Rate this book
A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.

After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.

In book 3 of the series, the remodel continues as Abby and Georgia start to make plans for a grand opening celebration. A specialist is brought in to refurbish the century old fireplace mantel and makes a startling discovery. Meanwhile Lonnie is looking to adopt, Colt has a new mystery to solve, and Velma comes face to face with a blast from her past.

Join Abby, Georgia, Rufus, and Ramos, as they continue with the remodel on the old mansion, prepare for a busy summer season, and continue to find a new meaning for their lives in the charming small town of Holiday Bay.

Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home.
Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

The third story in this series was a nice surprise. Surprise seems to be the name of the game here. I have expected little less than what Daley dished out in two successive books. No more though. I expect the next book to be nothing than perfection. If I'll then be disappointed, I'll console myself with the fact that my attention span is getting so short that it will soon be shorter than the wavelengths of light. Nothing like physics humour to lighten up the mood.

Not everything is spelled out in this book. There was indeed the Palmer case where events are not confirmed. I'm beginning to get used to some obvious stuff being mentioned but not less material stuff. That is not the reason for not giving the book less than a perfect 5 stars though. It is just that some premises have their limitations, however well executed the book is.

There was a lot to appreciate in this book. The author is taking her time to fluff out her romantic intrigues, but that is the de facto style of cosy authors. What is less stylish though, is the detail in the plotting. E.g. when Green is being observed and gauged by Abby Sullivan, the main character. Many of the intrigue in the book fit, some not yet. There is a mixture of plausible and irregular events in the past that make this book uncharacteristically come alive.

The feeling of reading this book is that of gentle breathing, that of a kitten being used to kindness, in the silence of plants growing up not knowing where they are except that the sun better be near. The book is elegant in its romantic pairing. It is the opposite of paranormal romance, which I have come to like less and less. The thing is, I had considered myself done with the cosy mystery genre too.

But this book is better than its charming, humble, and somber place in the landscape of books. This book reminds me of the metal band The Galactic Cowboys. They were great live, and had only less than 10, 000 units per album shipped during their career, but they had and shared fun. This book would make the envy of many established and more well-known authors than Kathi Daley. I am amazed at how Daley is surviving in the cutthroat world of authors. She is not doing something trailblazing. She is not even taking ads in the papers or on forum websites. She just puts out her books, at most having a preview at the end. But I am glad that she has fans. I am glad that I am one of them.

Contrary to previous reviews, this one is without spoilers. I can talk about this series for ages, but to sum it up without getting too lyrical, I'd say that in this series I find the germination of talent. There is something brilliant about low profile authors, and I find that Daley to be in the same mould as my complete favourites in the past. This is indeed a blast from the past. I have always had the main character of a cosy decide whether I like the pages they adorn. There is something about young and cosmopolitan and pond hopping snap backers. Their sass seems like bratty posturing. Maybe my age is showing. But I have been unchanged since my late teens, when I would be disturbed by too glamorous books, and would take refuge in informal and plebian offerings.

It is a small miracle that the constant talk of food hasn't whetted my appetite yet. Just like the romance of star-crossed magnitudes is bound to happen, but is only hinted at, so is the placement of food is done without hinting at the sanguine and carnal nature of the rich nosh on display. The imagination doesn't catch fire on the intrigues too. The plot takes its own time to unfold and the author makes the pacing of the book independent from the unfolding of the plot. Everything is in neat balance.

While I like glitzy colours in life, having grown up a teen in the 90s, I like the muted aspect of this series. There are booktubers out there who can take note of this. The main character is never shown to have smiled, or laughed, or been self-aware. Yet this toned down treatment is welcome from anything that has a pulse on social media. This book is like a meditation session for its readers. It is also a lesson for anyone who wants to write. I wonder what is keeping me here and not bury my nose (and eyes) in book 4 here and now? I think I might ration this rare delicacy, sweet and tart together as it is. I will try for a couple of books before going back to this world of life, hopes, and the past.

Once again Kathi Daley has hit it out of the park with her third book of The Inn at Holiday Bay series. I hadn't read the previous two books in the series but found I could follow the storyline in this book. As always Kathi has included pets and a strong woman character. Abby Sullivan, the main character, has moved her life from California to Holiday Bay, Maine where she has purchase a grand house full of history with intentions of opening a Bed and Breakfast with her friend, Georgia Carter. Her move is an attempt to leave the tragedy that claimed her life and start anew. We are able to see Abby rebuilding her life with assistance from others, treated to history behind the grand house and also a little romance. This series has now topped my list of favorites by Kathi Daley.

Hooked on this series!

