A desperate single-mom. A dedicated FBI agent. Terrorists who want them both dead.
Single mom Vivi Vincent is thrust into her worst nightmare when she and her eight-year-old son are trapped inside a mall during a terror attack. Jed Brennan, a dedicated FBI agent on enforced leave, helps Vivi and her son survive the assault. But the danger is just beginning...
Vivi’s son may have witnessed critical details of the terrorists future plans and is targeted for death, but he’s mute, and he’s traumatized. When someone launches a strike against the FBI’s safe house, Jed fears the bad guys have an inside man. Not knowing who to trust, he hides mother and son in a log cabin deep in the heart of the Wisconsin Northwoods. There Jed and Vivi try to figure out how to unlock the information inside her son’s head.
What they don't bargain for is the red-hot attraction that flares between them or the extent of the sinister plot that threatens to rip apart any chance of happiness they might have together.

As I understand it, this series has different heroes/heroines in each book so they can be read in any order.
Single mother Vivi and her eight-year-old son Michael went to Minneapolis Mall before Christmas. As they were in a toy store, they heard a bang and gunshots. Vivi's instinct to protect Michael has to find the exit alone so she hid him under a cash register, and told him to stay put. Michael unintentionally saw the terrorists and heard their conversation. Also, at the mall was an off-duty Special Agent Jed Brennan.
This is an exciting thriller. The story hooks me right from the beginning and the character development is great. However, I find the pace a bit off, it was a tad slow when they have to move from witness protection to Wisconsin Northwoods and hide at Jed's cabin. The story picks up after Viv and Jed's attraction becomes hot & spicy! Overall, a good amount of action (combat kind, and lovin' kind). I didn't guess the motivation for the shooting, or the people behind it nor was I shocked by the reveal, but I do like how it ended! I'll be reading more from this series.
The audiobook was enjoyable. Read by Eric G. Dove!
Quick summary Single mother and linguist Vivi Vincent walks into the Minnesota Mall with her 8-year old son, Michael, and within minutes finds herself in the middle of one of the worst terrorist attacks since 9/11. FBI Special Agent Jed Brennan, on leave and on his way to his Wisconsin hometown, stops by the mall for some Christmas shopping and finds himself unwittingly in the middle of the action. He joins forces with the resourceful Vivi to escape but not before her son manages to overhear vital information about the terrorist that ultimately puts him at risk.
What I loved about the story The action starts pretty quickly and the tension never eases up throughout the book. Vivi's not only super protective about her emotionally challenged son but is quick-minded and resourceful. As terrified as she is for Michael, she's no damsel in distress, holding her own among all the alphabet law enforcement. Jed's smart and naturally bonds with the traumatized and mute Michael. I loved his relationship with the child as much as with Vivi. Their romance works, too, even when Jed screws up royally.
The inclusion of the terrorists' points of view made the story chilling, offering a perspective that was maddening and illuminating at the same time.
The bottom line The story is high tension with a complicated and intricate plot that wasn't easy to unravel let alone solve. Between worrying about Vivi and Michael, figuring out the terrorists' end game and who was the inside leak, I was completely enthralled. Though the nod goes to the suspense, the romance holds its own. Loving this series!
Loved it! Cold Pursuit is a gripping, intense, and action packed romantic suspense thriller that reads like a great movie. My only complaint is the same I had with the first book, , which is that I felt like the ending was a bit rushed for the H/h, and I wanted a more definitive HEA. Still, it’s an excellent romantic suspense read, and I’m really enjoying this series. I can’t wait for the next book, , to come out!
The first book in the series was so much better in terms of plot, romance, and character depth. There are layers upon layers of political manipulation and intrigue in this one.
**** There will be spoilers in my review below
Vivi was a decent decent h, and she's a wonderful single mother. I couldn't imagine the horrors of the mall, the pool, the safe house, the cabin, and then the hospital!!
There are some really irritating flags while reading this that take you right out of the flow. For example:
FBI agent using a credit card that could easily be traced to his family's cabin. Duh.
The constant use of the word "bad guys" is this really a term the FBI, CIA, and police officers use? It felt so childlike.
