The first book in Molly Harper's uproariously funny, sinfully sexy new Mystic Bayou series!
Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay's career has taken a turn south.
Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations. Mermaids and gator shifters swim in the bayou. Spirit bottles light the front porches after twilight. Dragons light the fires under crayfish pots.
Jillian's first assignment for the League could be her last. Mystic Bayou is wary of outsiders, and she has difficulty getting locals to talk to her. And she can't get the gruff town sheriff, Bael Boone, off of her back or out of her mind. Bael is the finest male specimen she's seen in a long time, even though he might not be human. Soon their flirtation is hotter than a dragon's breath, which Bael just might turn out to be...
Molly Harper is the author of more than 40 romance titles including the Half-Moon Hollow series, the Mystic Bayou, the Starfall Point series, and her first murder mystery, A PROPOSAL TO DIE FOR. She lives in Michigan with her family. For more information, go to .
Cute book is cute. I only wish that the mystery behind the murders wasn't REALLY FREAKING OBVIOUS and yet the police officer is all 'I can't figure out what is the connection between these victims' *insert side-eye here*. Then there is the romance. I was enjoying the 'I think you're hot but I find your personality annoying' trope, until it suddenly ends with them having sex. And I don't mean that in the heat of the moment they put aside their logical feelings to give into their carnal ones. No, that would have made sense and I would have been ok with that. Instead, we get this weird scene where once the sexy-times started I literally went back to re-read a couple of pages just to make sure I somehow didn't accidentally skip something because it just comes out of NOWHERE. It's weird. But maybe that was just me? I don't know.
This makes it sound like I didn't like this book, but I did in a general way. It's cute fun to pass your reading time if you want a break from some of the heavier books out there (in this genre or otherwise).
Molly Harper knows how to write funny, quirky characters. I love having an author that I can count on to always make me smile.
In this book, we have Jillian (a great name, IMHO), and Bael (not as good - this guy is named after an evil god in the bible who demanded death sacrifices?). He's the sheriff of a town that has a mixture of all kinds of magical people and humans. She's a scientist who is there to write a report on how their town is able to blend this mixture of magic-kind and still get along really well. It's basically like one of those horrible smoothies with a mixture of vegetables and fruit that you are no way going to try but your husband nags you into it and it's surprisingly good. How in the hell did he make me not taste the kale? I hate kale! What kind of sorcery did he use?
That's MY kind of smoothie. Take that, husband who's trying to make me healthy!
As Jillian is doing her work , a murder-mystery comes up.... and even though I guessed the murderer right away, it was a lot of fun. I loved how the mayor reacted to whether or not they should alert the people that there was a potential serial killer in the midst:
"Should we hold a town meeting? Put a notice in the newspaper? Establish a curfew? I don't want to be the mayor from Jaws, Bael."
Yeah, that guy was a dick. But, Fox News endorsed him and you know how the oldies are...
The mayor of the town was a hilarious side-character. I really hope he gets his love story next.
How to Date Your Dragon By: Molly Harper Narrated by: Amanda Ronconi, Jonathan Davis Series: Mystic Bayou, Book 1 This gal comes to town to do a study on how this town has managed to all get along together which is very unusual since the town is made of various kinds of supernatural beings and creatures. She gets all kinds of attention! Then starts the murders! This is so funny! It is funny, romantic, strange (in a good way), and has the best characters in it! The narration is made up by two narrators, male and female. Both did an excellent job!
Did you know a person can be murdered by ragweed? Okay, maybe that’s an overstatement, but the ragweed count where I live is tryna kill me, bruh. When I’m feeling uggy, there’s only one thing to do . . . .
That’s where my go-to-gal Molly Harper comes in. Both her Southern Eclectic and Naked Werewolf series have served as brain candy in the past and since Halloween is just around the corner I thought some more shifty good times were in order.
The story here is about our leading lady Jillian’s new job down in the swamp. She works for an organization called “The League (extraordinary gentlemen excluded this go around) and has been sent to Cajun country because . . . .
Your town represents one of the few settlements where supernatural creatures from nearly all cultures live and work together in relative peace, and have for generations.
Jillian’s assignment is to figure out just how these beings have been so successful with their integration before all of us normies discover that everything we ever read about in fairy tales is real and to prevent a “War of the Worlds phenomenon all over again because, in case you aren’t aware . . . .