I am absolutely hooked on this series. I have tried to take a break in between each book, but as soon as I start reading another series, my mind wanders to Abby, Georgia, Velma, Colt and all the other wonderful characters in this series.
I love that each book is about something found in Abby's beautiful home. I'm also on the edge of my seat, wondering why someone is after a file that her husband may have had.
I know Colt will never let anyone hurt Abby, but I'm getting really anxious for her.
When is her sister going to write back, every time Abby opens her email, I find myself praying for an email from Annie.
Kathi Daley is an exceptional author who knows how to grab the reader and keep them reading until they can't keep their eyes open.
I am going to read the next book right now!

I was nearly tempted to give this one a 3 1/2 due to a couple of reasons, but went ahead with the 4* as it was an entertaining addition to the series. I love hidden compartments in pieces of furniture and such, and that aspect of the story was what held my interest the most over the other mysteries.

As an aside, oddly enough I just finished another book featuring hidden compartments. What are the chances?

In this next book of the series, the remodeling is going well and it looks like things are on track. Abby soon learns that the mantel that she is having work done has a few secrets to share. She along with her roommate Georgia can't wait to dive into some research on the very old mantel. Meanwhile Colt is looking into the death of an older gentleman who seemingly passed from natural causes. He wants to buy his house and asks Abby if she will take a look and tell him what she thinks. While there she brings up questions about the mans death that has Colt looking deeper into things. With mysteries turning up left and right research is on the menu for everyone. Will they be able to find the answers they seek or will some mysteries remain just that, a mystery. Along the way Abby decides it's time to bring all her things to her new home and close up that chapter in her life. Follow along she searches for answers, says goodbye to her previous life, and moves forward to a brighter future. This is such a great read and so much more than just a mystery. I can't wait to see what will happen next for Abby and what new mysteries will come her way.

Review:

As is usual with this author, this book is very heartwarming and character driven. She always tells a feel-good story and you cannot help but feel happy when you are done reading. Second chances, new love interests and adorable animals abound in this series, and this book is no different.

The characters are well rounded and well developed and I am enjoying getting to spend more time with them, seeing how their relations are growing and moving forward. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.

The author is very talented in creating mysteries that have several layers to them and intertwines them perfectly, which is evident in this book. The reader has more than a few things to figure out, which is a great thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you like history, this book is right up your alley.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I do the whole series so far.
Abby is having a mantel restored in the home that she is remodeling into a bed and breakfast when a secret compartment is found. Add a home that seems to have the owner passing away under ordinary circumstances that turns up more information that is expected. This book keeps you turning the pages.
I love how Ms. Daley ties in a mystery from the past along with a current day murder, it keeps things moving. I also love all her characters they are unique and likable. It is easy to get drawn into their lives.
I will continue on with this series.

Message in the Mantel is book three in The Inn at Holiday Bay series. I really enjoy this series. It seems that each one gets better and better. The story flows smoothly and the characters are well developed. Abby and Georgia are still getting the remodeling done on the Inn. There is murder and several mysteries that needs to be solved. It seems that Abby has her hands full. This is one of those page turners and I did not want to put it down. The author keeps you guessing till the end.

Kathi Daley has really outdone herself with this latest book in The Inn at Holiday Bay series. It looks like there may be a bit of possible romance in the future as well if things keep going the way they are with the handsome cop, Colt.
I loved the antiquing in this book, and am thoroughly enjoying all of the interesting things that have been coming to light in the amazing house Abby has purchased to transform into a B&B.
Each book in this enchanting series bring me joy and I am already eagerly awaiting the next one.

This book was another sweet cozy afternoon read. More than one mystery to intrigue readers and the characters are developing naturally as the reader becomes more involved with them in each book. I enjoy this type of mystery because the amateur sleuth, Abby, works closely with the police chief every step of the way.

Awkward.

I have read most of Kathi Daley's books, and enjoyed most of them. This was a serious disappointment. The "message" in the mantel has nothing to do with the story. The mystery the book revolves around is uninteresting. Ms. Daley and her editor have, again, forgotten what an apostrophe is, making all conversations awkward.
A very disappointing read. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Message in the Mantel is the third book in Kathi Daley’s awesome The Inn at Holiday Bay series. The writing style flows smoothly, and the book is a clean and easy read. The storyline is well-plotted and complex, with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and guessing. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are affable, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.

