Danger threatens the stability of the galaxy in this intriguing second novel in The Serrano Legacy—from Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Moon.
After narrowly escaping from a twisted cabal that organized hunting parties using human prey, ex-Regular Space Service officer Heris Serrano and her wealthy employer Lady Cecelia must transport a special passenger home.
He is Prince Gerel—first in line to the throne. Unfortunately, he was also a somewhat unknowing participant in the “hunt, and his family is quite eager to avoid a scandal. But Lady Cecelia notices that Gerel is not himself. In fact, he seems mentally impaired, as if he’s been drugged, but the prince’s possible poisoning is only the beginning.
When Heris and Cecelia arrive at the royal stronghold of Rockhouse Major, they are pulled into a political conspiracy rooted in pettiness and desires for revenge. As outside agents make moves to unseat the throne, Cecelia is incapacitated by a bitter enemy from her past.
Without the protection of her benefactor, Heris and her skeleton crew must navigate the perilous halls of power to rescue Cecelia, the prince, and possibly the universe
Elizabeth Moon was born March 7, 1945, and grew up in McAllen, Texas, graduating from McAllen High School in 1963. She has a B.A. in History from Rice University (1968) and another in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin (1975) with graduate work in Biology at the University of Texas, San Antonio.
She served in the USMC from 1968 to 1971, first at MCB Quantico and then at HQMC. She married Richard Moon, a Rice classmate and Army officer, in 1969; they moved to the small central Texas town where they still live in 1979. They have one son, born in 1983.
She started writing stories and poems as a small child; attempted first book (an illustrated biography of the family dog) at age six. Started writing science fiction in high school, but considered writing merely a sideline. First got serious about writing (as in, submitting things and actually getting money...) in the 1980s. Made first fiction sale at age forty--"Bargains" to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword & Sorceress III and "ABCs in Zero G" to Analog. Her first novel, Sheepfarmer's Daughter, sold in 1987 and came out in 1988; it won the Compton Crook Award in 1989. Remnant Population was a Hugo nominee in 1997, and The Speed of Dark was a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and won the Nebula in 2004.
Although Sporting Chance was NEARLY as good as Hunting Party (book 1 in the Serrano Legacy), it lost a couple of stars in my opinion due to Herris Serrano thinking that Sirkin was losing her mind - or not doing a good job. That whole storyline just didn't ring true to me, and although the rest of the book was great, and again I had problems putting the book down, I just couldn't see either Herris or Sirkin behaving like they did. Recommended for those who've read book 1 - you really do need to read them in order. The series makes MUCH more sense that way.
This kind of leads off at the end of book #1, which had them wanting to redecorate the ship. Then they notice something about one of Lady Cecelia's family members and that starts all kinds of problems especially for Lady Cecelia but Captain Heris is brought into the problem as an expedient excuse. I just hated to think of how long Lady Cecelia was kept out of the way - the ending kind of made up for it but it was still bothering me at the end of the book. Very good book/very good series.
Second in the Serrano Legacy, and it feels like Elizabeth Moon was getting into her stride. I love the way she writes, quite simple really, but oh so persuasive, her books just keep pulling you back. I didn’t mean to read the next one so soon………but somehow I did. A funny thing happened when I started this one, I was looking at the end of book 1, and I realised I hadn’t read the last chapter, it didn’t really matter, the first book was better without it. On the other hand, the second book needed an introduction, and last chapter of the first book worked very well. The two books were virtually seamless. And of course it was super, in fact I thought it was a little better than the first, no foxhunting here, thank God! Yep number three coming up, but first I need to read some other stuff, I wonder how long I can resist the siren call of Elizabeth Moons books.
I actually liked this a lot better than the first book. It's faster paced and the story stays interesting, it doesn't get bogged down in talk about horses like the first one.
It is a bit daft though and the ending is a bit too neat and happy for me. It's also very classist, demonstrated most when Lady Cecilia travels to the estate where she has her stables to and the locals all fall over themselves to help 'milady' out of a spot of trouble.
A fun and trashy read. It's nothing special but I would read the next one if I came across it.
This is way different than Hunting Party but equally as fun, if not as dire. I honestly can't believe that the whole issue of the prince being stupid in the previous book is one of the plots in this. It's quite ridiculous and raises ethical concerns but also somewhat fascinating to read. One of the bigger plots however, delves into what it's like to be helpless, cut-off and disabled which is portrayed quite well. Rich people can be so dramatic with their problems, though haha and poor Heris again gets stuck in between their power struggles and what not.
Still as many POVs as before and handled just as well. I loved that Brun (previously known as Bubbles) is so prominent in this book and I'm glad that there is at least some exploration of queer relationships especially considering that this was first published in the 90s.
The crew of Lady Cecelia's yacht really starts to come together and has a bigger role in this which I appreciated because they're all so great. My favorite is definitely Sirkin who unfortunately, suffers a lot and is put through the ringer. The only thing that I ended up not liking is the most prominent (and prominent is a very loose term for this series because there's barely any romance) romantic relationship which seems to suffer a lot more than it thrives and can we just not.
