As the investigation progresses, William runs into enemies old and new: Adrian Heath, from his school days, now a street dealer who he convinces to turn informer; and financier Miles Faulkner, who makes a mistake that could finally see him put behind bars. Meanwhile, William and his fiancée Beth enjoy making preparations for their upcoming wedding, though an unpleasant surprise awaits them at the altar.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Jeffrey Archer, and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Jeffrey Archer returns with another stellar novel in the William Warwick series. Taking readers back to the glory days of the 1980s, this police procedural is sure to impress many, particularly those who have a greataffinity for Archer's Clifton Chronicles.

William Warwick has been given a rare treat at work, a long overdue promotion to Detective Sergeant. However, with this comes a move to the Major Drug Squad for an intense case that could bring much notoriety. Large amounts of heroin have made its way into London, a drug that has crippled 1986 England and sent waves throughout the Metropolitan Police.

Warwick's promotion brings a new member to the team, DC Paul Adaja, whose interest in getting things done helps pave the way to a successful addition to the team. Working through the handful of confidential informants (CIs) at their disposal, Warwick and the team learn that there is a weekly meeting that could garner a great deal of potent arrests, though the location of the Viper remains a well-guarded secret. Through a series of mad car chases, working off crumbs of CI intel, Warwick is none the wiser when it comes to landing this big fish, but refuses to give up too swiftly.

On a personal note, Warwick and his fiancee, Beth, are eager to share their nuptials, planning a small ceremony that turns out to be anything but calm. Well-known criminal mastermind, Malcolm Faulkner, makes his presence known and tries to destroy any credibility Warwick might have, though the power of love appears to prevail.

When news comes that Faulkner is about to receive a shipment of drugs that could end him away for the foreseeable future, it's all hands on deck to make the bust. Faulkner cries foul and does anything he can to keep the changes from sticking, though the prosecutorial team is none other than Sir Julian and Grace Warwick, the father and sister duo of our beloved William. The case proceeds and the jury is empanelled, leaving the courts to decide the fate of Faulkner once and for all.

When Warwick discovers where he can find the Viper's Nest, he's quick to rush in that direction, though it won't be a peaceful arrest by any means. Casualties could be massive as these are the roughest of the rough, Warwick will soon learn that this is the least of his concerns. Entertaining throughout, Archer shows that he is still at the top of his game.

I have long been a fan of most anything that Jeffrey Archer puts to paper, having amassed a large quantity of high qualitynovels. This new series, which is actually the collection of writing referenced repeatedly throughout the Clifton Chronicles, may be set in the 1980s, but can easily hold the attention of the dedicated thriller fan.

William Warwick returns and plays a wonderful protagonist. While he is a sensible cop, his outgoing nature endears him to many. Always looking for the next big break in a case, Warwick works his magic in ways only Jeffrey Archer could connive. With his strong ties to family and his workplace, Warwick's character develops throughout this piece and there are hints that he will have to branch out in the upcoming novel, as he is sure to take on a new role or two.

Archer does well developing some of his secondary characters as well, who surely help enrich the story in many ways. From the others in the Warwick clan to those who work within the Met, each flavours the narrative effectively and advances Archer's ever-developing plot. While some are recurring characters, there are a handful of strong one-timers, all of whom keep the reader entertained throughout.

The book proves highly entertaining, advancing the series well while keeping things highly realistic. Set in the late 1980s, Archer uses this backdrop to develop a strong story with numerous plotlines that are sure to keep the reader guessing. There is not a 'dated' feel to the book, though surely the lack of technology mentioned is sure to be noticed by those scouring the narrative. Archer uses his wonderful style to take the reader on this twisted journey, as they lose themselves in the strong narrative. With decent lengthchapters, Archer uses his style to inject detail into the story, leaving the reader to picture things as they occur. Cliffhangers throughout and some great subplot development that makes wishing for the next book all but essential.

Kudos, Lord Archer, for another success. I can't get enough of your books and look forward to the next publication.

Jeffrey Archer has treated us to the seven-book The Clifton Chronicles. His new series, centered around Detective William Warwick, is another winner. Book #1 in the new series was excellent and so is Book #2, Hidden in Plain Sight.

