The Consort Duet #1

Fae's Consort

Rate this book
They call me the village spinster. I rather enjoy it. Single and free to dance with the witches under the moonlight whenever I please—what could be better than that?

When the day king shows up to take ten changelings as his consorts, I’m happy those selection days are behind me. At least I thought they were. But instead of ten young females, King Solano chooses only one. Me. Emma Druzy, sock darner and 28-year-old spinster of Moonhollow. He takes me to the day realm, a world of sun and beauty the likes of which I’ve never imagined.

Solano is far more than he seems, his wit and his warmth breaking down my walls. But there’s danger here, too, the sort that creeps up on you despite the bright light of day. And if I’m not careful, I’ll lose my heart to the day king or my life to his enemies.

(Lily’s note: Fae’s Consort is a full-length novel that is the first in a completed duet. Mind the cliff.)

Although the plot was interesting, it was lacking in details. Emma (FMC) and chosen Consort liked to verbally spar, yet she mostly lacked gumption, intelligence and was seriously lacking in gross motor skills (ie. constantly tripping/swooning into the arms of her King). Although Emma is 28, it felt like she was 10 years younger. Solano, although protesting he had no interest in claiming Changelings, seemed to have no reservations in objectifying his Consort. I’m not sure I would continue the series. It’s probably more suited to a younger reader.

Nothing happens until the last 10% of the book

Seriously, she just waits around in the palace all day. For 90% of the book, there's no action or steamy scenes, no world building or character development. The characters are generic and have no interesting motivations. Idk why I stuck around to be honest.

Cliffhanger is annoying but I'm not invested in continuing. I guess I'll never know if things work out! 💅

It was bad, and I am annoyed at that book because I liked the setting a lot.

So let's start with that.

The world-building:
I pick different books with different expectations and clearly I didn't pick this one expecting a Lord of the Rings kind of deal... and don't get me wrong, of course it wasn't. But it was still above what I had expected!

The fae world is interesting and catchy. I was definitely sold on it, in itself, but I also particularly liked how it was introduced. Which was not at all, we just catch glimpses as we go. Nobody stops to describe a fae or explain a particular aspect of the world, because the 2 main characters are the alternating narrative voices and why would they pause to thoroughly describe or explain the world they live in? The setting is straightforward enough that this stylistic choice doesn't make the story confusing, but maintains immersion by staying in character voices.

NB: This story happens in the same world as the previous series of books this author wrote, so a very disillusioned reader -not me, obviously.... *cough, cough- could very well wonder whether that narrative style she likes a lot might not just be a byproduct of the author lazily assuming that readers will have read her other stories and/or not caring to reintroduce her world. Well, maybe, but result stands, so I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt!

Unfortunately that's more or less where the positive things I have to say about it stop. The rest is pretty bad... writing is fine, and gets the job done nicely enough. The problem lies mainly in the content itself.

So, the content:

The characters start likable but VERY quickly turn not only nonsensical and ridiculous, but also boorish, for good measure.
The world setting tries to make us care about the kingdom and its age-long social inequalities, about the new king who allegedly wants to bring up change, about the heroine who is supposedly smart and strong...

Well. All I see is a king with a neanderthal-like attitude, constantly oscillating from "Grrr wanna mate" to "Grrr wanna fight" (which I guess could be seen as a constant "Grrr wanna pound something" state, now that I think about it). He apparently can't finish a skirmish without bailing to hump his new consort or see a meeting through without trying to kill a lifelong friend for even just talking to her. Let's add to this that the kingdom is presented as a relatively refined place, interactions within the court seem to follow a certain decorum and power struggles are several times hinted as games played through intrigues and scheming... so that barbaric attitude of the king really clashes with the setting and just makes him seem all the more stupid and ridiculous.

As for the consort in question... well, no wonder they like each other I guess. She constantly proclaims that she is a strong and independent woman, dancing naked with the witches and all (yes we know, you've told us 10 times already - so feminist and shit: check, duly noted) but then making inane dialogue replies and trying to solve power intrigues with catfights. This scene in the women baths... I facepalmed so hard my forehead is still red. In the previous chapter, the king highlights how it's important for his consort to be able to hold her ground with the ladies of the court, if she is to have a life richer than just being the king's whore... fast-forward a couple pages and we find her echoing that belief, except it seems that, to her, it meant . If you were hoping for some kind of story about a consort deciding to rise above her station by willpower and wits alone, until she becomes a ruling force in her kingdom, wrong story.

