One of the books that I went into completely unaware of, and was pleasantly surprised to read. It was a glimpse into another lifetime, of simplicity & innocent fun🎈
Here, the author recounts heartwarming anecdotes from his childhood, while growing up in the 80s India. His experiences in the big city of Calcutta vs in that of the small town Nilokheri. He narrates his memories from every field one can think of ! From general lifestyle, family rituals, Shutter-TVs, innovative outdoor games, indoor games, sweets, celebrations, visit to far-off relatives, communication of that time (postcards, telegrams, dialer telephones), movies, Indian comics like Nagaraj, candies, etc. Each accompanied by a comparison with the present. There were relevant, uplifting quotes peppered throughout & in the beginning of each chapter, and supplementary photographs made the reading experience vivid.
I especially loved reading about the schooldays of the author, how similar yet different it is now from that bygone decade.
One of the notable things we can discern from the book is that earlier, people of all ages were more active in their lives because of limited resources, and now, while everything is at our convenience, we still find ourselves surrounded by stress because life has become outcome-oriented and there is a pressure to perform our best everyday, in every field. Hence the book is a great comforting read to step back & reflect.
I was happy to relate to so many things, as my childhood was in a beautiful valley city in the northern border of Odisha, where people of many cultures lived in harmony. It was not until I passed my higher secondary when we had our first smartphone, and I wonder how different the childhood of kids is now.

There is so much about spirituality going on in timelines and feeds on our social media that almost everyone is aware of the concept even if they practice it or not. For a person like me who is regularly following and reading about the stuff, knows new things every day and also getting refreshed with all the previously learnt concepts. Every time, I pick up a spiritual book or a book by a spiritual personality, it is my basic expectation to learn and know something new which can surprise, shock, astonish and mind-boggle me. If nothing of that sort happens, the book is a failure for me which is written not to introduce new concepts to human beings but just for sake of writing a book to accomplish one of the personal goals and yearly resolutions. This book is different and proved its worth in my life. I have found the secret of my happiness.