The only person in town who isn’t so keen on letting her in on all the community secrets is Bael, the local sheriff. You know what that means, right? They gonna bang . . . . .
Hey Girl. Yes. Cool people are.
Of course the sheriff in question looks something like this . . . . . .
So major sploosh. And also, per the title . . . . .
Things are gonna get HOT! *ba dum ching* I’ll be here all week, folks.
Oh, and random supes are popping up dead because DUH, it's pretty much obligatory for books like these to have a bit of a mystery for these meddling kids to solve.
This book made me like . . . . .
Jillian wasn't a pushover/damsel in distress - Bael was sex on a stick without all of the alpha male B.S. that doesn't always work for me. There was humor and there was whodunit. What more could a gal ask for in her smut?
I’m definitely reading the next one. I mean who DZ’t want to have sex with a grizzly shifter????
How To Date Your Dragon is a fantabulous paranormal adventure that takes you to the sexy culture of the bayou, where various shifter species live in harmony and a killer on the loose and an enthralling tale between a dragon and a human researcher....
A couple days ago I saw this book in the featured Audible Romance Package titles, and i realized that I hadn't picked up Molly Harper in quite a while and decided that trying one of her audiobooks would be a refreshing treat and I am SO glad that I acted on my instinct and grabbed this book because WOWZERS!! I mean seriously, I had such a blast with this book. I am not saying that this is the best book ever written but boy this book took me through so much and I LOVED every second of it. Honestly, I just couldn't put this book down, and doubled my workouts so I could just listen LONGER. It just made me so happy from beginning to end and I SO didn't want it to end. Dang it, and then I learn that this is a new series and I have to WAIT for book two----pure torture Molly Harper.....horrible torment!
Now let's get starting on what makes this book so amazing. Our feisty and tempting key players in this tale are :
Jillian Ramsay, our fun heroine, is an anthropologist, and never imagined why the board of directors would call her on such an important mission. She is smart, funny, feisty but sweet and holds her ground. Bael Boone, our sexy dragon, is the sheriff of the mystic bayou, he is stubborn, grumpy but has a soft underbelly. He is secretive but protective of the town he protects and his horde of gold.
So this book begins when Jillian, is about ready to leave for her mission to South America to study the sex-crazed dolphins when her boss gets injured by a unicorn and she will have to take over his job and his upcoming research project to the Bayou. Jillian has no idea why they would pick her up for the job, and it's her first assignment and is totally outside her realm. But the Bayou is very eager to have someone from the League for Interspecies Cooperation. With the League getting ready to reveal to the world the existence of shifters that live among humans. The mystic bayou in Louisianna has somehow managed to have a town of humans and shifters that work and play together in harmony. And the League needs to know how they go about it. So Jillian heads down the middle of nowhere with barely any cell coverage and a town where not everyone is happy to have a stranger. She first meets with the mayor of the town, a super friendly and affection bear shifter, who shows her where she will be living and will be escorting her to events to introduce her to other people in the town. Which is when she meets the grumpy sheriff of the town Bael. As Jillian begins with her study, soon newly changed humans to shifters are being murdered, and it all starts around the time that Jillian enters the town. Despite her struggles with her research study, she begins to find her time with a sexy Bael worth more than the effort, a dragon shifter who makes love to her on his gold treasure and treats her so gently, but will Bael and Jillian be able to find the murderer before he kills again???
There were so many fun aspects of this story, to be honest, and I honestly had a blast listening to this story. First off, the bayou culture was so fascinating that I found myself listening to New Orleans style jazz, looking up Cajun recipes and researching my own trip to the Bayou. Molly Harper did a fantastic job with the setting, she just makes you yearn to be seeing this in reality. I also found the small town so fascinating here. What was most fun was the shifter species. From river nymphs, dragons, alligators to bears and werewolves and so many more. There is such a strong bond that these members of this community have together. And I just fell in love with so many side characters especially the Mayor and his mother. They just had me grinning from ear to ear so charming, cuddly and sweet.
