Road Trip #1

Racing the Moon

Rate this book
Sonny has a shipment to deliver. Moonshine, the old fashioned way. Too bad some jerk blew up his road in the Carolina mountains, keeping him stuck, high and unfortunately dry. He's just pissed off enough to take his temper out in the guy responsible, and when Sonny happens to come across him, he's not able to control his impulses. MJ is on a mission, ridding the world of another environmental threat, shutting down a logging organization. Running into Sonny in the foggy woods throws a wrench in his plans. He has no intention of dying in a backwoods cabin. But it's when Sonny kidnaps him for an impromptu vacation that things go completely awry. From the beaches of Montego Bay to the coast of Washington and Oregon, Sonny and MJ fight and love, trying to stay one step ahead of someone who carries a real grudge for MJ. Someone who would rather see them dead than alive. With car chases, explosions, and hot, steamy loving, Sonny and MJ have all the adventure they could ever want. But do these two have enough in common to prove they can give the moon a run for its money?

Oh man! Now that was some good ass readin'. Ol' skool B.A. Tortuga. Yeah, sweetness. Loved this story. Like comin' home to a dinner of fried liver and onions smothered in gravy over some rice with cornbread on the side and a tall glass of pop. Hotfuckindamn! *smacks lips* This one has been on my TBR list since 2011. So glad I added it to the Knock Out Challenge. Woo!

Kinda like Kerouac, only with a lot more guns, explosions, and sex. Neither characters nor actions were believable from my point of view. A television producer's overdone fantasy I guess, but really not my kind of thing.

Liked it better the second time I read it than I did the first time

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- The author does a pretty good job of depicting a relationship in which the two guys start by severely disliking each other, then move on to being sexually attracted, and then gradually realize that they want each other around permanently. I felt that the transitions from one phase to the next were well-paced.
- The main characters are both cocky and feisty and assertive. This gives the romance a sweet edge (without being at all saccharine), because realizing that they’re falling in love is so out of the ordinary for both of them.
- Some of the exposition is really funny. At one point Sonny is imagining holding MJ down and doing dirty things to him, and then MJ says something insulting. So “Sonny included a gag in his little fantasy.

CONS:
- I consider myself to be pretty open-minded, and normally cussing doesn’t bother me much. But this book has a LOT of profanity that I found gratuitous. Page 15, for example, has 18 of what I consider cuss words, 9 of which are the F word. The excessive cussing just tended to disrupt my reading a bit.
- I’m a fan of a lot of Sean Michael’s works, so I was pleased to discover the similarities between Tortuga’s and Michael’s narrative style (choppy descriptions, fragments, conversational exposition, etc.). However, the similarity borders on copycatting on occasion. Here’s an example of how similar the writing is at times: one of my favorite little phrases in Between Friends: Sammy’s Place, which I’ve read 3 or 4 times, is this: “See him. See him not freak out (when Sammy’s ex shows up at the grocery store where he works). That phrase appears only slightly altered in this book--“See him. See him be domestic (when MJ is cooking breakfast at one point).

Overall comments: I first read this book over a year ago and wasn’t very impressed at all. After a second read, though, I liked it more. It’s not terribly sweet--there’s not a lot of romance in it--and like I said, I found the cussing to be a bit much both times I read it. But the plot is unusual and the characters seem real, so overall, I think it’s worth a read.

Racing the Moon is a great introduction to two semi-psychotic alpha guys going at one another for top dog position. It features completely unapologetic kidnappings, boat trips, laziness, mixed with action, straight up craziness, eco-terrorism, moonshiners, wiliness, tattoos, and moments of tenderness. In short, Racing the Moon has it all, and easily rates as one of my favorite books. Luckily for me, it's also the first of four books in the Road Trip series, so I get three more installments of these boys.

This is clearly a BA Tortuga book: narrative and characters that sound real and true to their personalities, hot and oft-repeated sex, and two guys who stand their grounds but still respect each other despite the mutual want-to-kill-him.

I love Sonny and MJ. They're just the right blend of complementary snark and insanity to be perfect for each other. They start out with biting nicknames for the other, Sonny is “Sunshine and MJ is “Precious, but end up as endearments.

