Storm Front was first published April 1st, 2000, which makes this year The Dresden Files 20th anniversary! To honor that milestone and to thank the phenomenal fans who got us there, we will be posting “Dresden Drops on jim-butcher. com every Tuesday this year. Dresden Drops will feature never-before-seen artwork, microfiction, interviews, sample chapters for Peace Talks, contests, and other tasty tidbits throughout 2020.
The first piece of microfiction, “Mike, is set between White Night and Small Favor–shortly after the graphic novel Wild Card. A visit to the mechanic. Spoiler Level: LOW.
Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in his home town of Independence, Missouri.
Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990′s when he decided he would become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.
Mike: “My God, he said, eyeing the Beetle’s corpse. “What happened this time? Harry Dresden: “Would you believe me if I said I was attacked by a giant owl? I asked.
This Dresden Files 20th Anniversary promotional micro-fiction set between the events of and –shortly after the graphic novel , is available free on . Harry goes to his mechanic to get his poor Beetle repaired, again. It's short but yet manages to give us the essence of both Harry and Mike the Mechanic. Personally I've often wondered if Mike the Mechanic was named after the , or not, as Jim Butcher's writing frequently gives nods to Popular Culture.
The only reason I gave this 3 stars is the logic problem ... I swear I thought they were driving Thomas' souped up Jaguar in Wild Card when the Owl attacked, so the Beetle wouldn't have been damaged!!
This Dresden Files 20th Anniversary promotional micro-fiction is available free on Jim Butcher's website. This slightly amusing story is only 0ne page long and only worth pursuing if you are a completionist like me who wants to read everything available by a beloved author. The story takes place after the graphic novel . Harry brings in his beloved VW to his repairman for some bodywork. But there is a discrepancy here, because in the previous story Harry was actually in Thomas’s car.
Basic Plot: Mike, Harry's mechanic, gets ready to fix the Blue Beetle again.
This was a tiny blurb of fiction posted to Jim Butcher's website in honor of Storm Front's 20th anniversary. It was smile-worthy, but not much happened in the few minutes it took to read. Worth it for Dresden File completionists/fans, but not necessary to understanding the whole series.
Ah, they actually have a name. "Microfiction." And apparently our good man Mr. Butcher has been putting them online since April 2020. I wonder what was happening then that made him decide to do that. 🤔🤣
Edited: Nope, I'm wrong. They are actually to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Storm Front. And they started in January, so not sure where I got April.
Hmm. A “micro fiction hosted on Jim’s website, Mike is about 6 good paragraphs. It took me longer to find it via Google after seeing it listed here on GoodReads than it did to read the thing. Twice.
Unless you’re being completionist, you can skip this and miss NOTHING about the Dresden Files universe.
This is a really good but also very short story in which Harry has to take his Beatle into his mechanic for repairs and he has a humorous time (for us the readers) explaining the damage. :)
It’s less than a page so I shouldn’t list it in my 2020 challenge. But I’m also a completionist and need my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Dresden page to only show “Read.â€ And this one is worth the read for that mindset
I’ll figure out a compromise with my reading challenge.
This is like a paragraph conversation of banter when Harry drop this Beetle off for repairs. No idea how this warrants as an actual short story and not just a deleted scene, but there you go. And is Harry capable of baking cookies?
I rate short stories higher. Oh, and I feel horrible for not remembering Mike Atagi at all, when he apparently had multiple appearances throughout the series lmao. So great way to remind me lol.