Now for the really good part....the ROMANCE!! This was packed with just about everything I look for in a love story and Molly Harper just socker punched me with this book. Because honestly I didn't see this one coming and it just got better and better with each hour of listening. At first, Jillian and Bael have some great chemistry and they like to argue...a LOT and boy it's so fun to see them banter back and forth. But their relationship takes a new turn when the first body turns up and Jillian discover it and they become so much closer to each other. Bael may be a dragon shifter but Jillian has no idea what he plans for her, especially in showing her his horde of gold. Now in this book, we see that Dragons are REALLY protective of their gold, but I just wanted to *sigh* in these sweet scenes that develop between Bael and Jillian and especially the love scene on his gold. One of the best sex scenes I have read in a long while. Because even though it's not super steamy the way its written is so sensual yet tender. I honestly can't stress enough how much I truly adored this book with the murder mystery, the mystic bayou and its charming town and the sizzling love story that flairs to life!!! One of the best books I have read in 2018 so far and satisfied every romantic bone.....A DELIGHTFUL HOARD OF GOLD TO TREASURE!
The following ratings are out of 5: Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Romance: 💙💚🖤💜❤️ Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔 World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌍 Character development: 🤨🥹🙂😣🥰
The heroine:Jillian - she works for the International League for Interspecies Cooperation, who thinks that with camera phones everywhere and social media being what it is, that it is just a matter of time before supernatural creatures are outed to the world. While on her way to her first field assignment in South America, when her mentor was injured and she was re-routed to Mystic Bayou, Louisiana to study the town full of humans and supernatural creatures in order to see how they all get along.
The Hero:Bael - Sheriff of Mystic Bayou. He is worried about secrets that the town is hiding will be found out by the Doctor coming to town. He is even more worried when the Doctor that comes to town is not the man he checked out, but Jillian, who is unknown to him.
The Story: Jillian is intrigued by the fact that she was the person assigned this job in Louisiana since she had never yet been on a field assignment. Though she is exited to see the supernatural outside her research in a educational setting while getting her doctorate in paranormal studies. She is happy to see that instead of a tent, she is put up in the house of a witch that passed away, which included a swing bed, ghost lights and more.
I got this audiobook on audible plus, because I like dragon shifter stories. But was very pleasantly surprised to find that this was one of those books which had a bunch of supernaturals in one town, it had some great storylines and a whimsical approach, where the main character, a human woman is aware of the supernatural and fascinated by every aspect of it, this was her first time actually seeing some of these things in real life.
There are some great things in this book that are different from a lot of other paranormal books I have read or listened to. For example there were supernatural creatures and bits of whimsy that I have rarely seen, like alligator shifters, mermaids, sex crazed dolphins, unicorns, magic pie and dragon hordes. It reminded me a bit of the Whispers from the Bayou series by Sandra R. Neeley that I really enjoyed for the same reasons. Plus the romance was terrific. There was chemistry like crazy between Jillian and Bael.
The narration was dual narration and the book was told from dual points of view. Narrators Amanda Ronconi and Jonathon Davis did a terrific job on this one. Both narrators have a bunch of different voices and accents including southern, cajun and more which were used for different town residents. This was a great paranormal book with a very mysterious storyline about a rift in the bayou which drew the magical people to Mystic Bayou hundreds of years ago that seems to be getting stronger and having a huge affect on the people. There are six books and two novellas in this series and all are on Audible Plus, so I plan to listen to all of them if the rest live up to this one.
This book is an Audible Original. The print copy has yet to be releases, but I encourage you to listen to the audiobook.
Audio: This was my first time having two narrators. They did a wonderful job. It took some getting use too having a female and male narrator, but I did enjoy the different voices. I liked how it changes in each chapter; between the two narrators. It was different, but enjoyable. I will say I liked Amanda Ronoconi’s Cajun accent. Jonathan Davis did a good job too, but I did prefer the female narrator.
Our lead characters: Jillian is smart and kind, but can also be a firecracker. Bael is gruff, but he cares about the residence of Mystic Bayou, unlike the other dragons in town, which makes him an outcast in the family.
The romance: It was a little to fast for me, but still satisfying. I would have liked them to have spent more time together developing the romance. We kinda skip the dating steps. Bael jumps headfirst into his feelings for Jillian. She’s a bit more reluctant, but in the end they where a nice couple.