The narrators voice mumbled at times so I had a hard time understanding if he was saying Jed? Jet? Jeb?
The kid is in a hidden cabinet with a tiny crack to breathe through, I highly doubt he was able to see anyone in order to then recognize them in the future.
So the H had a past love. Mia? Some other woman he loved and she died in Afghanistan? She's brought up all the time is a reason why he won't fall in love again, but we know absolutely nothing about her or their relationship.
This is a very weak romance, almost zero character building. I have no idea why they even liked each other other than the adrenaline rush from constantly being under a death threat.
There's one intimate scene that's immediately over, and they both feel like it's a mistake.
4.5 Stars - Love it when a book delivers on both the suspense & the romance! Cold Pursuit is the perfect blend. The action starts right away as Vivi Vincent enters the Minnesota Mall with her mute son, Michael, and finds herself in the middle of a terrorist attack. FBI Agent Jed Brennan rescues them only to realize that Michael is in danger because of what he may have seen or heard while hiding from the terrorists. Jed vows to protect them, whisking them away to a safe house that proves to be anything but safe. And so begins an intense, action-packed story that held me on the edge of my seat from cover to cover. I loved Jed as he fought his attraction to Vi even as he lost his heart to her son, Michael. Vi is a strong, protective mother - one whose claws come out anytime her son is threatened. The chemistry between Jed & Vi is very strong & real as is the emotional turmoil that both feel as they fight their feelings - both for their own reasons. Romance + Suspense + a beautiful Child = A Must Read! I have fallen in love with this series!
Cold Pursuit by Toni Anderson is the second book in the Cold Justice series and at the moment it just seems to get more exciting with each book ( 🤞they continue) It's a fast thrilling romantic thriller with a great story line that's not that unbelievable, it has everything from government agencies, terrorist's And a HEA (which we all need once in awhile)this series so far is enjoyable to read so I definitely recommend them 📖
I really thought I was gonna enjoy this. Books with single parents that actually feature the child are my jam and Micheal was just precious.
But unfortunately, I didn't.
If this were a couple of years ago, younger Umaiya would have just shrugged it off so maybe I'm just being really sensitive about the whole thing but as a Muslim woman I'm sick of all the "arab" muslim terrorist plots. I'm sick of it only being terrorism when a "muslim" is involved. How the individual is considered disturbed and misguided instead of being branded and prosecuted as the sick monster they are only because they were born white.
Newsflash!
The colour of my skin was not my choice. My ethnicity was not my decision. My nationality was not in my control. I am merely trying to make the best of this hand that I was dealt and I am sick of being targeted for things I have no power over.
I am Muslim and proud and just plain sick of it all.
Yes. I realize I am ranting and a bit unfairly too but I can't explain that bit without major spoilers so talk to me if you've already read the book or don't care about spoiling it but yeah. . . it's frustrating. You won't believe the number of shows and books and people I have had to let go off because of this.
Anyway, in terms of romantic suspense, I found the characterisation kinda weak but with a lot of potential. Everything would progress right to the edge of brilliance and depth but fail to take the leap at the last moment. This was my first my Toni Anderson and barring the Muslim terrorist plot stream I don't see any reason not to try her other works.
“Gripping thriller from start to finish. “Fantastic Read! I am Hooked! “Reads like a blockbuster summer movie. “INCREDIBLE READ!!!!! Didn't want to put it down! “Someone Should Option the Film Rights! “Fasten your seatbelt!
Cold Pursuit (Cold Justice #2) by Toni Anderson was everything I am coming to expect from this author and more. I loved this story and characters. It has everything I want in a Romantic Suspense; action, suspense, tension and two people who deserve each other with a HEA.
The story starts with a mall attack by terrorists while single mom, Vivi Vincent and her son, Michael, are shopping and enjoying the holiday season. FBI agent, Jed Brennan is also in the mall with no weapon, while on vacation. A bomb goes off and then the shooting begins. The plot continues to escalate from there when the terrorists realize Michael was in a cabinet hiding while they were in the toy store and they don’t know what he heard or knows.
