Rate this book
There are many ways to die at the Circus of the Dead.

You’re invited to witness them all.

Mom sent me all the way across the country to the Louisiana bayou to join the circus and help my uncle for the summer.

Except there is something not quite right on this swampy cursed island, and after having my fortune told, I can’t leave.

I try to escape, but Benny, an all too charming ghost gangster tries to kill me by feeding me to a tiger.

Thankfully I’m rescued by Samuel, the incredibly hot ringmaster who can’t be a day over twenty. Can he?

In addition to avoiding the human scorpion, staying away from the big cats, and having trouble figuring out who’s dead and who’s alive, I have to find a way to escape this horror show. Will I get out of the circus alive or will I join their army of ghosts and become a murderer myself?

Welcome to the Circus of the Dead.

DNF @60% but then I got curious and skimmed the rest

This was so comically bad I could not look away from the car crash like effect it had. I'm genuinely wracking my brain rn if I've ever read a protagonist so stupid with her priorities so ridiculously out of order. I totally get a persons prerogative to deny the supernatural, thinking that believing in it would make them dumb or crazy or whatever, but there comes a point where denying what's right in front of you makes you the dumb one and this girl passed that point 10 chapters ago. I just couldn't w her anymore 🤦🏽‍♀ If I got started on all the other aspects of her personality I would never shut up so I'll just leave it at that

As for the love interest (villain?) Samuel

"I wanted you dead before I knew you. Now, I don't want you dead, but only if you agree to be mine."

The guys a real prince 🥴 Usually I like villains but this one wasn't hot... he was smarmy and I didn't get why this heroine was trapped on his creepy island but was obsessed w kissing the weirdo keeping her there, or why she kept believing a word out of his mouth. I might actually pick up the next book bc I read in reviews theres dubcon, and in the framework of this trainwreck of a story...... I am so curious. Sue me 🤷🏽‍♀

My Review
This one was ever so intriguing and unusual and definitely captured my imagination.
16-year old Callie Spruce is shipped off to the middle of a Louisiana swamp island by her parents to spend the summer working with her uncle.
It’s the last place she wants to be and her uncle also seems oblivious to her arrival and is acting like a crazy person at her unexpected appearance.
It’s also apparent that things here are definitely not as they seem on the surface and this strange new reality is as scary as it’s surreal.
When the sun goes down twice a month the circus with all its bright lights takes centre stage.
But this is no ordinary circus its a circus of the dead where death blood and depraved acts are the normality and it’s all controlled by the mysterious and handsome ringmaster Samuel.
Samuel with the hidden agenda who’s also the one in control as the islands Obeah man.
Then there Benny a ghost who seems to be fixated on killing Callie but at the same time also wants to befriend her.
This one is young-adult but with some dark themes and there’s a definite love triangle developing here between Callie Benny and Samuel I’d say Samuel has the edge for the moment with Callie but it’s early days so who knows where that one's going.
Usually, I abhor love triangles but this didn’t actually bother me that much here.
Maybe because this is told from Callie’s POV I don’t know really.
There’s definitely a hidden agenda though one just waiting to be revealed and the most important question being the why of Callie’s arrival.
Just who summoned her and why does someone want her dead.
Also, just who are her enemies and whose actually on her side it’s hard to tell so many secrets.
I did love where this went and also how it finished.
This stands out with its originality and I can’t wait to learn more and discover all of the islands and it’s inhabitants secrets.
I am definitely going to be reading the next book here this was fabulous.
YA can be a bit hit and miss for me thankfully this one was a score.

OMG! I loved this book. It was fun and creepy and exactly what I needed right now. This book has broken through my book slump and I will be eternally grateful. The romance had some serious chemistry although leaves you questioning everyone's character. I am super excited to read the next book in the series which I will be doing soon. And might I say that I am sooo in love with this cover. It's just absolutely pleasing to look at.

Maybe magic is real. Maybe.

This story is gothic perfection. Everything here goes "boo" in the night (metaphoricaly); ghosts, vampires, zombies, even snakes and alligators. The story was unique and there was lots of (sometimes gross) action. But, a few questions were left unanswered so I will have to read book 2. There is a lot of distrust in the story, and it's really hard to figure out who the bad guy is. I wish the MC was a little more relatable and down to earth. She was ditzy, silly, stupid, whiney, and well... a teenager. Overall, a well deserved 4 stars!