I had so much fun with How to Date Your Dragon. Their where several funny moments that had me laughing out loud. I got a kick out of why Jillian ended up going to Mystic Bayou instead of the man that was picked out for the job. I adored the town, Mystic Bayou, and the characters. The story was short and will probably be novella length when it is printed. The plot packed a punch. We get Jillian’s introduction to the town, a little mystery when towns people start dying, and a suspenseful plot. The story moved at a nice pace and kept me captivated. Their are a few twists that where intriguing. I loved several of the secondary characters we met; especially Babel’s friend the town’s Mayor, Zed, who’s a bear shifter.
I adored listing to How to Date Your Dragon and can’t wait to return to Mystic Bayou.
Within five minutes of starting How to Date Your Dragon, I was wearing a big goofy grin on my face. Molly Harper is a very talented author and I absolutely love her sense of humour.
The characters were interesting, the storyline held a hint of intrigue which kept me entertained, and the connection between Jillian and Bael jumped off the pages. I was completely satisfied with this story and I will not hesitate to read or listen to more from this author.
Both narrators do an amazing job. Their voices were smooth and easy to listen to and I never struggled to tell when the characters changed. I would definitely listen to stories narrated by them in the future.
SUCCESS!! Can't wait to continue with the Mystic Bayou series.
Throw all the stars at this book!!! It is excellent!! Molly Harper, who I LOVE, BTW, has excelled in this book. She is introducing a new series of shifters and magic and romance. Our heroine is funny, confident and strong. Just the kind of girl we all love to invite into our book friendship party. You know, that party you would throw with lots of fattening foods and dancing, and has Chris Hemsworth tending bar. (If you’re gonna dream, make it big) Its the party you invite all the literary characters that have become your best friends and you would love to party with. Take some time to imagine that party. Go ahead I’ll wait. 😎
So now that we’ve had a great time at our party, and instead of a hangover the next morning we just have great memories, I’ll tell you a wee bit about this wonderful book. The edition I enjoyed was on audio read by the incomparable Amanda Ronconi. I would listen to this actress read the phone book. Our heroine is an anthropologist who studies the supernatural. Mostly shifters. She is detoured from the study of the mating habits of dolphin shifters (the mind reels) to study a group of shifters in the bayou. How does such a diverse group live harmoniously? Our hero is s dragon shifter who had closed himself off. Meanwhile danger is lurking in the shadows.
Excellent book and I can’t wait to read more in the series!
Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay’s career has taken a turn south when she sent to the town of Mystic Bayou by “The League a organization that studies paranormal creatures to study how different paranormal species and humans coexist peacefully, conducting interview with the townspeople and compiling data to use as a guide for humans and paranormal creatures to co-exist.
This is Jillian’s first big assignment, She was sent at the last minute because her boss was injured in an accident involving a unicorn. The town’s folk are generally very welcoming of Jillian, most especially the fun loving mayor Zed, a bear shifter and Bael, a dragon shifter and the sexy town sheriff.
Unfortunately, after Jillian arrives, a few of the residents are brutally murdered, putting Jillian smack in the middle of a criminal investigation and in danger.
This is the first book in MH’s new Mystic Bayou series and I have to say I throughly enjoyed it more the second time around. We’re treated to MH’s quirky characters and snarky sense of humor, looking forward to the next book!!
This was a so much fun. Molly Harper knows how to entertain: there is a set of solidly likeable characters, witty banter, a nice romance that's not all-consuming and there's an interesting story backing it all up and I haven't mentioned the quirky, magical town in the Louisiana Bayou that I loved.
I first read a short novella from this series (2.5 Even Tree Nymphs get the blues) which I was not enamoured with beacuse of the wooden & annoying MCs. However, I totally liked the set of supporting characters (Gillian, Bael, Zed, Danni and Sonja) because they were fun and I really felt like hanging out with them some more, so I decided to start at the beginning and I'm glad I did.
How to Date Your Dragon is the initial offering in Ms. Harper’s new audiobook-first Mystic Bayou series. The book takes place in modern-day Louisiana, in a world where a limited number of humans know about the existence of the paranormal beings who live among us. The League for Interspecies Cooperation is one group who knows about the paras and is preparing for the day everyone else finds out.