Anyways, top it all with the fact that the romance is bypassed for pure sexual tension, add some inconsistencies and illogical plot points and sprinkle with very cliché/exaggerated side characters ().

What a mess. I do like the Fae's world though, so maybe I'll check out the other series, but I already almost didn't finish that one so it will all depends of how much idle time I get over the Holiday break.

Let me just start by saying I hate my F self for reading a book that I quite knew that it will end on a cliffhanger and the author still hasn't written the second one. Now I won't be able to think for days because I so badly want to know the rest of story 😭. I was attracted to this book by its beautiful cover, for some reason I thought it was a historical fantasy because of the dress, nevertheless I'm not dissapointed. This is my first time reading a book about Fae and I really enjoyed it. I listened to the audiobook and read at the same time and I really loved this experience. Both the narrators had a really wonderful voice especially the male, his voice was rich and hot which added to my enjoyment. All what I need in this year is the second book so please Lily Archer give me a hope that we will see it soon. I loved the heroine Emma, she is strong and stand for herself from the very beginning, even though her ignorance and her not doubt the bad people irritated me a little I still rooted for her. I also loved our hero Solano and I can't wait to see how his personality as a king will evolve in the next book. Let's all hope that it will be here soon or I'm going to loose my mind 💔 This is exactly why I don't read series about the same characters, the cliffhangers are a pain.

OMGOSH

Wow what a great book book but it STINKS because it is a cliff hanger that will have you gnashing you’re teeth saying NOOOOOO. What happens now??? Lol. Great writing and a great story. Don’t look for the HEA yet it probably is in future books. Hate to love this one but I do and I can’t wait for the next book. Happy reading.

Always a good choice

Lily Archer is a solid author. While none of her books are 'stand alone' she makes up for the cliffhangers with solid plot and enjoyable characters. Also- she doesn't drag it out forever- as a few other authors I've cone across do...
This will be wrapped up within 1 to 2 more installments instead of 4 books later and nothing is resolved.

I went fully into this book thinking I knew what to expect: a hot steamy romance, a hot steamy alpha male fae and hot steamy sex. I got neither. (ఠ్ ˓̭ ఠ్)

# 1
I have no idea where to start. That was a hot mess - and not even hot in a sexy way. Let's talk about the plot because that was a lot. I didn't know you could pack so much nonsense story in just 200 pages. It felt like a whole 500 pages book tried to press it in a shorter format. There was so much: the unruly society with lesser faes who want to be recognized, our main character Emma who was just confused and naive the whole time, our main character Solano, the horny king, who just wanted to bang Emma, a revolution, intrigues by our typical jealous fae girl, and the lame one-dimensional villain. When I think about it further that was the story of a whole trilogy. I was a bit overwhelmed.

# 2
I had two issues with the characters: 1) there were way too many. I really lost it when there were more and more characters introduced and I was just confused all the time and tried to find out what all their connections were. So the problem is with way too many side characters that they can't get fleshed out. 2) Emma and Solano weren't really fleshed out either. Solano was 50% of the time horny or super duper stressed out by being a king or a toxic male alpha posing around with: "She's mine!" Emma was 50% clueless about what's going on on court or either horny or tried to fend off some fae alphas who wanted to rape her. Did I got my fae smut? Yes! But they never had sex until the end where they got max 1 1/2 pages what left me really disappointed.

# 3
The ending!! I ... I don't know what to say. The author really cramped out all of the possible and worst endings, chugged it in a cocktail and left it on a cliffhanger. ŷ doesn't even state that this is a series so I was just: Σ(・Д・)!?
Until half the book I would have given it three stars but the author tried to write a serious book series in 200 pages and it didn't work out and doesn't hold the promise it was given. I just wanted plotless fae smut ok

PS: I forgot to mention something.
1) Why had all the male faes so many italien names? Solano, Tristano.... srsly 😂
aaaand 2) in one scene Solano was eating a fucking crossoint!! And I was like: what?? France exists in this world? So yeah the worlsbuilding was also a hot mess.

Good

How mean to end the book right there, Lily.

I love Emma and Solano and can't wait for the next part of this. What will happen to Emma? Will the nobles rose against Solano for what he did to Varan? What will happen to Gwenarie for her part in things? Will Brunilla and her rebels rise up? There's a lot to look forward to.

Holy cheezits!!!