The story picks up in 1986. William has advanced to Detective Sergeant and is now leading an elite unit created to track down London’s top drug baron and take him out. In addition, his nemesis from Book #1, Miles Faulkner, avoided a jail sentence for his crime in the art world and Warwick wants to finally bring him to justice. Archer brings us a colorful cast of characters, both good and evil, and provides us with lots of interesting policework and an intense trial. William is preparing to marry Beth, who works at the Fitzmolean Museum, which suffered at the hands of Faulkner. We know William is destined for great things and it is very enjoyable to watch his progression.

It’s a pleasure to read a Jeffrey Archer book as he is such a great storyteller. You can easily read this book if you haven’t read the first one in the series but go back and read Book #1. You’re sure to get hooked. Since Hidden in Plain Sight takes place during the 1980s, you know there’s lots more to come in this series. I'll be waiting for Book #3 and beyond.

Many thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and the incredible Lord Jeffrey Archer for an advance copy.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Masterful storytelling!

The second instalment in the William Warwick series features a complex storyline with very well developed characters. All the players from book one feature and newly promoted DS Warwick returns as a more mature but still self-deprecating, keen and eager detective.

Although the story continues from Book One, there is enough detail to read this as a stand-alone but I really enjoyed learning more about the original cast and many new ones too.

The crimes are extremely well scripted and the flow fast paced with Archers typical cliff hangers! My only negative is how long do I need to wait for the next novel in the series!

Very disappointing.
I truly refuse to believe that this book was written by Archer.
It was boring and (gasp!) amateurish.
There is a wedding scene that was supposed to be very dramatic but the level of politeness was too high to have caused any effect and it was quite silly with mediocre dialogues.
There was a court room drama that was very promising but it did not deliver (at least for me).
Although the characters are lovable there is one, the great Sir Julian, that shows some racism and even prejudice against women.
The ending was abrupt.

*Deception*

This instalment sees William Warwick promoted to a detective sergeant, with his promotion he is moved to another department in this case the drugs squad.

The area he is given means dealing with one of south London’s most notorious drug lords Aka Viper. His job is hard enough but in the background is his old nemesis from book one Miles Faulkner a slippery and wealthy character who appears well to do but beneath his outward appearance he is as crafty and as devious as they come. Then William finds himself in a situation where hidden in plain sight does not apply only to the criminals. What will he do?.

William Warwick has been promoted to Detective Sergeant and as DS Warwick, he is now part of the Drug Squad. He and his team are working to take down one of the largest drug rings in London. In addition, he is entangled with a criminal financier, Miles Faulkner, and his soon to be ex-wife, Christina. I enjoyed this mystery as it had a lot of police procedural in it and the characters were interesting and engaging. There were several side character storylines, which I think maybe a setup for later books, besides the obvious setup, at the end of this one, for the next installment. Remember when you read this that it is set in 1986, so the drug scene could seem quaint compared to the "advanced chemistry set" of drugs available today. Also, there is not the hard, gritty, edge that so many detective stories today seems to have. It was a nice change and I especially loved the side storyline with DS Warwick's wife Beth, and the art gallery she runs and her futile quest to snag a Vermeer.
I had a little trouble at first getting all the characters straight, and will, just because I like the series, go back and read . However, this book could stand alone, if, like me, you hadn't read the first installment.
Thank you ŷ and St. Martin's Press. I was a giveaway winner for this book and received a copy for a fair and honest review.

The second book in the William Warwick series continues on his career progression up the ranks of the London Metropolitan Police. The events documented in Hidden In Plain Sight follow on closely after those chronicled in Nothing Ventured, although Warwick (and much of his colleagues) have been assigned to the Drug Squad.

Fair warning before we go much further, this is an ongoing series and there are unresolved issues by the time Archer chose to draw a line under this book. If you’re planning on reading this one, be prepared to pick up the 3rd book in the series to find out if or how things are resolved.

It’s the mid-1980s and Warwick has now been promoted to Detective Sergeant. But with that comes a promotion away from his preferred Art Fraud Squad and he’s now part of the Major Drug Squad. The case he’s been handed is a big one and involves huge quantities of heroin that have been passed through London in increasing numbers as a result.