Note: I received a free soft copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Circus of The Dead presented a unique take on magical circuses, and it also presented a Gothic and mystery shrouded book that would have readers curious, amazed, and entangled at the world and characters inside. The Circus aspect of the book was wonderfully written, that while it creeps me out and I wouldn't probably survive a day there, I was enthralled reading about it and imagining how magical and sinister it looks like. Not to mention how everyone inside the circus are equally mysterious and are somewhat supernatural. Honestly, this book is the kind of thrilling story that would make you want to know more even if you're somewhat scared for the main character.

Speaking of the main character, I also enjoyed reading through Callie's perspective, even though some of her actions and thoughts are questionable and mind boggling, I understand her young minds reasoning; as she's only sixteen. Not to mention, how hard it is to form a sound decision when there are two hot and dangerous men vying for her affection; sadly, one tasked to kill her, and one insistent on trapping her to the island. What's interesting is that these men are both powerful in the island/circus, and they still are left with mysterious backgrounds. Which leaves the question as to what role are they going to play in Callie's life?

Some of the aspects that seems to be the downside of the book in my opinion are, Callie's refusal to believe in the magic of the island and circus; which literally took more than half of the book to take place. And the presence of her maternal uncle in the story, he wasn't there for her at all, not only did he fail to orient Callie about the circus, he didn't also do anything to keep her safe. I don't know if her uncle was under a magical influence of not, but it just seems like aside from being written to be the reason of Callie going to the circus, he didn't serve any purpose anymore.

Overall, while there are some downsides, this book was truly amazing and I look forward to reading the next book to come; as there's still so much unanswered questions, and I would love to learn more about the mystery of the circus and its inhabitants.

CIRCUS OF THE DEAD (Book One) is the first I have read from author Kimberly Loth. The imagery and scope of this novel--the first in a series of four--far exceeded my expectations.

"There are many ways to die at the Circus of the Dead."

Callie is sent to help her Uncle for the summer at a carnival in the Louisiana bayou. Reluctant to go from the start, when she arrives--to her Uncle's obvious shock--she wants nothing more than to leave immediately.

Unfortunately for her, this Circus is anything but ordinary, and escape not even a possibility. After only a short amount of time, some things begin to impress themselves upon her, regardless of her disbelief.

". . . It's a circus of horror . . . "

The characters all captivated me with their individual personalities, roles, and reasons for being there. Callie's strong approach--refusing to quietly submit to anything--was a welcome change. She was no mere "damsel in distress" despite her predicament.

". . . even when you think others can help you, they'll still let you down . . ."

Another aspect of this writing style that I loved was the dark comedy infused in it, and the sarcastic banter. Anytime you add dark humor to a horror story, it's usually an instant attraction for me. The pacing never felt like it was lagging, and the action continued to lead to even more unsettling revelations. The idea of this location was "hinted at" enough to give us an unsettling feeling, but not so much as to give every secret away at once.

"This is a cursed place . . ."

Overall, I really enjoyed the first novel in this series, and am already looking forward to reading the rest. The blend of interesting characters, horror, mystery, and the knowledge of a major revelation yet to be uncovered, made this one a memorable and enjoyable rad.

Recommended.

ENGLISH:

Thank you so much to the author for the book!
I received this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Callie's plans for summer are ruined when her parents send her to Louisiana to help her uncle in a mysterious circus, in a dark island that hides hundreds of secrets. Each show ends with death, but she can no longer distinguish what’s real and what’s part of the show. Supernatural things start to happen, things that have no logical explanation. Callie's life is in constant danger and when she finds herself trapped on the island after a really bad tarot card reading, she needs to discover the truth... and find a way to escape from the Circus of the Dead before it's too late.

I loved the characters in this book. Callie is a strong and determined protagonist, really brave to face so many threats. She didn't know who she could trust and that created an absolutely captivating game of loyalties, making that every clue and every new event in the story, could change everything. Especially when it comes to Callie's love interests.

Benny is so adorable and charming, everyone says he’s a good boy and yet he tried to kill Callie. Or maybe not? Of course, his intentions seem to be much more complicated than that, which is why I loved Benny, maybe because he’s one of the most mysterious characters in the story. It caught my attention since the first time he showed up surrounded by black birds.