Abby Sullivan’s life changed forever because a distracted driver swerved into oncoming traffic, and her husband and their infant son didn’t survive the resulting accident. After receiving an e-mail advertising a huge old house for sale in Holiday Bay, Maine, Abby purchased it without even seeing it in person, packed up her belongings, and left San Francisco. Starting over isn’t easy, but Abby, a published author, is writing again, settling in and making friends, and plans to open an inn once major renovations are completed. Georgia Carter, who’s also recovering from traumatic events in her life, is a genius in the kitchen, she and her dog, Ramos, are living with Abby and Rufus, the large orange cat who adopted her, in a cottage located on the property, and Georgia will be managing the inn once it’s open. Abby’s contractor, Lonnie Parker, is making great progress on the renovations and he hires Bobby Martin to restore the intricately carved mantel above the fireplace in the living room of the main house. Bobby tells Abby he believes Samuel Garrison carved the mantel approximately a hundred and fifty years before her house was built in 1895. Mr. Garrison always included a secret drawer or compartment in his designs, and Abby is quite surprised when she hears what Bobby found in her mantel. While investigating the suspicious death of Bruce Palmer, Abby’s friend, Chief of Police Colt Wilder, discovers a human skeleton in a trunk in Bruce’s attic. The case turns into a complex mystery, and Abby brainstorms with Colt regarding his investigation.

"Message in the Mantle" earns 5/5 Secrets Galore...Engaging Fun!

Real experts are a necessity when completing renovations of a vintage home, so Lonny hires just such an expert to refurbish the living room's mantle. When he arrives he explains the mantle may be one carved by Samuel Garrison, an eighteenth-century craftsman. Seeking providence for this mantle, Georgia finds the artist always added a secret compartment to his work...surprise! Life beyond the mantel mystery continues with antique hunting, talking to experts, and enjoying family and friends. Colt may have found the perfect house to buy, but the catch? It is the scene of a suspicious death. Abby receives emails from her husband's former colleague oddly determined to find a specific police file her husband may have, but the catch? Internal Affairs is involved. So...Mystery. Mayhem. Murder.

This third book in is loaded with mysteries keeping readers turning the page. The primary mystery of the "message" in the mantle reveals an intriguing centuries-old puzzle that ends with a delightful surprise. The other two mysteries, a suspicious death and issues in Abby's late husband's police investigations, have somewhat of a conclusion, but no "gotcha" excitement. Using a first-person narrative from Abby's perspective sharing her inner thoughts, the scenarios and theories are discussed and tweaked to match the facts discovered, but often some of the information is found "off camera" or indirectly. Relationships continue to grow and Abby is finding her place in the community and close friendships the perfect remedy for a shattered heart. Newbies can join us fans with book three, but I suggest starting at the beginning since so much has been built on through the series. Enjoyable series!

Holiday Bay, Maine. Present day. Kathi Daley’s Message in the Mantel (The Inn at Holiday Bay #3) is a very active installment to this series that made me miss Maine a great deal. Abby Sullivan thought that her life was over after the heartbreaking deaths of her husband and son. She buys his huge mansion in Holiday Bay, Maine - site unseen. She had to leave San Francisco and, hopefully, the sadness behind so Abby bought this beautifully built mansion in Maine. In Message in the Mantel, Abby discovers thanks to Lonnie who is turning her mansion into an inn that the mantel that is above an old-fashioned fireplace is a special hand-crafted one that may hold a surprise or two within it. Georgia, Abby’s roommate who is also starting over after a tragedy, happens to be a caterer who produces excellent eats. The two women are planning a special ‘soft opening by having a dinner to introduce everyone to the new inn. Then Colt, the police chief of Holiday Bay tells Abby about a death.
Being a writer Abby asks Colt the important questions which directs Colt to discover the death is actually a murder, but who and why would someone wish to kill an elderly man who lives alone? Abby decides to break her ties with San Francisco and flies to her storage unit to bring all her things to Maine. When she and Georgia arrive at the storage unit and open the door, Abby sees her unit has been ransacked. But why? Murder, restoring the inn, local history, and the B & E of Abby’s unit in San Francisco add up to much excitement and adventure in this book. So much goings on I had to begin reading the next book - Answers in the Attic. Very enjoyable. 4.5 stars.

INTRIGUING MYSTERY, BUT STILL NO OPEN INN. I'VE HEARD IT OPENS IN THE NEXT ONE THOUGH.

SERIES PREMISE: In this series we follow Abby Sullivan (a mystery author) and her employee (and friend) Georgia. Abby purchased a mansion in Holiday Bay, Maine and plans to convert it into an Inn. Also included are the cat that adopted Abby, Rufus and Georgia's dog Ramos.
IN THIS BOOK: Abby is still working hard to get the Inn renovated for opening. Colt is moving into a new place and finds a skeleton inside a chest in the basement. So Abby uses her sleuthing skills to help him work out what happened.