Still, it's great to read a series filled with females playing almost all the prominent roles and in Sporting Chance, even the antagonist. I loved all the action, the part where the hot air balloons come in is very entertaining with Ronnie being scared af (he's nothing if not consistent when it comes to that LOL) and the overarching mystery itself kept me hooked till the end. Oh and the space bugs were something. Very much looking forward to getting to know more about the next antagonist that already played a minor role in this book.
This one hundred percent enjoyable novel was a bit of an epiphany for me, having discovered that space-opera is an actual genera these days I have now discovered just how fun they can be.
The blurb describes the plot, but does not covey how much fun the actual reading experience is. There are space ships and space battles, there are wise cracks and one liners, there are strong admirable women and a hell of a lot of fun is had by all.
The writing is clear, competent and well edited, no pretensions of literary genius to come between the reader and the story, but no lack of character building or descriptiveness either.
While a #2 in a series it does not suffer at all for being so, the characters are well developed and although the plot of the previous novel does impact on this one it is perfectly readable as a stand-alone. Having finished it, I went straight online to buy the first one. It is delightful to discover such an excellent new author and series.
3.5 stars - better than Hunting Party, but still a little silly in places (escaping from a hospice center in a hot air balloon?!). A fun read but not the best space opera or mil SF. I had doubts about how Sirkin's storyline was handled and rather disliked the sudden turnaround in Cecelia's condition in the final chapters.
Heris, sadly, is rather boring. Brun is my favorite character, followed by Cecelia. I just think Heris is a blank slate.
Overall, I enjoyed this sci-fi novel; it shows that even though technology may advance, people are still the same. I wish I had read the series in order before; starting with Once a Hero led to all sorts of confusion.
Another excellent book in the series (and a re-read). Heroines and heroes make mistakes, recover (but not without cost), a number of side plots intertwine believably. the characters are well developed and consistent, just an all-around good series.
Perfectly good space opera with strong female protagonists. There was a little deus ex machina going on at the end I wasn't particularly fond of. But it was an enjoyable read.
This starts where we were at the end of the first book, and continues the adventures of Heris, Cecelia and several other characters, but is a completely different story, this time with more military aspects. In many ways, this reminded me of some of Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan novels. Very entertaining, but one star off for the handling by Heris, of the situation with one of her crew members (which was completely out of character). And now I'm onto the third one.
(r/Fantasy 2022 Bingo squares: Set in Space; No Ifs, Ands, or Buts; Family Matters)
On the one hand, this is an utterly engrossing read - hard to put down, with such fun character evolution for the younger set from the first book, and such an interesting arc for Lady Cecilia.
On the other hand, I could have done without the whole “how does a ship Captain find time for sex subplot (even if it is a bit funny) and the betrayal at 75% was telegraphed too clearly to the reader to not be frustrated that the characters weren’t getting it.
So, 4 stars. But immediately starting the next book.
First off - this is a good book and an enjoyable one. While you could read it as a stand-alone, you'd lose a lot of character dimensions, I think, particularly since the main duo (Heris and Cecelia) are split up early on.
Things that this book does better than the first book: * There is more of a "plot" throughout the whole book; it doesn't suddenly show up in the final third. * The scattershot "B-list primary characters" group from the first book is split up, and most demoted to secondary character status. Bubbles (now called Brun) is promoted and has a role throughout the book, instead of brought in at the end.
Elements that this book keeps from the first book that remain great: * Heris continues to grow in her role as a civilian space captain, with that role complicated by a difficult political situation. * Cecelia continues to be a fabulous character, * The worldbuilding and the writing continues to be a joy to read. The details - the cockroaches! - are so much fun.
Places where this book was slightly lacking, in my opinion: * Separating Heris and Cecelia for most of the book took away one of the best joys of the first book. They're amazing together. * The clone subplot was tedious, confusing, and uninteresting. * I didn't understand the antagonist's personal dislike for Cecelia. * Some of Moon's minor characters are two-dimensional and come across as Mary Sues (see Cecelia's genius therapist, for instance) and deus ex machina.
In some ways, this was a better book than the first in the series. The pacing was mostly better. The character relationships, being already established, were better. Although I missed the interactions between Cecelia and Heris, I enjoyed the split story lines, and I thought that Cecelia's story, in particular, was well-done. I was also very interested in the plot involving the prince, although the resolution suffered from the rushed ending. Oh, and Brun has turned into a wonderful character.
On the down side, the ending of this one felt very rushed to me. It felt like it should have been a bit longer because after good pacing throughout the book, suddenly we were rushing around from point A to point B, without a second to breathe in between. Also, Heris does suffer as a character. She's very bland, and I can't pinpoint why. She takes action and thinks, and sometimes she's mischievous, and sometimes she's sarcastic, and yet she just feels bland. There was also some seriously heavy-handed writing at some points. I believe another reviewer described it as being like a pantomime, where the viewer is screaming at the hero to look one way, and the stupid hero looks the other. I'm not good at catching these kinds of things, and yet it was painfully obvious.
This one got a bit complicated and I think the characterizations were a bit rushed, but the story was good and I am excited to see where things go in the next book.