Wow! So much wow! I can't believe how it ended. Emma is a free spirit, totally happy with being single and dancing with witches in the moonlight. Solano is determined to not be his father. He doesn't even want to pick out any consorts, but Emma's dad's catches his eye and that's that. Super good story, fun characters, and one helluva cliffhanger. So looking forward to the next one!!

The pacing seemed off to me- it started slow and we meet the heroine- a nightling changeling who gets taken by the Fae King for his concubine. There’s a nice long journey to the castle and slow development between hero and heroine (no worries - he didn’t take others for his harem just her) and then some politics and stuff at the castle- and then there is rush of activity, it seemed, right near the end. Evil guy, evil brother, attack, betrayal, Cliff hanger!!

The world building is a little hazy. Like nothing exists past these few characters. The whole book references this whole ‘fated mate thing without any details which makes the end all kinds of confusing.

And okay- pet peeve not just to this book but to make the other woman a total shrew. Why can’t she be a nice person the hero just doesn’t love? Why does she have to be Cruella/Bellatrix?!

But I will read book two so... two stars.

Holy cliffhanger! I need the next book, like, an hour ago when I finished this one. Lily Archer is a new-to-me author, but I've already downloaded Fae's Captive from her backlist because I need more! These stories are well-written, action-packed, and steamy. Highly recommend!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! When you read as much as I do, it’s easy to get bored. But this book will NOT bore you! A fantastic romance even though I’m dying to get my hands on the next book. WARNING: it has a cliff hanger! But worth it!

I love this book so much! This is my second time through it. And it it was just as good on the second read.

Solano is King of the Day Realm. As part of a treaty with the Night Realm, he is to pick 10 changelings for his harem. However, he comes across Emma before he meets all the women and he is drawn to her. He decides to take only her, none of the others. Emma thinks herself a spinster . . . At 28! These two have some hot chemistry, but the mate bond hasn’t appeared. But their desire for each other will change everything.

I absolutely love both of these characters. Their attraction to each other is sizzling, and their banter is humorous and filled with double entendres, and I loved every minute of it. Amidst dealing with the racism against changelings and lower fae, Emma also has to deal with a jealous, spiteful high fae who thinks she’s going to marry Solano and be his queen. Oooh, I love when they get their comeuppance. The best line between these two is when Gwenarie is talking shit and mentions that she probably tastes like garbage . . . Hey Gwenarie, Solanos sure liked how I tasted after dinner the other night . . . LMAO, our heroine sure knows how to tit for tat, and I loved it!

One thing I didn’t like . . . I know they have to have conflict, or we don’t have a book, right? But it seems like, in nearly all of these PNR books, the main characters Form a bond and all it takes is a hint from 1 person, that they KNOW is a bad guy and BOOM! They believe the worst of their wouldbe mate. That is really the only time I got annoyed with Emma is when she so willingly believed the worst of Solano just because the most jealous fae in the kingdom said it. And I thought she was a fool to accompany Gwen on a “shopping trip.

Other than that, I couldn’t put this one down. Loved the story and couldn’t wait to see what happens. It does end on a cliff hanger, and it took FOREVER for the sequel to come out. Do I recommend this book? Oh hell yeah.

So sorry for the things that I will say next😅🙏😢. But I need to be Frank and Honest.

This book is like a cheap imitation of the A Court of Thorns and Roses. The Painter Female Protagonist, a Faerie Male Protagonist who brings that Painter into the fae realm. The Mate thingy.

The Start is VERY interesting but after that, It plummets into a downward spiral. Sighhhh.... I really love faerie books but this. OMG.

The Male Protagonist, King Solano has only one consistent thought running through his mind, you know what? On how to seduce Emma his consort or always thinking of her or thinking about sexual thoughts about her or they are doing some nasty things. 😭😭😭. I have read many Paranormal Romance books as in MANY MANY MANY Books. Intimate Scenes are not bad but if it overshadows the plot or the other conflicts, it's bad.

In this book there are many conflicts to solve but it is just swept under the rug which is annoying.

King Solano is powerful but I think the Villians are smarter than him. What is power without intelligence. I really just want to enter this book and throw a bucket of water on King Solano so that his libido will lessen so he can think properly.

Emma, I love SOME of her personality. Her bravery towards those people who bullied her. But other than that she's USELESS😂🤣😅😢.

