggling with adjusting to civilian life after his dream of becoming a SEAL was taken away from. He’s now completely deaf in one ear and only has 30% hearing in his other. He wears a hearing aid and is slowly learning American Sign Language.
Kiera Hamilton is a sweet 37 year old school teacher. She teaches at the Riverton School for the Deaf where Coop volunteers during the week. Kiera is struggling with her attraction to Coop as she is so much older than him.
The character development throughout this book was gorgeous. Cooper comes a long way with accepting his hearing loss and adjusting to civilian life. Kiera goes from being insecure with herself to throwing caution to the wind and just taking what life throws at her.
I love how fierce Kiera is! She has a love for her students that you don’t see every day. When one of her students becomes threatened she turns into a mighty mama bear and does all she can to protect him.
This gives you a look into both Susan Stoker’s SEAL of Protection series as well as Elle James Brotherhood Protectors series.
I love Susan Stoker’s books but now I’m keen to start reading Elle James too!
Wow, props Susan Stoker props! I did not realize until I took a closer look at the cover, that he actually has a hearing aid on. Also love the fact there's a bit that basically says "Hey do you want to read about Swede? Go read Bride Protector SEAL (Brotherhood Protector Series Book 2) by Elle James" I find quite a few do not say where I can read about characters shown in a multi author world/kindle world which makes it hard for me to track down books. Some of the lines I was reading was too funny! I mean come on "seal" and "SEAL"? Happy to hear a little about Cutter who gets his story in the first book in the Sleeper SEAL series. Same goes to seeing bossman and his wife. Can not wait for the next Susan Stoker book, looking forward to Fish's and Cutter's upcoming story.
This is a voluntary review, I do not get paid for this!
2.5 stars Lovable characters but too much telling and talking about feelings. The usual protective alpha (“he oozed masculinity), former SEAL, struggling to adapt to a disability. There’s no conflict between the MCs and the dialogue sometimes is super sappy ( Make love with me Cooper. Put out the fire inside me that no one else but you can douse. Please. For the love of God, I need you., loc. 1085).

REVIEW: 3.75 stars--PROTECTING KIERA is the tenth installment (and novella) in Susan Stoker’s contemporary, adult SEAL OF PROTECTION romantic, military suspense series focusing on a tight knit group of Navy SEALS and the women they love. This is twenty seven year old former Navy SEAL Cooper Nelson, and teacher Kiera Hamilton’s story line. PROTECTING KIERA can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
NOTE: PROTECTING KIERA is also the latest installment in Ella James’s multi-author Kindle World of the Brotherhood Protectors.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Kiera and Cooper) PROTECTING KIERA focuses on the building relationship between former Navy SEAL Cooper Nelson, and teacher for the deaf Kiera Hamilton. Cooper’s last deployment overseas and his Navy career ended when an explosion resulted in permanent hearing loss for our story line hero. Meeting Kiera Hamilton at the School for the Deaf stirred something inside Cooper Nelson he long thought dead. Having a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, Cooper’s attraction and need for Kiera Hamilton pushed Cooper to volunteering at the school where Kiera taught the deaf and hearing impaired. What ensues is the building relationship between Kiera and Cooper, and Kiera’s struggle to accept their ten year age difference in the face of their growing love.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including many of Cooper’s former SEAL buddies: Patrick and his wife Julie, Commander ‘Tex Hurt (Protecting Melody), Matthew ‘Wolf (Protecting the Future), Slade Cutsinger and newcomer Axel Svenson ‘Swede who works for the security company known as the Brotherhood Protectors; as well as a number of students at the Riverton School for the Deaf.
PROTECTING KIERA is a quick read; a novella length story line that sees wounded Navy SEAL Cooper Nelson come to terms with his injury, his place in civilian life, and falling in love with the woman that calls to his heart. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is quick to build-their attraction to one another has already been established; the characters are colorful and energetic. PROTECTING KIERA revisits many of the author’s previous story line characters and couples, giving the reader a glimpse into what was and what will be.
I absolutely loved this story!! Once again Susan Stoker has outdone herself. Protecting Kiera is a page turner from beginning to end which provides an insightful look into the lives of those who fight to protect us all and are often forgotten!!
Yet again Susan has created "real" characters who I fell in love with as the story progressed in Kiera, Cooper, Frankie, Cutter and Swede (from Ella James' Bride Protector Seal). Through Kiera and Cooper's story Stoker provides an insightful look into the struggles and challenges faced by injured seals and their loved ones while they are trying to readjust to a life outside of service. Susan also brings to the fore the seal motto of no-one left behind in the support Cooper receives from Commander Hurt and some of the other seals we've grown to love in previous stories.
In Kiera we see a strong, powerful, loyal heroine who is not afraid to stand up to the stereotypes women face everyday in society and who will fight for and protect those she loves to the end.