This is the second book in the Serrano Legacy by Elizabeth Moon. In this one Heris Serrano, late of the space navy has been forced to resign her commission. She comes from a long line of naval officers and a naval career is what she desired for her life. It went well for a while but then tragedy struck. Because of the actions of a venal admiral, she found herself disobeying orders. As a result, she faces a choice. She can resign for the good of the service and say nothing or she can stand trial with her entire crew. She chooses to protect her crew and winds up the captain of a rich lady's yacht. It is not a happy decision. In this one Lady Cecilia has what appears to be a stroke but Heris and some of Lady Cecilia's family believe she has been poisoned. She is put into medical care where she lapses into a coma and the doctors say she has very little chance of recovery. The closer family members soon start fighting over her assets and when the will shows that she has left her space yacht to Heris, who is only her captain, the family try to say that Heris has influenced Lady Cecilia unduly and they try to have the will revoked. Meanwhile, Bubbles, a niece of Lady Cecilia, while visiting Lady Cecilia in the hospital discovers that she is aware even though unable to move. Bubbles and Heris soon hatch a plot to rescue Lady Cecilia and get her to proper medical help. Everyone better watch out when she recovers, especially those responsible for her condition! This one has more intrigue and much more action than the first book and is even a better read, even though the first book was a good read also. I plan to read every book in this series before I start on anything else!
Ser #1 > Ser #2 Vatta > deeds of > Serrano Easy read. Not always very logical decisions of characters. Looks like Moon's second series after deeds. Vatta is a bit more focused/evolved but also there loose ends.
Less convincing. Good comment of plot improver, what is the motive of people. In this story this is completely unclear, why does the king want to kill his son/clones or why to protect them, (clear for his oldest, but less for the middle one, unclear for the youngest). Why is the wife of the crown minister helping, long term involved but crown minster seems not aware, easily removed by gang, unlikely if for 20 years you are involved. Heris got support from the fleet, unclear why. Partially might be covered in next book but for standalone not very strong. Escape by balloon is nice but very unlikely combination.

Not as well put-together as Hunting Party. 3 Stars.
Sporting Chance was good, but not great. I am not certain if it is an artifact of 90s sci-fi, but the story seemed to frequently change tracks without warning, making for a somewhat confusing read. The book was fast-paced, which can be exciting; however, it was a little too fast-paced, creating undeveloped areas.
The ending felt very rushed as well, with many loose threads to pick up. If different plot points were given the chance to breathe and develop, and if the ending wrapped up the story, I could see this easily being an excellent duology of its own, instead of an adequate individual book. However, I still am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Have previously read (and really enjoyed) the ‘Vatta’s war series by Moon. The first book in this series was along a similar vein. Maybe not quite so polished as Moons later series but still an enjoyable read. The second book in the Serrano series improves on the first with a interesting story arc that I wasn’t anticipating at the end of book 1. My main gripe with this book (and also book#1) was that Moon essentially sought to wrap up the plot by the end of this book rather than continue it into the next. Because of this the plot wrapped up ridiculously fast and neatly, which was a little disappointing. Am still interested to see how this plot unravels in the next book.
The second book in the Serrano Legacy series picks up right where the last one left off, as the crew of our space yacht and their intrepid captain and badass owner get sucked into a bunch of plots (some related to the smuggling from book one, some political). Really interesting women in this one (I think all the villains are women) and there we even some lesbians (and one maybe bisexual) among the secondary characters. A lot to like. Definitely more on the serious side than the first one, but some great scenes of awesomeness. I stan Brun. A-.
Heris Serrano is back, and so is lady Cecelia, my personal favourite so far in these books. This book starts just as the first book ends, with the yacht going back to the home planet with Mr Smith and his entourage. At the ship they realize that something terrible has happened to Mr Smith who is now as smart as a carrot.
Unfortunately that realization makes them a target for some powerful people and the book gets going.
It's a space adventure from the beginning to end and in many ways a more polished book than the first one.
I’m struck by how different this series is to Vatta’s—different cultures, technologies, and attendant concerns. So yes, this is more classic Moon (high-tension adventure that I didn’t want to put down, plus a variety of women characters who get to be strong in different ways) but it’s far from a rehash. And what Cecelia goes through here is particularly riveting. I’m hopeful that the next books will further explore issues around the rejuvenation and cloning technologies.
The romance element is a weird distraction and I honestly don’t understand why it’s here at all.
3.5 stars - I enjoyed this more than the first in the series. Less time wasting on silly things like the hunting scenes in book 1. There was a lot going on and all the characters POV was interesting as they dealt with a wide variety of problems/enemies/political plots going on. Heris - the main character, remains the most bland/uninteresting. There is little depth to her - other than she is Captain... and well, that seems to be about it.
OK, so Elizabeth Moon is clearly a gifted writer, however, these books are hardly science fiction, are they? Yes, there are spaceships and different planets, but the story would work just as well, with only minor rewrites, with a fantasy setting of, say, blimps and airships, or even just a historical setting of sailing ships. But the characters seem solid and real, and I've grown to like them, so I might finish the Serrano Legacy, but this is not a new favourite writer.