Ms. Anderson keeps you reading! The characters are all complex, even the terrorists. The author brings to light how very complex the politics are in the Middle East with a surprising twist. The romantic elements are handled very realistically. The plot and action start with a bang and keep you there on the edge of your seat. This can be read as a stand-alone, but there is a story thread throughout the series. This is a book and series to read if your love Romantic Suspense.
Now I know in the last book I told you I wasn’t a big mystery suspense fan. I am taking that statement back. I couldn’t put this book down. I loved it. Romance Suspense is quickly become a favorite of mine. Vivi Vincent literally lived through a nightmare, with her 8 yr old son who is none speaking. Not only that but she is running for her and her sons life with the help of FBI Special Agent Jed Brennan.
The sparks fly between these two from the get go. It’s plain to see they are hot for each other but circumstance, doesn’t really let romance blossom.
I found Vivi to constantly second guess herself, but what she doesn’t see and everyone else does is that she is one hell of a mother and its never going to be perfect raising kids never is. It’s all guess work really we learn as we go. Her ex really did a number on her self-confidence, it really is no wonder why she hears him in her head and does second guess herself.
I think Jed is lonely. That was my take on the guy strong loyal type. Hot too if the way Toni describes him. He can be my protector anytime! I love how he was with Michael, Vivi’s son. He doesn’t treat him like he is any different that totally rocks.
So if you like book 1 you are going to LOVE book 2 I can’t wait to get started on book 3.
Cold Pursuit is the novel that follows A Cold Dark Place, the second book in the Cold Justice series by Toni Anderson. It tells the story of single mom Veronica Vincent (Vivi) and her eight year old son Michael who get caught up in the crossfire of a terrorist attack at a shopping mall. With an eidetic memory, Michael who doesn’t speak poses a serious threat to the plans of the terrorists, whose bigger agenda supersedes that of any usual terrorist attack.
FBI Special Agent Jed Brennan who is on enforced leave finds himself a crucial part of the investigation launched to find the remaining terrorists and to prevent any further attacks. There is also the untimely attraction that flares between Vivi and himself way before the case begins, throwing the detachment that should be when it comes to her nowhere to be found. Unlocking the clues in Michael’s head is the break that practically every law enforcement agency in the country needs but with Vivi protecting her son as fiercely as any mother should makes the task doubly harder when Jed himself becomes protective of the little boy who tugs at his heartstrings.
Too many close calls finds Jed, Vivi and Michael going into hiding, to give the agencies the time to do what they do best and to give Michael the time to recuperate so that he might give into the need to put pen to paper and give a face to the people that were being hunted relentlessly. Add to the mix the volatile sexual attraction between Vivi and Jed together with the baggage Vivi mostly brings to the equation, Cold Pursuit definitely has the elements of a high roller coaster ride.
Reading terrorism themed books and watching related TV shows is a bit of a touchy issue with me, considering the fact that I am a Muslim myself. Not that I would ever believe that our religion calls for the slaughter of millions of innocents in the name of a religion that propagates peace above everything else. But the fact that Muslims at large are portrayed as terrorists by the fact their name ends or begins with Muhammad is a cause of concern for me, stereotyping that actually adds to the problem in my opinion. In my eyes, violence is wrong whether its state sanctioned or endorsed by a terrorist organization looking to make the headlines. But I guess it is rather easy to make that call while you are sitting in the comfort of your own home, reading on your iPad or watching what goes over in Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan for that matter on TV with a detached air about you because those things have become practically the realities of everyday existence.
I’d say Toni handled the terrorism aspect of the story really well, giving voice to the villains as well as the heroes in the story. The villains aren’t as clear cut as some people might like them to be and I understood where they were coming from survival being the reason behind the consequential actions. However that doesn’t mean I agree with the killing and senseless mayhem that went down, but becoming pawns in a mindless game planned and executed as a nefarious means to an end by the power hungry is something that happens across the globe every single day. Kudos to Toni for giving a voice to the killers and the victims; it is not easy to make a reader empathize with a villain on a level such as this and she has achieved it remarkably well in my opinion.