The man the investigation focuses on, who runs this drug trade, is known only as the Viper and he’s particularly careful when it comes to his movements. Infiltrating the Viper’s nest is going to be an all-consuming and difficult job.

The only task that holds greater importance for William is the fast approaching day of his wedding to Beth. They have become devoted to one another since the turmoil experienced as part of the previous book, Nothing Ventured. And so, on the big day, the only thing that can - and does - disrupt their happy day comes in the form of William’s nemesis, Malcolm Faulkner. But despite his best attempts at ruining the day, his plans are foiled, as has become routine, and William and his bride embark on their honeymoon.

While away on his honeymoon, the case to bring down the Viper continues to build. Not only that, Faulkner continues his brazen flaunting of his ill-gotten wealth and, in so doing, provides the Major Drug Squad a possible link to the Viper, with the help of an informant nurtured by William, that could finally be his undoing.

Once again, Jeffrey Archer has built up a rapidly expanding storyline that benefits from multiple subplots running at the same time. Two high profile cases, both of which require extensive coordination, exhaustive planning and quite a bit of luck, result in plenty of tense moments. It also gives Warwick the opportunity to cut his honeymoon short to get into the thick of the action.

Although the main focus of the story is William Warwick himself, Archer does a good job at juggling his other main characters, namely the fellow members of the Major Drug Squad. As well as the returning members from the previous book, a new up and coming officer, DC Paul Adaja, is introduced and promises to be a great foil for the deep thinking that Warwick does.

Once again, the story benefits from a sharp, crisp delivery that demands your attention and is filled with snappy dialogue, a compelling court scene and repeated blindsides designed to throw everyone off balance.

This is another enjoyable entry in the William Warwick series although I’m not particularly a big fan of the “to be continued nature of the ending. That being said, I’ll definitely be reading on to find out what happens with the unfinished business.

I was not as fond of this one as other reviewers were. I found the writing to be choppy and abrupt. You would be reading one section and all of a sudden, with no warning, you were in another scene of action. I didn't like it and it wasn't smooth.

This is Warwick's second book and there were big changes for him. No only on the personal front but at work where he was assigned to a special squad designed to stop the drug trade. They are not after the small guys selling joints on the street corner but the guys supplying the drugs. They are given a lot of freedom and money to accomplish their goals.

The first criminal they go after is their old enemy, Faulkner, who is serving a suspended sentence from the the last book. He is undergoing a divorce which takes up a lot of the book. Faulkner is implicated in a cocaine scheme and Faulkner uses an old school chum as an informant.

The other case involves a very clever dealer who takes all the resources of the squad to investigate. The man is very intelligent and the squad has to take really complex steps to try and catch this clever man.

Both story lines were interesting but you would go from one investigation to another to a glimpse in Warwick's private life on the same page. It was disjointed to say the least. The book ends with multiple cliff hangers that will certainly bring you back for book #3. Archer is an experienced author who knows how to entertain his audience.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

A rather dry uninteresting plot with dry uninteresting people.
Someone was trying to show off how much they know about art and artists! Seemed more like filler rather than a plot.
Because I didn’t read the previous book I found it hard to follow with so many characters. No background whatsoever for a new reader to get any idea who the characters are.
Don’t know why I bothered to read to the end because it was a non-ending.
Note: If you have not read the previous book don’t bother with this one.
What a waste of time.

Took me a little while to get into this one. Expectations were high but the weekend arrived and the next thing I know I’ve arrived at the end of the book! A great second book in a series of however many Mr Archer can write. I was going to give this 3 stars but the last 20 pages pushed me to give it 4 stars. I look forward to see what path William Warwick takes in the next instalment!

All my reviews have the possibility of spoilers, be warned!

So haha this review does not count at all. I bought this book five years ago randomly, when I read it I was so lost. Why? This is the second book in the series. My fault completely. Blame twelve-year-old me for this silly mistake. Maybe one day I'll start this series from the beginning and re-read the second book to give it a fair review.