On the other hand, Samuel keeps even more secrets. He's the one in charge of the circus, among other things, and everyone says he's a bad boy, but Callie can't see that, especially when he saves her life. I loved Samuel. A lot. He’s so intense and I feel that he has a great secret waiting to be discovered. I need to know more about him. Like much more. Actually, they both have that antihero side that fascinates me.

There are also a few interesting secondary characters in this book. I really want to continue this series to get to know each one of them and discover their true intentions. Nobody and nothing is what it seems in this story and that was great. There are some amazing twists in this book, revelations and secrets that came to light and left me completely surprised.

But what I liked the most about this story was the creativity when it comes to the circus shows and their members. And also that supernatural touch that gave me goosebumps and at the same time left me so hooked that I couldn’t stop reading. The author did a great job creating the setting and all the elements related to voodoo and tarot. Actually, the subject of this book was so fascinating and caught me in a really addictive reading. I loved all the mystery and suspense that was created, showing up new clues and revelations all the time.

Also, the story is full of adventures and adrenaline, a lot of action and tension, as well as drama and a very intense and uncontrollable romance. The plot is really interesting and entertaining, it captures the reader's attention and make it impossible to stop reading. I really enjoyed this book, it hooked me from the beginning to the end. It’s a light and dark reading at the same time, a captivating supernatural thriller that I liked a lot. And the end was so shocking! Can’t wait to read the next book because I’m dying to know what’s going to happen. I was so hooked with this great story and its fascinating characters. I loved it!

¡Me encantó!

So I seem to be giving a lot of one star reviews recently.

Trust me, I'm not happy about it either.

Had great potential, but fell flat for me

So upon starting this book, I really got vibes. Of course, they're are both a mysterious circus. The setting being on a gothic and kinda creepy island reminded me of the one in . After a few chapters in though, I already sort of lost interest.

So maybe some of you may know, but I always try to finish a book, so I can give a fair review of it, and I really didn't enjoy this one.

Let's start with the main character. A lot of the book focuses on Callie's inability to realise that she is indeed trapped on the island and she can't escape, and this for me hindered a lot of the plot because of the book was her going on and on about how to escape, when it was clear to the rest of the characters AND the readers she couldn't. It got boring and repetitive after a while when the plot could have focused on much more interesting things instead.

The plot itself wasn't interesting for me. I feel like it had great potential, like figuring the mystery of the circus and the members, but the plot didn't explore enough of that and like I said, focused on mainly Callie trying to escape the circus. I thought if she accepted it and then the plot led on to trying to solve the mysteries of the circus, it would have been a lot interesting.

The romance in this book was done okay. She felt a pull towards the ringmaster, Samuel, despite everyone saying he's the reason they're trapped. She also feels something towards Benny, which I CANNOT UNDERSTAND since he tried to kill her by feeding her to a tiger (not a spoiler it was already in the description).

Was disappointed.

A good little YA book about the Circus of the Dead. There's a creepy wannabe rapey Ringmaster, some killer ghosts, and vampires... plus witches, voodoo obeah man that can get armies of ghosts totaling 117. After ghosts kill enough they can be human again

Looking forward to next

There were a couple of times I almost put this one on the shelf for later but I am glad that I went ahead and stuck it out. The book does have a very tempting dark, horror feel but for some reason I couldn't quite get into the "terror" of it until much later in the book. We have a very young heroine and it definitely shows and honestly it did put me "off" for a bit.

FMC, Callie, well... she is one of the whiners. I was trying to be understanding.. I really was, because dang, this author really threw her in there without a hi, bye, kiss my butt or anything. Honestly this girl is really getting the raw end of the deal in every way, and the reader never gets enough info for it to make sense or even make the events worth it. She is, however, quite the whiner and spends most of the book in denial as well as pulling the "why me." She does eventually pull herself together though so I have to give her some props for that.

Callie, gets sent to her uncle for the summer only to arrive at a gothic circus of the dead, where she almost immediately gets a scary never fully explained tarot reading and then proceeds to become an endangered species. It seems everyone here at this circus is out to kill her and she is trapped here like all the other circus participants and even death doesn't get you a ticket off the island. Just as Callie starts believing the unbelievable around her, and starting to trust that maybe the delicious Sam, (whom by the way everyone in the entire book warns her about) might be willing to help her... Everything gets flipped over on its side and Callie is once again fighting for her life each new moon. Because the island must have 117 people on it at all times.. dead or alive..

