What’s worse than being the smiling, obedient daughter of the greatest war general in Atlantis?
Being the only female chosen to attend an all male academy.
As one of the most prestigious schools on the island, Triton’s Academy caters to the big, the brawny, and the worthy. Only the most elite mermen are chosen to become warriors, protectors of Atlantis.
And I, Calliope Solandis, can’t figure out why the oracle chose me.
Nothing at the academy is like I imagined; it’s worse. But to fulfill a lifelong dream, I’ll face the brutal truth of a warrior’s training and test my body and mind in ways I never knew were possible. Neither the pain, the bullies, or even four annoyingly handsome mermen will dissuade me from making my father proud.
Because I will prove to everyone at this misogynistic school just how powerful a mermaid can truly be.

I read this because someone posted an excerpt with hilarious dialogue from Maksim. But, banter actually was scarce in this book and I wish the blurb / sypnosis had mentioned bullying.
By the point this book ends, Calliope has had sex with one of the guys, with three others are panting after her. But one of those three is a professor, so he's trying to stay away from her. The other two are brothers, one seems to have been friend-zoned (and has self-esteem issues too, because his family has always compared him unfavourably to his "perfect" brother), while his brother got into Calliope's bad books for awhile cos he was too arrogant and tried to tell her what to do.
The story is told in first-person multiple POV from Calliope and the guys, including the bully, Vitas. This suggests that Vitas will eventually be one of her harem, but I can't accept it because he tried to MURDER her. This goes beyond mere bullying, and at other times he's very violent to her, kicking her, beating her up. It's not something any woman ought to forgive. If she does add him to the harem later, she'll be just like an abused woman who goes back to her abuser. Sure, we're given a glimpse of Vitas having daddy issues and an abusive father, but that is no excuse for choosing to walk in his father's footsteps. I do NOT want him to be in her harem, because even if he's remorseful later, I could never trust a man who has been so violent to me, especially unprovoked.
As a woman, I was quite appalled by the misogynist attitudes of all the professors in the academy (except Zathrian, who's sweet on her). And as an educator I was appalled that they'd give her so many essays to write that she couldn't even finish them and only managed two hours of sleep. You'd expect if the Gods were so interested in who got to go to the academy that they had to personally hand-pick the candidates via their oracle, they'd play a more active role in also selecting appropriate professors for the academy and making sure their wishes were carried out, their warriors trained appropriately. It seems stupid that they'd select Calliope and then sort of dump her at the academy and let the professors refuse to teach her anything useful and be condescending towards her. Honestly I expected Triton to rise from the sea and zap that stupid headmaster for not respecting his wishes in selecting Calliope as student for the school. None of the adults seem to realise that they are basically calling the Gods' judgement into question when they think that Calliope doesn't belong there or can't do the things the male students can do. This is a huge weak point in the story, and one I can't get past.
Also I felt like Calliope was weak, cos in the first class when the professor told her to write an essay, why didn't she just demonstrate that she could use her magic to create a weapon instead of meekly bowing and scraping and accepting the assignment? Sometimes she's outspoken, like in the defense class when she corrects Ambrose's stance as he shoots an arrow, but at other times she's wimpy. She can knock Vitas out during class but every other time he accosts her outside of class, she does nothing to defend herself and just whimpers and lets him do whatever he pleases. Her characterisation is extremely uneven.
I also felt like she let her hormones rule her way too much, with Rafe and with the professor. Particularly the professor, because she knows both of them could get into trouble if they give in to the physical attraction, but she doesn't care. And she's the aggressor with Rafe. This woman who's supposedly a virgin and was brought up sheltered and taught to be a perfect lady, it's like when it came to sex suddenly her character changed 180°. She is too uninhibited in what she wants, like when she purposely moves against Rafe when he rescues her and is trying to heal her on the beach.
I would have liked more explanation about their magic and what they're capable of doing. We know that Rafe can heal, is it a specific gift that he has, or can all of them do it? Maksim could conjure up lights, again is it just him who can do that or can all of them do it?
Overall I felt that this story was lacking in emotion. She slept with Rafe because she's drawn to him, but he's very gruff with her and kept pushing her away, so he's not taking care of her heart. Ambrose and the professor both say they care about her, but I couldn't figure out why, as they hardly know anything about her. Mostly it seems to be just because she's a girl and she's pretty. For Ambrose, I think there's the added novelty that she didn't fall at his feet immediately and she called him out on his attitude, which no one ever has done. He's self-absorbed. Maksim seems to like her because they are both outsiders, so it makes him feel less alone. There's no one who really supports her and believes in her and cheers her on. Twice when she broke down, the professor was there to comfort her, but none of the others appear to care very much how she feels. I won't be reading the rest of the series.