Jillian is sent to the town of Mystic Bayou by the League to study how different paranormal species and humans coexist peacefully, and catalog it so that it can be used as a guide for future towns once the general human population discovers paranormal exist. She is sent at the last minute because her boss was injured in an accident involving a unicorn. The town’s folk are generally welcoming of Jillian, most especially the mayor, Zed who is a bear shifter, and Jillian’s love interest: Bael, who is a dragon shifter and the sheriff. However, after she arrives, a few of the paranormals are murdered, putting Jillian in the middle of a criminal investigation.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to How to Date Your Dragon. It’s trademark Molly Harper humor, but a little less snarky. Jillian is smart and kind; she can be precious and darling, but also a firecracker. And Bael is a perfect match for her (and she for him). Bael is gruff, but he cares about the residents of Mystic Bayou, something unique among dragons, making him a bit of an outcast in his family. I love how Bael just jumps headfirst into his feelings for Jillian, even if she’s a bit reluctant.
In addition to the romance, the book features a solid mystery. Residents are being brutally murdered, something that hasn’t happened in the small town in years. I like how Bael and Jillian work side by side to solve the crimes. And then there is the aspect of the rift, about which we learned very little, but is exciting, and I hope we get more soon.
The narration from Ms. Ronconi is exactly what I’ve come to expect. She hits all the southern dialects and seems to alter her voice just right to fit high-speed Jillian and more laid-back Bael and Jed. I started at 1.25x speed since that’s what I always use for her narration; however, I needed to speed it up for Mr. Davis, and then just kept it at 1.5x speed. Mr. Davis’s narration took a little getting used to, probably because I’m so used to Ms. Ronconi going solo. I liked his voice for Zed and most of the males. The females are a bit soft. My biggest issue with his performance was the high volume of production errors where it is evident his parts were re-dubbed after the fact. It became very annoying.
In the end, I loved listening to How to Date Your Dragon and cannot wait to see what Ms. Harper does with this wonderful new series.
My Rating: A AR narration: A JD narration: B+ / B- (the production issues are the only thing bringing down his rating)
This author has a formula for her paranormal romance books that suits the novella length very well.
Jillian is an anthropologist with a secret group who are aware of the existence of mythical creatures. She's been sent to the town of Mystic Bayou to research the success of a mixed community of paranormals and ordinary humans. There she encounters the town sheriff Bael, a dragon shifter and there's an immediate attraction between them that both are determined to resist. All with the backdrop of murders that seem to be stalking Jillian's presence.
Fun, light and with drama added in the murder mystery as well as Jillian's determination to have a career seemingly incompatible with a romance in a small town.
This was fun to read but I thought the mystery element was weak. The sheriff and Mayor could not figure out what all the deceased had in common when it was obvious from the get go. I can't wait to see who Zed gets paired with.
Shifters of every variety liveopenly with humans in the small town of Mystic Bayou while the rest of the world remains unaware. The League for Interspecies Cooperation studies these creatures and as concerns grow that the secret world of shifters will be exposed they decide to begin a study of Mystic Bayou, Lousiana. It is their hope it will be an outline for future societies.Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay's first assignment is derailed, and she is sent to Mystic Bayou after her mentor is injured.
As one would expect of a small southern town, the folks in Mystic Bayou aren't exactlyhappy to see Jillian. They don't take kindly to strangersespecially ones who intend to study them. From the moment Jilian parks her van outside of city hall and meets the mayor, a bear-shifter named Zed I was hooked. City Hall houses everything, including the local sheriff's office.Bael Boone, whom Jillian describes as the finestspecimenof a man she has seen in a long time, is not at all happy to see Jillian. If he had his way, she'd be leaving town. I loved their initial banter and couldn't wait for more!
The story, available first on Audio, is narrated byAmanda Ronconi and Jonathan Davis. Amanda was the perfect choice for Jillian. I was pleased they decided to add Jonathan Davis to the mix While he is a new to me narrator his accent and deep baritone voice lent itself perfectly to the male voices. He truly enhanced the humor, particularly for Zed and Bael.
Mystic Bayou is such a fascinatingtown. It consists of a tiny main street and then there are homes set along the bayou and deep in the woods. There are all sorts of creatures and some unusual anomalieswhich should prove to be very interesting. I loved the concept of Jillian being an anthropologistand interviewing residents. While she may not have field experience, her handling of the town and in particular Bael was well done and hilariousto witness. Groping shifters, pie, and Bael made for good times.