I'm a little sad that the book spent so much time and focus on the FMC and her denial that we really didn't get into what the heck is really going on with this circus. Not going to lie it seems like everyone knows exactly what is going on but its like pulling teeth getting some real in depth information from anyone. Its like the characters just expect the reader to know things. I still have no idea what is really behind everything. There is mention of a skull at one point but then that fades completely from all conversation. The book ends on a "pop out" scary cliffhanger which was good, don't get me wrong.. but what could possibly be in store for this poor girl in the next book. She is so completely green I just can't see her being able to get a leg up on this situation. I'm looking forward to the next one but not exactly sure my anxiety is going to go easy on me.

Oooooh this was good. I love me a creepy story set in Louisiana with a mystery to unravel, and this checked all the boxes. The Circus of the Dead is a place of nightmares. I was so stressed out each time Callie walked around the island it is housed on. Death and magic, but what is real and what is just an illusion? I was not sure who to trust, and I really did not think Callie's chances of surviving to the end of the book were good. But that ending! I absolutely can't wait to read the next book and see where the story goes from there.

This was a good book had just the right atmosphere and the plot and characters were interesting to read about. I liked the characters they were interesting especially Callie and Benny she was interesting read about willing to do whatever to escape the island I really liked her attitude as well. As for Benny he is intriguing and mysterious for the most part I really did like him even with the whole trying to kill Callie thing. I enjoyed the plot it started out with Callie being sent there to help her uncle it is obvious from the outset that she was lured there for some reason I am looking forward to finding out more when I continue the series.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to rate this 2 or 3 stars. I'm going to give the benefit of a doubt on my mental state and say 3, because it could be possible I'm just a funk that's keeping me from connecting. Anyway, on to the review.

I'll start with the things I liked. The cover, it's what intrigued me enough to see what this was about. The blurb, now I had reservations because I don't typically like YA novels anymore but that plot made me give it a shot. Uh circus of the dead? We're dealing with a creepy dark circus in the middle of the Lousiana swamps, all sorts of interesting creatures and even a couple of heart throb prospects. Sign me up. Except, you'll see later it didn't live up to that. Lastly, the writing. I admit, I don't have high expectations with Kindle Unlimited reads anymore. I noticed quickly that a lot had spelling and grammar errors. Unless the book is flooded with them I've learned to overlook it. I didn't have this issue with this book however. It wasnt the most detailed writing, but it was easy and flowed okay. Most importantly I didn't notice a single spelling error, or grammatical mistake.

Now, what I didn't like. I'm going to try and keep this neatly summarized since it seems I'm minority which is where that benefit of a doubt I mentioned at the beginning comes in.

I felt this story lacked depth. Which is huge for me. I was very aware I was reading a book. I didn't feel like I was in the story, no investment felt. The story felt shallow. The conversations all brief and hollow, which kept me wondering wtf about the love interests introduced. They hardly speak and when they do it's not about anything of substance in my opinion. They just like each other because they're pretty, I guess.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD. PROCEED WITH CAUTION IF YOU CARE ABOUT THAT SORT OF THING***

Well, the main female is 16 so you could say that makes sense HOWEVER, one love interest is far older (ya know how it goes, they look 18 but really they're probably at least 100) but supposedly hasnt felt this way in some time.. (and you chose the 16 year old girl? Mk). Same can be said about ghost boy that's actually from the 1920s. He only appears maybe 6 times through the whole boy. That's 6 nights. Brief conversations about.. nothing.. unless you count him telling her very little about his life before and ohh ya know the 3 times he tried to kill her. No big. Still a love interest. (Don't get me wrong I like the guy.) That brings me around to the trope I'm starting to hate. 100+ year old being falling for the teenage girl. If it were a 40 year old man we would be skeeved out but because hes not human and looks 18 it's okay. I would have preferred an older main for this dynamic. In fact, I'd love to see a similar story in the adult or even new adult genre with more depth. I dont even know anything about Callie (THE MAIN CHARACTER) other than she's 16, loves surfing, has never been kissed *eye roll trope*, and wants to go home. Oh and her best friend is her sister. Again I say NO DEPTH.

That being said, I am continuing on with book 2 in hopes that she is resigned she is stuck on this island and it'll give way for hopefully more dialogue and story and character growth. I'm no quitter.. unless book 2 fails me too. Then yeah, maybe.