The sexual tension in the book kept the sizzle factor always at the forefront, no mean feat when there’s killing and mayhem surrounding you at every turn. Jed was such a dreamy hero, sexy enough to melt your panties, charming enough to knock your socks off and with the kind of gentle soul that you don’t come across every day. Toni creates splendid alpha heroes that are sweet on the inside and yet manages to give just enough angst to keep things real between the hero and heroine. That is what I call good writing, the kind that keeps you coming back for more.
Vivi and Michael each have earned a place in my heart; Vivi for her sheer bravery and the protectiveness that she displays towards her son. It is not easy to move past the scars left behind by an emotionally abusive spouse and Vivi earned my wholehearted approval by being brave enough to seduce Jed out of his goody two shoes belief that he is no good for the long run where relationships are concerned. Michael on the other hand tugged at my heartstrings; his uniqueness something Toni created beautifully well. The struggles that Vivi undergoes added to the burden of being the sole caregiver of Michael increased the respect I had for Vivi as the heroine.
The ending definitely gave the surprise effect Toni was aiming for. And that you’d have to read to find out because in my eyes, the scenario that played out is entirely a plausible one when one considers the factors in play. The only thing I could have wished for was an epilogue. Sorely missed one in the first book and this one as well.
Most obviously I am looking forward to Killion’s story. Now if that ain’t a hint to Toni to write the story ASAP, I don’t know what would be. Definitely recommended for those who love a great romantic suspense!
The second book in the Cold Justice series by Toni Anderson. Vivi Vincent is at the mall with her son, Michael, when a group of terrorists attack. She manages to hide her son while she seeks a way out. Jed Brennan is a FBI agent on forced leave and happens to be in the mall at the time of the attack. He manages to get several people out and then goes in after Michael. In the aftermath, it is learned that Michael may have seen and heard the terrorists and his life is in danger. Jed Brennan takes over the protection duty.
Wow! Fast paced and very intense. Toni Anderson is quickly going to the top of my favorite RS authors list. A lot of time was spent on the suspense and action but the romance didn't suffer at all in my opinion. Highly recommended!
A little fast on the romance side of things, a little frustrating on the push and pull side of things, but the action was 5 stars, mainly in terrorism form. I LOVED Killian, a new character and will be looking forward to his book! But for now, I'm skipping straight to book 4, Frazer's story.
I'm really loving the plots the author has created for this series. Seriously loving them. However... for some reason, I found this one to be lacking on certain details.
I got so much information about the terrorists, which was helped along by getting their perspectives. I even got more than I wanted about Vivi and her ex. I got virtually nothing about Jed, which was ridiculous because he featured in such a huge part of this story. He mentioned a woman named Mia, who was murdered, but I know nothing about how they met, how she was killed, nada. So much was dumped on me about Vivi's ex and I really couldn't care less, but what I really wanted was missing. More of Jed's background please.
Once again, the author's writing made it so easy to picture it all, from the dangerous situations to the investigations to everything in between. I'm excited to keep reading this series and if you enjoy thrillers with some romance thrown in, you should dive in too!
Trapped in a mall during a terror attack, Vivi Vincent and her young son, Michael, soon find themselves targets when it becomes clear that Michael may have witnessed details about the terrorists' future plans. Placed in protective custody with FBI agent Jed Brennan, Vivi must face the threats not only to her life but to her heart as well.
Enjoyable overall, but there are several troubling elements that undermine both the story and the characters.
Vivi is supposed to be a strong and independent single mother struggling to cope with her traumatized son's psychological problems. Sounds like the perfect heroine, right? Unfortunately, Vivi's excessive and repetitive musings on her past relationship with her jerk of an ex-husband and her overprotective mothering undermine her character.
Jed isn't much better. His constant self-recrimination and reluctance to give into his attraction to Vivi are irritating, and result in a complete lack of romance and chemistry between the leads. Thus, the eventual "I love yous" have no basis in emotion and feel forced rather than natural.
There are also plot and character inconsistencies that undercut the apparent anti-terror message of the story. To begin with the author seems to have trouble reconciling the terrorist theme with her political correctness. The apologetic tone presented via one of the villains appears to imply that terrorist acts could be justified under certain circumstances - an idea that is simply abhorrent. Nothing justifies terrorism.