THOUGHTS: First thought is the annoyance that the Inn still isn't open. But I planned for this and will be reading Answers in the Attic next and the Inn should be open in that one. The mystery I did find to be intriguing although the reveal felt way to forced and short. Owing to all of the above I docked 2 stars.

3 Stars

Mixed bag, I just don't know what to expect next!

Now I am going to include spoilers because I have really found this one just.. well, frankly.. odd.. it seems to skip about and I had to go back and forth making sure I hadn't missed something!

So here's a SPOILER ALERT

Ok so some of the random plot holes from the previous book are brushed over at the start bit like an after thought. However, the laptop contents are still not mentioned and when the detective from Ben's old precinct asks again for files and despite replying immediately to one of Abby's emails he then makes no contact. There's still the supposed background story that Internal Affairs are investigating Ben and three colleagues of his but it's not a consistent enough storyline to make sense.

Colt is dealing with a dead body of an elderly man who appears to have died of natural causes and Abby with no great reason produces a theory that he's been poisoned.. low and behold Colt arranges an autopsy report and she's right!

Colt is now relying on Abby to guess what might have happened out of thin air and seems to be focused on guesswork rather than following evidence.. would he really be relying on an author over detective work?

When they search for a missing trunk within the property, which has been left to one of two untraceable beneficiaries, a skeleton is discovered within which has the pair of them making even wilder guesses. Colt appears more interested in buying the house than solving the crime. It became more comedy than cosy mystery when Abby guesses that the contents of the safety deposit box will contain a map leading to the remains of the other untraceable beneficiary and this turns out to be correct.. I laughed out loud and woke up my son.. and why did the house stink of fresh cigar smoke, fair amount of emphasis on this, when the smoker was away for that time period?

Needless to say Abby states the obvious solution to the very mixed up case because Colt has suddenly and unexpectedly become a little bit dim.

Meanwhile, the house restoration goes on and the mantelpiece is discovered to be older than the house and have a secret compartment. Abby, Georgia and Velma head off to Nantucket for a few days to talk to an expert about it. Velma has a random meet up with an old flame that seems dodgy but heads nowher, has littl context to the current storyline and so will no doubt pop up again in the next book to be swept away or actually turn into something vitally important.

A sapphire necklace, valued at six figures, is discovered in the secret compartment with an undated note that could date back to the 1700's. As Abby now seems to have a bottomless pit of money she's looking to donate it and everyone just takes the discovery as relatively inconsequential.

I'm confused trying to follow storylines that go nowhere and more gaps or plot holes popping up here and there.

Too much information about Abby's very dull decorating schemes.. we've heard far too much about granite countertops, grey and green paint, and blue dishes. Lack of any other adverbs to describe these schemes.. for example, a soft, shimmering pale grey, a delicate leafy green.. makes them feel dull and unappealing.. research some paint colour names if you can't think of anything yourself!!

Ho hum. Three books in and her Inn still isn't finished? I'm getting bored now. I will read the next one in the series but if the Inn isn't open by that one, I'm done. Yes, I get it, it's an old house and you want to do it right--and with deep pockets with no end, I guess there's no hurry. Yes, I'm being sarcastic. Our author wants us to overlook the fact that these types of renovations are enormously expensive, as is going antiquing to furnish the place. Also the fact that she seems to have the dream team of contractors and historical renovators that can do anything...or "know somebody" and they're all perfect, the work is not slipshod, she seems to be getting "mate's rates", and they all have jolly barbecues together. Yeah, it sounds as if I don't like the series, but I do. I just wish it were a little more realistic, a little more "real world". This one was the least favorite of the ones I've read so far. Like the mantle that is discovered and restored, there are mysteries within mysteries in this book and I really don't think any of them were adequately solved at the end. We seemed to rush to the end and I feel like all the threads of the various mysteries were tied together as well as a 5-year old's shoes! I still don't believe the explanation of the necklace and the note found in the secret drawer in the mantle. No, it's not a spoiler. For one thing, no one even takes the note to someone who could test the paper and the ink to see when it was written. There's just a lot of "this might be..." "it could be..." that leaves me very unsatisfied. Also, what seemed to be the most important mystery--the Internal Affairs investigation of her late husband--is just dropped. Prediction: I think her sister has something to do with it. Like I said, I'll give the next one a chance and see if these things aren't cleared up and she better be open and having guests in her Inn!