Plus, any book that has this, “Man, you go someplace to relax bring the corpse-like body of the guy you bonded with over an exploding cabin and damned fine chase scene, and all you got was shit in return, is bound to be a winner.

Editing errors can absolutely ruin the rhythm of a book for me, but there are none that obviously stand out to me. The characters do use a few made up words (i.e., hurty and nappage), but it’s fitting with their voices. The sentences that seem to be missing words should be read as one would talk in casual conversation, and lends to the overall laid-back tone.

The point of view slips between the two men often, and without warning, but their individual voices are so distinct it's somehow a seamless transition. Frankly, I didn't even notice until a second read-through.

If you're looking for a book where the law-breaking characters learn their lessons and change their ways, you’re not going to find it here. But if you want to read about two guys who have a damn good time, this is a great place to start. I distinctly remember laughing out loud the first time I read this book, and it hasn't gotten old for me yet, some 8 years later.

The writing was a little choppy. This is the author’s style but some of the word choices just aren’t that great. The plot was fun and adventure filled. As far as the characters go, I have a hard time believing these two would fall for each other that quickly and after insisting neither of them would bottom and never have they cave to each other awful fast! I do like the characters and the slight grittiness of the story. My trouble came with it being a bit of a wish-washy attempt at it. It seemed like the author wanted the best of both worlds, a cutesy romance and a grittier novel. Neither of which could be accomplished. Still it was entertaining and fun to read.

A very hot tale of what can happen when a gay eco-terrorist and a modern day gay moonshiner meet.

this was an interesting and very erotic read, though I did find it was a little hard to follow the action at times, it was hard to identify which of the main characters was doing what to whom. I appreciated what they were doing to each other, don't get me wrong, it was just difficult to keep it clear in my mind who was doing what to whom.

I did not expect the ex to figure so prominently in the story line as he did because we here so little about him and his relationship to Sonny to expect that he would take such drastic measures against MJ.

I saw this book up for free and liked the blurb. It was a pretty good read.

M.J. is an environmental terrorist explosives expert who does jobs for whatever organization pays him. He has been hired to blow up a logging business way back up in the Appalachian woods. He sets the charges and hies it back down hill to get back to his car. Unfortunately, he runs into a big suspicious redneck with a gun who kidnaps him to make sure that he won't give away or mess up the man's own nefarious business going on in these back woods.

Sonny is a ridgerunner and has just finished up the last batch of his shine. He is all set to close shop and make his run when he finds a 'hiker' near his cabin. Sonny can't make his run until dark and he doesn't want to take the chance that the suspicious hiker will rat him out. His prisoner is not docile about captivity and the two men engage in a lot of rough and tumble.

They finally come to an understanding when the logging camp guys come after MJ. Sonny gets them out a secret way and through the woods with the men hunting them all the way. As they near MJ's hidden car (which is a sweet 'Stang btw), Sonny goes down and tears the muscles in his ankle. MJ gets him to the car and they escape to MJ's rental. They are still a bit hostile, but accepting that they were even in this situation. MJ makes plans to go on an extended vacation after he receives his money transfer and Sonny makes plans to lie low while his partner gets them set up in a new place. Both men are taking peeks and trying to deny the sexual tension. Sonny decides to act on it.

MJ wakes up from a drugged sleep (Sonny drugged him because he is terrified of enclosed spaces and flying) in Jamaica with Sonny in a nice beach shack by the sea. At first there is some rancor, but then MJ decides to go with it. The two men give in to their lust and it becomes a testosterone marathon on the beach. At the end of their vacay, both men realize that things are more serious between them than they realize. They agree to meet up in six weeks after MJ's next job.

Sonny goes home to his ridge-running partner and former lover to make the transition for leaving the business behind so he can start something new with MJ. Unfortunately, Woody didn't get the memo. In Sonny's absence, Woody decides that he wants back together with Sonny. He is hurt when Sonny gently tells him that it is serious between him and MJ. After six weeks come and go, Sonny is worried about MJ and is slightly hurt thinking that MJ has changed his mind. He wants them together so decides to go looking for him even if it means kidnapping MJ a second time. MJ did not desert Sonny, but got captured by thugs hired by the owners of the whaling ship he blew up on an earlier job. He is beat up and locked away in a closet when Sonny comes to his rescue.