I'd like to start this off with the positives. Firstly, I love the cover. It's absolutely gorgeous and the main reason I downloaded this book.
Secondly, the story IDEA is great.
However the execution? Not so much.

The writing is very juvenile. It reads like an angsty 14 year old wrote this on wattpad in one go with little thought to editing before making it public.

"I'll find shows with a little less burning for you to pass the time. Like the big cats. I love animals, and tigers are my favorite."

This was just one excerpt that had me cracking up. Someone else said "comically bad" and yes. Yes it is.

Further, the scenes have barely any detail, the diaolgue is stiff and bland (as you can see lmao), and there is almost microscopic amounts of "show" among the "tell". It's as if someone is talking about events they witnessed in the most vague detail possible.

I'm just shocked this was published as is. The idea had so much potential there. Bummer.

A new series from the author I really like and enjoy reading her series as she can mesmerize me with her words.
I really liked this story as it had everything that I was looking for - love, mystery, secrets and some angst. That everything combined made Callie's story really captivating!

This book is a solid 3.75, rounded up to a four.

I was generously gifted a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I am super grateful for the opportunity to read it!

The premise of this book had me hocked. Death, creepy carnivals, sexy men, and high stakes? Count me in! I was looking forward to creepy scenes laced through with sweet moments. While readers are given creepy scenes, I felt as though I was just hearing about them and not actually seeing them for myself. As a reader I felt as though Callie was guarded and wasn’t allowing us into the story. I yearned to see things through her eyes, but a lot of the times I was just told what was happening. With that being said, I did find myself cheering and hoping for Callie. There were moments the author was able to pull a gasp from me.

I also really enjoyed the world of the carnival. I loved how the author sowed together a creepy island filled with horrors we only dream of. I enjoyed the creepy undergoing of this carnival, I just wish we were given more.

With all that being said (!) I did enjoy the adventure this book took me on! I have so many questions as to what happens next to Callie that I’m positive I will keep reading the series!

My hat goes off to this author for a clever idea and a twisted ending! Thank you again for the opportunity to read it!

This book jumped right into the thick of things from the first chapter and had my head spinning along with Callie's as I worried about what she danger she would encounter next. I never knew who could be trusted, and I enjoyed the way that the story kept me guessing. It was definitely scary every time the circus started up again. And the ending was intense and had me rushing off to start the next book in the series.

Thank you author for providing me an e-book in exchange for an honest review

3.5 stars

I usually don't read circus books because they don't interest me much but this one sounded good.
And it was kinda.
Circus of the dead is about a girl Callie sent to an Island by her mother to help her Uncle with the circus. But when the circus she sees is unlike any other. It's filled with things that should not exist and people dying in the end. She also meets charming boy Benny there and a hot ringmaster Samuel. But she doesn't want to stay there and tries everything to leave the island.

I liked how the author described the circus, all the strange things happening in it and magic in it. What I didn't like was the characters. Callie was nice but sometimes too overdramatic in my opinion. But I guess that happens when you find yourself in a freaky place. Callie didn't believe in the magic of circus until very later and it kinda bugged me.

The romance was also confusing. I mean she finds Benny charming but hate him but hangs out with him every circus. And she finds Samuel irresistible and wants to kiss him but also kinda hates him when he returns the feelings and doesn't want her to go. Like girl make up your mind. So it was kinda a love triangle but kinda not. Confusing right?

And Samuel. He was charming at the first but then suddenly turned kinda crazy? Or crazy in love I guess.
There were also many things that should've been explained in this book even though its first in the series but they weren't.

So basically I loved the world building but not the characters much.

Overall the book was nice and besides it's downsides I kinda enjoyed it.

Overall rating: 4.7

The blurb truly did intrigue me and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this. A different direction for thus author, I really loved all the mystery and suspense contains around this storyline. A blend of voodoo and circus life...totally unique. Be aware, this is not suitable for readers whose mind can’t handle very graphics scenes. It’s macabre...intriguing...and will totally drop you unawares off the edge of a cliff do..be forewarned! It’s definitely got me waiting for the next book! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