Harper threaded an exciting murder-mystery into the tale that added suspense and aided the romance. All resulted in a fun, entertaining and engaging listen. Thereare well-placed sex scenes that were delicious without being overly detailed making this a good fit for everyone. I loved how the story wrapped up and teased us with things to come.
This is a more-or-less by-the-numbers paranormal romance, though since it's Molly Harper at least all the elements work. The world building is, appropriately enough, a kind of jambalaya of just about everything (except maybe vampires). The Southern Louisiana small town of Mystic Bayou has a mix of all kinds of shifters and fae and Jillian is sent by the sooper seekrit league to study how they get along so well because it's only a matter of time before supernaturals aren't so seekrit any more and a template for cooperation just might come in handy when that happens. And then plot plots and Jillian and Bael (the town lawman) interact enough to know they're made for each other and it works out in the end.
Which would have had this in the three-ish star range except for two factors. First, it's Molly Harper and I just love her stories (usually). The banter is good and the relationship interesting and with enough left turns in everything else to at least keep my interest. Second, this is an audible-only release (I think. I can't find it on any other outlet) and the narration is absolutely outstanding. Not only do we get the always excellent Amanda Ronconi (who does all of Harper's audio, I'm pretty sure), but she's joined by the incredible Jonathan Davis—whose smooth drawl went right to my heart. Seriously, I may just look up other books he's narrated if there's a chance he's talking Southern in them. Sigh. Anyway, talk about a strong team. Plus, bonus points, the story is part of the Romance subscription, so picking it up was a complete no-brainer.
Which leaves a solid four stars for three outstanding artists doing their job very well.
A note about Steamy: There are two explicit sex scenes which is the middle of my steam tolerance in such a short story.
Have you ever read a story that is paranormal, mystery and romantic comedy? Well, here's one for you. There's one more thing, the story takes place in a small town. You Know, gossip and everyone in everyone's business. Funny and caring folks. And the most interesting thing, they are all different species.
A Molly Harper book narrated by Amanda Romconi yes please! A quirky anthropologists, a sexy dragon shifter, and a bunch of other delightful magical characters, I'm a happy girl! an enchanting listen the perfect blend of paranormal, Mystery, romance, and magic. Can't wait to dive into the next in the series.
A super quick and fun read, How to Date Your Dragon is another well-written supernatural quasi mystery by . Her latest release is set in Mystic Bayou, a small town in Louisiana, where humans and supernatural creatures coexist peaceably.
Jillian, an anthropologist and newbie with the League for Interspecies Cooperation, is sent to Mystic Bayou to research their success in peaceable coexistence. You see, the majority of people in the world have no idea that supernatural creatures exist and the League is trying to plan for the time they can make this known, having a workable model ready.
Mystic Bayou is full of lovable characters, most notably Zed, the Mayor, and Bael 😍, the Sheriff. In totally predictable fashion, Jillian initially thinks that the whole town is full of backwards Southerners, but, of course, she grows to love them and their small town values and their slower lifestyle during her tenure there (and it's all good). PLUS... HEA with a gorgeous dragon! 💛💚
I am a huge Molly Harper, but not just Molly I also equally love Amanda Ronconi so when I saw they added another narrator. I was a little worried but not too much and let me tell you Jonathan Davis’s voice is the voice of Bael.
Jillian and Bael meet because she is set out to record the why’s of this town. Why does it work and how can it be replicated.
She works for a cooperation that wants to make the coming out of shifters and other creatures that live among the humans. It is Jillian’s job to show that many can live in one place and still live with human’s peacefully.
These characters are unique, witty, snarky and funny and you will not be disappointed in this story. You will get sucked in just as I have.