From the first minute we meet Frankie his story draws the reader in. Through him Stoker gives us a view of the uglier side of life that a lot of children have to face. Of course his resilience and "awakening" had me falling in love with his character by the end of the story!!
I cannot wait to hear more about Cutter who we are introduced to in this story but will meet again in Protecting Dakota. I will also have to read Ella James' Book to discover Swedes story.
Cooper Nelson’s SEAL career was cut short when an explosion left him almost completely deaf. his life is now so changed he feels like there is no purpose to his life and even harder it is to finding something worth doing in civilian life. His Commander Hurt talks him into volunteering at Riverton School for the Deaf, and this is where his life take a turn for the better, this is where he meets Kiera Hamilton. 10 yeas his senior Kiera can't believe that Cooper would come even close to be interested in her, in anything long term, but Coop is patient when he wants something and he proves her how wrong she is. Even her students are enthralled by Cooper specially young Frankie who flourishes with each visit Cooper, all of this make her fall even more for the former Seal. As he learns ASL he connects with he students and manages to get closer to Kiera and Coop is the happiest he has been in a very long time. A great story, fast and so totally worth reading, as usual I can't wait for Susan Stoker's next book.
This is a great story. I feel for Cooper. Having to deal with his injuries and learning new skill is not easy. Yes he pulls it off with help from Kiera. She is the right woman to help Cooper, not only with her teaching him sign language but also shows him that he is not a lesser man. I love the chemistry between them.
Susan stoker adds another good book to her Protection series. As always she delivers on the action scene. If you like her Protection series add it to your list to read. If you haven't read any of her Protection series here's your chance to start. Books can be read standalone
What an incredible book by Susan, well worth the time and money to get. A lot of people have no idea of the challenges of being deaf and the brief glimpse we get into this subject is truly spell binding. ASL is truly intriguing and incredible. I can't wait for her next book to be released.
Coop was a SEAL under Commander Hurt until an explosion caused him to lose his hearing. Now he’s medically retired at 27 and feeling lost. Volunteering at a school for deaf children helps him find himself again, helped along by Kiera, who teaches there. She’s 37 and their ages bother her, but it works out. We also meet Frankie, who later befriends Annie. A nice novella that I read as an ebook. 4/5
One of my favorite books in the series. Kiera is a teacher at a school for hearing impaired children. Cooper lost most of his hearing when a bomb exploded near by. Together they find a connection.
I enjoyed this book. Love how hard Cooper falls for Kiera. They were great together. Loved staying on edge too, as a situation occurs towards the end. Kiera becomes a hero as she won’t let anything happen to her student. Very heartwarming ending. I recommend this book and loved getting updates on precious characters.
I read this because the hero is deaf, which you rarely find in a romance. Also, he's 10 years younger than the heroine, which is also rare. It's more of a novella than a full book (only 11 chapters) so it's compact and that worked better for me than this author's other books. The romance progresses fast and the conflict comes from an external source, but is quickly and easily resolved. Villain again does nonsensical things (a weakness of this author... she has difficulty building up the danger and suspense) but I was relieved that Kiera didn't get badly injured.
Protecting Korea is a novella by the most awesome Susan Stoker. I have read all her books and she never fails to entertain and delight me with her alpha Navy Seals. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is a good addition to the SEAL of Protection series, but I have to admit that I don't remember Cooper being in any of the other books. Maybe it's just my bad memory, though, because it has been some time since I read the other books. I had to assume that he was from a different SEAL team under Commander Hurt, since I didn't remember him.
This is a novella, so it doesn't have time for quite as much character development as I usually like -- but it does have enough to like the couple and want them to find their HEA. Cooper and Keira are both likable, and I liked that she was able to help him adapt to his new hearing disability.
I did think that their instalove was a bit unlikely, but appreciated that they didn't have sex until they both knew their relationship would last. That is definitely not typical in most romances these days, and I liked it. So many of today's romances are more about lust than love, so that was a nice change.
Since Cooper is retired as a SEAL (due to his injury), this book does not have as much danger/rescue as the others in the series. But that was OK, since it fit what was happening in his new retired life. I did like that the story included Tex and some of the characters from the earlier books.
This book does a good job of describing how difficult it is for a wounded warrior to have to give up his planned military career. For many soldiers, their entire lives are planned around being a soldier -- so adjusting to a disability and civilian life is very difficult.