The revelations at the end of the story, i.e., , are unrealistic and lacking in logic. While
In terms of the character inconsistencies, Viv's ex goes from a complete and utter jerk who would threaten to commit his son to a mental institution and physically abuse his wife to a suddenly caring father and guilt ridden ex-husband. Really?
Moreover, the sudden inclusion of details without foundation and the lack of closure with regard to some plot points are also problematic.
In sum, not as good as the first book, but the hints at stories to come are compelling enough to continue with the series.
Talk about a plot that is ripped from the headlines, this one is America's worst nightmare. This book grabs you from the first page and takes you on a waterslide of twists and turns and will make you lose sleep, even after you finish it. The "this could happen at any time" feeling will stay with you long after you finish this book. While mired in some angst and small amounts of the martyr syndrome, this is still one fantastic read.
Vivi and her son, Michael are spending an afternoon at a large mall in Minneapolis, MN. Their time there is shattered by a terrorist attack and Vivi is forced to leave Michael hiding while she looks for a way out of this nightmare. Jeb is on vacation from his stressful job as an FBI agent assigned to the BAU section. Their paths cross innocently before all hell breaks loose. Jeb ends up saving then both, but not before Michael is witness, up close and personal to the terrorists and may have overheard their plans and also be able to ID them. Problem is: Michael doesn't speak. He has an eidetic memory and can draw anything, but he doesn't speak and they need the information locked in his brain in order to catch the terrorists before they can strike again.
When the whole range of alphabet lineup on government agencies converge on Michael, Vivi turns mama bear and sends them all packing, only allowing Jeb contact. Then the safe house is attacked and Jeb and Vivi realize they are not going to be safe under government protection. Jeb takes then to the Minnesota north woods, his home, and they go to ground with Jeb's family as protection.
The romance between Jeb and Vivi is slow to ignite. He doesn't do relationships, she has major trust issues courtesy of her ex and the stress of the situation is killer, none of which can stand in the face of such a palpable sexual attraction.
Cold Pursuit was a suspenseful read featuring an excellent romance between a woman whose young son overhears key information to a terrorist plot and the FBI agent protecting them.
Vivi Vincent's worst nightmare comes true when she and her eight-year-old son Michael are trapped in a mall during a terror attack. Jed Brennan, an FBI agent on leave, helps them survive the assault after saving Michael from the very store the terrorists have gathered in. After word gets out that Vivi's son may have overheard key details of the terrorists' future plans, mother and son are forced into protective custody. But Michael is mute and the trauma of the attack is preventing him from communicating in his normal way through drawing. After the safe house is attacked and Jed doesn't know who he can trust, he makes the decision to hide Vivi and Michael on his own. With danger trailing them at every turn, Vivi and Jed will have to work together if they hope to survive long enough to unlock the information in her son's head.
Vivi has raised her son alone for the last four years after her ex-husband couldn't handle the fact their son was different. She's incredibly protective of Michael due to her ex's treatment of him and doesn't trust anyone else with him. She also has a hard time trusting men in general due to her ex's habit of lying to her. Vivi's hesitation to trust anyone made sense given her past experiences even if it felt at times she was just being obstinate. Jed gets overly involved in his work and in the past has crossed the line to catch a killer. Just prior to the start of Cold Pursuit, Jed is put on mandatory leave due to his actions in a recent case which is how he ended up being at the mall when the attack starts.
Vivi and Jed's relationship starts off as an instant attraction in a high stress situation. But then Jed has to make choices that ultimately cause things to sour a bit between them before he's able to make it up to Vivi later. Both Vivi and Jed are hesitant to start any kind of relationship despite the obvious attraction they share. Vivi has been hurt in the past and Jed doesn't want to take advantage of the situation. This means their romance is a little slower to really get going but I enjoyed the build up between them. When their romance does progress, there are a number of steamy scenes that are very well done. Towards the end of the book they develop some issues due to what's going on, but I was ultimately happy with the way they were able to work everything out.
The search for the group behind the terrorist attack made for an interesting plot. We get scenes from the points of view of several people involved with the attack throughout the book. Each of those involved had different motives for being there which I found interesting as I was expecting it to be a singular cause as the reason for the attack. With Michael's life being in danger, the author kept things suspenseful by having several attacks on his life forcing the group to move around. By the end, things took a turn I wasn't expecting and I found the ending to be suspenseful with just the right amount of action.