The second installment of the series I must admit at points kept me wanting...
The characters were likeable but the plot was a bit underwhelming in some bits and pieces!
I was frustrated that a villain gets always his way and makes William Warwick and his team look like fools at times!
In this book I came to like the Hawk a lot more!
An issue of personal interest between William Warwick and Christina Faulkner gets clarified under dramatic circumstances but I was satisfied with the outcome!

This time the team is investigating a drug operation but the element of art isn't missing either!
As far as the plot about the two on going cases the action was well paced and in court sir Julian and his daughter Grace gave a stellar performance!

All around a good story but I felt it could be better at least in some parts! An issue that arose with one of William Warwick's colleague will have me reading the next book sooner than I anticipated!

This is the second book in the William Warwick series by author Jeffrey Archer. This is another enjoyable read in the series.

William Warwick is now a sergeant assigned to the Drugs Squad, who are currently attempting to hit the top dealers in an attempt to make an impact on the drug supply. William runs into Adrian Heath who he remembers from his school days who is now operating as a street dealer and convinces him to turn informer. Although William is tasked with taking down the major drug dealer known as the Viper his main goal is to arrest his nemesis, expert art thief Miles Faulkner. In Adrian Heath, William not only has access to information about the identity of the Viper, but he also has a connection to Faulkner that could finally capture Faulkner.

This is another cleverly written novel that shows the excellent storytelling of Archer, interesting characters, fun plots and addictive storylines. Very good cosy crime novel.

I love Jeffrey Archer so it pains me to write this, but I promised to be honest. I enjoyed the characters of this book and I could see myself reading more about DCI Warwick and his darling wife. But the writing style itself seems choppy and disjointed. I would start to follow a thread then my train of thought would be jumped off track either by a sudden change of scenery or time frame. Usually, when a book I'm reading does this I can pick up the thread in a couple of sentences but it was a difficult concept with this storyline.
But in no way am I giving up on Mr. Archer. This is a very uncommon issue with his books- usually, I'm hooked in the first chapter and can't put it down, all the way back to Kane and Abel, one of my first favorite modern fiction novels years ago. I'm a true fan of Jeffrey Archer and I look forward to his next book.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book. Archer is one of my favourite authors so it is always great to be approved and having read the first in the series a while ago, was pleased to be able to read the second William Warwick.

The series takes you back to the 1980's where William has just been promoted to Detective Sergeant and has been moved to the Drugs Squad. His first case is a drug dealer who is operating in London. Beth, his wife is expecting their first child and they bring in most of the characters from the last book including family and colleagues and old adversaries plus some new additions.

It was a little slow to start, but suddenly came alive and as with all Archer books there's a lot going on and its very exciting throughout. I would recommend reading the previous book in this series Nothing Ventured so you understand the background and you'll enjoy this book more more if you do.

I don't want to give anything away but cant wait until the next book in this series

I've read many books by this author and he truly is a solid 4 stars for me...sometimes higher. I enjoy his story telling. I could listen to the audios all day. He brings his characters to life with great details. So much so, they feel like family. I will say though that the MCs tend to be a little on the perfect side, but it works. Usually that kind of things bugs me, but not here.

The stories he tells makes me mourn a little when I finish them. So 4.5 stars here.

37th book of 2020 (161 Books read overall)

Rating - 5 Stars

*Important take from the book* - ‘Small details can make big differences.

Plot Summary - William Warwick has been promoted to Detective Sergeant, but his promotion means that he, along with the rest of his team, has been reassigned to the Drugs Squad. They are immediately tasked with apprehending Khalil Rashidi, a notorious drug dealer, who operates his extensive network out of South London.

As William’s team closes the net around a criminal network like none they have ever faced before, he devises a trap they would never expect, one that is hidden in plain sight . . .

My Review - Let me start the review of this book by saying that this isn’t a standalone novel, even though the publisher/author have mentioned it in the starting. The book is in continuum with Nothing Ventured, First part of William Warwick Series. So do read that first to get along with this and the upcoming parts.