I read the other books in this series some time ago, so I had a little trouble remembering all the characters -- but that is my fault for waiting so long to read this book. I'm now looking forward to reading the last book that is available for this series, and will probably read the Delta Force series, too.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
. Protecting Kiera is the nineth book in this series, but it is one of several additions aimed at transitioning and laying the groundwork for subsequent series. I understand why she included it in the SEALs of Protection series as she connects to several characters from that series. Readers meet two interesting lead characters in Kiera Hamilton, a 37-year-old teacher of the deaf, and Cooper Nelson, a medically discharged SEAL transitioning into a world with impaired hearing. Both Kiera and Cooper struggle with positive self-image. Kiera’s stems from preconceived notions relative to her looks and the fact that she is 10 years older than Cooper. Cooper’s stems from his struggle coping with being deaf leading him to feel his not the complete SEAL he was. Can both Kiera and Cooper find a way to cope with their emotional baggage? Will they find happiness? You must read this book to discover their path.
Ms. Stoker pens another well-written romantic suspense novel. Although there is suspense in her plot, I believe this one is more of a character-driven plot. I like how she used several characters from the series as secondary characters like: Wolf, Dude, Benny, and Tex. Wolf, Dude, and Benny were injured in their last mission and would still be recovering. Logically, she uses them to portray the camaraderie of the recuperating process. I thought it was clever of Ms. Stoker to use Tex to help Cooper emotionally navigate the transition process to being a civilian. Ms. Stoker demonstrates her skill with literary devices such as dialog, point of view and descriptive language. Her skill in craftsmanship in developing dialog that pulls the reader into this story while endearing her characters to the reader is remarkable. The internal dialog of our protagonists captures their internal struggles contribute to the believability of their experiences. I also enjoyed her use of multiple POV. This approach reveals their true character. Additionally, her descriptive scene allows readers to feel they are firsthand witnesses. I enjoyed the vivid scenes of Cooper’s interactions with the children in Kiera’s class. Little Frankie, pulled at my heart strings. I find Ms. Stoker's writing style easy to follow and her characters are truly likeable. So, if you enjoy military suspense romances and you want to curl up with a delightful read. Nice job, Ms. Stoker!
What if you suddenly lost everything that you knew and has worked so hard for? Would you begin all over again or would you try to adapt and do whatever it takes to convince the Commander that you're still an asset to the SEAL teams? Cooper has been a Navy Seal for most of his adult life and with the help of his former team he'll learn how to adapt.
Kiera Hamilton teaches at a school for the deaf and when Commander Patrick Hurt (Protecting Julie) recommends a volunteer who just happens to be a medically retired Navy SEAL to assist in her class she reluctantly agrees. When she meets him, she realizes that she knew him 10 years ago. As she teaches Cooper how to use ASL they both wonder if the growing attraction between them could be pursued. But Kiera is 10 years older than Coop she tells him it will never work. Now doesn't that sound like a challenge he's willing to take just to prove her wrong and he's determined to take that challenge.
Cooper Hamilton lost almost all his hearing after an IED explodes near his backpack. He's having a really hard time adapting to a not hearing so when Commander Hurt orders him to volunteer at Kiera's school little does he know that the children were just what he needed. He tells them of his former job and the kids help him that can still be himself but just use his hands to speak and hear. When he meets Frankie (one of her students ) who begins refusing to using ASL Cooper decides to only to help him but reach him the seal sign for acknowledgement which is a "manly" head tilt. They will both learn through each other. When one of Frankie is kidnapped by his non-custodial parent, Kiera doesn't hesitate to try and save him. With the help of Swede, Cooper runs to try and save both the woman he loves and Frankie.
I loved this story not just for the May December romance but again having the SEAL of Protection guys and Swede from the Brotherhood to me it's the best two book series meshed together
What a completely fantastic novella right here! Susan Stoker brought a younger/mostly deaf hero with a older heroine to us that left me completely in LOVE more so, with her incredible writing. I don't usually care for a younger hero/older heroine pairing all that well but seriously, Susan Stoker knows how to write a younger hero who is ALL man, sexy, protective, and the most mature hero of all time. Cooper is EXACTLY the type of hero I ADORE. He is gorgeous, kind, sweet, all alpha with a heart of gold that ONLY Susan Stoker can create. Kiera is the exact type of heroine I could picture being best friends with. She is normal but beautiful. She has a normal job with an average body type that seems way more realistic who happens to capture the heart of a true hero. I can't get enough of this type of romance!
I fell instantly in love with this novella the moment I started it. Susan knows how to bring me to my knees with her words, her characters, her irresistibly kind and respectful romances that have just the perfect amount of heat and sweetness. Kiera and Cooper are beautiful together and when we get glimpses of some of my FAVORITE SOP heroes and heroines I smiled from ear to ear and it was hard to contain my excitement and happiness. And the suspense and action..oh yea, its THRILLING!
Protecting Kiera gets a STUNNING AND SWEET FIVE SHOOTING STARS! Susan Stoker gets my full approval EVERY TIME and I love reading her books.