Overall Cold Pursuit was a fantastic read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Cold Light of Day, soon.
Tense thriller about an act of terrorism in a popular shopping mall written in such vivid detail as the reader you felt like you were living the nightmare right along with the characters.
Sometimes it hard to envision scenes in a book but when it’s written in or about a location you’ve been to before it makes it all so real in your mind and very scary. Even though the name is changed a bit it takes place in the Mall of America in Minnesota. Could you imagine multiple gunmen opening fire right there in the middle of Nickelodeon Universe? All the families and small children? Well that’s the opening scene in this book and it was downright scary.
Vivi Vincent is there with her 8 year old son when the shooting starts which thrust them both into a nightmare that doesn’t end when the shooting stops as her son who is mute and traumatized might have seen and heard the terrorist plot which might have more of an endgame than just the mall shooting.
Jed Brennan is a FBI agent that was forced to take a vacation after his last job a tracking down a serial killer. He happens to be at the mall that day shopping when the shooting starts and is not only instrumental in getting both Vivi and her son out but also realizing that they are still in danger and takes them into protective custody. Both characters have had some bad experiences in the past in relationships so when they find that there is a spark between them even with all the danger surrounding them they fight it as long as they can. Jed was a great hero who not only fought to protect them but also was great with the son and his “issues.
The author keeps your attention throughout the book not only with the danger to Vivi and her son but also having us as the readers be fully aware of the who and why of the terrorist. As an American I’ve never understood cultures that thrive off the killing of innocents for some cause and have little sympathy for those that carry out the killing of children.
As with the first book in this series this one was intense from beginning to end and justice served to those that deserved it. Looking forward to seeing who’s next in the series as we were introduced to some characters that I think would for interesting hero’s in future books.
UPDATE: I am changing my rating from a 4 to a 5. My initial rating was of a ARC of the book and there were somethings with the last couple of chapters that I felt were not explained properly. In the final released version she made changes to those chapters and added a epilogue which I have now read and it makes a huge difference.
The opening sequence in this book is one of the most chilling openings I've read in a long time. It involved a terrorist attack at a mall with a large body count. The account was riveting. When the action moved from the mall, with an 8 year old witness, Michael, and his mother being whisked away into protective custody, I thought the book slowed down and I wasn't as into it. I would have liked the entire book to take place in the mall. The romance between the FBI agent and the mom felt forced. More interesting to me was the relationship between the FBI agent and Michael. I also did not like the POV of the terrorists, as I did not care what her reasons were for participating. She got no sympathy from me. 3 1/2 stars.
Good Story, Great Narration (Audible Review) This was a good story. I did like the first story better. I felt like the romance in this story was more prevalent, but seemed more forced than than in the previous story. Sometimes the romance part of the story was repetitive. There is a sex scene, nicely written, not erotica.
I liked the hero, Jed (the name, not so much) he was handsome, smart and strong. I thought the heroine Vivi was okay too but she was kind of annoying sometimes. Vivi's son, Michael's father was a total douche bag. I would have liked something to knock him down a peg or two.
The story line and plot were good. The beginning of the story did grab you right away with the terrorist mall shooting.
There is lots of dialogue throughout the book and the story did flow nicely and it was easy to follow along.
The plot is worth 4 stars but the romance part is only worth 2 stars. So the book gets 3 stars.
As for the narration, it was great! Eric Dove did a great job, I really like listening to him. He does a very good job giving everyone their own distinct voice and the women sound like women, He has a very nice reading voice too.
I found the suspense/action part drawn out and boring, the story veered into stereotypes about "Muslim terrorists", and the "romance" was lackluster. People are trying to kill Vivi's son but it definitely makes sense that she's so hot and bothered for the FBI agent that they can't think straight. It didn't make sense that the kid could have possibly seen/heard something if he was shoved into a cabinet with the door slightly cracked, but whatever. Jed's caught up on his lost love, Mia, which was mentioned a lot on a surface level, so the reader doesn't really care. Overall, this took me days to read and I had to push to finish it.