I don't want to hate this book really, but this is my thoughts. I just finished this book in just a few hours. So it is still fresh in my mind. I don't know if I will continue reading this book. Even if there is a huge cliffhanger at the end.

I am not affected enough to care about this two characters which is SO sad because I want to like this book so much😭😭😭. I'm really dissatisfied and disappointed.

Damn it!! I thought this was a stand alone... I should have know better because Lily Archer lives to kill her readers with cliffhangers... I should not read another book from her until the series is finished!! 😂😂😭

To me, this book had a bit of regency feel but set in a Fae world. Solano is the new Day Fae king, and part of his agreement with the NightLand is to exchange 10 consorts and all of them are changlings that do not have power.

When we meet Emma, she is very mouthy and a bit of a spinster. She is 28 and still lives with her mother. She doesn’t want to marry nor does she want to be a consort. But that isn’t up to her and when Solano meets her, he wants only her.

Emma runs her mouth a lot and gets into some trouble but Solano actually likes her smart mouth. The banter between them and fun but also you can see their bond and especially from him. I think he is a bit better at showing his feelings while she doubts him more. He is the king so it’s only natural. The relationship is interesting to read. He tries very hard to be better but so much is going on within him that he can’t control nor does he understand.

Lily does answer some questions at the end but honestly leaves me with even more! I think she left a lot of clues about what is to come. I’m so looking forward to reading the next book!

A bargain. A romance. An underlying storyline. A few evil characters. A broken curse. This novel ticks a lot of boxes and was a really great and quick read.

Plot wise, I think it was pretty interesting. There were some twists I didn’t see coming yet also some very obvious points. Like the jealous betrothed and the bastard brother, for instance. Both storylines behind those characters were pretty easy to pick up. The story being the night prince and the seekers is much more intriguing and I didn’t see it coming.

Character wise, I’m disappointed with Emma for not being a stronger character and doubting Solano based on Gwen’s statements. Like come on, really?!? You’re gonna believe Gwen over the guy you’ve been spending months with?? And even after Gwen sold her to Varan, she was still questioning Solano. Ugh, that just irritated me.

Anyway, not a bad book with a recent cliff hanger ending. I’m not super engaged with the characters, so I’ll probably put book two in my TBR but probably won’t be reading it right away.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

3.5 - 4.0 stars. Wish there was a little more development between the 2 leads. There always wasn’t much in the way of the consort aspect of this either. There are a lot of terms that the author takes for granted that the readers will know because she includes a definition section at the beginning of the book. However, this should just be for added reminder/support after it’s explained in the book (thankfully I knew the terms from other authors books because I only knew there was this section halfway through the book...). I will say there were very few grammatical errors (none that even detracted from the book) which is extremely impressive for a KU book nowadays. Overall was a decent story, flowed nicely so made it a quick read, and was engaging enough for me to contrite to the next book. I would recommend for a light read.

Mildly interested

So this is the first Lily Archer book I’ve read and I can say after the slow start that it was pretty good. The story line was compelling but I wasn’t really into the way the story way told, where the story vacillated back and forth between both main characters. I appreciate the look into both characters lives, but it was a hard adjustment and seemed like a more jarring switch rather than a see less transition between them. The wording and language was average and kept me mildly interested but I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be based on some of the amazon ratings. The cliff-hanger at the end does make me want to read book 2, but honestly I’m still only mildly interested based on the wording and language throughout the book.

Ok, here's my review. as always LILY ARCHER DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!!! This book has EVERYTHING a reader could ever want!!! a dirt poor girl very happy with her life, incredibly handsome king attempts to sweep her off her feet. The dirt poor girl has a smart mouth the king can't get enough of, takes her to his kingdom against her will, sorta, jealous wanna be girlfriend and her backstabbing frenemys make life unpleasant for the charming dirt poor consort of the king. OMG!!! there is just way too much going on in this one book to shorten or talk about. Just trust me IT'S TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

My first ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️of 2023!

One of my prerequisites for a 5 ⭐️ is it has to make me laugh! This story did that and so much more. I loved the tension and that there was just a hint of political intrigue. I typically hate political stories, but this one felt logical. It wasn’t overly convoluted and you could easily follow along with what was happening. At the same time it didn’t feel too predictable and I found myself wanting to keep reading chapter after chapter. Each page added to the story and helped you get closer to the characters.

I, personally, do not mind a good cliffhanger. It’s what keeps me wanting to come back for more! I’m excited to get started on the 2nd book of this duet!