Loth's writing is seamless, and easy to visualize... even with a not-so-well-thought-out story. She could ghostwrite for people who craft amazing plots and her clients would end up with some of the best books in modern times.
Well... I'm not really sure how to feel. The plot of the series is a decent idea but book one is her getting to the island and "trying" to escape while wanting to kiss two guys who tried to kill her and who she knew she couldn't trust but she kept trusting them, even to the last chapter while creepily treating a first kiss like virginity in the way that a cult might, but also in a way that feels like it's a price to barter away to some guy.
It only felt like half a book because there was not a full arc. I don't mind cliffhangers, but there needs to be something resolved. That whole thing wasn't a plot point or something to be resolved.
However, I did buy the boxset so at least I don't have to spend any more money on this. There was nothing resolved at all in this first book. Not even the most minor plot point.
I really hope Samuel doesn't become the main love interest. The whole "I'm going to force you to be with me whether you want it or not" thing just seems a bit assaulty, and I am not here for it.
2.5 stars for great writing, and -2.5 stars for being plotless.
The narrator was fantastic.

79%
Almost to the end of book one and nothing had really happened. She's weirdly obsessed with her first kiss for someone who claims to never be interested in boys before. Then there's the 'You tried to kill me I don't want to hang out with you. But I will because I have nothing else to do for the next seven hours." only to be shocked the guy tried to kill her again. A lot of wandering around and getting vague answers.
The number of "effing"ings that are in this book is a lot. If there were just a few, then it wouldn't bother me. At a certain point it becomes grating and a shit-or-get-off-the-pot thing. Either swear like you're alluding to or just don't. Trying to do both while doing neither is eye-roll inducing.

I was extremely excited to read this because of the beautiful cover and the interesting blurb. Given all the other 5 star reviews maybe the problem lies with my personal preferences more than the book’s faults. Maybe I can no longer enjoy reading YA that isn’t in a dark and twisty world like you would see in a Holly Black or Sarah J Maas series. I have attempted to read the first book in the Stella and Sol series from this author but it didn’t capture my attention and I never finished. This book was shared on a Facebook page for another author I follow and since it looked interesting I decided to give it a try. To the author’s credit, the books did hook me enough that I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish both. The circus of the dead is a unique premise and my reason behind giving 3 stars. The rest of it was kind of 1 star for me. Perhaps I’ve turned in to an old lady at 31 or maybe my friends and I were very mature at 16 but Callie was not a character I liked. She was, frankly, an idiot when it came to decision-making. She was only interesting to the men because of her beauty or her rash actions that stemmed from a fit of anger. There wasn’t much about her that made me want to cheer her on. I also didn’t find Samuel that captivating either. Benny was definitely more interesting but overall I felt Callie’s interactions with both men to be shallow. There was no epic love feeling going on as foreshadowed by the lovers card that was pulled during the tarot card reading. Perhaps that will come in the last two books. The one character I really enjoyed was Juliette. Her scenes were always fun. The writing was ok. It was great when it came to describing the setting but when it came to Callie’s inner monologue it felt immature. I felt like I was reading the thoughts of a 13 year old rather than a 16 year old. Overall, the book left me feeling disappointed. I wanted to love it but didn’t. I don’t feel like I wasted time reading it but it just didn’t meet my expectations. If you have kindle unlimited I recommend giving it a read because your tastes in books may be different from mine so you could end up loving it like a lot of the other reviewers did.

I finished it but barely. In fact, I was frustrated when it ended. I kept thinking it had to get better but it just didn't. I understand a character having trouble believing in the supernatural but that was all this book was. There was absolutely no explanation as to why Callie ended up on the island or why she was there and she spent the entire book freaking out about what was around her and trusting people that everyone else repeatedly told her to stay away from. Either of the "love interests" have not a single redeeming quality and Callie is only interested in them because of their looks. This book was just incredibly shallow and lacking any character or plot development. I will not be continuing this series.

It's been a while since I last read a Kimberly Loth. I have missed her stories. They've always been so fascinating and intriguing. Waiting for the next book in the series was a pain and a form of torture. But it always ends up all worth the effort because it's always full of surprises that come from nowhere. I will always be an avid fan of her stories. And with this new book, I was reminded of how I have always enjoyed her stories. How her characters have made me hopeful and inspired in spite of all the hardships and stresses in the world.

Circus of the Dead is just what it says. A circus full of horrors. Nasty clowns whose goal is not to make someone happy but miserable. A real deadly circus where there's always someone who ends up dead. There are ghosts and vampires too. It's not a place of fun, not unless you're a masochist or a sadist or think that seeing blood is fun. It's a place for the morbid and people who have a death wish. How Callie ends up in this horrible place is unfortunate. What was supposed to be a fun summer vacation with his Uncle in New Orleans, turned out to be a living nightmare she might not get out alive.