Although the mystery in this book was quite intriguing and unusual, I felt that the book was rushed into print. I am a huge fan of Kathi Daley's, so I was disappointed to find this book so stilted in the writing style. It didn't flow, needed more conjunctions for smoother reading. Portions of the book felt like a laundry list or outline. And the mystery's solution was flat and anticlimactic. It was as if the book had been outlined, then fleshed out, but never polished and edited.

I continue to enjoy this series. While the author does finish the main mystery there are always other story lines going on that don't get wrapped up. That is a little annoying, but I continue to enjoy the characters, animals and setting.

Message in the Mantel is the third book in the exciting new The Inn at Holiday Bay cozy mystery series. This book is filled with elements of a cozy mystery including suspense, romance, humor, love, friends and family, and a sense of community. The story takes place in the charming tourist town of Holiday Bay, Maine.

The main character is Abby Sullivan, a writer from San Francisco who, after suffering a devastating personal tragedy, sold her condo, packed up all her belongings, bought a huge old house she had never seen in a town she had never been to, and moved to Holiday Bay. She works with her new friends, including the local police chief, Colt Wilder, to uncover the answers to the many questions they encounter in three or four different mysterious circumstances. As renovations in the old mansion Abby is having restored are progressing, a message and a necklace are found in a fireplace mantel, which seem to have historical significance. The mysterious death of a local resident also keep Abby and Colt busy.

There is a theme of second chances in this series and in all of Mrs. Daley’s stories. I love the way she writes in a continuing saga fashion with hints and clues to stories in the future (and red herrings). I love that not all questions are resolved in each book. I enjoy the character development. As always, this author’s writing flows smoothly, and her setting and relatable characters make for an extremely enjoyable and quick read. I really look forward to reading the next book in this series.

What I like about the series is there’s more than one mystery. This time we are trying to find out if abby’s husband Ben was involved with something basically illegal when he was alive with his fellow cops of course Abby knows her husband would not do anything wrong I was a cop but she has no clue what is going on and a fellow officer does contact her to see if she has any of his files of course she said no and also decides to pack up the rest of her stuff at San Francisco There she discovers someone went through her storage unit but cannot see what is missing thankfully all the files are at her current home which I have a feeling that’s what they wanted. Now like I said there’s always more than one mystery her and Colt Also come along an old man who has died it turned out to be a murder. No I have to say I had many people in line to who could’ve killed this man and I felt like it kind a wrapped up pretty fast like there could’ve been many ways that plot could’ve went and I guess I just wasn’t too happy with that ending but I am glad that Colt did get a house so I’m interested to see if we get to know his nephew and niece

Remodeling the old mansion Abby Sullivan plans to turn into a bed and breakfast is coming along at a good pace. She and her partner, Georgia, are busy shopping for furniture, dishes and artwork at antique markets. Abby is still getting messages from her late husband Ben's fellow police officer regarding a case that Ben had been working on at the time of his fatal accident. Abby knows nothing about it. But when she goes to San Francisco to empty out the storage unit she hastily rented before moving to Maine she is shocked to discover that it had been broken into. Someone was obviously looking for something. Sofa cushions were slashed, boxes were opened and contents strewn all over. Good but the real mystery is still unsolved

A wonderful read but the murder of the old resident is almost secondary to the main storyline. Whilst the real mystery of why the files are being sought is left up in the air. Frustrating. Okay I did love all the byplay between the characters and getting to know them better but shouldn't she use the energy she has for the Inn to clear her dead husband's name?
A mantle in the Inn is causing excitement. Not only is it from an earlier date then the Inn but it also has a secret drawer. Meanwhile Cozy is looking into the death of an elderly resident. The death had at first been ruled natural but results have come back saying it was murder. While a fellow colleague of her dead husband is seeking some files. A skeleton in the trunk, a knife in a safety deposit box, a trashed storage unit, a buried skeleton, a secret drawer, a valuable necklace and still no word from her estranged sister. Will they find out any answers?

Book three in this series, "Message in the Mantel" finds Abby Sullivan nearing the end of restoring the historical mansion she bought making it into an inn. Having suffered the loss of her husband and young son in California, Abby's in Maine starting over. She was adopted by a large Maine Coon cat named Rufus. And she has a new partner in Georgia who came with her giant dog, Ramos. They're making plans for the opening of the inn. Abby had a specialist come in to restore the fireplace mantel when it's discovered that this mantel is a historical piece in itself complete with a secret drawer where a note and a sapphire necklace was found. Colt has a new mystery to solve as an elderly man was found dead of a seemingly natural cause until Colt looks into a bit more upon the advice of Abby who is helping with the mystery.

The story was great and we get to know the characters a bit more. Kathi draws you into her world and you want to stay there. I read this book in one sitting and really enjoyed it. I highly recommend the series.