I love the back and forth between Jillian and Bael. But I also like the connection between all the character’s it feels like friends and that for me is the reason I like Molly’s work so much she can make 1 or 10 people in a book feel like your friend or friends and that is entertaining to me.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
Audiobook: Narrators Amanda Ronconi and Jonathan Davis
Holy fireballs! This narration was not just a book being read to me, this was a performance! BOTH of these narrators brought this book to LIFE! I’m talking, perfect accents, different voices for every…single…character, and their own interpretation of how the words should be spoken. Their performance is reason alone to listen to this one. I need every freaking audiobook both of them have recorded! Even while the story was a bit lacking in areas and had some issues I would’ve grumbled about if reading, this narration made everything perfect. You want to talk about magic? THIS is magic!
I had so much fun listening to this audio! Yes, definitely the narrators made it everything, but there were so many witty comments and interactions between the characters here. And, forgive me for blabbering about the narration again, but some of the funniest moments were due to the narrators. It was the WAY they said it. Some of the words alone wouldn’t have been funny. Now, that’s not to say this book isn’t witty, it definitely is. I just can’t separate the book from the audio though. I’ve never had that problem before. So, that said, I’m just going to leave this one be, because simply put: this book should be LISTENED to!
P.S. I also listened to segments of this one over and over again because I loved it so much. I probably listened to the whole book a total of 3 times in all. And I’ve never done that before either!
I thought this story was just as cute and fun as all get out, but that is kinda what I expect from Molly Harper. I can't wait for the next books in the Mystic Bayou series to see what the magi are getting up to down in the Lousiana swamp.
This book is an Audible Original - so the print copy has yet to be released. But I encourage you to listen to the audiobook if you are able. The narrators did a great job... but I really really liked the female narrator Amanda Ronconi. She did a great (and believable) Cajun accent, probably the best I have heard in an audiobook. I wish she had narrated the whole book just to have continuity, but Jonathan Davis didn't do a bad job either.
Jillian Ramsay is a scientist and researcher working for a big organization that studies supernatural communities. In this story, supernaturals are still living under the radar and mostly without humans being aware, except for the League for Interspecies Cooperation. When Jillian's boss gets handsy with a unicorn, she gets stuck taking his place to conduct an anthropological and societal study down in the swamp known as Mystic Bay. Jillian's introduction to Southern Louisiana was about like my own, and I totally empathized with her drive into the muggy humidity, weird smells and large bugs. (Is it weird that now I miss it a little bit?) As this is Jillian's first assignment, she takes on everything with a wide-eyed wonder that was somewhat contagious. I liked her immensely.
But Bael Boone, sheriff and dragon shifter, doesn't like unknown quantities in his small town. There are things happening that they want to keep off the radar of the League and the populous as a whole, and he just knows that Jillian is trouble with a capital T. But Bael also couldn't deny his immediate attraction to the frazzled blonde, and something about her gets him blowing smoke rings at every turn. He was a great growly and grumpy dragon hero, and I loved him.
This story is on the shorter side, I imagine it will be around novella length when the print version comes out. But I felt like the plot packed a punch for the length that we got. Not only do we get Jillian's introduction to society, the emerging and building of romance, but also we get a suspense plot when people around Mystic Bayou start turning up dead. The story moved along at a nice clip and kept me captivated the entire time. There are a couple twists in there that made things interesting as well. I hope we get additional books in this series soon.
How to Date Your Dragon was an okay audiobook. Honestly, I picked this book because it was super short and free on my audible. I also feel like I've read something like this before so I was intrigued. Yet, when I dove into this.. it was just okay.
In it, you will meet Jillian and Bael. She is an anthropologist and he's a sheriff. If you ever watched Bones, it's kind of like those two main characters. They both live and work in a town that is mixed with humans and supernaturals. It was a bit entertaining when the murder mystery came into play - mostly because it reminded me of brennan and booth. However, I didn't really care who the murderer was this time around. Maybe it's because I'm way too excited for this vacation I'm about to go on or the fact that I'm still dealing with this random sickness that I got a day ago. WHO KNOWS - just know that I didn't care.
I will admit that these two were cute though. So they had that going for them. Other than that, it was an okay book. I could see myself diving into the next book of this series if it was free and on audible.
DNF I was really enjoying this book, despite the dragon shifter love interest being a cop (he felt more like a community protector than a tool of the state) then it had to go and make the shifters fucking Confederates. One of them calls the Civil War “The war of Northern aggression. Seriously? You’d think that people who had to live in secret, under the thumb of powerful governing body that never had a say in creating wouldn’t side with enslavers.