This was a great read and not something you want to start reading at Midnight. The story immediately sucks you in and you are rooting for Calliope before she's even accepted into the school. Society wants to place Calliope in a box, one where women are seen not heard and doting little wives. However this is not and never has been a dream of hers and secretly all her life she's dreamt of going to Triton Academy only it's always been an all girls school.... until now. Once Calliope is accepted her life goes upside down but she's ready for the challenge. There is some bullying here because of course there are some men who just can't accept a woman being smart and as capable or more capable than them. Everyone including most of her teachers shun her and don't even give her a chance. Through strength of will and determination Calliope knows she must show her worth and prove herself amongst her peers. Why else would the Gods have chosen her if she wasn't mean to be there. With the help of a few new friends, a roommate and a teacher Calliope is on the road of redemption and most likely love if things keep on as they are. I'm really hoping the bully is not going to be one of her men because I need him gone... Great series start and I'm off to start book 2 ASAP.
Honestly this was just what I needed ... not just an academy but triton ... this twist was beautifully written it sucked you and and kept you in !! The characters are all amazing even the ones you hate !!! I loved this book !! Can’t wait to read book 2!!
While the basic storyline isn’t that different from the majority of these academy set series, having it be with mer-people was quite the hook. I liked Calliope, and how she didn’t give up. She is friendly by nature, but this academy is a testosterone fest that really needs a smack down.
Triton's Academy is the first book in the A Daughter of Triton series. In this, you will meet Calliope. She had her father and aunt to look after her until she went to school. Unfortunately, for her aunt, she ended up getting into an all-male school. It was secretly her dream to get into Triton Academy because she has no desire to go to the all-female school or become a wife to anyone on the list her aunt gave her.
After accepting, it's definitely an interesting world. Guys are sort of surprising her in some ways with how they treat her. Then there's the guys she was prepared to look out for who didn't surprise her. They were complete douche canoes, and I can't wait for karma to come back to them.
Other than that, there's some sexual tension and glimpses of potential romances. I'm not exactly sure if we've met everyone who could be in her harem or not. I'm certainly hoping one person is not in it and happily dies in the next book. Or something.
In the end, I'm intrigued to see what's going to happen in the next book. Hoping for more romance but also wanting some good revenge too.

This is a new author for me. And after the blurb I was eager to read this book. The characters are interesting. And there is a guy who becomes her instant enemy but I think the author is playing into the enemy to lovers trope because why should this guy get chapter with his POV if there isn’t going to be more. I like that Calliope the FMC goes against the expectations of her aunt and also the expectation against the societies right behaviour for woman. There is the arranged marriage trope in there too, but Calliope does not want that.
I liked most that the author wrote a glossary for her world. She explains pronunciations and also several terms we did not necessarily know, titles, cities of Atlantis. It would have been great, if the characters name would have been added.
It’s a feel good book with a few dramatic incidents.
I’m not going to lie, this book stressed me out lol. She’s the first female at the academy that serves the god Triton. We get one sex scene at the end. I’m so curious if our villain is going to end up being one of their group. I don’t know, but I want to read more.
Triton's Academy was pretty straightforward in the blurb and it does give me that but there is a sense of underwhelming magic use for elements beyond the initial stages of world building.
The selling point of this story is the part of FMC being the only girl in an all male academy, the whole Atlantis and mer people was just an added bonus to get something more. I feel like the story has a very simplistic approach and works just fine for getting the FMC at the academy but when it's time to start adding layers and build towards this one woman ship that needs substance more than this one liner of 'she is there to prove that she belongs there' thing that it starts to appear dull and shallow.
Calliope was a decent character, the guys on one hand had very distinctive feel with their stereotype vibe but every brief POV felt like just another iteration of being mushy towards Calliope. Even with the insta-attraction or whatever, it still feels paced like a slow burn with most of the guys.
The under utilisation of the magic aspect restricts this book from being anything beyond just another academy book. I kept waiting to see more content with her powers involved beyond venting in the ocean for one scene but I never get that. This just basically ends up being nothing new if you are familiar with the academy trope.
This book was pretty good. It did have some holes, like a murder that went nowhere but it did grip me. In the end I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed the building relationships with Calliope, Rafe and even the professor. I thought she could have made Ambrose work for it more. It was all forgiven a bit too easily for my liking. Poor Maksim has been friend zoned. I would have loved to see some sexual tension between the two of them but she seems to have him like a brother. Shame. Love to see the underdog get the girl. Vitas plays a great villain. All the right characters at play. Looking forward to book 2.