This book is in continuation with the adventures of the first part, Nothing Ventured. But this time around William is been promoted as Detective Sergeant. William along with his team has been tasked to track down a Drug Lord whose identity has been totally unknown but goes by the street name of Viper. He is like a shadow in the Darkness but William and the team devise a clever plan to hunt him down and close shut his slaughter as well. That’s just not it. Our Con from the first book, Faulkner is about to take revenge on her wife and wants her to end up penniless after getting divorced with Faulkner. But William has some plan to prove Faulkner as Guilty. How William and team manage to do this is a trip to go on with. The book is filled with twist and turns, some of which are not anticipated. Along with the thrill to uncover the mystery and mastery of the Druglord, there are several emotional moments shared between Beth and William, William and his father and Grace and her father which made this book more appealing and applauding.

The bookend on some very steep cliffhanger and makes this series even more interesting. I’m waiting eagerly for the 3rd part, ‘Turn a Blind Eye which will be releasing of April 1st 2021. And I think I can guess why is the title of 3rd book in the series so. You too can find out why by reading ‘Hidden in Plain Sight.

Conclusion - Amongst the best work of Jeffrey Archer, I’ve read so far.

Hidden in Plain Sight is the second book in the Detective William Warwick series. I love British detective novels and this was a good one. William Warwick has been promoted to Detective Sergeant and they assigned him to the Drug Squad. His team is chasing a notorious drug lord in South London, the most involved case they have ever handled. William devises a complicated, innovative plan to take him down.

Warwick is a good character with strong moral values and a good work ethic. His nickname at the office is "choirboy". I think this book could standalone and a reader would be satisfied without having read the first book, although it would obviously provide more background and context if the first had been read. I found the book a little slow at the beginning, but soon enough I was engrossed. And, of course, there are cliffhangers - so I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment!

Read a Jeffrey Archer after a long time. This book is the second instalment in the William Warwick series, but can be read as a standalone novel.
As always, I immensely enjoyed the author's storytelling especially the smooth language, the characters and the twists and turns. I liked the two villians - brainy and evil, and the courtroom scenes.
Recommended to fans of Jeffrey Archer and to readers who enjoy well-written thrillers without gore.

Jeffrey Archer left me disappointed again.

The previous book of the series - Nothing Ventured wasn't as good as I expected it to be. There was no suspense throughout the novel, and the writing was really simple and boring. The plot got diverted on almost every page, and it was monotonous in each chapter. After finishing that book, I thought the second book of the William Warwick series would be somewhat better. However, I got my expectations wrong.

The book was, again, dull and uninteresting. This time, William Warwick has been promoted to Detective Sergeant, and his first assignment was to catch some drug lord Viper. He also has to deal with his previous enemy, Miles Faulkner and also meets his childhood friend Adrian Heath. Now he somehow needs to catch both Faulkner and Viper with his tactics and cunningness.

The plot seems interesting, right? Well, the book is not interesting at all. The book was made extremely boring because of the long conversations made by each character in each chapter. The writing was simple and not at all suspenseful. The only good thing about this book was that I could somehow keep on reading it. It wasn't gripping or anything, the story was a bit good so I thought of continuing it.

My recommendation - No. Not at all. It's not a good book at all.

Jeffrey Archer books have lately become predictable. There will be a protagonist who faced hardships to rise , is brilliant and will have linkages to royalty. He will be brilliant and hard working, will have a family or find a family where every member is again excellent at something and will have additional trait which will help the plot line . And there will be a villain who is diabolical to the core without any reason . It’s a world of black and white .
This book is the same but at the same time it’s a comfort read . Pick it up if you don’t want to exercise your mind and be languidly lost in a simpler world .

Another dud from Jeffrey Archer. I am looking forward to him moving onto another series and ending this one featuring William Warwick. This is the 11th book I have reviewed by Archer (and I read him long before ŷ was around, so there were plenty more). The inconsistency of his writing astounds me. I have given him ratings ranging from two stars to five. I have confidence that other books he will write in the future will be better.

Jeffrey Archer is an amazing storyteller and is currently in my “top authors - this means, authors I wanna read everything!

As I’ve stated before, I was afraid that William Warwick couldn’t live up to the expectations of the Clifton Chronicles. I still think the chronicles are better, but William is opening a hole in my heart!

I really appreciate the author’s way of engaging the reader in the story, in a sense that these characters start feeling like family/friends and we want everything to go good for them.

I couldn’t recommend more!