This story reminds me of Stephen King's Bazaar of Bad Dreams. The only bright spot in the whole story is Callie who is full of spunk and will never give up. I guess, if it were someone of lesser strength and personality than she is, that person would have succumb to all the temptations already just to end everything. But not Callie. I root for her. Every attempt that she tries to get out of the island, I totally want it to succeed. Unfortunately, some greater magic is at work here that Callie has yet to understand in order to beat it and get out of the island and back to the loving arms of her family.

I think the story is a bit relevant in this current time because with the Covid-19 pandemic, we are all like Callie, trapped in an island in New Orleans and finding a way to get out back to sunny California. And like some of the visitors of the circus, sadly, some people did not know that the time they spent at the circus, whether they were there out of curiosity or due to peer pressure, is actually their last time on earth. And like Callie, we try our best to stay alive in this forsaken island while biding her time until she can think of a way to get out for good.

The Circus of the Dead, just like the current pandemic reminds us of what's important in life. Family, friends and just the basic necessities. All else are unnecessary and we can do without. We will survive if we keep our wits and take one day at a time. And just like Callie, learn about the surroundings, the people and never lose hope. For Callie, she has to stay alive to get out of the island. She can't lose sight of that goal. She has to remind herself of that every day.

I did enjoy the story even though it's a bit morbid and gruesome. But then again, every reader is forewarned. The title itself tells you that. Read at your own risk. But even so, as I have said, Callie's character is just so strong and she's a fighter. I think she was purposely lured to this place because there's something in her. I am not sure if she has a certain special ability of supernatural kind but she is special. And I would hate to say it but Samuel would rue the day he met Callie. I have faith that Callie will beat all odds and get out of the island and maybe bring back sunshine and hope to all the cursed inhabitants there also. But that's just me looking so far ahead.

I give the book 5/5 gutsy fire dancers. This book is not for the faint and chicken-hearted. If you are a fan of Stephen King, you'll definitely love this story. If you've been following Kimberly Loth as I have, this is another story to be excited for. This type of story coming from Loth does not surprise me at all. With her talent of coming up with incredible and fascinating tales of adventures, I, in a way have expected she will likely come up with this one. I am excited and psyched as to what other horrors and blocks Callie has to go through in order to finally be back to the real world and be with her family again. I am also sure that Callie, with her mindset and attitude, will never let anything defeat her. She will find a way. I know she will. I guess, the best thing about Loth's stories are her characters. They're simply not to be messed with. They would find a way to beat the enemy or find a way to go around the obstacle. And I have a feeling that Callie's the type who can think out of the box. With that kind of thinking, I know she will outsmart Samuel. I bet on it. Watch out Samuel!

He's got that look that is dangerous but devastatingly handsome. The kind of guy who is sure to treat you like crap and yet, you run back to him because his kisses curl your toes.

Not very good clowns unless their mission in life is to make everyone else as grumpy as they are.
- Kimberly Loth, Circus of the Dead #1 -

Thank you again, Kimberly Loth for the advanced review copy. I have missed you. I'm looking forward to the next books in the series.

Circus of the Dead is book one in Kimberly Loth’s new series that follows a young teen as she finds herself in a situation that could be the death of her. Her mother sends her to Louisiana to stay with her Uncle Luke for the summer. She was told that he called and needed her help, so her mother sends her. It’s nothing at all what Callie is expecting when she gets there. Her uncle is less than pleased to see her, and tries to keep her away from the circus, but her curiosity and desire to get back home go to land her in a heap of trouble that getting out of…could cause her to end up…dead.
Circus of the Dead is a truly fascinating YA paranormal novel full of mystery and drama. The author does an expert job pulling readers into the story from the very beginning. Callie was expecting to spend the summer with her younger sister and on the beaches of Cali, so you can easily imagine that her trip is the last thing she wants to do. Especially with all the various loses and problems along the way. The author doesn’t waste time ramping up the danger and suspense with this story with a nasty disaster that Callie barely manages to escape with her life.
The author does a fantastic job luring me deeper into the story with each turn of the page. While Callie is a teen and has teen temper tantrum moments I was shocked at how I was completely annoyed at those moments. Normally, I get so irritated when characters get bratty because they’re not getting answers, but it seems the author is an expert at deftly handling those situations. There honestly isn’t much that I can complain about concerning this book. Though I will warn readers of this…if you hate cliffhangers…get ready! But let’s be real…cliffhangers just make the next book more desirable.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I honestly can’t wait for the next book because I have to learn what happens next. The suspense and drama is well done and the hints of romance are just the right amount and well balanced. The author balances paranormal, mystery, and thrills to create a fascinating story that will have you page-turning to the very end. If you are a fan of this author then I highly recommend you pick this book up.