I liked the main story of her being a powerful mer woman with lots of potential showing the guys who’s boss. But it felt kind of weird for her to never use any of it?! It would have a lot of potential to have a deeper story with more use of her gifts.
Also I didn’t like the way all of the guys seemingly always started “connecting with her as soon as she was vulnerable and emotional. Which sometimes felt a bit like a repetitive thing where the guys were taking advantage of her state of mind.
I love a strong heroine that knows her worth and is confident without being OTT brash and abrasive. I also really like this author's take on Merfolk. This book certainly delivers, and I can't wait to see where this series goes.
The concept was very intriguing but I was not blown away by the execution. With an RH there must be a distinction between each of the leads however it felt like some of the male characters were blending together. I also was supremely annoyed by the overprotectiveness of the love interests to the point it felt like Calliope was nothing more than a fragile puppet rather than a strong heroine.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have always had a things for merfolks and the mysteries of the ocean. This book had a way of pulling into the world of Calliope and her struggles. There are limits put on the women of this society. A little of that changes when the oracle picks Calliope to attend Triton's Academy and she is the first woman to be chose. That are some mixed emotions and feelings of what happens once she is there. I have a feeling there is much more to her and she will find it along the way. I have some idea what is going to come next but I will hold out saying them here. I ready for the next book.
Seriously loved this story. I had been in a rut with horrible books till I found this one. I love how this book is detailed, but not to the point of boring. Give it a read you wont be disappointed.
This book started off soo strong, but I feel like the author completely ruined the book. The storyline is such a great idea and could’ve been executed so much better. I wanted to see more magic, world building and overall better plot. 90% of the book was just men lusting over Calliope. I’m sad because this book had so much potential :( also, not every character needs a POV like bffr 💀
I think this is my first book involving mermaids and mermen. I wasn't really sure of what to expect from this type of a book but it was a satisfying first read that has created in interest in me to pick up more books revolving around the merfolk......
Calliope. I fell in love with her name the second I read it. I'm a sucker for unique names and the other that caught my interest was Zathrian. I definitely want more of him.
The general characteristics of the book are kind of different from what I'm used to reading but I really haven't read any others involving this so I'm not sure but it definitely kept my attention enough to make me finish it and was constantly on my thoughts when I wasn't reading.
For the choosing, I would have liked to see a kind of big ceremony where like maybe all the young are assembled and then the oracle chooses the first Daughter of Triton out of the crowd and people gasp and are shocked. It felt kind of abrupt when the Sons came in and were like "Hey! You're chosen to attend the academy. Hope you're ready."
I'm really not sure about the plot. If you really think about it, nothing really happened. There was no intrigue, no mystery, nothing to really look forward to. To me, it kind of felt like a prequel rather than the first book because there was no real plot development. It was just about the academy, the guys and Calliope settling in.
The pace was really fluid and there were definitely moments that made me giggle like a schoolgirl (well, I am one but you get my point, right?). It was kind of cute to see her interactions.
Something felt kind of..... Well, I'm not sure what the correct word would be. Is there something like a cheesy cliché that really isn't such a popular cliché? Because that's what this whole book felt like to me. Like the situations are really similar but they are not? Like in a movie? Ugh, I really don't know what I'm trying to say. Does someone else feel this? The book was kind of predictable.
It was a really entertaining read though. Would definitely recommend it. I'm currently going through a reading slump where everything is boring to me but this book kind of lifted me out of it.
Whew, For my first book review ever, I think that's kind of lengthy. Cheers to me!!! 🥂

Welp, starting 2022 with a bang in the wrong direction in regards to my reading. My first book of the year was a one star. This fucking sucked. I understood that the whole book was centering around a girl who was entering an all boys school, but the misogynistic world was just so annoying. I think what made me overall bored and disappointed was that Calliope wasn't that tough and didn't really stick up for herself. One example is that she was assigned thousands of essays instead of learning how to control magic and other stuff. Other heroines would have stood their ground but Calliope let everyone walk all over her. Furthermore, Vitas literally tried to kill her by tying her legs to an anchor trying to drown her. There was no retaliation or consequence to Vitas which was sad. Furthermore, the guys were all super meh. Not going to lie, totally thought that Ambrose was going to be the villain because Calliope rejected him. I liked Maksim but was soft. Rafe pushed Calliope away and that sex scene was not the best. I get that Calliope is the daughter of an esteemed general and Rafe is the son of a traitor but still. And then there is Professor Elara. I don't know if I missed the note that said that there was going to be a teacher student relationship but I try to avoid those. Overall, Calliope was weak, the world was not built well and it was a slog to get through this book. The only way I read this book in five days was because it was 200 pgs and I was determined to finish at least one of the books I started.