The two men escape on a long road trip to get back across country trying to avoid pursuit, local cops, find out who set MJ up, heal, and relieve the passion between them. It's all pretty exciting stuff. The biggest reveal for me (I already worked out who set up MJ) and which ate me up with curiosity for most of the book was what 'MJ' and 'Sonny's birth names were.

The plot is good and exciting with what these two guys do for livings. The guys getting together and their interactions were pretty good. They were so funny when they were snarky at each other. I want to give them some kind of award for their level of endurance in the bedroom (and well whatever space they chose to occupy).

Lots of bad language and sex- so be warned. (-;

I loved this book! I've been reading a lot of m/m romances in which the characters are just too nice and too sweet to be true. Don't get me wrong--I loved most of those sweet romances. However, it was good to find two characters who some people might not classify as "good," but who still create a wonderful relationship. Sonny is a moonshiner. MJ is an eco-terrorist. Each of them walk outside the law, guided by their own warped moral compasses. The chemistry between the two is intense. They're either fighting (literally, fists and all) or fucking. Their banter in between is often hilarious, and I came to adore them because of (and partially despite of) their volatile personalities.

I also enjoyed the setting in this first book of the series. I'm a NC girl and am very familiar with Asheville and the surrounding areas.

If you like stories with lots of action, both in the bedroom and outside, then I'd suggest trying this one.

For your viewing pleasure, I'll provide a link to by Matt Stillwell. I've actually met the old moonshiner in the video. He's world famous!

If you'd like to see a hilarious interview with another world famous moonshiner, check out here.

Racing the Moon by B.A. Tortuga

A good book. This was a story about two men who were one of the funniest pairings I’ve ever read about. First there is MJ ‘Precious who likes to blow things up and Sonny ‘Sunshine who runs a moonshine business. Yep Sonny likes to call MJ ‘Precious and MJ likes to call Sonny ‘Sunshine. Least you think these men are prissy nope. They fight each other just as much as they come to depend on each other.

²Ñ´³â€“I don’t bottom, asshole. That’s your job.â€

³§´Ç²Ô²Ô²ââ€“Nope. The last guy who tried to get me to ate his teeth. I top, Precious. Period.â€

Lot’s of funnies in this story and I mean lots These two have the quirkiest sense of humor that kept me laughing throughout the book. The food comments alone were hilarious. The scene about funny looking bananas and chocolate was comical and then sexy.

“Well, they’re not really bananas. They’re green.

“Don’t be holding out on me, Precious. What did you eat that you’re not sharing? Chocolate. Mmm.

My only complaint was the truncated sentences especially toward the end. It got a bit confusing on who was saying what. I would have like complete sentences and clear definition of who was talking. The dialog between MJ and Sonny just melded at times. Overall though an entertaining story and a goodread!

In lieu of writing reviews I’m taking an extended break I decided to leave this list showing some of the reasons for the stars I’ve given to the stories I’ve read.

5 Stars Given to stories that had me falling in love with the characters or stories where I hated the characters but the author had me hooked. For stories that had me so engaged in the plot I couldn’t put the book down and stories that either made me cry buckets and/or laugh until I cried. In short. these ones rocked my world!!!
4 Stars Given to stories that I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed reading but had me wishing for just a bit more.
3 Stars Given to stories that I thought were worth the read but they didn’t knock my socks off.
2 Stars Given to stories that didn’t work for me. I couldn’t connect to the MCs or feel any sort of connection between them. I couldn’t follow the plot or there wasn’t a plot. Every so often one of these stories just needs work to fix what went wrong but mostly 2 star reads are stories that leave me wondering why I kept reading until the end.
1 Star - I RARELY give out 1 Star so when I do it means the story was a complete train wreck.

I know what I may love another reader may wonder what the hell I was thinking and vise versa but I’m okay with that!