This book has such an intriguing concept and I read through it rather quickly. I’m obsessed with a good circus theme and I was drawn to the amazing cover on this one!

In this book you follow Callie, a teenager from California. Her parents randomly send her to an island to spend the summer with her uncle Luke, who needs her help. Only when she arrives, her uncle had no idea she was even coming. During her stay there, Callie discovers unique and deadly events that take place at the circus where her uncle works. Will Callie be able to figure out what’s going on, who she can trust, and find her way home?

I found the story to be unusual, creepy, and entertaining. I was genuinely invested in the outcome of the story and was rooting for Callie to find a way off the island throughout the book. However, as much as I enjoyed the story I felt that it kind of came to a standstill and went in circles for a good portion of the middle of the book. It did eventually progress and finish off in a surprising way.

Although I enjoyed Callie’s character, she was rather naive and trusted in the wrong people. This got a little annoying at times as she kept making excuses and giving second and third chances to Benny and Samuel. I think her actions were often driven by her lack of believing in the magic of the island, which went on for most of the book. I did find Benny and Samuel’s characters to be highly interesting.

I found it odd and slightly confusing when it came to how and why Callie came to be on the island in the first place. Why did her parents send her there and why would no one in her family help her get back home? Why was the uncle she was sent to stay with hardly present as Callie navigated such creepy and dangerous situations?

The ending wasn’t entirely unguessable, but it leaves you hanging in a way that makes you want to continue the series for sure. Overall, I really enjoyed this book regardless of the flaws. I can’t wait to pick up book two to see where the story goes.

This book has intrigued me for a while so I took the plunge and finished it in just over an hour and what an action-packed hour it was.

Callie (Calliope) has been shipped off from California to a Louisiana swamp to help her Uncle who insisted he needed help. Only to not have a clue about her arrival when she got there and tries to get rid of her but it's too late.

Things in the Louisiana Swamp are not as they appear to be and when the sun goes down the Circus of the Dead comes alive (you don't need to pardon the pun). Since she is stuck she goes for a wander around and meets Benny.

Benny is a cute guy who is followed around by an array of birds. If that wasn't enough of a problem, he's also a ghost who has to kill Callie.

During one of these attempts, Callie meets Samuel the Ringmaster and Obeah Man and my assumption is that its Samuel on the cover of the book behind Callie. Samuel is handsome but he has an agenda which becomes more and more apparent especially when he asks Callie to join the circus.

Once finishing this book I had many questions such as who summoned Callie to the circus? (although I do have a pretty good idea) and the author has promised answers in book two.

I for one am looking forward to it and will be downloading on Kindle Unlimited as soon as I have returned this as I'm at my borrowing limit.

Very much so teen read but thrilling non the less. Easy to follow lots of mystery and some good old action.

SPOILER FREE

Circus of the dead is exactly what the title hints at. A circus of the dead and Callie is the first living guest to come to the island to stay. She is sent by her parents to help her uncle Luke. Except Luke has no idea she was coming. Why? No one knows.

She meets Benny who seems to be a regular circus guest and introduces her to all the gorey, graphic so real looking acts of killing. Callie soon finds herself in a predicament when she is locked inside a cage with Fiona, the tiger who wants to eat her.

In to save the day comes Samuel. Scoops up Callie just at the right time. Benny is no where to be found and everyone tells Callie he would never let such a horrible thing happen to her. As the hours go by she notices more and more strange things happening. Callie wants to go home. Now and she isn't taking no for an answer.

While trying to pass the time she unknowingly decides her fate at the circus. Her "friends" try to warn her but she doesn't listen. Samuel becomes a close friend who assures her everything will be ok and soon she will be on her way home. An opportunity arises to leave the circus and Callie is o fool to take it. Except it comes comes a price. Is it a price she wants to pay?? Grab the book to find out.