You know those stories that showcase the underdog overcoming impossible odds and winning despite them? The kind you throw you first up at and cheer, even reluctantly? This is one of those, though she is more of an underdog because of OTHER people’s perceptions and not her own circumstance, as difficult as that is. It’s an interesting mix and done well.
Slow burn, Slow build Academy RH, fantasy. Pseudo cliffhanger Rating = R Character age range = 22+
Pros: - World building. - Characters are very intriguing. - Mermaids, mermen... is awesome. And they don’t have tails!! - Rafe.. he just might be my favorite.
Cons: - Vitas. Alright, so very blatant villain.... BUT we get POVs from him?? It’s so easy to pin the bad on him (and let’s face it, the guy is horrible) but it makes me wonder if that is just TOO easy.
Really enjoyed the book. Rafe is broody but he was my favourite! All the men are totally different in personality....just really hoping Vitas isn’t a potential love interest....he’s a total t@#t. If I’d been punched, had my hand broken and had an anchor strapped to my feet and thrown into the sea I couldn’t be able to forgive and forget!

This is definitely a unique take on mer-people and Atlantis. Calliope was a strong character with deep emotions and a definite need to prove herself. I'm interested to see where the story goes and which of the guys ends up in her harem. I'm also curious about if there is a deeper plot about corruption within the society of Atlantis. So, next book please!?
I loved this!!! Such a cool concept for mer people. I love that they are evolved Atlanteans. It gives them their own culture and history behind all the action. Beautifully written!
Calliope is the daughter of a general who dreams of attending Triton's Academy. Her father may have trained her like a son but the academy is an all male school until the oracle announced thay she was chosen to attend the academy. The first ever and only female in their history. She was given a choice to either attend Triton's or Ampitrite's Academy. She only had one choice.
Attending the academy had its challenges for her especially with the misogynistic men and almost dying. This is a reverse harem and I think she got to meet all her potential guys except that one guy who I really don't like unless he changed for the better.
I waiting for the development with her other potential men especially Zatharian. I would also be interested to know more about their backgrounds and the mother of Calliope.
I wonder if their gods will come into play further in the story and if Calliope will start he change for other females to attend Triton Academy.
I really enjoyed this book. It starts strong with a woman breaking tradition, and the struggles of changing the world's image of the role women should play. The POVs are done very well. We get a very nice view of the world they live, what it's like growing up in their families, personalities, and their change towards each other. I love the opportunity of getting in our bad Vitas' headspace and how he operates too. It's unique, and I love every bit of it.
It was interesting i guess i would say, but i got annoyed at both the mc and the other characters for looking down on woman which was pretty annoying i just wanted a badass to put them in place which i didn´t really feel like Calliope did. She was both fragile and strong at the same time. Rafe was one of the few i sort of liked ish at the end, he grows on me. I have a hate relationship with Vitas, i feel like he will be in her harem but i will hate that. He is cruel because of his upbringing aka his father who has only shown him how to be like a "man" ish.
This was a lot better than I thought it would be. The world building was good and I found it interesting. It sucks that Calliope has to go against the grain and be the first and only women in Triton Academy. She faces so many misogynistic comments and rude men who think less of her because shes a woman. I hope she proves them wrong. I hate Vitas and really hope he grovels hard if he's in her harem. I do wish she would've made Ambrose work a little harder after his comments. Excited to see what's next.
I didn't know it was a reserve harem but I enjoyed it, not totally my style but really easy to read.
I would say it depicts a simple problem but in an intricate world. I really liked understanding the world better and all the little things whilst following Calliope's struggle being the only woman.
If you are looking for a quick read about merman, an all-men academy with a woman attending for the first time with angst this is it.
Atlantis meets academics. Loved it all. The characters had so much depth and fun within the pages that I was glued to the pages. Sparky Fmc was perfect. Plot was brilliant and had me so drawn to the story that I lost track of time. Beautiful take on an academy romance book and can't wait to see where Aleera takes us next in this series. Need book 2 asap!
Easy read, completed in one sitting. Easy to follow storyline, nothing groundbreaking in plot but it was enjoyable having small mythology references. A well-paced filler book, I’m not against completing and adding the full series to my book count this year. 😊
**Re-reviewed to 4 stars as like the second book in this series, this does for me land in the higher end of a 3 star rating (3.6/5!)
This is a really promising start to an exciting series! I enjoyed this book thoroughly 🤩 Triton's Academy drew me in with merfolks, magic and Calliope's intriguing men (one of my faves being prof zaddy 😏). I'll be starting book 2 asap!