What does kismet have to do with romance?
There is always a bit of random chance that mixes with romance because otherwise everyone would end up married to their best friend. Perhaps not the worse thing to happen to a person, but sometimes we need a little bit of 'stranger' to fall in love with someone because people we grow up with tend to become like family, such as brothers or sisters.
The dialogue in this story is really funny and the chemistry is felt through the tight banter that flows between the 'sunshine' sonny and 'precious' MJ. This is a first time lovers in some ways because they both have their first times as 'bottoms'. There is a lot of action in between the M/M sexy scenes. This is not my favorite M/M romance but it wasn't the worse. I'm not much of a 'action' genre reader.

4.5 stars.

I loved this book. It wasn't perfect by a long shot; it would have benefited from more dialogue tags (several times I had to reread because I wasn't certain which character I was with--not that rereading was a hardship, the dialogue was snappy), and there was a lot more sex than I like in my books. But what can I say, it was a romp, full of action and the MC's, well, apart from obviously being indestructable, were well matched, tough and funny. I fell in love with them, and their journey toward a relationship, a long time before they realised they were falling in love with each other.

Oh, and I worked out who the bad guy was pretty early on but, hey ho, it meant I wasn't worrying too much about that and I could concentrate on Sonny and MJ, while they concentrated on each other!

It's not often that i out & out laugh while reading a book, but this one pulled it from me-- to the point that by chapter 5 my husband was shooting me looks of extreme concern.

MJ & Sonny are great characters: funny, snarly, dry witted and hot as hell. Their early power struggle is hysterical and by the time they figure it out i was crazy about them.

The action afforded by their work (and work-related persons) is fast-paced, makee sense and adds great tangles for the two to unknot.

This book is a great departure from a lot of m/m romance where the two main characters seem to just look at each other and immediately fall in love.

Nope, these guys are just straight fun to read about.

This book totally took me by surprise. I loved the chemistry between MJ and Sonny, it's what holds the story together, and what pulls the story along. MJ and Sonny are two of the most unusual gay characters I've come across in a long time. They don't fit any molds or stereotypes; gay or straight. They are unique and very "Sonny and MJ." None like them.

Racing the Moon is definitely a character driven story. There are places where the plot is weak or thin, and normally this would drive me up a frigging wall, but because of MJ and Sonny's charisma I was more than willing to overlook it.

Racing the Moon is a very nice surprise and I gladly give it four stars.

Between a 3.5 and 4, but I did enjoy it a lot, so gone for a 4. A story of two tough men, who are on the wrong side of the law. I could imagine them being real tough to look at too, rather than the 'perfect' hero. The pace of the book was fast and frantic, which matched the situations MJ and Sonny found themselves in. I loved the comradeship part of the story, having each others back and not leaving a man behind. Not sure an idle life would suit them though.
I was expecting a more grittier, more violent take on life so their sparring and loving was great. Not a heavy read, and whilst sometimes I had to go back and work out who was talking, it was enjoyable.

I'm not certain how long this book was sitting in my Nook waiting for me to notice it, but I'm so glad I finally did. The two male main characters, MJ and Sonny, captivated me from page one. They were both hard-asses, smart-asses, and apparently exactly what the other needed in his life. I'll admit within the first few pages I couldn't imagine them being able to stand each other for long. Their relationship intrigued me. They're both complex characters that might have done well with a little more fleshing out, but what we got still worked for the story. I fell in love with both of them. And the sex scenes...good God!

3 1/2 STARS I Really Liked It
The first M/M erotica short story I've read in a while that not only delivers hot intimate scenes the reader comes to expect, but this good author also has a plot that I want to read with plenty of high stakes danger & exciting action. My one & only negative thing I can say is at times it was confusing/difficult to understand who was speaking at times. I chalked this up to her writing style that will not keep you away from reading more in this series.

I didn't like this story. Fighting, and not the sexy kind. Kidnapping a stranger because you wanna get in their pants and you think they need a vacation. It just didn't keep my attention. Quite a bit of skimming was done. Not recommended~

Read the first 30% of this or so and then the last 10%. Enough to know that I could not identify with the characters at all and didn't care for the tone the author adopted in telling their story. I've liked other B.A. Tortuga books, so this is a disappointment.

If this book was a drinking game involving the word "fuck", I'd be dead before the second page.

Shallow characters, slim plot and plenty of explosive nonsense. The dialogue is awful.

If this is what m/m readers like, ouch.
